solidarity. *00:00* I don't actually believe, but the best thing that I think you can do is just be present and be present for your little girl, be present for Abby, and be present. *00:00* And that's when you can worry about the things like, have I taken enough video or am I taking too many pictures? *00:00* I'm excited that you get to, to the to the degree that you want to, get to record what your thoughts are about it because as creepy and weird as I think it would be to hear my parents talk about what it was like to bring me home as because I'm the eldest of three boys. *00:00* uh sucking her thumb or playing with her toes or whatever kids do. *00:00* with a little bit of bokeh. *00:00* preeclampsia and she's okay and so is the baby but obviously super serious stuff and so afterwards she's like I'm done with this whole having kids thing *00:00* And yeah, I uh again, I'm not trying to say that you've chosen poorly or anything like that. *00:00* The stroller down, all and up. *00:00* You don't when Abby doesn't feel her kicking for an hour or something like that. *00:00* And then, you know, the woman, no matter how the baby is is delivered, has to recover and depending on the delivery mechanism and how big the baby is, that recovery can be more or less difficult. *00:00* Whenever you decide it's appropriate to do so, I I strongly encourage you to to try to do that in whatever it is. *00:00* And like be married. *00:00* And but nevertheless, I'm trying very hard to build a a genuine interest in it *00:00* Yeah, yeah. *00:00* Is there a membership? *00:00* But podcaster is that I've decided that uh every year iPhones are part of the job now. *00:00* Uh so Aaron and I are coming off 13 pros and we are we are are uh we actually have three uh iPhone 14 pros coming. *00:00* So clearly something had failed, but I had no idea what. *00:00* I don't know. *00:00* And I will be returning the one that is that arrives via UPS. *00:00* iPhone four iPhone 14 Pros, we are not max people. *00:00* Uh those will be here tomorrow actually. *00:00* Uh the silicone case for her. *00:00* People are like, but it's just a phone. *00:00* And we got uh a pretty good prime lens, and this was all on the recommendation of my friend Sean Blanc, uh, because that's what he was rocking at the time. *00:00* Uh we did this camera compared to the then current iPhone for sure took phenomenal pictures. *00:00* I mean, it's not as good as like a full-size DSLR or, you know, a full frame camera like some of these Sonys that a lot of my friends are rocking these days. *00:00* I think it was a couple of years ago, maybe around two-ish years ago, I started really, very rarely reaching for my Olympus. *00:00* I don't think that was really the case, but I am very curious if you even have a big camera, you know, what you find your breakdown to be. *00:00* I think you'll surprise yourself how infrequently you will you will reach for that. *00:00* where either import or export or maybe even domestically, they had to classify themselves as like video cameras. *00:00* W one thing he said was um date the camera uh marry the glass. *00:00* I'm excited to the justification, again, I'm using this kid to spend a lot of money. *00:00* It I mean to this day, again, when we have a special event, I've become the de facto family photojournalist for or even friend photojournalist amongst, you know, all of my peers in my family because *00:00* I'm the only one with a really nice camera. *00:00* It's not one of these like $3,000 Sonys that like Marco is buying or anything like that, you know, just for the body. *00:00* of whatever's happening. *00:00* I want to have all the tools available to do that. *00:00* I don't always have. *00:00* And knowing your guys' story, all of that coming in, and then I'm right there. *00:00* Probably not as often as I should, but I try. *00:00* And that's not very freaking fair, is it? *00:00* She's big enough that she shouldn't have done that. *00:00* He was the first person to say it to me, although it's a very common phrase. *00:00* And it's not that Michaela doesn't count or doesn't matter. *00:00* Although for different reasons, but there's only one kid that makes you a parent. *00:00* And I'm not trying to take away from anyone who doesn't have these problems. *00:00* phone and that that's perfectly recent. *00:00* How do I make sure this baby is still breathing? *00:00* play this game or have access to this or whatever. *00:00* All my art is down and now we have jungle animals up because we're jungle themed people. *00:00* Oh my. *00:00* And it's like the coolest thing I've ever seen. *00:00* What we did was there was some company that made yellow like microwave bags. *00:00* Uh th I could go on a three-hour tangent. *00:00* Oh, it was a pain. *00:00* We had rented um a sedan when we got to Florida. *00:00* And so I was in the back with him and then we had to like shove the the stroller into the passenger seat next to Aaron. *00:00* It's time. *00:00* Like Abby would be fine, your little girl would be fine, a short of a major, major, major, you know, issue. *00:00* Yeah, this waiting game, it it's not a fun game and and it's tough. *00:00* getting up or down is physically challenging, if not painful. *00:00* while Aaron was pregnant with Declan, although I don't remember exactly when it was. *00:00* Yep. *00:00* Both of our kids were relatively large. *00:00* Why did why do women sign up for this, man? *00:00* basically said, oh, she just slid right out. *00:00* I'm so pumped. *00:00* She knows what it sounds like when I chant chant Red Bull, Red Bull in the house. *00:00* But I'll allow it. *00:00* It it was very helpful for helpful for me. *00:00* That is not an option at the new company. *00:00* and I've only accrued by the time she's born four days. *00:00* they keep you at the hospital for a day, roughly, is my understanding. *00:00* I quite honestly, boss, if you're listening to this, I don't know how productive I'll be then. *00:00* Um, but then my like zinger or whatever to make everyone feel really good was, but you all, the people there, have taught us how to love each other. *00:00* Uh you know, I don't care how if you've been married ten minutes, ten years, or ten days, that's a challenging thing to do. *00:00* that I had taken more video, and maybe not fewer pictures, but you know, at least had the presence of mind to take more video. *00:00* Or I should say she was quicker not to punt and take all of the responsibil overnight responsibility on because I went back to work quicker with him than I did with Michaela. *00:00* When they cross like the four hour threshold and then like the six hour threshold, it was like you're a new freaking human because you've never felt better in your whole life. *00:00* Those are all life-changing events that that totally alter your existence in your day-to-day world. *00:00* that I could say to you, this is exactly what to expect. *00:00* When you get to that point and you're no longer in survival mode, it's magical and it's frustrating and it's hard and it's difficult and it's challenging and it's infuriating. *00:00* I I I don't think that there's a laundry list of wrongs that they have committed, but you still do what you can to right the wrongs of your parents and to be better than your parents. *00:00* or anything in between. *00:00* Yeah, yeah, yeah. *00:00* conquer and I don't mean that again in a flippant way, you know, it's fine. *00:00* I d I don't feel that way, and that's not it's not because I don't love Michaela to death. *00:00* She's my youngest kid. *00:00* uh