My hope is that by offering this transcription – however accurate it may be done by a machine learning/AI – will help you, the listener. I’d love to offer full, proper transcription some day, but that is not feasible at this time. Thank you for listening and reading. I hope you enjoy the show and that this document was helpful. Enjoy. --- I think I've heard you talking about it a bit something, but are you happy with your Steam Deck purchase? *00:00* But I reached out to you in the summer because you were rapid-fire playing through all the Resident Evil games. *00:00* I was like, yeah, I think it's I think it's time to give it a little pause. *00:00* But yeah, this game I do not think is all that good by modern standards, and it's kind of harder to go back to than I thought it would be. *00:00* I I guess specifically I I wanted to uh I wanted to hone in on the villains though, um, because I think one of this game's rough spots when it does come to the story and characters is the villains. *00:00* Like the guy in the big trench coat from the beginning that that injects you with the the parasite. *00:00* I played through it all and then earlier today I watched like one of those recap videos with all the the story and stuff and I was like man there's how did I not *00:00* And it is hammed up a bit, but I didn't think it was too over the top. *00:00* How did you guys eventually decide to play through the game? *00:00* It was like a sunk cost fallacy, like, alright, I've already poured so much money into this, I know I could sell it and get some of that money back, but I don't want to do that. *00:00* It feels like it's probably one of the more stressful fights in the game. *00:00* So I I was like, oh, the boss fight's over. *00:00* Uh God of War Ragnarok recently and that is a game I have been looking forward to for about five years eagerly and I found myself grabbing my phone during cutscenes of that game sometimes and I'm like, what am I doing? *00:00* There's a lot of variations and a lot of different factors that you are constantly juggling at any given point in these fights. *00:00* Um and it's just the song that plays on the title screen for one of those offshoot game modes and I think it's is it called Ada's Mission? *00:00* At the time we're recording this, the Callisto Protocol is about to come out. *00:00* But if you were walking the halls of uh E3 or PAX and you asked somebody randomly what the best Resident Evil game is, like b I'd say 95% of the people are going to just need your reaction to say Resident Evil 4. *00:00* And replaying this game has made me think that that's not accurate. *00:00* I think this game's legacy, as we've been talking about here, is drastically more important than any of them. *00:00* Uh I've never played Code Veronica or Zero, but I don't know. *00:00* You can follow myself on Twitter at Max Roberts143 and my writing over at maxfrequency. *00:00* It's really not that crazy. *00:00* Yeah. *00:00* It's the only way to play these old games like the proper way. *00:00* We can have some overtime later after the show. *00:00* on Metacritic making it one of the best reviewed games of all time. *00:00* Yeah, I feel like he has Salazar has the greatest presence throughout the game. *00:00* That Resident Evil has a history of adding one-off stories and DLC and stuff. *00:00* Luis's whole backstory is told in memos. *00:00* the the helicopter blows up and and Leon's like, Mike Who's Mike? *00:00* Thank you for setting me up. *00:00* And I want to give them massive props whoever they are. *00:00* You're like wondering like what is he about to do when he pulls it open? *00:00* Uh but could be wrong with time and all that stuff. *00:00* Yeah. *00:00* You gotta put the phone away for the big games. *00:00* against certain enemy types that you wanna like, oh I see a shield guy. *00:00* I think it's assignment ada rather than anyway. *00:00* Capcom spun off other ideas from Resident Evil 4, which is kind of crazy when you look back on it now. *00:00* If you think uh especially if you talk to people that are around our age, millennials, right? *00:00* They were pals. *00:00* Um like last summer. *00:00* So like we busted our Game Boys and did like a leaf green fire red battle and we'll keep playing those. *00:00* But for that one we're like we're gonna do both all sixteen badges and you gotta f fight red and it's like oh my gosh struggling with the game in general because it's the difficulty curve and the grind is *00:00* Pretty crazy. *00:00* uh use that whenever I'm in there doing certain things. *00:00* Dude, those are getting valuable. *00:00* You the closet's a little scary. *00:00* And now this TV's like $500 broken on eBay. *00:00* He's working on it. *00:00* It's not as powerful as the Mr. *00:00* The cores and stuff now on the pocket now that it's opened up to other developers and stuff, it's a Super Nintendo, it's a Genesis *00:00* I'm sure it'd be really difficult to do. *00:00* the big one. *00:00* Could be different. *00:00* So on this episode, we will have a guest joining us, uh, Dustin Furman, uh, the executive producer of Last Stand Media, is going to join us here in a moment to talk through Resident Evil 4 with us. *00:00* PS3 360, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, the VR versions on MetaQuest 2. *00:00* I don't know, that was a good start to the month, I guess, for me. *00:00* But maybe I am wrong. *00:00* like the different sections and seeing like later on there's the enemy with the spikes that come out of him and I was like, ah yeah, I know I I've seen that before and stuff like that. *00:00* I I think what's funny is, and Max, you can talk to this. *00:00* play Dark Souls with the the with the chainsaw control. *00:00* And I heard there was an island because I listened to original sound chat. *00:00* Playing through all of the games before Resident Evil 5 came out, that was kind of my introduction uh to the series. *00:00* It's not age the best though, and I think that's something we can touch on a little bit more, especially I mean we're gonna naturally talk about the remake. *00:00* Um, I think you get used to how this game operates the longer that you play it, but first couple hours there were especially a little bit rough going back to especially because there's so many modern ports of the game too. *00:00* Asking what the heck the controls were and uh how does this work? *00:00* We're we're talking about this game. *00:00* I couldn't get it to work, which usually I'm pretty good at mod stuff like that, but it it consistently didn't work. *00:00* I wish I could have played with those controls, but in a prettier way, you know? *00:00* Again, it the ports they've made of this game over the years have been fairly lazy, honestly. *00:00* But I do like this the way that this game gets off the ground, and I wish it would have leaned into that a little bit more at times. *00:00* That's kind of in the era where you have like emo as a thing and like I don't know like sad boy type characters *00:00* And Leon definitely kinda has a little bit of that that vibe. *00:00* He's got like, you know, the cool jacket, he wears the blacks, you know, outfit and stuff like that. *00:00* Yeah, and I think that adds to his coolness. *00:00* Dude, it's the roundhouse kick. *00:00* Yeah, this is when um the games primarily became an action games over um survival horror, which there's still some of that in here, but *00:00* I I think the reason why people do like this game so much is because it kind of stands on its own. *00:00* from the p previous games, but there's not much you need to really know about him. *00:00* And there's bugs now, invisible bugs. *00:00* Umbrella's not a presence much at all. *00:00* uh backstory and lore from the previous Resident Evil games and they're like, well let's start over. *00:00* Obviously they tie it all back in uh later on. *00:00* The antagonists are far weaker in this game than I feel like I remembered. *00:00* Yeah, I don't know. *00:00* That's a good question. *00:00* And they're just they yeah, they just present him as this person you're supposed to know from Leon's past and you really don't. *00:00* I don't know if there were certain things I didn't pick up and read, but the way they connected some of the stuff like, oh, Ada's working for this person, they're trying to get the virus. *00:00* Uh she well she's working for Wesker, right? *00:00* It was weird just because I felt like some of this stuff is really interesting and I wish that it was integrated into the story in a more meaningful way than reading a piece of paper. *00:00* I think it's the shorter one of the two. *00:00* And then there is Ada's mission, which I think is like her trying to escape the island island and exfiltrate. *00:00* you should be pretty familiar with it at that point. *00:00* What, like President? *00:00* when all the villagers rush you in there. *00:00* If during like a an intense combat part, and then if she gets picked up or something, you can pretty easily get her back. *00:00* And when I did, it was just stop at the bottom of these stairs while I go deal with stuff and then I'll come back and or tell you to come follow me. *00:00* Uh so I think they did a good job of having her stick to you fairly well and not be too annoying in that regard. *00:00* Tell her to hide in certain places and then call you can call her from anywhere on the given map or level or whatever where you're at, which I think is really nice, because a lot of games from that era you have to go *00:00* You're racing against the clock, but there never feels like there's any sort of stakes in that regard, and that instead you're more preoccupied with just *00:00* point to the remake and say oh what's hard in that disc game it is very hard not to. *00:00* Not maybe through gameplay. *00:00* Yeah, there there's probably some interesting gameplay things that and story things they could do in the remake with that idea. *00:00* uh to the next because if there is any one thing I do want to give this game a lot of credit for it's that its pacing is pretty *00:00* Stellar. *00:00* For me, I think that's what makes it my favorite part, is just the different environments, the the the creepy paintings. *00:00* I guess the main thing that would make this game more Resident Evil like is getting items and unlocking different areas, kind of like that *00:00* Metroidvania style aspect where you can unlock and backtrace throughout the castle. *00:00* Also, I will say I think it does a good job of mixing up the spaces that you're in within the castle. *00:00* But yeah, the castle is the area that I like the most, and conversely, the part that I dislike the most is the island. *00:00* Um and I actually like that fight, not the QTE one, but the one where he's sniping you and you have to run up the tower and stuff and then you fight him up on the deck. *00:00* You have to figure out your way through it and you need key cards. *00:00* But there's also a giant alligator fish thing. *00:00* All of those are really interesting ideas and I'm glad they're in the game. *00:00* Because you were streaming yourself playing that and you were getting your butt kicked. *00:00* Um really it really bothers me. *00:00* Yeah, I like too that he just straight up is like, yeah, I got a shooting range in this castle. *00:00* In Last of Us Part Two, when you go to one of the workbenches and all of a sudden you're assaulted by wolves. *00:00* finagle some things around real fast and all of a sudden boom I've got more room in my inventory than I expected. *00:00* It still works quite well. *00:00* weapons and how you can upgrade them. *00:00* You're never swimming in cash in this game. *00:00* But they introduce another one. *00:00* Just kept it upgraded. *00:00* Specifically on the pistol, but I did see with the shotgun in particular, like I'm pretty sure that each one of them are s *00:00* Each like there's the regular shotgun, the riot gun, and then the striker, right? *00:00* the RPG and in a couple instances you may have had it. *00:00* Oh, I shot him with the Magnum to get him to reveal his face and then I used the RPG and shot him in the face and then he died. *00:00* So then I just was like, it's time. *00:00* When I I played Resident Evil 3 earlier this year and got the platinum and stuff in it, and part of getting that platinum is playing through the game really fast and on harder difficulties, and you can buy an infinite rocket launcher, which turns it into a very video gamey game. *00:00* It's fun to use. *00:00* Anyway, splits his spine and becomes really tall. *00:00* Sitting on this RPG, may as well use it, and then boom, boss fight's done, Salazar's dead. *00:00* Uh the same reasons you kinda mentioned Dustin was I was like I don't want this to be a really anticlimactic end of the game. *00:00* Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. *00:00* That's pretty fun. *00:00* Is that he's a really dangerous enemy, but you have a bit too much space to get away with him get away from him and go *00:00* Kin just you completely skipped past him, didn't you, right, Dustin? *00:00* And then you are in a very tight space where you don't have a whole lot of time to think. *00:00* uh weapons in the entirety of Resident Evil 4 really made the boss fights that much less intense. *00:00* popping him in the head with my rifle from a corner I would go and run into. *00:00* for the most part in cutscenes for games, but every once in a while, like you'll just like, you know, take a look at your phone, see if anyone texts you or something like that. *00:00* The problem though in VR is their motion QTEs. *00:00* Nowadays, whether it be because of social media or just having phones on us all the time, that the second cutscenes do kick in, we grab our phones. *00:00* Uh I think there's a good amount of variety here and even the ones that are the same throughout the game, I think uh there's at least a sort of *00:00* One of the stressors about this game to me is that you can headshot people and then their heads pop off and you're like, yeah, they're dead. *00:00* Brace yourself, get your shotgun out, because this is gonna definitely add a foil, even if there are w especially with a bunch of other enemies. *00:00* Dang a lot of stuff. *00:00* Some get a chain ball and chain. *00:00* It is pretty limited with how it uses music, and I think that's in line with the other games in the franchise in that regard. *00:00* Uh I think Ada's mission is specifically one link that I sent to you, Max, when we were playing through this game, and I said, this song goes extremely hard. *00:00* Uh okay and the s and the like the title theme for that is fantastic. *00:00* Um, I don't know, is there anything specific that you guys recall from the soundtrack uh that you wanted to point to, or did anything in particular stand out to you? *00:00* 119, I'm sorry. *00:00* Yeah, the as far as Ada the Ada's mission song that I mentioned is is it actually called assignment ada? *00:00* drum and bass track. *00:00* Um whether it be with the inventory or the upgrade systems or even just third-person shooters in general because they were really not a dime a dozen until this game came out and became a massive success. *00:00* It just spun off and made Devil May Cry. *00:00* It's amazing how this game has been copied in a lot of ways, but never fully successfully done, ironically, by its own creator. *00:00* w were like their chainsaw man was they wanted a scary thing that you heard first before you saw it. *00:00* with Re2 and 3 remake, I think they were able to finally be like, okay, what made RE4 good and how can we take that and apply it to the traditional formula? *00:00* The RE engine is like the future of Capcom. *00:00* I'm okay with the the rose-tinted glasses take as well. *00:00* That probably helped, for sure. *00:00* With 056, Code Veronica, we've got this remake that is going to be the end cap of the season. *00:00* What sort of things do you want to see stick around that have been present here in the original game? *00:00* uh that's greatly over the top. *00:00* the the cow catching on fire and stuff like that. *00:00* 'Cause they had that and then like when he lights the the cow on fire, he's like, Oh yeah, bill me later. *00:00* When the chainsaw guy comes through and slices down the the scaffolding around and then Leon blocks the chainsaw with a knife. *00:00* Uh Sacred Symbols, they've got a bunch of stuff over there on their Patreon. *00:00* Uh sales figures, right? *00:00* We've hit a bit of a roadblock with uh Heart, Gold, and Soul Silver because we said we wanted to beat Red, which means it's like 60 to 70 hours of playtime or something like that. *00:00* I don't know why I think the cardboard alone goes for sixty dollars on that thing. *00:00* Pokemon games are crazy. *00:00* Chomps along of a season. *00:00* Oh yeah, dude. *00:00* knock this out before I have to move state lines because I went from Indy to I'm in Nashville now. *00:00* Well, I feel I was the slow one in the end that didn't was like, oh, I'm I'm behind. *00:00* a PVM. *00:00* Because I've been enjoying playing stuff on actual media now. *00:00* Which some reason was three hundred and thirty dollars. *00:00* re-release the super or the final run of the super NT. *00:00* Can it be like a Switch for retro games where you play it on the go and then dock it? *00:00* All that stuff right in the pocket and if you get the dock, you slap it in and it's the same thing. *00:00* Resident Evil 4 on it. *00:00* you can run through the battery real fast on it and stuff like that. *00:00* Old one'll drop in pride. *00:00* Which ever now that I've steamed like how soon they're gonna revise it *00:00* the the maxed out version