# Joy-Con 2 Mouse Mode Possibilities
Before the Switch 2 launched nearly two months ago (🫠), I had this idea to write up my ideas for the Mouse Mode on the Joy-Con 2. I was a big fan of the concept upon its [[Nintendo Switch 2 Reveal Thoughts & Impressions|official reveal]].
> "Bringing mouse-control is shockingly logical to allow for more games to come to the platform. It helps make the Switch 2 a Swiss Army knife of experiences, but the *only* Swiss Army knife with (legal) Nintendo games. I even had the thought the other day how mouse controls could open up a pathway for Wii pointer emulation. It is remarkable how natural this method sounds for the console, especially when I don't have to use WASD to move around, but can use a proper control stick on the other Joy-Con 2. Amazing. 10/10. No notes."
Nothing like a little procrastination paying off in the effort to write about something. Last night, Nintendo added *Mario Paint* to the Super NES – Nintendo Classics on NSO. This [trailer](https://youtube.com/watch?v=Ok8hd9D6ImM) is *amazing*.

Why does this pay off? Well, one of my easier ideas was adding games to Nintendo Classics with mouse support! *Mario Paint* is the obvious choice for this idea, but there [other games](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_NES_Mouse#List_of_compatible_games) on SNES and even *[one](https://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php?title=List_of_console_games_that_support_keyboard_and_mouse&mobileaction=toggle_view_desktop#Nintendo_64)* on Nintendo 64.[^1]
Branded *Classics* aren't the only option though. I mentioned before that the Mouse Mode could pave the way for an option in Wii software emulation/ports, but I totally forgot about the Nintendo DS. Mouse Mode immediately makes emulating a decent chunk of those titles feasible.
Another obvious option is more PC ports to the console. Sure, there are the first-person shooters and control schemes, but the possibilities go far beyond those.[^2] A good launch example is *Civilization VII*. I remember this excerpt from [a preview on Game Developer](https://www.gamedeveloper.com/design/design-opportunities-for-devs-from-our-time-trying-out-the-nintendo-switch-2) by Bryant Francis.
> "Second, as Shirk pointed out in our conversation, *the Switch 2 mouse has more buttons than your average PC mouse*. Shirk explained that at Firaxis and among hardcore Civilization players, it's generally understood that the the most devoted players use custom mice with mappable macro commands on the side for more efficient empire-building."
It's exciting to think about games from the PC realm making their way to console and using the advantages of controllers to enhance the experience.
I am eager to see how Nintendo incorporates Mouse Mode in their own games as well. It's super neat to see [*three* cursor support be patched into *Game Builder Garage*](https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/1l3zclz/game_builder_garage_supports_3_cursors_now/). Whatever the next iteration of *Super Mario Maker* becomes, it has to have mouse support. The next *WarioWare* will surely come up with wacky implementations. *Animal Crossing* most assuredly will use it in the home designer elements. The possibilites are exciting.
[^1]: Man, how cool would it be if Nintendo brought over 64DD titles to Nintendo Classics?
[^2]: I tried *Fortnite* with mouse controls. While I do like its execution, I can't play on Switch 2 due to the lack of 120Hz in that version of the game. I have been spoiled by my PS5.