maybe opportunities, but they're they're both their own people in very, very different ways. *00:00* Some people would maybe say that's selfish, and maybe it is. *00:00* I heard somebody say, like, when you have a kid, your heart kind of leaves your body and it's carried in this other person or other persons. *00:00* now we are l able to, you know, play with friends again in the way they they should have been able to, all things being equal for the last couple of years. *00:00* loving every second of it, or when we give them the special treat that they've always wanted, or whatever. *00:00* uh there's something to be said for that record existing if if your little girl wants it or if future you wants it. *00:00* We'll see how that goes, but my my plan is not to just be anything you want. *00:00* I was trying to come up with a C alliteration and I've come up with the whole wait in line thing for a couple of years when they didn't ship them to the house on uh on on the first day. *00:00* And I don't know why I didn't have them together, but that's neither here here nor there. *00:00* losers in the in the houses near the corporate center, don't be creepy. *00:00* and my phone together for in-store pickup for like 8. *00:00* Marco. *00:00* But it's been a it's been a long time since I've had a Apple case on my phone. *00:00* And he loves his like 100 super X zoom. *00:00* But that's a gimmick, right? *00:00* time I don't even rem remember what phone I was on and I'm I'm not gonna try to look it up right this minute but at the time uh we had just bought a Olympus uh micro four thirds camera uh uh an OMD EM10 uh the first edition of it *00:00* But nevertheless, it was it was really good. *00:00* If I'm trying to get something with like the sky where HDR would be useful, then here again I'm reaching for the iPhone, not the Olympus. *00:00* Cameras for some reason have a twenty-nine minute and fifty-nine second time limit on recording video. *00:00* Uh jailbreak is probably the wrong term for this, but you can modify the software on the camera, but then that voids your warranty. *00:00* So I have that body, but it just came with a kit lens and a a zoom like a what to 200 millimeter lens and then a 18 to 35, just the kit stuff. *00:00* At least until I guess that expires. *00:00* Um oh I can imagine. *00:00* Something I've thought about and think about a lot is something you touched on just a moment ago, which is the kids are only going to be this big once. *00:00* I want to document the snot out of this big, be that infant, be that baby, be that toddler, be that in, you know, Declan's in second grade now, Michaela's in preschool. *00:00* that is still useful when we go to the swimming pool because I can bring the GoPro into the pool and not care. *00:00* I I sincerely doubt you will regret it. *00:00* And I used it for both of them. *00:00* is a picture of Erin shortly, uh I think within thirty seconds of Declan having been put on her for, you know, like uh skin to skin. *00:00* And I think this is the best best picture I will probably ever take in my entire life. *00:00* I don't remember if we spoke about this on on your show when when I was here last, but you know, Aaron and I had a lot of trouble getting pregnant with both our kids. *00:00* And if you look at this picture, which I I presume Max will put in the show notes, my little blog post about this, um, if you look very closely, you can see like a tear or the the path of a tear having gone down her her eye and her cheek. *00:00* Crying because I was just like and part of that is because this is Well, you're right at the precipice, you know. *00:00* Uh that was another just kind of like cow pow right to me. *00:00* I don't wish fertility problems upon anyone, really, but there is a little bit of a silver lining to that insofar as *00:00* It's easier for me to remind myself when I think, oh my gosh, would the kids stop killing each other for one freaking second? *00:00* It is a gift and a blessing that either of our kids exists, much less the both of them. *00:00* And it's hard it's well, maybe not hard, but I try very hard not to be that way, even though that's like my default operating procedure is like, well, why why did she spill over the floor? *00:00* It it it changed my perspective. *00:00* what first time parents should like do and feel and stuff. *00:00* I I vividly remember like bawling when we were at the fertility doctor's office and we heard Declan's heartbeat for the first time. *00:00* I remember it like it was yesterday, and he turns eight years old next month. *00:00* Which obviously is impossible, but that's how it seems. *00:00* you know, like a three weeks ago or something like that. *00:00* who maybe has gas but has no mechanism with which to tell you that when you haven't slept but three hours in the last three days, or maybe you've slept, you know, ten hours but you've done it in half an hour clips. *00:00* you're going to hate that child with all of your with all of your being. *00:00* Will you re will you be more obsessed with another person's bowels than when you have a child? *00:00* Uh it it's it's uh it's all preparing the way, and that's you know stolen from my beloved co-host John Syracuse. *00:00* What have you been what have been what have you been doing to prepare the way? *00:00* My office is now a nursery with a desk in it. *00:00* Which baby literature is very interesting. *00:00* I don't really want to almost die again. *00:00* The r the rubber wheels didn't look like bicycle tires. *00:00* That that's what we ended up doing. *00:00* And so you may not, again, leaving COVID aside, you may not want to leave the house for like six months or whatever, but if you choose to, perhaps something portable, maybe you would use the bags like when you're traveling and use the sterilizer at home or something like that. *00:00* for now, much less. *00:00* And there's the car seat because we were renting a car. *00:00* And we we didn't want to just rent a car seat, first-time parents, don't trust other people's stuff, blah, blah, blah. *00:00* But um we we ended up that I would ha I had to sit in the back with Declan because he needed somebody in the back with him because he was the world world's worst car traveler. *00:00* It's an adventure and it's part of life. *00:00* Ever since you guys had the baby monitor discussion in I honestly I just searched baby monitor in the episode list, so I'll have to find it later. *00:00* Um so I bought one of those. *00:00* is not like to have 4K streaming quality of your baby in a crib. *00:00* Um Ah, indeed. *00:00* Because when that when she shows up, it is kind of earth shattering and world ending. *00:00* I can't fathom what that feels like. *00:00* for about a day with each kid and yet uh her her younger brother just had their first uh month ago, month a month and a half ago. *00:00* But it has been it's the most incredible thing to watch. *00:00* I don't feel emotionally prepared for however I'm going to feel when I see our daughter because you can you can tell someone *00:00* You know, it's gonna change the world. *00:00* Yep. *00:00* Max Verstappen onesie and she'll be born kinda toward the tail end of this F one season. *00:00* I I I don't want to be um uncouth, but suffice to say that, you know, in generally speaking, men get to have, you know, the fun parts of of *00:00* After the first month or two, the the consultants that we had spoken to, and I I'm not saying this is right or wrong, but the ones that we had spoken to had said, you know, for the for the beginning, if you