just because I don't think it was necessary. *00:00* Purchase, you know. *00:00* upgrades they could do if they're gonna release not a full-blown Steam Deck 2, they could do something like that similar to like what Nintendo just did. *00:00* that so smart it's cool though it's fun fun to mess around with I wanna at least like feel one at some point I just haven't even seen one I think that would help me I have only seen mine I've never seen anyone out and about with one ever but *00:00* Max, how about after this podcast you take me back to your place and we have some overtime? *00:00* Exploring its evolution, design, and legacy. *00:00* As you started talking, I didn't know where you were going with that, and I was like, I thought he was gonna open up with the uh the sh the salesman. *00:00* Super spy girlfriend who's not really my girlfriend. *00:00* all those other platforms over the past over fifteen years. *00:00* And I think it's also been considered the best game in the Resident Evil series since it first released. *00:00* We're going to talk about all those things throughout this episode. *00:00* Yeah, uh to give everybody some uh background, so you are with uh Last End Media, which we mentioned up front. *00:00* Would you want to do this with us instead and not play for right now? *00:00* Yeah, so we've all played Resident Evil 4 here in, or I guess what was Halloween month. *00:00* I don't know. *00:00* beloved and so well known throughout the industry and and by fans and stuff like that is that even though I hadn't played it all the way through, I kind of knew *00:00* It was great to finally actually play through all the way. *00:00* One time a coworker when I worked at Kmart in high school, they had me over at their place. *00:00* I I could you just imagine plain smash or anything with it? *00:00* I kind of feel the same way. *00:00* And I think the first thing I text you, Logan, was, these controls suck. *00:00* tank controls just felt really bad. *00:00* We played the remake, uh the modern version of remake on PS4 and Xbox One, which does change the control scheme. *00:00* tank controls in a Resident Evil game and his first introduction to it was Resident Evil 4, which I found funny because that's the one where it's probably least apparent or at least *00:00* I don't know what is going on with the mouse keyboard controls this game. *00:00* When I started, I started with mouse and keyboard because I thought this will be the way to get the most precise aiming, uh, since I know the aiming is a little uh screwy, a little dated at this point. *00:00* I decided then, I thought maybe I'll go old school and check out the Wii version because a lot of people really like the controls on that. *00:00* And then I even went as far to plugging in my Wii U and trying it on my 4K TV, and it just it looked horrendous. *00:00* either on Steam Deck or on PC with a controller. *00:00* And yeah, the aiming the first few hours, you're like, man, what what is happening here? *00:00* And I've always thought that, um well I've not always thought I've always heard that the controls were not as good as people remember. *00:00* for sure, but I think there is some rose-tinted glasses looking back, particularly in the control department. *00:00* Uh in unless it's not the English version. *00:00* Capcom hasn't really done too much to continue cementing its legacy. *00:00* I I wonder what the process would be like to add the motion controls from the Wii version to like a Switch version, because the Switch does have those same elements in it that you could use with the Joy-Con, and I'm *00:00* Truly strange. *00:00* incredibly bad, which is funny because again now they're remaking it and so they're trying to rectify those things. *00:00* Feel like the rest I wish the rest of the game would have kept up some of the tonal elements that are seen there in the early hours because it is very eerie and it's very haunting in some ways. *00:00* I don't I was trying to figure out like what is Leon is probably of the Resident Evil games like the coolest character to me and I don't really know what it is about him that makes him so *00:00* I I just was thinking about like, okay, we have like emo Bruce Wayne now in the Batman, the kind of like this like aesthetic coming back, and like Leon totally fits that like once again and now they're like remaking it. *00:00* I am the sole operator to save the president's daughter in Spain. *00:00* And then he you know, he he rolls and leaps out of buildings and cool. *00:00* Kick and stuff. *00:00* Clearly the one that fans love the most. *00:00* Which has a lot of crazy narrative stuff going on, and then it just tables all of that until Resident Evil 5. *00:00* Use an offshoot of one of the previous games some of the narrative threads that may have been placed there and they just kind of go in a completely different direction and then *00:00* Uh but yeah, this Napoleon looking little boy is one of the big villains of the game, and he's probably the most I guess the final villain, I can't remember his name, the final boss of the game. *00:00* The tall guy. *00:00* Well he comes about so late too. *00:00* Um, you something about the villains it's weird. *00:00* Yeah, the thing about Ada too, and I think what uh was funny about this game overall is that I *00:00* Resident Evil, like thinking about uh Resident Evil Village, a lot of the lore at the end is connected through stuff that you read. *00:00* I didn't finish it, but I wonder if some of that's explored there as well. *00:00* Uh, I don't think it's mercenaries. *00:00* And there's a brief cutscene of her talking to Wesker. *00:00* while Ada's running around doing whatever Ada does. *00:00* Which I think five and six also have DLC if the boxes and stuff are anything to indicate that. *00:00* It's interest it was cool, but it wasn't compelling enough for me to keep playing it, I should I guess I should say, because I felt like I had had enough at that point. *00:00* uh the the secondary modes that were part of this game because that is something that they did in the Resident Evil 2 remake. *00:00* Uh that sort of that sort of gauntlet style mission where you're trying to get out of Raccoon City and you're killing all the zombies that are in your way. *00:00* While we're talking about characters a little bit, um I did wanna Max, I think you mentioned Luis. *00:00* uh main protagonist of the game and I guess Hunnigan too is sort of there and then she's not there and then she comes back in at the eleventh hour. *00:00* throughout this game. *00:00* Afterwards, like, oh yeah, yeah, yeah. *00:00* I expected it to be w way more annoying also, just because you he that's one of the things about this game is you hear about like oh taking care of Ashley's so annoying. *00:00* There would be the sections where you would play and she would follow you around. *00:00* than fun to have her around. *00:00* like physically approach the person that you are escorting and like do a manual prompt right when you're right next to them. *00:00* uh her and Leon and how there never feels to be any sort of stress within the story of the game. *00:00* that could make its storyline a little bit more compelling is to lean into those moments where they're where they are or show just how they are infected *00:00* It's just kind of there and they they don't ever do anything with it. *00:00* Very influential and some core Resident Evil staples. *00:00* You run through, there's the sewers with the bugs, then there's the sewers again with the second in command, and then the tower at the this castle just never stops, and there's a *00:00* They all seem to have like a similar final act problem where you're in some kind of dingy lab. *00:00* Or some kind of dingy, more industrial environment that just gets old way quicker than the other environments, like the island. *00:00* Um the and I think that again, gravitating to talking about the remake again is that I think that that's one of gonna be probably one of the ways that they can really improve on this game overall, is that this game is already set up *00:00* It's easily expand upon where you can do like a a village section that has more puzzles, more enemies, whatever. *00:00* the people in r uh I guess the hooded, robed people aren't necessarily classic Resident Evil per se, because the games up until this point had largely just been in Raccoon City, but it feels very much part of this world at the same time and it feels *00:00* Take a long time to get through Max, but I guess conversely, like I it's the part of the game I like the most. *00:00* I mean I don't think you can deny that there's at least at least a ton of variety o over that span of time. *00:00* Because it it kind of keeps you thinking about, well, I can't access this over here. *00:00* offshoot path on your own throughout the course of the game. *00:00* uh that the game isn't going to do for you as long as you play it to completion, which is again one thing that I think they could improve on in the remake. *00:00* um is one of the better boss fights in the game. *00:00* Your waist it feels like you should just walk through to the end. *00:00* It it was whatever. *00:00* I will say though, when I played that the first time in VR, I did not get the thermal scope. *00:00* So I couldn't kill regenerators, and so I was actually very scared of them each time they showed up. *00:00* At least them dabbling back with the horror after such a long action-y portion of the game. *00:00* So I like going back to horror, but it quickly goes back to the action with the the helicopter and the fights and all that stuff. *00:00* is is kind of an interesting thing that you don't do anything like that in the rest of the game. *00:00* Thing I feel like it kind of fits here with the world because he's everywhere. *00:00* making his way in um somewhere in Spain. *00:00* I do like not only his VO and those types of things, but I like what he represents in the game. *00:00* He doesn't sell ammo, despite having boxes of ammo behind him at some of his shops. *00:00* fresh in this game, I believe, even though it's almost two decades old. *00:00* building up your wealth so the next time you do see the shopkeeper um you've got some money to blow. *00:00* I feel like in connection to that, just overall the economy of the game as far as like how much *00:00* Money you're pulling in is never like it's enough that you feel like every time you see the shopkeeper, it's like, okay, I'm definitely gonna be able to at least buy a few buy a new weapon or at least upgrade something, but it's never *00:00* For me it was interesting just thinking about like there's like what four different pistols in this game. *00:00* necessarily sell what I have in order to get this gun. *00:00* I love it, it's the best. *00:00* That's a big deal and I like it. *00:00* the not only that perspective and just shooting over the shoulder and all that stuff. *00:00* If you just look at Sony, it's your God of War, The Last of Us, Ghost of Zeus. *00:00* It's a huge deal in a lot of games, maybe not as intricate and sometimes gets a little bloated in other games, but it's *00:00* upgrading a lot of guns that I had had on me for a bit and I just decided to see through those upgrades fully rather than because when you buy a new shotgun, you don't want to you *00:00* What did you guys do there? *00:00* I immediately sold the old. *00:00* It can go up to 35. *00:00* Uh I didn't care for that at all. *00:00* Um, but I'm glad okay, I'm glad to hear the Mind Launcher sucked because when I saw that I thought something about that tells me it's not gonna be quite what I'm looking for. *00:00* Talk about boss fights as well. *00:00* And then when I was playing it, he can instant kill you. *00:00* a few different times and he kept instant killing me and that's one of my biggest pet peeves in games and the fact that games still there are still games today that come out that have instant kill enemies really annoys me. *00:00* I did the same thing with um Sadler at the end, and then Ada throws you another rocket launcher during that fight, so it takes two rocket launchers to kill him. *00:00* I bought one, so I'll use on the last boss, which honestly kind of made it a little anticlimactic at the end. *00:00* overtuned. *00:00* go and freeze him multiple times. *00:00* I also really like the chief guy, which I'm seeing now as Chief uh Mendez? *00:00* And there's really about, I want to say like eight to ten major bosses in the game, depending on I guess what you consider. *00:00* Um which bosses really stood out to you guys the most and which ones did you like the most? *00:00* Uh just generally, Max, I know you can't speak to this for yourself for in every instance, and same with you, Dustin, but how do you how do you feel like they fare compared to some of the other ones that are seen in the Resident Evil series? *00:00* funky creature that is scary and the building's on fire. *00:00* No, it takes a lot of ammo to kill him, and then I think the Salazar fight might be somewhat soon after that. *00:00* post up in a corner and shoot him with your sniper rifle or shoot him with anything really, uh, for them for that matter. *00:00* barn or whatever it is that's also on fire. *00:00* You win some, you lose some there. *00:00* In cutscenes at the very least. *00:00* Successfully got away the second time, but that was funny. *00:00* And I wish I had seen that sooner, but But you can't check your phone when you're in VR. *00:00* I really like the uh the chainsaw guy, which I'm looking up and his name is everyone's listing him as Dr. *00:00* uh like long-range weapons or crossbows they can shoot you with and there's just there's a lot of things at once that you kind of have to juggle which I think is an impressive part of how these games encounters are set up. *00:00* I think it's a nice way that a lot of the enemies especially later on, you can kind of like really blast through enemies pretty fast if you have powerful weapons. *00:00* the shooting range missions that the shopkeeper gives you. *00:00* I I did it in VR, because that's that seems like the perfect type of place for a VR game. *00:00* high quality PDFs of uh old manuals. *00:00* Which has uh the main lady in a towel and then also in like a mesh armor suit. *00:00* Yeah, one of the movies. *00:00* Felt a little out of place, especially since you help a wolf early on, and then that helps you in a fight, but then wolves, other wolves, will come and try and kill you anyway. *00:00* The ogres are interesting. *00:00* I just shot him in the foot. *00:00* Like in a movie score, sometimes they don't want you to a a soundtrack if it's good, you don't necessarily notice it because it just blends in. *00:00* I guess from more from a mechanical standpoint, because it's like sometimes you can just hear it before you even see the typewriter. *00:00* And then the shop theme similar. *00:00* And you can spend all your money. *00:00* I think a deeper dive into the music of Resident Evil 4. *00:00* maybe a little bit more about our hopes and dreams for that. *00:00* Um but beyond that, I think it's important to look at this game within the greater context of Capcom and what this game did for the series, which is one thing we kind of mentioned before, which is how Resident Evil *00:00* This game went through some wonky development iterations. *00:00* There is a time where like Leon was fighting ghosts, which actually seems kind of cool. *00:00* Most of the game takes place in a castle. *00:00* Instead of you think of like either PS one or early other PS2 games where if you were in third person, like your character is in the the direct center, right? *00:00* That whole shift to that kind of like almost like side over-the-shoulder view you have to imagine that this was definitely part of that *00:00* Specifically thinking about um uh Evil Within kind of being a l along the same lines of this game, that same over-the-shoulder type perspective. *00:00* Obviously, you know, it's it's no knock against evil within, but obviously nowhere near the same type of legacy, even from the the same creator and trying to do very similar things. *00:00* This game, and I think we can all agree that even though we have our things that we don't like about it, it's obviously a very, very important game for many, many different reasons, just continues to get emulated in a lot of different ways. *00:00* Yeah, I mean uh we even I we even look now and I I would say the best contemporary of this game and it obviously released what it would have been I want to say like three or four years later would be like Dead Space I think would be the best *00:00* I always remember in the documentaries for The Last of Us, Neil talking about Neil and Bruce talking about how Resident Evil 4 was influential in The Last of Us. *00:00* and use that to remake these games. *00:00* Uh and again I I know you Max specifically you cannot speak to all of them yet, but I think it's still widely considered as just like if you asked anybody on the street, not that anybody on the street's gonna have played every Resident Evil game. *00:00* uh totally biased towards the the memories I had when I'm like, this is the best. *00:00* uh the Resident Evil fandom. *00:00* And now four and I played Village when it came out. *00:00* Again, we've been talking about the remake constantly throughout this episode because it's just you hard can't at this point. *00:00* iconic, uh spiritual elements of or maybe not spiritual, but just like certain things that had become part of this game's DNA, like *00:00* Leon flipping out a window like that is still in the remake based on what we've seen in the trailers now. *00:00* And uh four