can *00:00* Try not to introduce a bottle right away. *00:00* And the baby is just gonna want food as easily as it possibly can get it. *00:00* Um, and so it took a while before we introduced a bottle to either kid. *00:00* And then, and she didn't do this all the time, but you know, occasionally she would pump and then basically hand me that milk immediately, and then I would feed the baby with a bottle with breast milk. *00:00* The baby will not be fine if it's not fed when it wants to be, especially when it's brand new. *00:00* the folly of this plan, which is that now two people are losing sleep for no good reason, and the first two months of baby *00:00* Do what you can to sleep. *00:00* And then I would come in and change and burp, or I think that was right, something along those lines. *00:00* Um, and then I would do everything else. *00:00* Based on when the babies do, that basically would take her through Christmas. *00:00* But um but but it was i uh the more involvement I had, the better I felt about it. *00:00* Abby Gitt is a teacher at a private school. *00:00* by five hundred and twenty dollars. *00:00* And, you know, you're but you're working. *00:00* I'm excited to learn how to balance all these challenges and things, but also I just don't know how it's gonna go. *00:00* I kept saying the whole engagement, no one teaches you how to get married, like what you've got to do, how much it costs. *00:00* my circle glasses and I I looked. *00:00* Like when I met Abby, I didn't know my life was going to change forever right away. *00:00* But in the grand scheme of things. *00:00* And you're exactly right. *00:00* And the best I can recommend is to do the thing that I think all of us have found very difficult to do over the last few years. *00:00* Now, in some ways that's something that that can be dumb things like make sure you grab some food on the way to the hospital because that's probably the last time your wife's gonna be able to eat for anywhere between eight and thirty hours. *00:00* And maybe the last time you'll be able to eat, depending on whether or not you have people there nearby to bring you food or if you can run over to the hospital, you know, cafeteria or whatever. *00:00* But it may end up that you find that reserving a conference room at the local library and bringing all your equipment down there is a better fit. *00:00* I i you would think I mean it would have to be fairly easy, they're so thin. *00:00* It it's just you just gotta do what you can to to be there, be present, be aware. *00:00* Something's gotta go. *00:00* They didn't sleep spectacularly overnight, and they never do at first because they have to feed every like three hours or whatever, but they did op they did pretty well. *00:00* all the time breastfeeding and there was not a lot I could do about that. *00:00* You conceptually get what it's like to arrive in a new place, maybe ph maybe physically or geographically, maybe you know, figuratively speaking, to arrive at a new job, to arrive at a new home, to arrive in a new town where you're going to live. *00:00* But it's always magical. *00:00* Try your damnedest, you'll eventually will fail, because everyone does, but to try your damnedest to right the wrongs of your parents. *00:00* It's so much fun. *00:00* That it is it is otherworldly seeing your spouse go through that and and power through that and and overcome it. *00:00* Uh I I'm not a particularly religious person, but it is one of the most moving experiences of my life just watching *00:00* They have grown a human inside of them and brought it into the world. *00:00* the next eighteen to you know, whatever, however many years, together, you and you and Abby, me and Aaron, trying to figure out the best possible way to do right by them, and screwing up left and right. *00:00* He has a show called The New One, which is about him and his wife um having their baby. *00:00* And he shares that in this story, but in this net it's on Netflix and it was on Broadway and stuff. *00:00* You know, I'm getting ready to be a dad. *00:00* and falls in love with because she's gonna do things and be into things that I've never been into or could think about. *00:00* I am not an art person at all, but maybe my kid will be. *00:00* You know, in the grand scheme it's it's fleeting. *00:00* Because with Michaela going to this art thing after school, like it's preschool and and you're exactly right. *00:00* I'm trying to do my darndest to learn. *00:00* because he's interested in it and I want to be involved in his life and I want to be interested in the things that he's interested in. *00:00* But there wasn't that much like he would play with the toys a little bit and that would be that. *00:00* At eight days old, you just want to figure out a way to get more than four friggin' hours of sleep at a time, you know. *00:00* I I would be happy to help. *00:00* And I think we've touched on it maybe a little bit, but just being a a for lack of a better term, a girl dad, like you have a son and a daughter. *00:00* My wife, on the other hand, grew up with two sisters. *00:00* I don't think I have any really useful tidbits or tips. *00:00* He has a boy and a girl, the boy is the elder, and he has said for the longest time, like, his little girl owns him and you know, he's wrapped around her little finger. *00:00* And I know this sounds like I'm just saying it because I'm on a podcast, but really and truly, like I love both my children equally, but in very, very, very different ways. *00:00* First of all, we wanted a kid, so it didn't matter. *00:00* But at least conceptually. *00:00* Both in the sense that you have no choice but to be unselfish when she first pops out, but then, you know, you'll you'll find ways, many, many ways to be less selfish as as time goes on. *00:00* uh d leaving the the last cookie that maybe you would have left for Abby or maybe it or maybe it's the last two cookies. *00:00* And uh and then as big as, well, no, maybe I'm not gonna get a phone this year because the little girl really wants a fancy bicycle or spelling. *00:00* honestly selfishly have an episode before I have a kid as like a pure time capsule of how I feel for the baby to maybe listen to you someday if they care. *00:00* But um I just thought it would be good to have you here as someone, a father of two, uh, to talk through all these feelings I got going on and tech things I have to buy. *00:00* that you wanted to at least ask me to justify a purchase of a brand new phone simply for the camera. *00:00* Uh the deal Abby and I had was uh along the lines of when we have the kid you can get a new phone. *00:00* An absurd amount of pictures. *00:00* D do do you want to share what you Sure. *00:00* And because of that, it seems that all the businesses get all their packages during business hours. *00:00* And so I just rammed that order through as quick as I could, not realizing that it had somehow switched itself to delivery. *00:00* Her upgrade will be next year. *00:00* I'll shoot 4K60, Dolby Vision, HDR. *00:00* a new case. *00:00* They at least hold up for four years in the floor heat and uh humidity. *00:00* I'm happy that this is the year they went they did a megapixel jump for the first time I think in a decade. *00:00* So excited for the range of quality that we're gonna be able to get. *00:00* what is it point five x one two and now uh now two and then three. *00:00* For low light, we're in an apartment, not a lot of great lighting in here. *00:00* I almost actively avoid using the Olympus if I'm not outdoors because the iPhone