remake will probably still be the same in that regard to some degree, but they can do more with Leon's character, I think, other than just making him this passive *00:00* playing the first Silent Hill is not really as scary probably as it once was, just because things are different now. *00:00* Collecting items, backtracking, stuff like that. *00:00* parts that we didn't like as much, like the island. *00:00* And how does that seep into the castle? *00:00* And I wanna I like it when they're involved. *00:00* Mecha Gundam Salazar stomping after you across that bridge sequence when you are going to the lighthouse. *00:00* But it's also one of those things that I desperately want to remain in the game and not be touched whatsoever. *00:00* I'd be fine with that as long as it stays in the game. *00:00* Oh like just keep it in please. *00:00* Season 5 is hosted by Logan Moore and myself. *00:00* Follow the show at Chapter Select and check out previous seasons at chapterselect. *00:00* Starting in January. *00:00* longer episodes with bonus content and like supplemental material with it. *00:00* We have that going back to season three, the bonus stuff. *00:00* keep it going forward and then banking stuff now so that we can work on future seasons and keep ahead of ourselves is is the idea. *00:00* I believe it. *00:00* There was a point where I thought the Pokemon season I'd have to emulate everything, but I was able to make it work and, you know, actually have the real cart and stuff. *00:00* We've been talking about Dark Souls or not Dark Souls, like all the Souls games for a bit now. *00:00* and growing Gears of War, Silent Hill, Silent Hills semi feasible now ish. *00:00* Like was insistent, was like, I have Silent Hill, it's sitting on my shelf. *00:00* For eighty bucks seems to be going for about a hundred and forty dollars these days. *00:00* Regarding this show, first off, thanks for holding off for however many months to play this. *00:00* Uh that was it. *00:00* I yeah, I blazed through it because I was about to move and I was like, I just want to get this done because my whole life is in disarray. *00:00* right as it was starting to get popular and I called like this this like random business that did like TV installs for like um Lucky Dog. *00:00* You know my justification. *00:00* I am interested in the Mr. *00:00* And then the Mr. *00:00* But it is it at least makes streaming and capturing just bar none the easiest thing to do. *00:00* I think Yeah, I spent I spent three hundred dollars on a copy of Sweeken 2 this year, so I'm I'm that but I only did I sold I sold a copy of uh Xenoblade Chronicles 2 special edition that I had. *00:00* I'll just swap that out. *00:00* They do it. *00:00* So the Steam Deck for me is not really a necessary purchase at all since I don't leave the house very much. *00:00* I I've had the mindset that's like there will be phases where I use this thing a lot, and then there will be phases where I don't use it very much at all. *00:00* Awesome just because it just works. *00:00* Um that's that's the question is that is it now that it's been out for what a year now, is it a safe *00:00* Apparently the to upgrade the SSD is if you have some technical know-how, it's not that hard to upgrade the SSD. *00:00* I'm in like I was in a s I was in a similar boat. *00:00* Yeah, it's definitely uh massive. *00:00* Yeah, it had been a while. *00:00* typical rundown of everything related to uh Resident Evil 4 here. *00:00* basis of our discussion by any means. *00:00* Or Sinbanji, I think it is. *00:00* coming into the series fairly fresh. *00:00* Things like that. *00:00* They're all different and influential in their own ways, but Resident Evil 4 is the one that is always mentioned the most by critics and fans and everybody. *00:00* Uh I'm gonna take a break from Resident Evil. *00:00* And when I played it, I realized I definitely had not finished it or played it all the way through. *00:00* came out, uh which I I don't even know what year that would have been. *00:00* finished this game before and so going through and actually playing it what's interesting when you have a game like this that is so *00:00* Max, I guess did you did you feel a similar way in that sense? *00:00* I don't know, fifteen years or more. *00:00* And I didn't play it because I didn't own it. *00:00* You know, I remember that thing, dude. *00:00* So I played just that part, and then I knew you escorted the president's daughter around *00:00* Okay, so that makes me the most experienced person here, and honestly, uh I've played this game once prior to us recording this. *00:00* Not necessarily good because I didn't dislike all the other ones previously, but it was the one that I thought was going to amp things up. *00:00* Not the case. *00:00* Almost all of the game found out I was actually like one safe spot away from the final boss, played the whole game essentially in VR, and then started playing the regular port. *00:00* And I'm so they were way better than control wise oh yeah than the dual sense or anything like that. *00:00* I think that's one of the best parts of the game overall is just slowly entering the village and those first couple hours, even though you are trying to wrap your brain around the controls and that's kind of sticking out. *00:00* I I think the opening and just entering the village and first coming across the what is it, the Las Plagas, uh the zombies or whatever you I'll just call them zombies the rest of the time because it's easy. *00:00* Getting used to how the combat's gonna work in this game, I I think that is very much one of the stronger aspects of Resident Evil 4 as a whole. *00:00* Cool. *00:00* I've one of the things I wrote down was what makes this a Resident Evil game. *00:00* B horror, I think, to a certain degree, and the obtuse puzzles. *00:00* helps the game stand out and one thing that makes it still feel easy to go back to is that it doesn't have this lore backstory that you need to know other than just oh here's this guy Leon he's just yeah he's *00:00* Uh Ada is the big returning character in this game from the previous installments, which I don't know how much we have. *00:00* I was I was like and this came out after Metal Gear Solid 3, just saying, you know. *00:00* But I don't remember back to World. *00:00* One of the things about Sadler that kind of took me out of it was I'm pretty sure that guy is one of the main voices in Skyrim. *00:00* It's very upfront with its story. *00:00* Everything's connected to Umbrella out of you know out of nowhere. *00:00* I dabbled. *00:00* add that stuff later, she doesn't really play any different. *00:00* Um, so there is some larger storytelling threads that do come up in this game, but yeah, they're hidden away in some *00:00* thing with the Ada campaigns here. *00:00* Maybe that's what the PSVR2 part of Resinule 4 is. *00:00* And Ada that Ada stuff is the VR part. *00:00* contractual issues there having that. *00:00* much of a purpose and then is unceremoniously killed kind of out of nowhere. *00:00* Elizabeth, but they wanted specifically her to not be annoying, that instead of having to protect her, she helps you out. *00:00* Ashley and Leon, I guess, is they're both infected with the Las Plagas, but it that never feels like a threat at all. *00:00* But there's this pressure of if you don't do it, you'll turn into a mind-controlled thing. *00:00* kind of removed, I think, some tension there, especially with the whole plot being we're gonna infect the daughter, ship her back to the United States, and then control the president. *00:00* She d those mechanics at least are on the appealing side instead of uh being too fetch questy. *00:00* fighting off the enemies that are directly in front of you and facing giant trolls and fish monsters and whatever the heck else you run across on this uh island, or I guess not an island, but wherever country. *00:00* Could be part of it. *00:00* about the various areas in the game and kind of how the game is s segmented. *00:00* Yes, it was I I did write that down. *00:00* Just kind of felt like we uh did the castle thing pretty good and it just didn't stop. *00:00* Bouncing around. *00:00* I don't want to say miniature open worlds, but miniature levels with each containing puzzles and separate enemies and stuff like that. *00:00* entrenched within what Resident Evil is. *00:00* castle corridors that you're running through and killing enemies mindlessly. *00:00* The game is very much bottlenecking towards the end, and so they they need to they need to condense some things down, but at the same time then they introduce Krauser, who feels totally out of place, and there's an entire boss fight there with him. *00:00* Not Resident Evil. *00:00* It has to happen. *00:00* zombies and uh mutants and monsters came from. *00:00* And at this point in Resident Evil, giant monsters really weren't a thing outside of Nemesis, right? *00:00* But I can't remember what's in Code Veronica, honestly. *00:00* uh taking on the sw you know the hordes of enemies for his you know minutes at a time. *00:00* But i I was man, I was just getting so frustrated with that part. *00:00* Throwing shooting the spear gun at the giant fish thing is awesome in VR. *00:00* I mean more so than Ashley, even, I would say, is the shopkeeper. *00:00* amount of that because it's one of those at the end of the game I wasn't like, ah man, we never found out the backstory behind the the shopkeeper. *00:00* Well then you would think that they would be able to get him back for the remake. *00:00* the inventory system from Resident Evil 4 as its own game. *00:00* unique way. *00:00* Uh do if I buy this weapon, then I won't have the room. *00:00* Below, um, they automatically flip and flop. *00:00* One thing I wanted to hone in on with this specifically was what you said, Dustin, about how uh you were trying to decide which guns to get and which ones not to get. *00:00* i in turn you're going to get rid of the one that you've been carrying with you because you don't want to carry two shotguns with you. *00:00* But one of the nice things is that it does give you the actual stats and kind of like what Max was saying, I was like, well, it's kind of stupid for me to not, now that I'm looking at the stats. *00:00* supposed to be more of a spread than a than a straight on shot. *00:00* It takes up so much space and a separate ammo entirely. *00:00* Right. *00:00* That's what I did. *00:00* Um and then I'm curious what you did with it. *00:00* kill essentially. *00:00* But it's funny and it's like the fifth time you've beaten the game and you just run around and you're shooting rockets everywhere. *00:00* But your first time through the game and it's it's like a one-hit cheat code. *00:00* Yeah, I liked him a lot. *00:00* And so that's what I did. *00:00* Hmm Well, I'm tr I'm trying to remember, let's see. *00:00* in the the basement and you're waiting, you have like a timer where you have to kinda have uh to avoid him. *00:00* I think that I went and did all of what I thought was all the freeze points and he didn't die. *00:00* A lot of fit on that fight. *00:00* How you're supposed to beat him, you just have to you have to do it very quickly or else you're going to die there. *00:00* Uh that fight itself is pretty strong in my opinion. *00:00* I really stupidly I had to do that fight twice because I beat him and there's the timer and so then it plays the cutscene and the cutscene ended and someone had texted me. *00:00* Relic of that time. *00:00* Uh there's a visual difference between them, like the villagers obviously we mentioned are there in the first half of the game and even though the Lost Plogus foes are the same once you get into the castle, now they're these hooded cult-like figures. *00:00* Um, but there's a lot of I think what this game does a very good job of and what makes all the encounters stand out is that they give you a good mix of a lot of different types of foes at different times. *00:00* Um beyond that, uh there is a good mix of just random monsters and stuff like you mentioned the one of the sewer parts too, Max, where you're all of a sudden fighting invisible creatures. *00:00* For a game where you are shooting people a lot in the head, um even even with the most basic enemy types too, like you can kill *00:00* Which is that like a fan name that they've given him or is is there any reference to this being his name? *00:00* But I yeah, I tr I tried out the shooting range, but I didn't I like did the first one and I was like I'm good. *00:00* Bum rush guys, they were great. *00:00* But the regular regular f enemies, I was bored bored with them. *00:00* So even even though like I said there's a lot of variation with them and they have different weapons the parasites can jump out of them and stuff. *00:00* the shakes after to save his daughter because this guy can't keep a reticle straight for his life. *00:00* Super prominent here. *00:00* Things about this game that I think also stands out quite a bit. *00:00* to the environment, uh, which is a good sign. *00:00* uh re4. *00:00* was blessed to get this game at first and then later was cursed and almost doomed the franchise because of this game in some ways. *00:00* came about. *00:00* Devil May Cry wouldn't exist without Resident Evil 4 being experimented on. *00:00* the the progenitor virus, which apparently is in Resident Evil Five, that started in these early versions here. *00:00* that ultimately leads Capcom down the road of five and six, which then also leads to seven and eight because the reception to those games. *00:00* Gears of War or Uncharted or something like that. *00:00* uh game to draw a comparison to between like a direct influence would be dead space and even nowadays like *00:00* a direct line back to Resident Evil 4 uh that would not exist without Capcom creating this game. *00:00* Capcom was smart enough a few years ago to be like, okay, we were doing something right with Resident Evil 4, but then we kind of screwed up and went too far, and then they rebooted the series basically with seven. *00:00* It's interesting to see how the legacy of this game affected remakes of its prior titles as well. *00:00* One broad question that I want to pitch to both of you. *00:00* Uh but just broadly speaking, we've mentioned some problems we have with the game, but do you guys think this is the best Resident Evil game? *00:00* I d for me, like I really became a Resident Evil fan at Resident Evil 7. *00:00* I it's definitely a rose tinted glasses thing. *00:00* Works really well and surprisingly so for a game that came out in 2005 and never was imagined to even be used in VR. *00:00* I love it. *00:00* Who knows when PSVR 2 will be out, but that'll be playable in VR, so there's a lot of possibility and opportunity for other games to claim the title here. *00:00* Suave, cool dude who's out here in the middle of nowhere trying to save the president's daughter. *00:00* Much more involved than just walking in and seeing a dude at a fireplace. *00:00* So seeing that expansion kind of like making it more scary by modern standards as well, just because this game now really *00:00* isn't scary at all. *00:00* the idea of taking your established sections of this game and making them more traditional Resident Evil in whether it's its puzzles or *00:00* I kind of like the two of you said, I want them to lean more into the horror bits of it. *00:00* iconic as an opening to any game. *00:00* blood and more ritualistic stuff. *00:00* They have a real opportunity to subvert expectations as well. *00:00* as if that would ever be possible. *00:00* the lava room, boss fights, where can they surprise people in a game that's been around for 17 years? *00:00* And then the story stuff tie more of that lore into the narrative or make those pickups a bit more I'm not saying make the pickups super obvious, but *00:00* Has a presence getting Wesker kind of just name-dropped later on and Ada. *00:00* Drinks on Leon. *00:00* The main thing, uh which if you got four hours every week to listen to, you th we've got you covered. *00:00* Thank you so much, Dustin, for joining us, and thank you all for listening. *00:00* Man, playing through all those Pokemon games would be tough. *00:00* So I'm feeling once it's done, every game after that is shorter, so I feel better. *00:00* 700 800 dollars. *00:00* s um you know, like all the Zelda games or something or 3D Zelda or something. *00:00* Uh my job's office is here, but more than anything, I just kind of wanted to move. *00:00* Yeah, it's been it's been nice so far. *00:00* married or in a relationship or anything, I was just meeting my dog and I was like, you know, I can just this is a good point in time to just up and do something new in my life where nothing's really holding me back. *00:00* So I'm I'm probably safe. *00:00* And Max, you uh it looks like was this y was it your office and now you've been um now it's been commandeered. *00:00* Now I have a a retro tank five X as well. *00:00* It's it's awesome, man. *00:00* The pocket. *00:00* I I told myself that this year I would get a Steam Deck and not the Pocket. *00:00* I could look at my I could look at my receipt, but yeah, I think so. *00:00* I don't like sometimes it doesn't feel like it's quite as powerful as I would want, but it's also like I don't I'm trying to be realistic about it, like the battery is already like *00:00* Leave quickly because I have like I'm about to cancel some pre-orders for some other stuff because it's just too much. *00:00* And then when I bought this, I used it for a long time. *00:00* that different. *00:00* It's massive. *00:00* The VR version, which was made by Armature. *00:00* But in Resident Evil 4 I get