cameras low light or even not sunlight performance. *00:00* is so much better than the Olympus is that and I and I ended up getting a I think a Mark III body. *00:00* And and when I'm indoors, it's almost useless compared to my iPhone. *00:00* But indoors, it's like not even worth it. *00:00* then of the inside the lower light performance of the iPhone is so much better. *00:00* is for special events like a summer vacation or a big a birthday party or something along those lines. *00:00* I got to keep all of that. *00:00* As far as why that's in place, I'm not sure. *00:00* And so for my setup, I found that the iPhone is almost for for 90% of the years the only camera I ever use. *00:00* completely artificial regulatory legal is thing where they they stop at thirty minutes. *00:00* an external recorder that you you know you you send via HDMI or something like that. *00:00* you know, having these types of tools. *00:00* everywhere. *00:00* So you can plug all that in, but then that's cables and you need like a dummy battery so that the camera doesn't auto-shut off and it's a whole mess to record anything longer. *00:00* you know, someone who likes to take pictures and document things and all that stuff. *00:00* The lens is still gonna be good, you know, for as long as that is. *00:00* This is one of those instances where yes, the best camera you have is the cam or the b the the best camera is the camera you have with you, like you said earlier. *00:00* Yeah, when I was doing some Casey Dad research for this episode, I came across this post, and I will include it in the show notes. *00:00* mood and attitude when I can remind myself, you worked really hard for this. *00:00* You gotta appreciate this, my dude. *00:00* Appreciate the fact that Michaela just spilled apple juice all over the floor and now you gotta clean it up. *00:00* I think having gone through fertility troubles, there's something oddly beautiful about that, especially for someone like me, who I find myself to be inherently extremely selfish. *00:00* Just deal with it and be thankful for the fact that you have a kid that has spilled orange or apple juice or whatever everywhere. *00:00* It she's not gonna be in the house forever. *00:00* try to be thankful for this path that you and I both had to walk, even though we really didn't want to. *00:00* And it's just it's just tough. *00:00* But the best thing you can do is like prepare the way, right? *00:00* is absolutely purpose built to ruin everything. *00:00* for this person. *00:00* I've I've never been more excited to put my things away. *00:00* Fun. *00:00* blessed enough to be given a bunch of stuff. *00:00* Eventually we'll travel simply because my parents live up in Indiana. *00:00* I don't even know how you travel with a baby. *00:00* It is the worst because especially if you're trying to like rent a car. *00:00* We had a suitcase for each of us, I think. *00:00* I feel like I'm forgetting like two or three other bags. *00:00* hated every moment of of the airport on that trip because it was just intolerable to pick all that junk up and carry it from place to place. *00:00* I think we couldn't fit the stroll and we only had we brought like our little teeny tiny stroller if I remember right. *00:00* Very good episode title. *00:00* To a certain degree. *00:00* I feel like we've kind of done we're as ready as we're ever gonna be. *00:00* It could happen any day now, realistically. *00:00* Is there more I can do to like does she have everything she needs? *00:00* You know, as late as possible as an on time. *00:00* everything is oh is this bad is yeah y y at this point I think it's fair to say that barring some true utter catastrophe *00:00* Th you know, she's not sleeping. *00:00* Maybe. *00:00* for a lack of better terms and medical understanding they can sh they can put a balloon help expand things. *00:00* And it just took five five days. *00:00* It's the season for her to be born. *00:00* You know, I have a ATP onesie. *00:00* in in I almost said the upkeep of the baby, which is terrible, but like um but try to be more active in the things that that the mom *00:00* Um you but you guys may choose to just skip breastfeeding entirely or maybe you'll you know do some combination. *00:00* uh bought that for us. *00:00* I think mentally prepared to pivot as needed, but the plan right now is breastfeeding. *00:00* And maybe this, maybe this is me, but I found that a really powerful and important bonding moment for me because even when they're out, yes, I can change diapers, and I changed a lot of diapers, but *00:00* There's not a lot if you're sp particularly if you're breastfeeding, there's not a lot that I can do or that you can do to be directly involved with, again, for lack of a better term, the upkeep of the baby. *00:00* with that sort of a thing for me was really profound and really useful. *00:00* changing of the diapers. *00:00* could do. *00:00* Honestly, if I was still at Disney, we would not be able to afford this apartment and the kids. *00:00* Um my dad worked at his own company while we were kind of um in elementary school and going through middle school and that sort of stuff. *00:00* I c I guess saying that in 2022 isn't really like that big of a shocker. *00:00* You know, my dad's company ended up failing, forcing us to move. *00:00* Be around as much as possible. *00:00* For the first few months of her life, six months, however long it's supposed to be, but it's like we share a room now, like where do I move? *00:00* In the sense that it is a rare that you know, granted with a baby you don't know exactly when, but you know when your life is going to change forever *00:00* The best you can do is prepare the way, and it sounds like you have. *00:00* No matter how much planning you put into it, there will be things that don't go the way you expected. *00:00* never touch your phone or or anything like that, but it does mean give attention, preferably undivided, whenever you can. *00:00* Try to pick up on what Abby needs because she may not be in a place that she can v effectively verbalize it. *00:00* Is maybe sort of kind of training for when you have a kid because especially early on you your job is to do whatever you can to keep the child and the mom *00:00* Tell her or get her help or whatever the case may be. *00:00* then figure out a lactation consultant and and get that squared away and make the appointment or whatever the case may be. *00:00* You know, a little you were saying earlier you guys were planning on breastfeeding, but who knows? *00:00* And so you just gotta roll with it. *00:00* That's a really good idea. *00:00* Because you will be your your world is upside down. *00:00* And you just have to manage it and survive it. *00:00* um when I'm documenting the kids' lives. *00:00* And and these are just milestones that you just gotta get through. *00:00* But you know nothing about what you're about to embark upon. *00:00* And to see like little specks of Aaron in them. *00:00* You know, you talking about that, it reminded me of um my favorite comedian is Mike Burbiglia. *00:00* excited to do all of that and figure it out the the hard stuff, like getting no sleep and the the cool stuff, like seeing specks of Abby in this little baby girl. *00:00* And I'm I'm kind of spoiling like the heartfelt moment at the end of it, but he talks about the m the moment where the three of them *00:00* became one in that sense, like you were talking about, where you're this unit and it's just this magical thing. *00:00* I have tons of stuff that I cannot wait to share. *00:00* But