to the village and the the villagers just swarm you and the chainsaw man shows up. *00:00* But really I had no idea. *00:00* kind of the crustiness of the age of it a little bit. *00:00* It's it's funny hearing you talk about the getting used to it because for me, and I think I told you guys a little bit um in our Discord chat before and in the weeks leading up is that *00:00* But yeah, there's more they could have done with the various ports over the years. *00:00* And the later the later aspects of the game go towards more towards campiness at times, which I like because I feel like that's very much a core feature of the Resident Evil series as well. *00:00* Thinking about well does this game it came out in what year? *00:00* Yeah, he just has a cool edge. *00:00* Um yeah, it it was weird. *00:00* that they could have poked at here in Resident Evil 4 that they just blatantly chose not to. *00:00* come up with and obviously that leads to other things and there's new villains that show up and new viruses and stuff, but it is it is funny that they chose not to go off and *00:00* outlandish and absurd of a character, and I was greatly interested in seeing how they would go about implementing him in remake, and they kind of teased him in the most recent trailer for the game that I I think we saw about a week ago, so that was fun. *00:00* thrilling by any means. *00:00* uh positive or negative feelings about the antagonists in the game because I really felt that they were quite flat, especially compared to some of the other villains in the previous Resident Evil games, which I think is more often than not a strength of the series. *00:00* Um he sounds exactly like all the Nordic talking Skyrim. *00:00* villain with um uh the the Napoleon guy being the the villain of the castle area and then ending with Sadler and the the QTE fight that you were mentioning. *00:00* I mean, speaking more directly to the remake, it is one of those things that I wonder if Capcom's going to look to uh remake as well, like the Ada campaign and *00:00* Uh when they were making Bioshock Infinite, Ken Levine talked about Ashley being like an inspiration for um Elizabeth. *00:00* Overall, I mean yeah, she can be annoying, but for the most part, they seem to do a good job where you can like she can hide in a box. *00:00* annoying, I guess, in the scenarios where she is being kidnapped, or in she's gotta go spin the lever or lift the lever, or she's stuck down below, and you have to snipe to save her. *00:00* Th this plot thread of you will turn into one of the villagers didn't feel like it had any weight to it. *00:00* Or the castle's too long. *00:00* I don't know. *00:00* Move through the castle, then you're separated from her. *00:00* It's the thing that was is been interesting in playing through all the Resident Evil games and I've played uh Seven and I've played Village is that *00:00* hard to to navigate. *00:00* Yeah, the castle was my favorite for a lot of the same reasons you said, Dustin. *00:00* drop in the castle, but it it then becomes more cl resident evil in terms of like iconography and stuff like that with the setting that you're in and you mentioned *00:00* is scary again. *00:00* wholly unique compared to everything else. *00:00* creative things here and there that I I some like specifically thinking about either the the the battle with the the fish monster in the lake, whatever that thing is. *00:00* Well, this kind of segues well because I was going to st I wanted to start talking about the weapons and and also the inventory management system. *00:00* He is the he is the video game aspect of this video game. *00:00* But uh, you know, piecemeal as you go and then he'll sell you a more powerful gun, then you're deciding do I sell the gun I have now? *00:00* duped by so many games afterward throughout the 360 and PS3 era in particular that I'm thinking about. *00:00* I don't know if Resident Evil 4 necessarily created it. *00:00* simulator out there for moving items in a case. *00:00* RPG or something like that if you can carry it or a machine gun. *00:00* the m the initial handgun for the same reason as you Logan where I was like man I've invested so much in this that surely it'll be because of my investment it will be better *00:00* And so that robs him, I guess, some of the scare factor, but I think that concept is really cool, being trapped in a maze, having to escape a monster. *00:00* Just because I think that we're all kind of tuned now at this point and not for the better to like I don't know. *00:00* like at any point without even realizing. *00:00* uh specific part of the castle where you're in like a really large expansive room and there's a ton of people coming at you at once and there's some of them who have shields and there's some of them who are just basic types and some of them have *00:00* Hmm. *00:00* I I just wrote down it's moody and atmospheric music, so it just lends itself to the environment you're going through, and that's kind of what Dustin was saying. *00:00* So it's crazy that this one game kind of spawned the popularization of a certain style of game. *00:00* uh immediately. *00:00* I I hope we can uh I'm curious to see if that holds up by the time we've played through all of them, Max, or if you have a new favorite. *00:00* What do you what kind of changes do you guys want in the remake? *00:00* storytelling standards in video games. *00:00* I'm just saying, they could do it. *00:00* Fast and Furious. *00:00* Um but it's always hard to predict with stuff like that. *00:00* Nine eighteen or nineteen? *00:00* Nicely asked in a very firm way to to dispose of now that I have this one. *00:00* I I am my super NT. *00:00* Dang it. *00:00* least uh annoying because it's from a different perspective. *00:00* I feel like uh one of the best parts about the opening is getting intr reintroduced, I guess, to Leon. *00:00* Resident Evil? *00:00* That uh uh according to the Wikipedia page, that is the larger edition. *00:00* Jason, the son, whatever his name was. *00:00* Time. *00:00* I guess just broadly, what was your guys' favorite part of the game? *00:00* long, but I do feel like the castle feels the most traditional Resident Evil part of the game, and I think *00:00* I the labs are another thing, and another part of that island section, but it does feel intrinsically Resident Evil. *00:00* And some sort of reprieve, but not enough. *00:00* specific style of inventory management has gone on to become infamous in its own right, so much so that I know there are separate games dedicated to j like inventory management simulator. *00:00* tie into traditional Resident Evil, which is about a you know, a lot of inventory management stuff, just kind of in a new *00:00* With the inventory, you have to be very selective about which weapons you choose to to use, because you just simply cannot hold all of them at once. *00:00* It had like a it of like twenty-five points, and one point is one shot from a regular pistol. *00:00* And the Magnum that I had pretty much mostly maxed out was at like 17. *00:00* You were maxed out there with weapons. *00:00* So I like that there is a essentially a one-hit kill weapon, but it does rob a lot of tension out of boss fights and encounters. *00:00* So like I don't know. *00:00* the the GameCube manual. *00:00* the manual scanned and the box art and stuff from the GameCube version. *00:00* To be expected. *00:00* Reinventing Resident Evil for the first time. *00:00* It's it's almost hard to pin it, but you have to imagine this was like the early and I think we talked about this, but the the over-the-shoulder view, which it went well beyond just like survival horror games, but think about like *00:00* It popularized the over-the-shoulder third-person view. *00:00* best Resident Evil game nowadays? *00:00* expand certain n not even just sections, but scenarios. *00:00* to be somewhat action-y as well. *00:00* They've kept the other remakes campy and I think that they're gonna do the same with this one. *00:00* the the Las Plagas in your blood. *00:00* That's awesome, and that's a subversion that also adds to the ridiculous over-the-top action nature of it in that super fun way. *00:00* you know, maybe have Saddler have more of a tie to them in some way, or I don't know. *00:00* That's been a that's been a long one. *00:00* substantial and then I had a kid in the middle of like us trying to do this and it was like oh but I'm close to the end we have a date to record um *00:00* In June, I started playing it in VR. *00:00* And unfortunately, it just I don't know. *00:00* What's funny about Ashley is that so uh in the end there's the part I'm trying to remember, she like basically straight up hits on Leon, which she kind of does throughout the game, and I'm like, this is weird *00:00* long. *00:00* uh rail car or whatever you call it with the it's just there's a lot of parts that make up a castle and I *00:00* where you know we're talking about camp in in Resident Evil and I feel like the the shopkeeper, especially in this game, is like just the perfect *00:00* is none other than Paul Mercer, Mercier, who's also the voice of Leon *00:00* Different over here, stranger. *00:00* There may not be a save spot, but nothing will come hurt you while you're at the merchant. *00:00* Well, speaking of those mechanics, I think that's honestly the most influential aspect of this game is just the gun upgrade system and the invent maybe not as much the inventory management, because I think Resident Evil 4's *00:00* About the inventory specifically, that's one thing and another thing that I had always heard about in the Resident Evil, even though I hadn't played it. *00:00* I like picking up coins throughout the entire game too. *00:00* stronger weapons in front of me, uh which I didn't know if they would be stronger or weaker. *00:00* Speaking of boss fights, kinda in the same vein, I did want to touch quickly on enemies in the game and see what you guys thought of just the basic enemies that you come across. *00:00* Oh, that m band Mario had me listen to that I didn't like. *00:00* I love the thing. *00:00* And Dead Space is being remade right now alongside Resident Evil 4. *00:00* I can I can pass. *00:00* Is PVM, yeah. *00:00* You've used yours more with the dock than I have. *00:00* Infinitely better. *00:00* Suave kinda. *00:00* dies with a giant insect thing through his chest, so I feel like there's more potential to explore him, but he's just kind of there. *00:00* And I looked it up apparent according to the Capcom fandom, it says she's 20 years old. *00:00* But that's just gameplay scenarios, not so much the moment to moment with her following you around. *00:00* That's such a good that's such a good an idea. *00:00* For the new I guess comparing it to village, it can s be set up kind of in the same way as village, where there's the castle part, there's the dollhouse, there's the section at the end, and they're kind of all like these *00:00* different part of this game for both better and worse because this is also the section where you get trolls coming and attacking you, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but you know, sure *00:00* Okay. *00:00* It kind of made it popular. *00:00* Dying to play this game and watch these cutscenes and see these story moments for literally years and I'm sitting here texting somebody or scrubbing through Twitter or whatever and it it's very it's a problem. *00:00* and is still being made and remade and all this stuff and drawn from today. *00:00* I think the best Resident Evil is three remake, but I know that's a really hot take. *00:00* So if it's not the best, it could still be the best with the remake. *00:00* So some of it I feel like we're the things that I want we're already starting to see threads of. *00:00* Like I kind of expected my Sweek It In copies to change in value because of the remaster and I think that they've *00:00* We're not even gonna try to explain it. *00:00* Those people are just the hooded people, which are just the military people. *00:00* If armature can do it, it's built from the ground up, and RE Engine is clearly capable of it. *00:00* I do that all the time. *00:00* So what other seasons do you guys have in the works for the show? *00:00* I saw a copy a few months ago for eighty dollars. *00:00* Yeah, it will probably be twice as much as a few years. *00:00* There I'd say there's what three or four main villains. *00:00* Yeah, I'm sure people would complain about that. *00:00* Like this game keeps things going. *00:00* I will say that I do appreciate that uh speaking about the lake and some of the different bosses or I guess almost just sections is that this game does do *00:00* Subvert the expectations with the audience w in the most recent state of play direct, whatever it's called these days from Capcom. *00:00* Like that I think I got and I got Silent Hill too a few months ago from I bought it from a listener for a good price, but it was still *00:00* Um man Sweetin okay, Sweetin 2 has gone down actually by a pretty significant margin. *00:00* Back in uh 2020 when I ordered my pocket, shipping was eighteen dollars and sixty-eight cents. *00:00* Like I I don't know. *00:00* fascinating ways like it it's like they were very trying to be very intentional with making this game feel like its own thing. *00:00* S let us soak in this world and this lore. *00:00* Give us a cut. *00:00* Silent Hills are done. *00:00* Maybe we can't. *00:00* Ashley, I feel like, gets a lot of hate in this game and she is pretty darn annoying, but I didn't find her to be that bad. *00:00* If they can do it with seven and they can do it with village, let's do it with four. *00:00* They they pay they have you pay up front. *00:01* I just didn't want to be in there anymore after a while. *00:01* I would be uh remiss if we didn't also talk about the RPG and I'm curious what you guys did with *00:01* What is I don't know what it's called, but the the maze thing in the mines where you're running in those boxes above a cavern and you have to unlock things and giant creatures chasing you. *00:01* They're like, yeah, we got one. *00:01* So I don't know how how much that's going to cost though. *00:01* But to do that, uh let's bring in our guest here, Dustin Furman. *00:01* Since she I mean she's supposed to be a kid. *00:01* I'm glad it's there. *00:01* I think that's a cool concept. *00:01* Like there are ties to uh Devil May Cry with this game. *00:01* Dang, yeah. *00:01* I dude, I don't know what went through my head 'cause that would have been like what two thousand nine, ten that came out. *00:01* I probably would have bought the the big one. *00:01* Yeah, I I didn't I don't think she's I I didn't think of her as an escort mission either. *00:01* I got some rare things on sale, stranger. *00:01* Like I was genuinely shocked because I had forgotten that you can essentially one hit kill bosses as well. *00:01* I like that guy a lot. *00:01* Anyway, it's it's really good. *00:01* Is behind the Mr. *00:01* Alright, Dwell, you've I'm you've got my gears turning. *00:01* So s so before playing Resident Evil 4 on PS4, or on the PS5, I guess, whatever. *00:01* I don't know. *00:01* It's Leon. *00:01* It's interesting 'cause I I don't know, sometimes I don't tune into soundtracks at all, and this is a game that I didn't feel like I really did. *00:01* Yeah, I feel like if I just wait like another twelve months, they'll have something new coming. *00:01* Yeah. *00:01* I'm trying to think. *00:01* Like you get you get the present you get Ashley and you go you hide in the castle and then the flow was *00:01* Like it's part of a resident evil quota that Capcom puts in place or something. *00:01* And I'm really glad seeing that they're continuing that on for the remake as well. *00:01* I I'm I'm curious. *00:01* Maybe that that will be my my treat for myself, but we'll see. *00:01* I didn't know there was a castle. *00:01* And it's interesting too just comparing this to the previous Resident Evil games. *00:01* Yeah, Mendez, and then what's uh his former partner's name? *00:01* I did not. *00:01* And then it just blows up unceremoniously at the end. *00:01* The only weapon I didn't care for was the mine launcher. *00:01* Like I'd recommend that to anyone before playing the traditional one and before remake is out. *00:01* It's about, you know, predicting the top selling games on on uh the PlayStation Network. *00:01* So that's what's being published right now actually. *00:01* I think emeralds like a hundred and some to get the cards. *00:01* Natural kind of got put in my head because my j my office is out here, so now I've got an office to go to, which is nice and it's cool, and we've got like a studio space and stuff like that, so I can *00:01* I highly recommend it. *00:01* It's a very straightforward system, but I I really do feel like it's something that we hadn't seen much before until it came about. *00:01* I think it's called the Killer Seven, which is funny because that was one of the Capcom five. *00:01* You might be safe, but behind me used to be my all my retro HD consoles and my Sony 3D TV. *00:01* Yeah. *00:01* And I'm not confident about the button placement. *00:01* I mean it had been a while before since I had played this game, so when I heard that line at the end, I was like, wait a minute, please tell me that this isn't going where I think it's going, and then Leon's like, no thanks. *00:01* I don't know what that would look like. *00:01* For me, it was also Salazar. *00:01* Well, I shoot him with the SMG, I guess, in the on the PS4. *00:01* They dive into that and do, you know, critical tracks and give you the history and talk about the composer and stuff. *00:01* I mean the