I'm excited to, you know, share different games and movies and and things that I care about. *00:00* I suppose matured and it's not like it's happened in the last few months. *00:00* That's the part I'm really looking forward to, no matter how long that takes. *00:00* You know, that'll eventually go away and I'll be getting my eight hours back or six or six is just really more realistic for me. *00:00* Weird for me lately, good weird, but weird for me lately is that Declan has out of nowhere at the end of last school year got hugely into Pokemon, and I know almost nothing about Pokemon. *00:00* that that he's like had an active interest in. *00:00* I don't I don't view the fact that she's my little girl or my little princess or anything like that. *00:00* doesn't really weigh into me. *00:00* But it it doesn't matter, I don't think, what the what whether it's a boy, a girl, or something else entirely. *00:00* I I I don't I don't want to get into this right now in part because we've been running long, but I still think that Aaron is the most important person in my world. *00:00* Your happiness is is so inextricably linked to whether or not they're happy. *00:00* I don't know how else to verbalize it, but it's like this other human is holding onto your heart. *00:00* It's it's an incredibly powerful thing, and I'm so excited that you get to experience it and *00:00* That's what I'm really stoked about and everyone's like she'll be happy wrapped around her finger and I don't *00:00* It will be a very long show, doc, notes, doc, if I put all of them in, but I kind of like want to I don't know. *00:00* I personally would find it cool, but also I don't know if I'd want to listen to my parents talk about me like that. *00:00* It's all to figure out. *00:00* giving your time and your insight, uh I truly appreciate it. *00:00* Absolutely. *00:00* Well, thank you so much. *00:00* All right, all right, I am I am recording again. *00:00* Yes, yes, indeed. *00:00* And I wanted to try and store pickup because I don't know how your UPS or FedEx or whatever delivery service is, but we we live relatively close to a corporate center. *00:00* Oh crap. *00:00* And so uh I guess I'll be returning it to the Apple store potentially the same day I pick up my other one. *00:00* resolution and quality. *00:00* is going to be way better than, you know, obviously my 10S Max. *00:00* Essentially point and shoot in my pocket at all times now that really s kind of steps it all up. *00:00* art F one point eight zoom lens. *00:00* Um but I'm really excited to start using both of them. *00:00* Having all of these tools in my tool chest is really, really valuable. *00:00* to go in underwater, you know? *00:00* We, she, had finally achieved our her goal. *00:00* such a phenomenal picture and it would have been good. *00:00* I it has to happen, right? *00:00* It's it's weird because I will tell you with an honest heart that that that moment of hearing that heartbeat was yesterday and it was 16 lifetimes ago. *00:00* So we got uh a Brittax car seat and two bases. *00:00* a a way bigger journey than it's ever been before. *00:00* The wedding was all set. *00:00* I can't I don't know. *00:00* And there is a pretty solid chance that that Abby or whomever will end up having some sort of fairly invasive surgery. *00:00* It could we had friend the friends I mentioned earlier with the sterilizer, they were in the hospital for five days just trying to she was induced. *00:00* Com way different circumstance with with triplets and twins. *00:00* of growing the baby, which is to say, you know, we're we're involved in the beginning and then basically just cruise for nine months, whereas the woman is literally growing another person inside of them. *00:00* to feel even more connected with the baby. *00:00* Like I haven't done a lot. *00:00* probably after a few weeks. *00:00* i i is more uniquely equipped to do. *00:00* or survival. *00:00* couldn't buy groceries and we were oblivious to that. *00:00* I'm part of me is concerned about the challenge, but I'm also excited about it in the sense that I get to learn to do something new and really strike *00:00* a balance and tackle it feels weird to say it like a new project. *00:00* the the comparatively easier times when you're no longer in survival mode. *00:00* Stupefying. *00:00* It's such an incredible journey and it's such a just such a a wild new frontier that you get to conquer and you get to do it together, and that's so incredibly powerful. *00:00* He is one of the comedians that is like a storyteller with his jokes. *00:00* Cool that she's into that and wants to do it and and sounded like she's really enjoying it. *00:00* It's still early. *00:00* not at all familiar with. *00:00* Yeah. *00:00* But I obviously have none. *00:00* I I f I feel like both of my kids provide very unique challenges and very unique, I don't know, perks isn't the word I'm looking for, but like *00:00* And y that kid is especially when there's only one of them, that kid owns you. *00:00* At some point I will go back and listen to this and laugh at how ignorant I was, because there's no other way to be. *00:00* I mean at this age, no, not yet. *00:00* figure this out, especially with you know pre and post-declan immediately, but then also pre-Mikayla, where you have the context of Declan as well. *00:00* I think is really neat. *00:00* But yeah, going and spelunking through some of those older posts is quite funny and quite interesting. *00:00* Sweet baby Jesus. *00:00* He's actually been a part of my journey to like becoming a parent, mine and Abby's, uh, throughout this whole process and and we might touch on that later, but *00:00* It's I just I'm the guy in the group with all my friends when we take pictures or a group of anything. *00:00* Fast forward, you know, Declan's going to be eight next month, and which by the way, I don't know how that's possible, but that's neither here nor there. *00:00* Doing work for my dad in the city of Atlanta that required filming a bunch of training. *00:00* w what it's like to be a parent. *00:00* And I John's like, you're you're gonna say you hate this baby. *00:00* Which just really puts you in a total headspace. *00:00* No more. *00:00* The wor not the worst part, but like I wish there was more to do uh to kill the time, because you don't know when it's gonna happen *00:00* Blanket? *00:00* Everything is, oh, is this it? *00:00* It's it's a very delicate and odd balancing act, no matter who you're you are, right? *00:00* But it it i again it's a very profound and useful thing to get you and this baby to really get to know each other and really understand that you are intertwined in in all the good and bad ways. *00:00* have got a new job in May. *00:00* So I'm kind of nervous just about figuring that balance out because at some point, like I have I can't afford to take unpaid time off. *00:00* keep this human alive, pay for supply for this family in the best way that I can, and I'm able to work from home, which isn't *00:00* And so I'm just I'm I guess nervous about learning that balance because I want to be present and help as much as possible. *00:00* stuff was going on. *00:00* One of the things I said about our wedding, obviously Casey, you weren't there, but like I gave a speech at our wedding, and the gist of it was, you know *00:00* But inevitably, like what you want will not happen. *00:00* Take me library take make. *00:00* Neither of you will be capable of effectively and efficiently messaging to the other what you need or want. *00:00* For me anyway, when