whole thing. *00:01* Um I mean I guess that makes sense, but it's still weird that there's just they did the subtitle work, but then they don't include it in the English release of the game. *00:01* Sixteen year old. *00:01* He reminded me of Mr. *00:01* I we haven't talked about the QTEs at all, just because this is one of those things that i is definitely kind of more of that era. *00:01* So it's just oh it's uh the soundtrack is there we can listen to Slipknot, A Perfect Circle, The Kear, Deft Tones, Rob Zombie, The Used. *00:01* But you need to kind of it's kind of like uh maybe this is giving it too much credit. *00:01* Um Leah needs to maybe cut the coffee a little bit or something. *00:01* Um that track is on like a 12-second loop though, I feel like, so there's not a lot to that song, but it's still good. *00:01* Helped probably a little bit, but I love three remake. *00:01* He's he's throughout the entire game, but I feel like Salazar has the greatest presence Sadler. *00:01* Krause was made up for this game, right? *00:01* There's like the one section where you kind of have to backtrace in order to get the different key cards and stuff, but um I've just from a visual perspective I thought that the island was the the least interesting part. *00:01* Because every there there were multiple times during my playthrough where I thought, oh shoot, I can't pick this up and I'm gonna have to put it down on the ground and then I just *00:01* I like moving and organizing things. *00:01* And when I sent Logan my I sent him in the little clip of me killing Salazar, I thought that the Magnum had contributed to his demise. *00:01* But I like that section just because it was like the right amount of of tension and he's also like a really creepy design as well. *00:01* This is all out of your realm, Max. *00:01* Spray and pray, baby. *00:01* I was I don't think three remake is bad, but it uh coming from two right off it, I was like, man, what happened? *00:01* S sacred sales or something? *00:01* So the show actually won't even stop. *00:01* I got lucky. *00:01* Or is it IBM? *00:01* Um and getting an SD card is super cheap. *00:01* What is kind of your own backstory with this game? *00:01* She's 20. *00:01* Like those are the type of little things that I think need to stay in this game. *00:01* Yeah. *00:01* I see those at shows now. *00:01* It was great just because I would could play it either in bed or downstairs wherever. *00:01* Like he just strolls and shoots things around, has cheesy, cheesy one-liners. *00:01* Leon? *00:01* I in some ways I feel like I can agree that the ca the castle at at some points I feel like does feel a little *00:01* Bring it back. *00:01* But I always had the pistol, the submachine gun, a shotgun, a rifle, a magnum, and then an RPG. *00:01* I watched the cutscene and then I picked up my phone and then like it blew up still. *00:01* All right. *00:01* Like the PS1 core couldn't run on this or the Dreamcast one that's in work right now. *00:02* I remember seeing at GameStop and being like, what is this? *00:02* I'm not gonna get a GameCube and play it that way, but I will try to do it in a more authentic way. *00:02* His inclusion is I think he arrives like near the end of the fourth. *00:02* It has cutscenes. *00:02* When you don't know how to kill the regenerators. *00:02* So I would just sell it and I realized that you got some of the money back. *00:02* Uh Maxw uh, what did you do with yours? *00:02* It takes a bit to kill him. *00:02* Yeah, I'm not a fan of them. *00:02* So I think those are what stands out here. *00:02* Per usual, we're gonna have sort of a legacy wrap-up discussion here, but then I did want to also make sure we talk a little bit more about the remake that's coming up and *00:02* I've only been here like two weeks, I think. *00:02* I see all this stuff's on the desk. *00:02* And it dude, if they release an OLED model at some point of the Steam Deck, that would be the That's probably what I I feel like that's one of the natural like 1. *00:02* Like he's not like a big tough guy like like Chris is, but he's like very capable at the same time and I I don't know. *00:02* Like that that uh he just consistently and jumping out like yeah, you mentioned the jumping out of windows. *00:02* Um and that's like one of the only boss fights that you really have a big uh QTE uh section with. *00:02* There's one that takes about, I want to say like 30 minutes to beat and run through, and it's more of like a gauntlet style mission where you've just got a bunch of foes coming at you at once and you got to get through them all. *00:02* And I revealed it and I used the RPG and and took him out instantly. *00:02* So um here's to hoping, I guess. *00:02* And I I was trying to figure that out because I was like, I remember this game being scary, but I was also a lot younger at the time. *00:02* It's been a long one. *00:02* Um and then over to my r my right was wherever the CRT is, which is also in that closet. *00:02* But Yeah. *00:02* This hidden part of Spain. *00:02* I think that's gonna bother me a lot when I play that game because whoever did the original VO for the shopkeeper in this game did an immaculate job. *00:02* Did you bought the new. *00:02* It's enjoyable. *00:02* And then I would assume the remake has no QTEs *00:02* I like the fight with the two ogres and you can time it and try and get one or both of them in the lava in the middle there. *00:02* Hmm. *00:02* We have so many ideas. *00:02* That might have been junior high. *00:02* He's he works for the president somehow. *00:02* I've I've been meaning to, but I just have not had time. *00:02* Well how he's in there like figuring out I wish that was explored a bit more. *00:02* Oh, but that's the best part of the game, I think. *00:02* I mean, this is a cult that has taken over a village. *00:02* But I have invested so much in physical stuff that I feel it would it would complicate my mind in a way. *00:02* Uh it originally released on the GameCube, later came to the PS2. *00:02* I always knew Resident Evil 4 was the the peak, or at least fans perceived it that way. *00:02* This was a turning point for the series that was really good, but the two games after were too much in that turning point. *00:02* Really? *00:02* But this feels like the start of a lot of modern conventions in third person action shooting games. *00:02* But per usual, let's kind of talk about this game's legacy. *00:02* And now ironically they're you know remaking the game with that same form that like advanced formula and now gonna be taking stuff from traditional Resident Evil. *00:02* Like I don't yeah. *00:02* I I don't need that right now. *00:02* She's twenty. *00:02* I I never felt like there was a lull at any point in this game. *00:02* I said, when did we get uh Metal Gear Solid Vibes with the calls? *00:02* I thought maybe there'd be like a character page and it would list that because that's kind of an old thing. *00:02* Back in the back in this day, we were still very much, here's a gameplay sequence, here's a cutscene, here's a gameplay sequence, here's a cutscene, and it would just kind of go back and forth in that way. *00:02* Like the layout, the template is there. *00:02* Like how do you make that less of a chore and more interesting? *00:02* That's what I've been collecting the last few months. *00:02* I didn't know there was a tiny Napoleon man. *00:02* Yeah. *00:02* He's just there. *00:02* I didn't look up their name before we did this. *00:02* Whatever it's called. *00:02* So there's this fog version, hookman version. *00:02* I think that does it for our Resident Evil 4 discussion. *00:02* Someone I try to not accept free stuff from listeners, but somebody *00:02* It's in great shape. *00:02* Is the pocket a good now that they released the other course for it? *00:02* Broadly speaking, though, let's dive into our histories with the game. *00:02* And I guess maybe we can segue this into our broad feelings on the game. *00:02* It's one of the it might be the Ada's mission. *00:02* It's cool to play as Ada, you know. *00:02* That's the action over the top part. *00:02* It made it this brought it all to the forefront and made it the modern standard, I feel like. *00:02* Anytime the shop gave a new shotgun or pistol or machine gun or whatever for you to buy, did you always buy that new one and then dump the old one thinking that it would inevitably end up being better? *00:02* Jeez. *00:02* Especially the parts too in this game where you have to quick like he's like running and if you tap really fast it almost looks like he's like cartoonishly running really fast. *00:02* Yeah. *00:02* Maybe. *00:02* And the way he sits in the back of the car and the cops are talking to him and stuff, it's I'm too cool for you. *00:02* Like we've traded zombies for and wolves for bugs and mind control. *00:02* And we can talk about bosses here uh in a bit. *00:02* But may either seven or two remake I feel like now like if you actually sit down and play all of them, which I haven't played all of them. *00:02* More Mike Lore, please. *00:02* Uh like you said you might get the pocket with your bonus. *00:02* Inflation, baby. *00:02* It's not Jason, it's uh I can't remember. *00:02* Yeah, she it never felt like an escort mission. *00:02* Leon is- Oh yeah, I'm seeing that right now. *00:02* And I think Max and I did literally the same thing with it because we briefly spoke about this. *00:02* So it really feels like an intense high-stakes situation. *00:02* We talked about it earlier. *00:02* And the Callisto protocol is riffing on Dead Space, but Dead Space is directly riffing on Resident Evil 4, and that's a brand new game seventeen years later that has *00:02* I just need a robe giant Salazar robot in that game for no reason at all for a five-minute sequence. *00:02* The Mr. *00:02* I invoke the VR version because Max has played that version of the game and he's going to talk about it here on this episode, I think, a bit. *00:02* I guess I don't want like a Far Cry 2 situation where you're trying to pop pills every two seconds and your sh visions getting blurry and stuff, but *00:02* That feels resident evil to me. *00:02* And that's like the nice balance is that like by the end, uh, you know, it's it's interesting too, thinking about the weapons, just because *00:02* That's that's not very good or something like that. *00:02* And it also there's not a lot of tracks in the Resident Evil 4 soundtrack. *00:02* So keep that up. *00:02* For season five, we are covering the Resident Evil franchise. *00:02* Uh this game's Metacritic score overall, as you would expect, very, very high. *00:02* No. *00:02* I just wanted to try VR and I had a quest too, and so I played *00:02* Well what's funny about that too, I I I have to mention this is when we did our uh Resident Evil One episode, Max *00:02* It's not cryptic or anything. *00:02* A w a wealthy sixteen year old teenage brat who's put into this situation. *00:02* It's like I don't know about that. *00:02* I wanna pull out my rifle because I know my rifle can penetrate that shield way more quickly than I can Oh I never did that. *00:02* And I think that's one thing they really tried to emphasize in the trailer was like him running around the village like *00:02* Please. *00:02* I'm curious with the remake out how that's impacted the price of it. *00:02* My brother-in-law bought the maxed out whatever and I saw it the other day at my in-laws. *00:02* And these these back buttons are actually I was using them to play Resident Evil, just like had this map to A so I could run without like having *00:02* Um and then I always had heard of the chainsaw guy. *00:02* I feel like that has to be out there. *00:02* Maybe there's a mod to fix it, but it's horrendous. *00:02* Uh I wanted to talk about some of the other characters with you guys outside of Leon, though. *00:02* Possibly. *00:02* I've I've already seen complaints about how she, you know, looks like Ada. *00:02* I feel like most of how she's written and acts in the game would be the actions of an annoying *00:02* I mean unless I am wrong, I'm pretty sure the voice has changed. *00:02* Now I don't know if it does leave in five and six. *00:02* I don't know if you ever bought one from the shopkeeper. *00:02* Like I said, I did want to talk about the other boss fights here though, since we were, I felt like naturally going to kind of discuss it. *00:02* I don't know. *00:02* Uh yeah, resident games are never there's never a lot of depth with the scores, but what is there always works and I I think that's really no different here with *00:02* Please don't throw it away. *00:03* I've almost gone exclusively handheld with it, which is funny because with my Switch I almost go exclusively TV with it. *00:03* Its influence, whether or not it's still maybe the best Resident Evil game of the bunch, and *00:03* Uh Wesker, who is the ongoing bad guy, is not in this game. *00:03* So he kinda is just a weird crazy man who hits on women and then all of a sudden *00:03* I was never I was never hurting for a weapon. *00:03* I get I get a kick out of it when I when I do use it, but it feels so *00:03* Oh, and the whole thing to be playable in PSVR too, please. *00:03* You know, have you looked into the Mr. *00:03* is behind the TV. *00:03* But dude, like I was when I first got it, I was playing uh Monster Hunter Rise on it pretty consistently at 60 FPS and was like, man, I would never want to play that on a switch. *00:03* Two thousand three? *00:03* But in some ways, you can kind of view it as the the beginning of the dark times of Resident Evil because absolutely *00:03* So I didn't finish it, but I got to play a little bit. *00:03* And so I it feels that's like the coziest part of the game to me. *00:03* So Well. *00:03* That happened to me, but with the cutscene with Krauser in the knife fight. *00:03* That's one thing that I dunno I was never a fan of of QTs. *00:03* Where's the web? *00:03* Sometimes we've talked about maybe doing one season a year, like a really big series though. *00:03* Not a good time to be a retro game collector at all. *00:03* I was like, I'm not gonna buy the Super NT because I'm gonna buy a Retro Tink 4K when it comes out. *00:03* So Yeah. *00:03* Promise. *00:03* Anyway, Resident Evil 4, interesting game that we're going to talk about today. *00:03* That being said, I do think it is very funny, um we mention it, that they decide to table all of this *00:03* Then Luis dies. *00:03* Like the village stuff, I think there's similar vibes you can get in other games. *00:03* I don't think it was probably the first. *00:03* I wish it was a bit more tense, I guess, or you kind of can just run away from it. *00:03* Um obviously, I I think it goes without saying that we want better shooting mechanics and better controls and all those obvious things. *00:03* Shout out to Mike, the uh helicopter pilot once again, Holland Hero. *00:03* And until next time, adios. *00:03* Like, especially I'm trying to think, man, there must be so many now. *00:03* So I'll go through phases where I use it a lot and then not very much. *00:03* Well honestly I needed the break at that point. *00:03* Max has never played this game at all, period. *00:03* If that if I do have a bone to pick with any character though, it would be Luis. *00:03* So in that regard, there's really nothing there's really no like discoverability in the game. *00:03* Like I think I had to do that part like three or four different times. *00:03* It's it's good that you are killing things left and right in this game and there's some sort of uh immediate gratification most of the time when you do kill something that you can just pick up a little something here and there and you know that you're *00:03* Who who doesn't? *00:03* Like they definitely weren't trying to to ground it in any way. *00:03* It might have freaked me out a little too much. *00:03* And then they put subtitles up and if it's uh in a different language, which is *00:03* So that part of the game I I did enjoy, but once it yeah, it gets more to the helicopter type stuff wasn't my favorite. *00:03* Yes, and you gotta throw hooks at it. *00:03* Like who is this guy? *00:03* Because I guess for me specifically, I once I got like halfway through the game, I realized I had been *00:03* X and Nemesis just scope and size of him, and then but also that Resident Evil villain classic thing where his body turns into a giant *00:03* Yes. *00:03* Original Soundchat episode 113, I believe. *00:03* And I know Max this is something you can't answer because we are halfway into this season. *00:03* Tomorrow is Tokyo Drift. *00:03* I mean I get it. *00:03* Suite though, and now the PlayStation Core is on it, and so it makes not having a modded PlayStation 1, and I don't my PS1 collection is super small, so *00:03* And so Wesker does make an appearance in this game somewhat briefly, and that's kind of sets the stage for Resident Evil 5. *00:03* So you now you're juggling an extra box of ammo in your case that you just don't even care for. *00:03* I did mention before though, I really like the Krauser fight for these same sort of reasons, though. *00:03* Uh Krauser's a good fight because he stays right on top of you the whole time. *00:03* I have no idea. *00:03* I you have to imagine that this was kind of like some of the early steps towards *00:03* It's just on a bi-weekly basis. *00:03* We'll sell it to you for two hundred dollars. *00:03* And you're like, yeah, sure. *00:03* And I would have thought a PS4 port of the game would have given it proper dual analog controls or something, but yeah, I I struggled definitely at the beginning of this game with uh *00:03* And I I considered that HD mod, which I