you get to see little bits of your wife in these little people, that's like the coolest thing in the world. *00:00* But every day I try to be just the teeniest bit better than the last. *00:00* You know, there are two main things I guess I'm excited about, like conceptually, about this child. *00:00* I know what I did to my parents, so I can only imagine what kind of payback I'm gonna get now. *00:00* girl dad stuff, any pointers or anything specifically to like selfishly ask you? *00:00* that there's nothing else to it. *00:00* Even though I love my children very very differently than the way I love her, quite obviously, I love them just as much. *00:00* But you talking about that honestly feels like not a weight lifted. *00:00* Gives me time to collect myself, I suppose. *00:00* At launch time, I swear that they didn't have a good black or no no black offering at all. *00:00* And so I took the baby again as an excuse to buy a nice lens because I've heard um Marquez, MKBHD *00:00* To have I think just the best pictures you can at whatever moment that is, I think is invaluable to me as a *00:00* I, you, people, someone, really uh really learn or or uh have a different perspective on *00:00* You know, I it was um it wasn't long ago. *00:00* And I don't think I've ever been more happy to like put my stuff away. *00:00* uh sterilizer and dryer for bottles. *00:00* Yeah, probably. *00:00* Everything's in place and now we're just waiting. *00:00* You know, I before we got married, I was living with a buddy, and I was, I want to say I was out of work at the time. *00:00* Let's get the bags. *00:00* And I know how I feel now, and I don't even know what she looks like, you know? *00:00* It's it's so cliched. *00:00* I just can't wait, but I'm also like wigging out a little bit. *00:00* I've never changed a diaper. *00:00* A week and then But I'll keep them. *00:00* was like super important. *00:00* after you're no longer in survival mode. *00:00* watching my wife create t birth and bring this project of ours. *00:00* But I'm trying and I'm trying to do what I can to be involved with it. *00:00* Seeing seeing them play with friends and navigate what that is and the give and take of playing with a friend, especially for us because we were pretty aggressively locked down during COVID and they didn't get those opportunities for the last couple of years. *00:00* Sign up for that as well or go to an uh related. *00:00* Yeah, because once she shows up, I feel like that tightens up real quick. *00:00* an Android Devout um for years and he's he's been on the Samsung train for a while now. *00:00* Except when you really need a good one. *00:00* I just know it's like you said. *00:00* She is a gift and I just wanna be able to soak it up as much as possible because *00:00* It seem uh it is incredibly painful from what I understand and have seen. *00:00* This baby, she is going to change our lives for the rest of our lives. *00:00* Once the baby can do like a four-hour stretch, like I kid you not, I have had I think the best sleeps I've ever had were the first sleeps where the baby went more than like two or three hours. *00:00* But once you get to the point that you're starting to understand, you're starting to get a rhythm, and all three of you are starting to form a joint-together rhythm. *00:00* To see that happen. *00:00* They it it's kind of like your heart isn't in your body anymore. *00:00* It in so in some ways you only get to be happy when they're happy. *00:00* Oh 1. *00:00* Being able to help in any way is kind of one of my concerns is probably the right word. *00:00* Good to know that before it happens, you I weirdly, you know, I don't know. *00:00* And I think to watch that happen is gonna be the coolest, most wonderful thing outside of Mary Nabby. figure out a way to make them happy again. *00:00* This may be strange and strongly worded, but it feels dangerous to a certain degree of like doing anything for one little person feels a bit like we have to draw a line and like teach them some stuff. *00:00* We don't for analog actually, but I we need a shtick and we haven't come up with a shtick yet. *00:00* They announced a Disney Santa Clauses. *00:00* You know, I'm gonna make do. *00:00* And I'm speaking a bit selfishly here and myopically, but children that that that you need help to conceive are miracles in a slightly different way. *00:00* Lost my train of thought. *00:00* We what else have we bought? *00:00* Could be. *00:00* I think maybe part of the reason that that most men I know, and I'm this way, are predisposed to try to fix it. *00:00* Copy. *00:00* But then when I went back to send it through again, at this point I'm like thinking, oh my gosh, I'm not gonna get my phone on launch day, which, you know, is kind of a problem because I need to talk about it. *00:00* I went with a terabyte, Casey. *00:00* People like I'll make jokes about it because I think that's just part of who I am, but you know, oh my stuff's in the closet, like I you know, I can't *00:00* Like I geeked out about our stroller. *00:00* If you if you ever need any Pokemon tips or pointers, I'm always available. *00:00* And not have to worry also sounds wrong because I am going to worry. *00:00* I will love her, obviously, like with all my heart. *00:00* Ba da Ba da Greatest acceptance ever. *00:00* You kinda got a sing song to of my friends and family are like, oh my gosh, dude, stop. *00:01* It was such an incredible pain. *00:01* After this apartment, we will not be on the third floor without an elevator. *00:01* Like I felt like I was doing more than just changing poopy diapers, which is fine and helpful. *00:01* No. *00:01* So well that's fine, but not desirable. *00:01* And it's it's not fun in the sense that we are in a s in a small space for three people in the amount of junk that I have that my wife graciously lets me keep. *00:01* Um Yay, feels good. *00:01* It's such an incredible experience. *00:01* It doesn't sound too great. *00:01* You know, one of the things that Erin and I did with Declan was for the first couple of nights, you know, I was I said to her *00:01* So I gotta get a little bit of that in here. *00:01* You know, it's it's not a lot, but it and it's it's indoors and the light is probably, you know, the coloring is probably wrong if you're a professional photographer or whatever. *00:01* And so the best thing you can do is survive. *00:01* And that's cool. *00:01* But I definitely wanted to have this, like I said at the top of the show, selfishly for me. *00:01* You can also *00:01* Which is a Canon 90 D. *00:01* Yeah. *00:01* Maybe I should make her clean it up. *00:01* And I'm, you know, my brain is like, how's this whole baby thing working from home gonna work? *00:01* Um but the thing is, what do you what do you do with that in knowledge, right? *00:01* And that may be aggressive wording or it's not the same. *00:01* Um, you know, and whenever you go back to them, I think you'll enjoy this little period you know those periods of your life. *00:01* This has been an adventure. *00:01* So it this was for me. *00:01* The case in the charger. *00:01* Exactly right. *00:01* Okay. *00:01* I was just waiting to get married and I I couldn't keep still. *00:01* You never knew you could like you can write it all out and it conceptually makes sense. *00:01* This is definitely the season for her to pop out. *00:01* Um you know, I was listening to the recent episode of Analog today actually, and you talked about Michaela doing this our after school art class thing. *00:01* But ask me again when Barbie's become a thing, right? *00:01* I think you mentioned what you were buying on ATP, but if not, I don't want to spoil that for that audience, but um *00:01* I was a devout Apple leather case person, uh, and then for the 13 Pro *00:01* Yeah. *00:01* But I just saved that uh because I like the idea of you don't want some app that's going through the internet like you you need to know what's going on immediately. *00:01* Um Yes, that's that you're right. *00:01* Now other lactation consultants might tell you that that's dead wrong, and I'm not here to pass judgment one way or the other. *00:01* And so the rhythm we fell into the to the best of my recollection was, you know, Aaron would feed *00:01* Like she's not even five years old yet. *00:01* Like I've definitely tailored back game purchases. *00:01* fm slash analog spelt uh the correct way or the British way. *00:01* And Casey just sent a name title. *00:02* Um I don't know, but that was the I decided to go all out with it. *00:02* So you better appreciate this. *00:02* I forget they they had a time that you're supposed to do, but basically it would cause all the water in that bag to boil, and then they would, you know, steam clean all the bottle stuff. *00:02* I'm gonna try to keep this brief. *00:02* I'm like weirdly excited about that. *00:02* They wanted Abby to to have that. *00:02* So I was like, good excuse to watch Mike Brabiglia. *00:02* And I know it takes time. *00:02* Like, I don't really think of her and I'm not trying to be like all woke about, well, she's it doesn't matter if she's a girl or not. *00:02* com. *00:02* Oh, thank you for coming back. *00:02* I was like, think of all the different focal links I can take pictures of my child, 4K 60 Dolby Vision, which I think was last year. *00:02* Like the they'll be crying, it's the middle of the night. *00:02* And I mean it wasn't quite that it wasn't quite that easy, but nevertheless, as compared to Aaron's day of laboring for each child. *00:02* Hopefully it'll only be a week or two, but realistically after a few weeks. *00:02* You've you've got stuff to do, but the kids are there. *00:02* But I didn't know when we saw each other at Kmart or she would say when we watched The Walking Dead together, that would completely change our lives. *00:02* Yep. *00:02* But they also share all of that knowledge uh just to help kids. *00:02* She's visiting the the restroom every four minutes. *00:02* Um, I mean I've set things up and built things and done that side of stuff, but I'm excited to actually contribute to the care of the human. *00:02* Um and I don't having being around is important to me and so I want to be involved as much as possible. *00:02* It's cool. *00:02* I don't post that terribly often anymore, maybe once a month. *00:02* Like we're just taking pictures. *00:02* You can plug it into like one of those USB camera things that everyone was buying at the beginning of the pandemic so that their video calls were not abusable. *00:02* But I've had that for a couple years and I've taken pictures. *00:02* But if I can use the big camera, I feel like I'm gonna want to, but it is big and cumbersome. *00:02* I'll remind myself, like, you worked for this, dude. *00:02* I guess that's many, many words to say. *00:02* Um I there was one thing I wanted to ask you specifically, I think, before we wrap up is *00:02* Like nothing else matters. *00:02* And uh so I'm back to black like a boring old man. *00:02* I mean, and again, it's it's micro four thirds camera, the body was like somewhere around five hundred bucks, which is not cheap by any stretch of the imagination, but it's not like *00:02* Now you may use the your use pattern may be very different than you expect, but you will not regret it. *00:02* And I I I wrote a post on my website a long time ago, shortly after Declan was born, that I think the best picture I will ever take in my life *00:02* And those are the fun toys. *00:02* So she kind of gave us all this stuff. *00:02* If you're gonna be awake I should be awake too. *00:02* Um it's a smaller company and uh basically it's just PTO. *00:02* And so when I was working at Disney, the policy was three months paid paternity leave at Disney. *00:02* I look back incredibly fondly on that. *00:02* Yeah, but totally, totally. *00:02* Season four is going on right now, which is the fast and the furious. *00:02* Jude and put to research childhood cancer and help kids survive this disease and not have their parents pay *00:02* When I was ordering this past Friday as we record, uh, I was trying to do in-store pickup, which I've never, or I think I did when it when it was the only way to get them. *00:02* I mean you could tell it was the physics says, you know, when you have enough space to have proper glass on there and and you know make use of it, it's gonna make for a good picture. *00:02* Even though you would think it's just pictures and newspapers, but I apply it everywhere. *00:02* And so I'm not saying you have to buy a GoPro or anything like that. *00:02* And every single one of them says, you know, blink and you'll miss it. *00:02* Um we ended up sticking with the Britacks. *00:02* Yeah, so it's I'm like, nah, she's gonna be in there the whole time. *00:02* I actually also wonderful. *00:02* And neither of those things are going to be terribly easy. *00:02* I'm is there girl specific stuff I should be prepared for? *00:02* Who knows? *00:02* Okay. *00:02* A series? *00:02* I like it. *00:02* That sounds about right. *00:02* But I uh I've moved a lot, Casey. *00:02* Uh it is. *00:02* Uh, took some friends to the airport and I was like, please tell me how traveling with all this baby stuff goes so I can work for it next time, you know, whenever I have to go. *00:02* I'll tell you what, the picture quality on it is like not fantastic at all. *00:02* I was actually talking to um some friends of ours over the summer, and I don't know why this didn't occur to me for a long time. *00:02* But uh if you go to Saintju. *00:02* I fell in love with photography and photojournalism and in college. *00:02* And I'm talking to myself here. *00:02* How do I make sure that it's pooping enough and peeing enough? *00:02* And once you and Abby and your you know your team, you know, your consultant or whomever decides that it's appropriate to do so, and maybe that'll be day one, maybe it'll be day thirty, but *00:02* Oh my word. *00:02* But it is a good I hear they sell carrying cases for these things, or so so I've been told *00:02* Oh my gosh. *00:02* It's it's extremely cool. *00:02* And again, I feel like I sound like I'm I'm trying to be on on a soapbox or something. *00:02* You know what I mean? *00:02* And that's I'm not trying to say our my perspective is better or worse than anyone else's. *00:02* You know, the same thing happened with her, but you know, there's only one kid that makes you a parent, right? *00:02* And that was helpful because that meant uh uh I'm well that's probably overselling my involvement, but you get my point. *00:02* You might want podcast in the nursery while, you know, while Abby and the baby are sleeping in the master bedroom. *00:02* And and to see yourself in another human, if you're like me, sometimes that's a little frustrating and scary, but generally speaking, that's incredible and and so powerful and so amazing. *00:02* Well, I mean they're both spitting images of Aaron physically, but like personality-wise, you know, to to to see little specks of Aaron in them is just like the coolest thing in the world. *00:02* Like, there's not a lot about Pokemon that really appeals to