think that uh we'll talk about that at some point, but *00:03* Ada? *00:03* And they're trying to get the they're trying to get all the viruses for Resident Evil which is then led into Resident Evil V and stuff like that. *00:03* They did not remake them for the VR version. *00:03* Smaller scope without being the whole game in VR. *00:03* I feel like they're gonna want to look at Ada while they play the game. *00:03* Anytime she got taken away, I was like, Oh, thank you. *00:03* Because the helicopter just kills pretty much everyone in front of you. *00:03* There's not a whole lot you can say about him other than his voice lines or choice. *00:03* Because you can only buy one spray can of health. *00:03* But I do know that when Village came out, people were stoked that the inventory system is very similar to Resident Evil 4. *00:03* I do also think that the number two or the right hand of Salazar or whatever, Verdugo, uh, that fight is incredibly intimidating because you *00:03* I actually found out later that you there's a setting in uh uh the VR version to completely remove the QTEs from cutscenes, which sounds really nice. *00:03* Did you guys do all the shooting range stuff by chance? *00:03* Props to them. *00:03* The save room, like you both mentioned, I I think that's a Resident Evil 4 staple in general. *00:03* So you're doing are you doing all the mainline Pokemon games? *00:03* And so then when we launch it, there's at least something there for people to grab onto and kind of get into initially. *00:03* Did you feel like you had an an idea of a lot of what was coming around the corner in this game because it's just been so ubiquitous for *00:03* You know, he's been through this horrible incident and now he's, you know, in a in a foreign country and *00:03* I I feel like the remake that's one of the things they could do in the game that could make it *00:03* Um so people really like how the inventory system is set up in this game and I think it *00:03* That's a really f atmospheric and good fight. *00:03* Because I killed him. *00:03* Um and they're you can kind of see it when you're there. *00:03* Okay, I don't even like this game. *00:03* Um but yeah. *00:03* Uh Resident Evil for his for the longest time been considered one of the best games of all time. *00:03* It'd be awesome. *00:03* Which was the point, I guess, in seven. *00:03* It's the same thing. *00:03* You didn't like Salazar? *00:03* I was getting my teeth kicked in by those zombies in that house. *00:03* Without the RE engine, uh, they don't have any of their big successes over the past couple of years. *00:03* And uh clearly they're messing with some stuff there with sideways heads and *00:03* I want that to feel more like a threat. *00:03* The sacred sales saga. *00:03* Season 5 is all about Resident Evil. *00:03* So I w I wish I would have just spent four hundred and got the base one, but uh I'm an idiot and bought *00:03* So it just felt like they made up, which I mean is fine. *00:03* Yes. *00:03* It feels like it shouldn't be this powerful or accessible, one or the other. *00:03* It also reinvented Resident Evil, so that's the other pivotal part is they wanted a cool action game instead of a survival horror mostly. *00:03* Is it the best? *00:03* I don't want it. *00:03* Would you pull the trigger? *00:03* Inflation, yeah. *00:03* The game director was Shinji Makami, once again. *00:03* And so the pause was was perfect. *00:03* There's Sadler, there's Salazar, there's uh what's his former partner. *00:03* It felt inherently Resident Evil. *00:03* Personally, uh, I got about halfway through the game and I just decided to see through my upgrades for a lot of the guns I did have on me, even though the game was then dangling *00:03* I think this game is at its best in the boss fights where you don't have a lot of room to move. *00:03* Whenever you see the blue flame or you see the merchant, you know the shop, like you're safe. *00:03* And the reason we've been doing that and banking kind of all this stuff is we're getting ready to launch a membership with this and have *00:03* What is the core of this game that we can make it about? *00:03* We'll get to that in a second though. *00:03* Yeah, the I think it's funny that the shopkeeper is honestly the most iconic character from this game other than Leon. *00:03* And as far as the like I was saying, the gun upgrades and the various *00:03* Because especially I realize this late game with the Magnum in particular, because you get that fairly late anyway. *00:03* So the striker was one that I just I just kept the riot gun and just kept upgrading that. *00:03* And when you're in that tighter space, you really can't use all your weapons. *00:03* So it's like Wii era type stuff where swing your arms this way or move your arm, you know, duck, you know. *00:03* That's what I do. *00:03* And that's like Dustin was saying, and we've said throughout this episode, it's everywhere. *00:03* Maybe tie umbrella a bit more into it. *00:03* It's um I got so lucky because I was got into it right *00:04* Like that's how much the the boom for the When did you get it? *00:04* I bought the Mr. *00:04* Yeah. *00:04* All all I knew about Resident Evil 4 before was *00:04* Because he looks straight up like a Vulgan from Metal Gear Solid 3. *00:04* And we've talked about the opening village that makes up the first chapter or so of the game. *00:04* Uh did you have a any any any favorite area, any least favorite area, and how did you feel like the game fro flowed from one space? *00:04* Like they're they're constantly putting new things in front of you and uh I do like the backtracking aspects of it. *00:04* Okay. *00:04* Uh but yeah, I just really just wanted to kind of go somewhere else to be honest. *00:04* Yeah. *00:04* It's like UPS or something and they charge out the wazoo. *00:04* Yeah I was gonna go with like the middle one I think is what I was looking at. *00:04* I have a pretty small CRT and it is widescreen, so it was like even smaller, like there's no full screen version. *00:04* Possibly. *00:04* I played two chapters of that. *00:04* This feels like, and I've heard it discussed as such. *00:04* And that mainly just just comes from him being creepy and weird, and I liked how his uh his overall design was super cool. *00:04* Or maybe you're not. *00:04* Something happened between two and four. *00:04* But a lot of the lore details are hidden behind notes and stuff listed like beside like a checkpoint or save point or something like that. *00:04* I bought that and then sold it a few shopkeepers later *00:04* But here's the reason why. *00:04* Like pretty early on in the fight. *00:04* Yeah, that's what we need. *00:04* And then my wife graciously lets me keep it in the house. *00:04* Yeah, I I I don't know. *00:04* Dustin, welcome to the show. *00:04* It's just he just does cool things. *00:04* It looks like the remake is I I feel like everything we talk about here I'm gonna naturally like *00:04* Dude, that's a good part though, because that's one of the my favorite parts where *00:04* Uh the only one I recognized there was a slipknot, so and a cure. *00:04* Um and so that's why we've been banking Pokemon. *00:04* I I've been f I fought to keep my CRT around because it was in my parents' storage forever. *00:04* That has to be a thing. *00:04* It just I don't understand how these modern HD ports haven't updated at least control scheme options or something, because it just feels so stilted *00:04* Talking about the game itself a little less broadly, I did want to start naturally with the opening of the game because *00:04* That jacket is still so cool. *00:04* Um and so yeah, I would l I would love to see that changed in the future. *00:04* It just makes no sense. *00:04* Yeah, I didn't bring that up either. *00:04* So yeah, he's he's great. *00:04* I could totally see a simulator game being something on Steam that people like. *00:04* Look at every major single player first party game now. *00:04* I just want to make sure that people find the right track because the track I'm talking about is great. *00:04* I watched some footage of what had been shown off previously *00:04* Uh, what do you guys think? *00:04* Like the blueprint is totally ready to go for the expansion. *00:04* If you uh if you ever wanted to come on and do another episode with us in the future, like we've got broad ideas for other seasons as well. *00:04* Um and it's super fun. *00:04* Do they charge you thirty dollars to ship it like they did for the an super ante? *00:04* Uh he's the one that I feel like the game centers around the most more often than not. *00:04* Church just in an A-Skin. *00:04* Some of them, particularly the Minecart one, I was getting really frustrated with. *00:04* I think it is one of the it I think it does help close the game on a strong note in that regard. *00:04* And you kinda are spraying and praying with Leon's shaky hands. *00:04* There's res there's almost three eras of Resident Evil at this point, and this is the start of the second era. *00:04* Hmm. *00:04* Like he goes down in the basement, there's like a guy with his jaw like hap or his like whole head is like sideways and um *00:04* It's like okay, this is good. *00:04* And then the first time I used my switch OLED after, I was like, oh man. *00:04* How do I run? *00:04* Yeah. *00:04* Should I wait to buy that weapon until I have a bigger case? *00:04* Um so none of us really experienced that boss fight as it was intended. *00:04* There's an ad for the uh Chainsaw Controller and Resident Evil Apocalypse *00:04* Yep. *00:04* I I can't wait to play it again for uh for this season of the show. *00:04* In the works? *00:04* I like having the physical media. *00:04* Um but I think that I think I played through most up until some point in the castle section of the game on Wii and then I *00:04* Oh no, five. *00:04* There's no really challenging puzzle in this game. *00:04* Sort of. *00:04* Krauser? *00:04* You're finding your way to Ashley. *00:04* So I definitely recommend that part of the game. *00:04* But yeah, the shop coover is great. *00:04* Verdugo is what he's listed on this list of he's the guy that when you're *00:04* It really is a sad indictment of how we are wired *00:04* I do want to say I I mentioned it at the top of the show. *00:04* There were four versions in development. *00:04* It doesn't matter if any of them play better. *00:04* I think like I'd play the VR version before the base version. *00:04* I would like that sort of stuff to be more present. *00:04* This game is so intimately known. *00:04* Silent Hill has climbed in price significantly. *00:04* Dude, you gotta have it have it ready. *00:04* They need to do it again for the remake. *00:04* They did an episode on Resident Evil 4 and Banjo Kazooie, and they talk about the plot of the game a little bit. *00:04* It's called Resident Evil 4, but it really has nothing to do with the games that came before it. *00:04* And then they give you a thermal scope and you've the regenerators are not a problem at all. *00:04* You know, it's all behind you over-the-shoulder stuff. *00:04* Like part last week's part two, the phone was not next to me. *00:04* So it's better to just not even entertain the question because then it will create conflicts in my head. *00:04* So it's like a handheld Mr. *00:04* It's so cool. *00:04* And I was like, mm, take an arrow to the knee. *00:04* It's too long. *00:04* Um but yeah, he's just this guy. *00:04* Like are they gonna have the the the bingo line in this game? *00:04* It just feels like, oh yeah, this is a Resident Evil game, so they're still here. *00:04* You guys just started like a a fantasy league with *00:04* Two weeks today actually. *00:04* You could also you know the pocket won't show up till sometime next year, so you know ordering. *00:04* Or if they're gonna release a second revision, would you wait at this point? *00:04* I don't it's it's huge. *00:04* So that was really funny to me to get that text from you *00:04* I'm not I'm not quite sure. *00:04* Like, oh, we gotta put a laboratory section in place so we can explain where all these *00:04* Yeah. *00:04* Um did you just hop on the elevator and get away from him then? *00:04* Just through the shield. *00:04* No. *00:04* We'll see. *00:04* Thank you so much for listening. *00:04* It's wild. *00:04* Well this was the part of the show that I wasn't looking forward to, uh embarrassing myself in that I realized because I couldn't remember if I'd ever finished this game. *00:04* We we go from rookie cop day one in zombie outbreak town to *00:04* Like there's the I thought that the coolest villain villain, which I also can't remember his name, is the guy that's the the leader of the village. *00:04* Because they've teased something is happening there, so maybe there's *00:04* And it's because he just stands out like a sore thumb in many ways. *00:04* Because I think we did the same thing. *00:04* Uh the wolves were in there for a little bit *00:04* He's still doing that crazy somersault out of a window *00:04* Thanks again, Dustin, for joining us. *00:04* Which so that's another one I want to baptize him in because he's never played any of them and I've played all of them. *00:04* before all the the main boards, the DE10s, the chip shortage hit and prices skyrocketed. *00:04* Like, oh yeah, we'll just kidnap the president's daughter, no one will think anything about it, and we'll ship her right back and yeah, yep, no one will think twice about what we did in that in between. *00:04* I haven't played that one yet. *00:04* But I do it as that that little bit of of tension of figuring out like, okay *00:04* And this is one thing that I wanted to make sure we talked about a little bit more directly here before we close out. *00:04* They can they can they can repurpose a third person game into a VR game. *00:04* Let me send it to you. *00:04* It's uh it's great though. *00:05* And I think you had just finished playing three and you mentioned that you were gonna go to four soon, and I hit you up and I was like, hey. *00:05* Yeah. *00:05* Like even the PS4 version, it straight up doesn't have subtitles unless you are *00:05* It's like I'm getting major Vulgan vibes from this guy. *00:05* But yeah, uh Lucas is his name. *00:05* You didn't like talking to him on your uh Metal Gear Codex, which is just a blatant ripoff *00:05* How how'd you guys feel about those elements of the game in particular? *00:05* I want one of those so bad. *00:05* So uh thank you for being patient there. *00:05* Uh I didn't know there was uh Las Plagas virus in your blood. *00:05* I think that's one of the most interesting aspects that they can improve on for that remake. *00:05* Yeah. *00:05* Yeah. *00:05* Maybe I'm wrong about that, but it definitely popularized it and I think it's largely stood the test of time. *00:05* I know there's one specific part in the castle where you can earn one outright through a sort of side tangent puzzle or enemy encounter. *00:05* I would say no, but I understand why people say that. *00:05* net. *00:05* Yeah, thanks for pausing your Resident Evil sprint for us. *00:05* Let's go. *00:05* It's now November. *00:05* I was probably even a wimp back then. *00:05* I thought he was cool and then he once you're done with the village, he's kinda out. *00:05* Cause you talked up Logan about in seven how there's the whole thing in the mines with Chris and that explains what happens to *00:05* But I I expected Ashley. *00:05* And I guess Ashley is mind-controlled by Sadler there for a moment at the end, but *00:05* Oh yeah yeah. *00:05* The part when you're held up in the house *00:05* And so I did cheat a little bit and look online and be like, okay, what is actually like it tells you the differences, but it's like, do one of these suck? *00:05* It's kind of a huge waste. *00:05* I think there are honestly like three, four games better in the series than this one. *00:05* Is it the most important? *00:05* Specifically in the trailer, we saw the introduction scene where Leon's going into the first house and it's *00:05* Yep. *00:05* Project at all? *00:05* I was like, okay, I can I can abide by that *00:05* I got it on a price error at Target for sixty bucks. *00:05* As with every other game this season, it was developed and published by Capcom, except *00:05* He's like, you gotta try this game out. *00:05* But it is a thing that I think by the end you kind of I don't know if your brain adapts, you just kind of get used to it. *00:05* It kind of it lacks the *00:05* They they throw a lot of things out the window. *00:05* Kinda like I didn't do what you did, Dustin, which was look them up and s figure out, oh, is this one going to be really stronger? *00:05* May I maybe that's just me because I have fresher eyes and can try to view them more objectively. *00:05* I think I just am starting to understand what we're doing. *00:05* And then this is early next year. *00:05* And then season six is Pokemon is our next one. *00:05* I know you've talked about it, uh *00:05* And uh see what this game's all about *00:05* I like Salazar because he, again, is so *00:05* Uh we've not talked about Luis and Ashley too much, who I feel like are the two other *00:05* And if that kills the pacing, I think, for me, especially if we're gonna keep *00:05* How am I gonna do that later? *00:05* Um either it his hand or from the explosion. *00:05* And for Resident Evil, we've got uh we're gonna do co-op and five and six together. *00:05* Like what is this? *00:05* So I I'm noticing *00:05* Max is shaking your head, and so I would love to hear what you think the lull is in the game. *00:05* That's one thing I want to do. *00:05* And then there's the minecart section *00:05* We haven't talked about the shopkeeper. *00:05* So it was already better. *00:05* Like I didn't have a whole lot of problem with the various trolls or whatever they're called that you would come across throughout the game because I was always just *00:05* But EA, the developers that made Dead Space, they cite Resident Evil 4 as an inspiration. *00:05* Dustin, what kind of ideas are you really hoping to see them put into the remake? *00:05* How do we how do we do that with the trolls? *00:05* So like we have a lot of ideas. *00:05* Those games are expensive too *00:05* And so maybe I don't know, maybe when I get my bonus. *00:05* If they can do it with the DK bongo drums, they can do it with the chainsaw. *00:05* It's so bad. *00:05* So I was like, you know what? *00:05* It feels it feels like an old game by many standards. *00:05* Krauser. *00:05* Uh I think a lot of the cool lore backstory stuff that Dustin's talking about *00:05* And I think it is one of the more interesting aspects of the game's story, but it's just *00:05* So I'm fine with it being a little bit longer. *00:05* So props on Capcom for providing *00:05* Did you have anything you want to say about the enemies or anything like that, Max? *00:05* Uh he's worse than like Joel in The Last of Us. *00:05* Yeah, chill out. *00:05* Also in a castle, I think two versions prominently in a castle, which probably explains why. *00:05* Really? *00:05* And you can follow Dustin on Twitter at DustinCanFly. *00:05* I th I see boxed emerald copies go for *00:05* And then stores obviously bump that up anyway, so it's it's nuts out there, man. *00:05* Like no reason to keep staying where I was at. *00:05* So I was so nervous. *00:05* I'm if I get a bonus for Christmas trials, like what if I just tossed it towards the Steam Deck? *00:05* Why am I aiming and stopping? *00:05* It is is awesome. *00:05* Well, it's that or drop the island. *00:05* It's just I I don't even know why you have to fight *00:05* Yes. *00:05* I looked this up off to the side. *00:05* There are ties to I mean you know more about this than I do, Max, if you want to talk about that. *00:05* I would say the only other ones that would be just as important would be Resident Evil 1, because it started everything, and then Resident Evil 7, because *00:05* Chapter Select is a max frequency production. *00:05* It's not. *00:05* It it worked out great, so that was no problem at all for me. *00:05* Um not that I was I don't know, it wasn't like Resident Evil Resident Evil 3 remake was bad or anything like that, but playing one, two, and three in a row *00:05* Dustin, we can start with you. *00:05* Okay. *00:05* So that had me going through the village area again, kind of go down and you kind of see what's happening to Leon and Luis. *00:05* It makes sense. *00:05* I think the enemies with the hoods and stuff like that are really cool in the castle. *00:05* There's just this guy wandering around and *00:05* So I'm trying to I might have used it on the last boss just because I had one. *00:05* Awesome. *00:05* And I think we've done a lot of it naturally over the course of this episode and talking about how it influenced a lot of other games within the third person genre. *00:05* Um like what like personally speaking, I think a lot of the *00:05* Mike lore. *00:05* com. *00:05* Um right now we're the active one is um *00:05* That is the thing I've always heard about Resident Evil 4. *00:05* He's like, isn't this great? *00:05* Did either of you play the Ada mission stuff? *00:05* But the merchant represents safety. *00:05* Each of them are slightly different in how they shoot, or at least between the striker and the riot gun, because I think the striker is *00:05* Oh, you can freeze him with the sensors. *00:05* It is so good. *00:05* Yeah, it's just virtually impossible not to. *00:05* I will say the the main thing for me is just that I got I bought a Switch OLED and I got this. *00:05* It's come to everything. *00:05* There's five chapters in the game, and I think he doesn't show up until like the end of the fourth, I want to say. *00:05* I had to do that with the house. *00:05* It sounded different. *00:05* Um that is something that still feels wholly *00:05* I kind of feel like that's the same thing here. *00:05* Yeah. *00:05* This is true. *00:05* The big guys are the big guys. *00:05* Uh as far as what can be improved, um the story can do a lot better. *00:05* Lean into that. *00:05* I'm not saying may turn it into a mechanic where if I don't do something in a timely manner. *00:05* Uh the one thing I have to specifically mention that I am the most morbidly curious to see in the remake, if they still do or not, is *00:05* So if you've got four hours to burn, head on over. *00:05* Thanks for having me. *00:05* You get her back. *00:05* He's got like five or six of them scattered around. *00:05* That is something they could play with in the remake and subvert expectations that way. *00:05* Seven has a taste of it. *00:05* I was like, oh yeah, there was a giant bomb attached to where I'm standing. *00:05* And I think it really uh is one of the game's stronger elements combined with the various weapons that you can use. *00:05* I got every bottle cap in the game because I am an insane person. *00:05* Like it came out at a time when you're a kid and all your friends play it. *00:05* I uh I just bought it and it was painful to a certain degree. *00:05* Yeah. *00:06* And I remember thinking at the time that I was like, I don't know if that was as good as it was hyped up. *00:06* Um I think that's one thing that *00:06* So I wonder if some of the lore stuff is *00:06* I do want to talk *00:06* Just because it was just practically one and done. *00:06* The opening village is *00:06* But yeah, we do all kinds of uh weird and and fun stuff like that and interviews and obviously Sacred Symbols, the main show is the *00:06* It's just but that's why I bought a mister. *00:06* So it's been very uh recent. *00:06* Because there's one, I think Separate Ways is the one that's like a full new chapter of the game. *00:06* It's interesting. *00:06* And he'll sell you guns and upgrades and things like that. *00:06* Which there's multiple Dr. *00:06* Yeah, they're not great, so you don't need to do them. *00:06* I did not do it in the normal version. *00:06* You can see the footage and stuff and hallucination version. *00:06* From a combat perspective as well, I'm glad that they're keeping it. *00:06* They they they know what people want and so and I think I talked earlier just about like *00:06* That's a lot of depth, I guess is what I'm saying. *00:06* Yeah, dude Soul Silver is awesome. *00:06* And uh everyone in my family thought I was a fing idiot. *00:06* Or are you all physical all the way? *00:06* So that's not as bad. *00:06* Uh, and I feel like that made a good uh *00:06* They're not sending in the SEALs. *00:06* And I believe when you get to the end of that one, she hops on a helicopter. *00:06* I don't know if there's any *00:06* Similar to Dustin. *00:06* And you're in this lab and you *00:06* You gotta support local businesses during this recession that we're in. *00:06* And then one of the Las Plagas parasites pops right out and you're like, no, now I gotta deal with this. *00:06* I it's uh it's kind of like doom eternal. *00:06* So I was I'm kind of late to *00:06* You know, you gotta have the the super. *00:06* I remember my first experience with this game, actually playing it, was when the Wii version *00:06* By the time I got to Resident Evil 4 in my series playthrough though, I was like, all right, this is the one that's gonna be *00:06* Let's make it uh Leon saving the president's daughter. *00:06* Like I just don't even want to think about it. *00:06* So the thing about *00:06* The more you invested, the more the gun would sell for. *00:06* You've got this dude who's been chasing after you the entire game who's now morphed into this really weird looking creature and it *00:06* I I kind of use that gun a lot whenever I use that so you were an SMG user. *00:06* So it's like its influence is still being felt on games that it is by product influence. *00:06* So Whoa. *00:06* Replaying Village again, you know, now with third person and VR, you know, theoretically by the time *00:06* Yep. *00:06* It's worth it. *00:06* Well, my justification is that they just *00:06* And then it's it works almost like a super NT would only. *00:06* If I don't know. *00:06* They really do. *00:06* It's a how do you hold it *00:06* But yeah, it is strange that this game has continued to be so fond in the I in the minds of many, even though *00:06* Yeah, and one of those offshoots I know um *00:06* I just think the castle's too *00:06* That's coming up. *00:06* What the Leon is the merchant. *00:06* I I I don't think any of us are gonna have anything interesting to say about the Salazar fight. *00:06* If you like, you can follow the show at Chapter Select. *00:06* It's crazy, dude. *00:06* I prefer it. *00:06* Even if you like playing on physical media like I do, I've got right. *00:06* Coming from fluidity of movement with an analog stick and VR where I can move and do whatever to *00:06* Those are about the four main bad guys in the game. *00:06* I thought I thought that was kind of interesting that they *00:06* I like the inclusion of the DLC and stuff there. *00:06* So they didn't? *00:06* She's mostly *00:06* I I think they I think a lot of the horror vibes, like I mentioned, were up front with the village. *00:06* And the game is for the most part pretty linear, so you are going to come across every *00:06* So I do appreciate *00:06* I think *00:06* I'm got so much ammo for all my other guns. *00:06* So that problem never really I mean you still had to *00:06* There must be like We've hit uh *00:06* Okay, not to bullshit too much, but I do have a question about the um *00:06* When I went to my parents, I played it. *00:06* My name is Max Roberts, and I am joined, as always, by Logan Moore. *00:06* So uh you are you are not the most novice player of Resident Evil 4 on this panel. *00:06* I even knew about the chainsaw gambe controller, which I've only seen once in person. *00:06* So two thousand five *00:06* Sad Sadler. *00:06* Like that's seriously when I heard him talk, like it made me laugh for a second. *00:06* I feel like he just kind of doesn't serve. *00:06* But I'm wondering if that's one of those situations where *00:06* And I think a lot of that is because you can *00:06* It's kind of like a horse in Breath of the Wild, like you whistle and it just shows up. *00:06* Giant uh spears at it or whatever. *00:06* So when I said I was low on ammo for the Salazar fight, it might have been because I blew. *00:06* But there are some legitimate bangers on this score that I like quite a bit. *00:06* So it's crazy. *00:06* This is the best one. *00:06* Maybe show them getting drinks, you know, like Leon said. *00:06* Like you could kill someone with it. *00:06* Um, it originally launched, though, uh on January 11th, 2005, and then was later ported to *00:06* Make up backstory and stuff for your characters, but it did it felt like I should know him. *00:06* He has some relationship with Ada. *00:06* Uh so I expected it to be way worse because of hearing things like that. *00:06* It was rough. *00:06* Awesome. *00:06* So you're only going to carry one pistol with you at a time, one shotgun with you, maybe the Magnum, and then *00:06* I just kind of want to finish upgrading this thing out and see how it turns out. *00:06* Uh initially I was gonna keep *00:06* Feels pretty fair. *00:06* We keep calling it that. *00:06* There'll be a link to it in the show notes *00:06* What's interesting about the legacy about this as well is just how *00:06* In particular just the way that they can *00:06* But what if it was turned into a boss fight instead? *00:06* For more on this season, go to chapterselect. *00:06* Yep. *00:06* So I got Silent Hill that way. *00:06* I reached out to you, so the time we're recording this is in October, November. *00:06* And it's weird because this Resident Evil 4 is *00:06* Yeah. *00:06* I mean it it's beat over your head a lot that oh Leon's infected and so is Ashley and you have to *00:06* You play as Ashley for a little bit. *00:06* Other than that though, I think the other thing about the island I that I really dislike and that stands out to me a lot is the sequence with the helicopter. *00:06* And you can't do that in this game, because they will throw you a a a QTE *00:06* Cause I knew they were just reskinned. *00:06* So I definitely would recommend that. *00:06* It's been on every console since the GameCube. *00:06* I like it when umbrella *00:06* So that's like a recent development. *00:06* It's been on PS2, PC, Wii, mobile devices. *00:06* And zombies, I know Logan, you said you're gonna call them zombies. *00:06* So like there's a ton of lingering plot threads *00:06* I just never opened that box. *00:06* The lake I feel like is the most *00:06* I think *00:06* So I Saddler's a final boss I think is pretty weak, but a lot of the other ones you guys mentioned, uh I think Menendez is a great fight because you're trapped in that *00:06* Yeah, I'm I'm excited to see because I have so much to explore still with *00:06* I was like living it with my parents for like in between apartments at the time, and I was like, okay, I just want to *00:06* with a ridiculously awesome screen attached to it. *00:06* Authentic experience, no HD mods, using the controller. *00:06* Yeah, Salazar. *00:06* Is that what we keep *00:06* Adios is actually a fitting word to end on in this episode since it's in Spain. *00:06* So I had uh I had two other CRTs that I was *00:06* Yeah. *00:06* The producer was Hiro Yuki Kobayashi, and the music this time round was done by Mizau Sinbogi. *00:06* This is exciting. *00:06* And then some of his moments in the game, like I think of the uh the big QTE sequence, which happens, which is not *00:06* Yeah, I didn't find it to be that cumbersome, to be honest. *00:06* But *00:06* So I tried *00:06* I'll pay attention *00:06* Capcom right now is like on its A game, so I feel like, and based on what we've seen, it's like it just seems like it's gonna be a home run. *00:06* Please *00:06* So we have like Pokemon battles between Logan and myself. *00:06* That's the that's the fear that I have, which is probably gonna become well it won't this room won't work as a baby *00:06* Hello everybody, and welcome to Chapter Select, a seasonal podcast where we bounce back and forth between a series *00:06* Like what you buying? *00:06* I'm like, this game's weird. *00:06* So I played it. *00:06* I dabbled in the Wii version just kinda to the village part because I wanted to see what the pointer controls were all about. *00:06* They brought back the uh the mission with Tofu and uh what's the other person's name? *00:06* I mean, there's even an offshoot in the castle where you do like fight things in a lava room. *00:06* Like I think any of the boss fights where you're allowed to use your rifle, which I found to be one of the stronger *00:06* Um and but then there's uh obviously the save music theme or what yeah, it's the save music theme, the typewriter theme in this game is great and that's *00:06* And I think that's probably the other main aspect is that *00:06* How has that infiltrated the lives of these people? *00:06* The document just keeps growing. *00:06* And I got through the village. *00:07* That was something that when I was replaying, I was like, oh yeah. *00:07* I was like, it's a cutscene. *00:07* So his name Dr. *00:07* So definitely uh and is that one of the movies? *00:07* One of the *00:07* This game was greatly influential within Capcom as a company before it even *00:07* Arguably *00:07* Yeah. *00:07* So *00:07* I thought that was kinda interesting. *00:07* So *00:07* Um, and then moving on to the castle where you can have tons more puzzles and stuff like that and more *00:07* Uh like for the most part. *00:07* Me neither. *00:07* And even nowadays, like a a lot of games still do this sort of upgrade system within their games and *00:07* And Cap Capcom just has *00:07* And so *00:07* And I always love that feeling of like, ah, okay, I'm safe. *00:07* But I heard they're doing a four K one. *00:07* No, that's not what he says because Leon is not a pedophile. *00:07* That's right. *00:07* Lucas. *00:07* But um I do feel though, despite that *00:07* Uh and yes, I think it does *00:07* He's just trying to make a a dollar or two. *00:07* Okay. *00:07* It's Ada's Mission and Ada's Mission in separate ways. *00:07* Yeah. *00:07* Like I prefer it. *00:07* How how many years ago was it? *00:07* Yeah. *00:07* Like that's *00:07* I don't have a lot to say about her personally. *00:07* It's more challenging, I think, which makes sense. *00:07* And I we all use it on Salazar. *00:07* It's not a soundtrack you necessarily notice. *00:07* I think the freedom of movement and the atmosphere there. *00:07* I I guess if Wesker's trying to steal the the virus that they don't have a tie, but more umbrella. *00:07* Yeah. *00:07* I it's hard to say whether or not you should wait. *00:07* That would be I honestly even I wouldn't be surprised if someone eventually releases a OLED mod. *00:07* And then even then, the tests that people were doing with the SD card were not *00:07* Very interesting game. *00:07* How how did you guys feel about that opening? *00:07* I guess they designed at least that part of it, where I didn't feel like I was telling her to follow or stop too much. *00:07* Uh le li less so on village, but like *00:07* I think the reason I don't like that is because it just feels like it's *00:07* When you see the merchant, you know you're safe. *00:07* And it's funny because there's probably so many copies out there. *00:07* Uh when I was playing *00:07* And it is a greatly influential game, and we're uh *00:07* Uh or something like that. *00:07* So *00:07* And I've always wondered with people that, you know, swear by this game, and I think that it is a good game. *00:07* And it's funny because I was what I was thinking about it, maybe I'm totally wrong about this, but *00:07* Uh they they remade some of those. *00:07* Like you gave a rundown of everything that happens from start to finish within the castle. *00:07* There's one *00:07* But I kinda I kinda like that he has this mystique. *00:07* Yeah. *00:07* If you want to *00:07* Well, uh including the final one. *00:07* So I like am totally cool if someone feels that way. *00:07* It's it's so hard to say just because like um *00:07* He's got a good setup there. *00:07* Yeah. *00:07* The OLED screen on the switch is. *00:07* I oh *00:07* Yes, that is what his *00:07* I mean, this game even takes place after Coveronica *00:07* Okay. *00:07* So it's there you go. *00:07* Inventory management. *00:07* Like that's one of the things I don't like about like the early God of War games and stuff like that. *00:07* I played *00:07* I kept the box, I kept the Pokewalker, I've got like I have it complete. *00:07* I *00:07* But NES, Super Nintendo, those types of things, all work on it. *00:07* And then I'm gonna be too late to buying this one and I'll just regret that I didn't wait because then the *00:07* I played this before I've told my story on this season of the podcast already, how I was *00:07* Over here, stranger. *00:07* And while I think he is a terrible, terrible character within this game *00:07* When you're talking about it on Sacred Symbols, it's like, dang it, man. *00:07* I had a year between them, so *00:07* So I guess we've mentioned a lot of this throughout the episode, but speaking more directly to it *00:07* Dang, that's awesome. *00:07* I will say that I do regret buying *00:07* I don't think this is a bad video game by any means. *00:07* It's hard to talk about this game nowadays without talking about the remake that's gonna be out in what five months or something like that *00:07* They're not sending in the mill they're sending in Leon S. *00:07* So Lucas Baker. *00:07* It's too long. *00:07* Oh yeah. *00:07* The remake, I pretty sure they changed his voice. *00:07* It very much sounded different. *00:07* And then *00:07* I liked the ones that stand out. *00:07* But I was gonna say that t the I always appreciate the typewriter, even if it's *00:07* But also like *00:07* It evens out. *00:07* Is that like an ideal *00:07* How does this work? *00:07* And I *00:07* There's like *00:07* I was like, this is cool. *00:07* And if you have one already, he won't sell you another one. *00:07* You don't get to control the orientation of items. *00:07* The phone was in a different room. *00:07* But when you hear that chainsaw, you're like, oh no, okay, here we go. *00:07* Don't worry about it. *00:07* Sound like *00:07* Definitely. *00:07* Well no armature did not. *00:07* So I like the scary stuff. *00:07* Yeah, I don't know. *00:07* I just couldn't get through the swarms of enemies. *00:07* Stuff like that. *00:07* I just said I'm okay, I'm out. *00:07* Salvador. *00:07* We made you listen to the cure. *00:07* There's one with a shield. *00:07* But Devil May Cry came out of this 'cause they wanted to make a very cool and stylish game, but then it went so far in cool and stylish that *00:07* How do we do that with the the lake? *00:07* When a complete inbox copy that I saw. *00:07* So *00:07* The *00:07* I assume you have played Resident Evil 4 before *00:07* Like I get what the intent was, but it I think ultimately is more annoying than *00:07* And *00:07* There's a there's a timer, you so that you feel artificial pressure to kill him fast. *00:07* It's like an early two thousands drumming or late nineties almost like *00:07* So I would, you know, recommend that before anything. *00:07* Yeah, dude, thanks for having me. *00:07* You can't see that. *00:08* I mean it's two years, so it could be. *00:08* Um I like being able to come on a show just to talk about like one game and really deep dives. *00:08* Um *00:08* I will say though, VR Bo, awesome. *00:08* It's a whole thing. *00:08* If a power washing game can become one of the top games on Game Pass, I'm sure there's a organization *00:08* Sal Salvador comes from his bottle cap, which is the thing that you can win from uh *00:08* I didn't know it would come from the bottle cap. *00:08* That's a fun fight, I thought. *00:08* I want *00:08* And so it f *00:08* Like it's not just *00:08* Salvators in the game, but *00:08* The Wikipedia, if this can be as the believed as the source, I mean it. *00:08* Kind of an interesting meta look at it. *00:08* So I don't know if it's that. *00:08* And also just the idea of like redeeming some of the *00:08* But they took Village. *00:08* I don't know. *00:08* I uh anytime there's a lab section in any of these games, I feel like it's just *00:08* And then it was *00:08* Um and this can maybe lead into how we *00:08* Yeah, it it it it's weird that uh I think it's kind of weird that the RPG's in the game. *00:08* I st I'm that's one of the games that I have that I'm so glad I didn't sell that I have my original *00:08* And then dude, the Steam sink, the the cloud save sync with your PC for that reason. *00:08* He's super cool. *00:08* And we went way into action. *00:08* Um I didn't know if I was supposed to know him because he knows Ada and Wesker. *00:08* Did you play separate ways by chance, Max? *00:08* It *00:08* So they were doing some funky stuff before they settled on the main lane here. *00:08* It's like I need help. *00:08* Uh I would not *00:08* It's the best Resident Evil game. *00:08* Yeah, and then uh and then a week later on Sacred Symbols, it was like *00:08* He also tried this with Dark Souls, and I just got stepped on by the giant creature at the start of that game. *00:08* And they did the same thing in Seven too. *00:08* I I would consider the trolls uh one, even though there's like multiple instances where you run across them. *00:08* Or three, you know. *00:08* And then he comes in here with the Ashley Jetsky line, which is fantastic. *00:08* Like absolutely horrible. *00:08* Krauser Krauser come from *00:08* Did you guys have anything to say about the lake in particular that stood out other than maybe the bosses and stuff like that that are at this point? *00:08* Yeah. *00:08* We're actually *00:08* Definitely I I can understand that. *00:08* It doesn't do tank controls anymore. *00:08* And I was what's funny about it and they're remaking it and now this kind of *00:08* Gosh, you could probably fill a book with just his one-liners from the game. *00:08* I think in um *00:08* Uh and then there's the lake and the castle and then you get the final island that you're on and stuff like that. *00:08* I think dude, I think he's great. *00:08* I know you were going to. *00:08* I feel like certain weapons have certain benefits. *00:08* But nice. *00:08* Um *00:08* Yeah. *00:08* There's really nothing that you need to do *00:08* I just grabbed my phone and then he killed you. *00:08* I'm surprised to hear that. *00:08* Like weapon sway is *00:08* And uh really shook up Leon. *00:08* I was nervous I wasn't gonna be slow because of the baby. *00:08* Cause this is like I feel like I'm in like a weird middle ground now. *00:08* What d did you guys guys have any strong or *00:08* Well yeah that's especially with the dress and everything I've *00:08* I don't know. *00:08* I will say about the island, at least the start of the island. *00:08* I don't think they've released the cast list yet for the remake, but just hearing him in the trailer, his accent sounded *00:08* I wasn't gonna use it, because I was gonna save it. *00:08* I Sal Salazar. *00:08* But is this the *00:08* That seems so over the top that I could see them cutting it. *00:08* He's the executive producer over at Last Stand Media. *00:08* So yeah that's the plan. *00:08* What brought you there? *00:08* I *00:08* The pocket. *00:08* So I do like what he represents mechanically as well within the game. *00:08* Which it's interesting just because it does *00:08* Um *00:08* This episode was researched, produced, and edited by me, Max Roberts. *00:08* Um *00:08* Here I'll help a dog. *00:08* I'm just gonna unload everything I have into this guy because I know the game is over after this point. *00:08* Like *00:08* Three, three and hours. *00:08* It's just the most outlandish thing they could have *00:08* And also I wanted the trophy for it because I have a problem. *00:08* The clickers *00:08* But when you're talking $800, it's like Yeah. *00:08* But so I realized I'd never *00:08* We've got *00:08* I'm wondering if they'll do the same *00:08* I do want to give a shout out to the lake section though, um, because it feels *00:08* I can't believe the president sent the guy with *00:08* It's, I mean, it's been on an iPod Touch for Pete's sake. *00:08* A little less. *00:09* Like you take him out. *00:09* Uh separate ways and something else? *00:09* Before we get I th there's a lot of like mechanical things I want to talk about with this game and a lot of things that I think are *00:09* The castle is it's a long stretch. *00:09* Was the inventory systems dope? *00:09* You never have to really face the creature. *00:09* Not that we don't have QTEs at all anymore, but very specifically these these cutscene QTEs. *00:09* Um, not that it was and I guess sometimes that's a good thing if you don't *00:09* So it's *00:09* com forward slash season 5. *00:09* Alright. *00:09* Um *00:09* I was like, oh, it's that guy. *00:09* Okay. *00:09* Yeah. *00:09* I think that's one of the things that undermines the Saddler fight. *00:09* Village is a first-person game, now a third-person game and a VR game. *00:09* Well that sucks. *00:09* So it's *00:09* But until then, Max, let's do our *00:09* Uh it scored a 96 out of 100. *00:09* I it's if we're gonna do action stuff, it might as might as well be stupid and over the top. *00:09* And Dustin, I don't know where you're at. *00:09* Uh I really think they've already I think they've already confirmed that it isn't there. *00:09* So *00:09* You can follow Logan on Twitter at Moreman Twelve and his writing over at comicbook. *00:09* This was awesome. *00:09* So we've been playing those games. *00:09* And then *00:09* I was still at my old job. *00:09* Um I don't know if the same was true for either of you guys *00:09* I was *00:09* There's they cough blood once. *00:09* I I think that's a pretty fun fight overall. *00:09* That's really funny. *00:09* I caught myself doing it at one part late in the game and I tossed it away very quickly. *00:09* Oh yeah. *00:09* But I don't think four is the best as it stands. *00:09* So like, yeah, the the ports of this game over the years have been *00:09* It's not even that it's that *00:09* I had no idea though before I used it that it was a one-hit *00:09* It clearly can be done. *00:09* So the uh *00:09* That would be a tough call for me. *00:09* So I mean it's all it's possible that they could *00:09* He's just, you know, small businessman. *00:09* Not that you get all your money back. *00:09* I'm like, well *00:09* Yeah, and I I'm pretty sure you can actually kill him if you actually *00:09* Of course Leon is blocking a chainsaw with a knife. *00:09* I've got the Trinitron in there. *00:09* Definitely. *00:09* I think that's actually where I stopped in separate ways is they meet outside of that barn. *00:09* What are you buying, guys? *00:09* So I had everything. *00:09* Out there. *00:09* They're like, why are you spending two hundred dollars on this? *00:09* So that's a thought that has filled my head, but it's one that should probably *00:09* I do agree with you though with what you were saying about *00:09* I specifically though did not use it against Sadler for *00:09* But *00:09* But a lot I mean, even games like *00:09* The castle? *00:09* So we will we we we'll bring it up a little bit, but it's not gonna be the *00:09* It's an add-on for you're supposed to play after you play the game. *00:09* And so *00:09* Three to three to four. *00:09* They did it for like news stations and stuff and I was like, this is a weird question, but do you have *00:09* It's never uh as someone who was *00:09* But it's weird because this game, it's not like *00:09* Maybe have something attack you at one of them. *00:09* And then just ran to the elevator at that point, but I attempted to kill him. *00:09* And my situation was different because I was running out of ammo. *00:09* Yeah from the clothers and stuff. *00:09* I just I want that to have a bit more weight to it, I think. *00:09* He's got this big trench coat *00:09* But I could have just done it with a regular pistol and then shot him with a rocket launcher and got the same effect *00:09* The wolverine *00:09* Okay, it's for Ada's mission then I believe. *00:09* It doesn't hit you in the ears right away. *00:09* Hi Logan. *00:10* Nothing, man. *00:10* So Max has never done actual proper *00:10* He's like always jumping out of stuff. *00:10* It's not zombies, it's like a mind control parasite. *00:10* And it's one of those things too, um *00:10* You you do. *00:10* I actually just looked up. *00:10* I can hear that sound. *00:10* I had a really great time. *00:10* And I thought, okay, I just need to, you know what? *00:10* He's *00:10* There's like a little lab you go through in the mines in Seven suddenly *00:10* He's just *00:10* I was like, all right, enough *00:10* So that felt a little weird. *00:10* I understand that. *00:10* Um it's almost like I guess each section, I guess, would have its own *00:10* Uh I felt like they were all the same. *00:10* But beyond that, like *00:10* And so the idea is to bank a bunch of this now. *00:10* I think most of them are around closer to like 30. *00:10* Eh. *00:10* So I ended up doing that fight twice and then uh *00:10* He was down here for a work trip. *00:10* Uh maybe not the powder box, but *00:10* But that's not really anything new, I guess, for *00:10* I just knew I had enough money *00:10* Um but what do you think about the other bosses in the game and *00:10* It's weird, it's out of place, but it's different, and I I I just think *00:10* Like I haven't finished five. *00:10* I'm just here to kill the zombies and make out with my *00:10* What are you buying? *00:10* Um and then those sort of *00:10* I think it's interesting to think about *00:10* But again, I totally *00:10* Like Not to say Ashley's a horse, but *00:10* I was watching your uh VR stream when you were doing that *00:10* I don't know what the heck is up with that. *00:10* That is the one weapon I did not use at all. *00:10* Yeah. *00:10* Uh coming across all them and *00:10* And so what makes this *00:10* And then *00:10* Like I said, I have feelings like that towards games. *00:10* That sound dude that sounds awesome. *00:10* So I do know *00:10* Saddler. *00:10* So apparently they were *00:10* And they're like, why do you have this? *00:10* The time this is publishing is months down the road *00:10* Like I thought those modern ports would have some quality of life improvements, and that's just *00:10* Kennedy. *00:10* I think of one *00:10* Yeah, for sure. *00:10* Dude, I want one of those too. *00:10* 5 *00:10* Good job, Leon. *00:10* All I knew was you were Leon and there's a village. *00:10* I know you mentioned you still haven't played a couple of them. *00:10* And I under I have games like this where I am *00:10* It depends on the day. *00:10* So *00:11* It was either twenty *00:11* Yeah. *00:11* And *00:11* But *00:11* Like there's just a lava room in the castle. *00:11* For the most part, I believe. *00:11* You can listen to *00:11* And now that I have played it again *00:11* And I had no idea. *00:11* I just don't find them that compelling as a game mechanic. *00:11* And like *00:11* So *00:11* Oh a Trinitron nice. *00:11* In fact, it's pretty darn good. *00:11* So *00:11* Like *00:11* If you're if you don't get motion sick *00:11* So I know. *00:11* But I say wait. *00:11* Uh the *00:11* I forget the other name of it. *00:11* And so they're the same in theory, but they are a little bit different. *00:11* Uh *00:11* The voice actor *00:11* But *00:11* I think is a game on Steam where it is just literally *00:11* Yeah. *00:11* Dustin and I don't agree on this. *00:11* So I got in right before that happened. *00:11* I've never touched six *00:11* So *00:11* Eh. *00:11* Um especially by 2022. *00:11* Thank God. *00:11* I don't know if either of you guys *00:11* Almost like uh *00:11* You don't have a whole lot of time to figure out *00:11* I have been *00:11* It doesn't take *00:12* I'm like *00:12* So but that's gonna be another *00:12* Yeah, it's an interesting *00:12* Actually *00:12* And *00:12* Go for it. *00:12* I'm like *00:12* And uh I don't know *00:12* Like I know *00:12* Is that your CRT behind you? *00:12* Hunk is it Hunk, I think? *00:12* Like I don't wanna *00:12* Mm-hmm. *00:12* They confirmed that? *00:12* I uh *00:12* And I was like, okay, well *00:12* It's just adds *00:12* He just *00:12* Or how did you go about that *00:12* Good job, sir. *00:12* So. *00:12* It's wild. *00:12* It's awesome. *00:12* Yeah. *00:12* This is gonna be awesome. *00:12* Like I understand *00:12* Go for it. *00:12* That feels totally *00:12* The *00:12* Umbrella's fun. *00:12* Yes. *00:13* So I th I must have been missing something. *00:13* But *00:13* But *00:13* Okay, good *00:13* And *00:13* I'm exp *00:13* Um *00:13* But *00:13* Good job. *00:13* com. *00:14*