me because I'm old and boring. *00:02* I don't want to deal with this. *00:02* Yeah, I have no idea. *00:02* So we bought one of those I'm looking around. *00:02* I'm your host, Max Roberts, and joining me this time, returning to the show, *00:02* I'm so sorry. *00:02* So I haven't really used my phone to do anything fun in a long time, picture-wise. *00:02* And I know it's weird to say that, you know, 18 years ago, but it's like it's not I only have so much time, and it I'm running out of time already, and she's not even here yet. *00:02* And and the best you can do, and I'm stealing from your show notes here, and I'm I'm jumping around on you a bit, which makes me a terrible uh guest, and I apologize for that. *00:02* Um Abby has a friend who had a baby kind of in tw not kinda had a baby in 2020, but she uh had *00:02* It was ridiculous. *00:02* It's like she's never been more beautiful. *00:02* And this is true both of them, um, is try is trying to do what I can to be more active *00:02* And so basically what that boils down to as far as once the baby's born is she basically goes on short-term disability. *00:02* And it is incredible. *00:02* The that the struggle part of it, I think, at least physically. *00:02* Some people would say that may make me a bad dad. *00:02* Quite possibly. *00:02* And and outdoors, the iPhone is very good. *00:03* I I wish I didn't. *00:03* Like, you know, but for me anyway, if Aaron, maybe it's just because I'm a hypochondriac, but you know, Aaron would cough twice and I'd be like, oh, that's it. *00:03* So she kind of gets the end of the year off um from work to take care of a human, which is a full time job. *00:03* So thanks, Casey. *00:03* We went Oh yeah. *00:03* Like if it were up to us, would the human race would die out? *00:03* If you're having trouble breastfeeding because you're normal and everyone freaking has trouble breastfeeding, but nobody ever tells you that. *00:03* But Erin is very good about taking video and I wish in retrospect for both kids *00:03* The two of you made that together. *00:03* And I think throwing a few bucks that way would be fantastic if you could do so. *00:03* Yeah, we have uh Aaron's uh pink what's it silicone? *00:03* The days are long and the years are short. *00:03* But we did a couple of trips when Declan was super young, including to Florida actually once. *00:03* But that was the gist. *00:03* And so you gotta be present, you gotta be aware, and try to be aware of the things that either the baby or or more s most especially Abby needs, potentially before she can put that together. *00:03* And I know you recognize that. *00:03* I I told you before the show I'd be stupid to not talk about the iPhone event at least a little bit. *00:03* Right, right, right, right. *00:03* Well, it's it's just it's so much, right? *00:03* I think we flew into Fort Lauderdale. *00:03* Like, that's a long time. *00:03* I'm excited about it. *00:03* And and like you had said a couple of times earlier, you conceptually know what it's like to be on little sleep. *00:03* It's not necessarily a bad thing at all. *00:03* Tim Allen? *00:03* Exact exactly. *00:03* Oh, you got spendy. *00:03* Like this will take up space. *00:03* And that that is an excuse to spend a pile of money, which I'm very lucky that I've been able to do over the last eight years, you know, since Declan was born. *00:03* Um it was perfect timing because we were already talked about this episode in particular. *00:03* Those are dad's toys. *00:03* I it's gonna be a whole thing. *00:03* We bought a monitor. *00:03* Um, I keep saying that she's gonna be a full cook. *00:03* Uh good speech, Max. *00:03* And and w I think y it sounds like your friends and family have done that. *00:03* 45 in the morning. *00:03* I and I am a Max person, so um not because of my name, but but my uncle does say that I should buy it because it has my name in it. *00:03* I know they like sealed off the bottom, which uh is to the chagrin of John. *00:03* And and some of that is tech. *00:03* You get through it. *00:03* She's not gonna pop out and be like, yo, I like this stuff. *00:03* They just absolutely own you. *00:03* And I don't know. *00:03* If you have even but a dollar to send their way, it would be much appreciated. *00:03* Can you hear me? *00:03* Uh but before we talk about all of that, I wanted to take a moment and let all of you know listening that September is childhood cancer awareness month and the fine folks over at Relay FM *00:03* That sounds like something a company or a government would regulate and kind of ruin it for everyone else. *00:03* Even the crappy times, you better appreciate this because you worked for it, your wife worked for it, and not everyone gets it. *00:03* Yes, yes, indeed. *00:03* Uh I I don't know anything, you know, one way or the other about the automated sterilizers, but *00:03* So yeah, I there's so many different factors now. *00:03* And maybe I'm just drawing a total blank, but *00:03* Like, I mean, her body is not hers. *00:03* There's a whole thing there. *00:03* You are not sleeping. *00:03* Watching your wife give birth. *00:03* This is over years of, you know, someday I'll have a kid and we'll share this. *00:03* Their dog was a girl. *00:03* This is gonna be a nightmare for you to edit. *00:03* And and this is one of those cases where I was really happy I had the good one. *00:03* Uh well, Casey, a lot. *00:03* Not we're on the third floor. *00:03* And that'd be awesome because I'm really bad at it. *00:03* Of course, of course. *00:03* And so we would never get our deliveries until five, six, seven o'clock at night. *00:03* And it was taken with the micro four thirds camera. *00:03* Like, you gotta appreciate this, my dude, because this wasn't the sort of thing where you just coughed the next thing you knew she was pregnant. *00:03* And, you know, we've we've spoken to so many people who are, you know, older parents in the sense that their children are much older. *00:03* We didn't have an automated sterilizer. *00:03* You know what I mean? *00:03* So a as a direct example. *00:03* So those four days are gonna be eaten up at the hospital. *00:03* So, you know, her art is very rudimentary and fundamental. *00:03* I'm I'm already overselling it, but uh we have surprises. *00:03* But I was ordering my phone and I went to do in-store pickup and when I went to Apple Pay, it just did like the whole exclamation point in a circle thing with no actionable information about it whatsoever. *00:03* And basically you just hit me right in the right spot there with uh with this post called Euphoria. *00:03* Like it w it will happen. *00:03* It absolutely is. *00:03* You're right. *00:03* And I'm not I'm not here to complain about like, uh woe is me, I have to pay for this and that and all this stuff. *00:03* If we got a choose, we wanted a girl. *00:03* Well, oh no. *00:03* Look at this guy. *00:03* Um I I I think there's there's a lot of different avenues that that we can go down, but uh I know when we were talking before the show *00:03* And I actually was chatting with Apple this morning. *00:03* Uh I'm looking forward to that again. *00:03* Antsy is probably the better word for it. *00:03* So the plan is breastfeeding. *00:03* So if you introduce the bottle early, they're gonna be like, well the heck with this, you know, breast. *00:03* Um you can try to have conversations with Abby and with friends and family to establish what you want to happen. *00:03* But this is like an all-encompassing like obsession for him right now. *00:03* But you definitely should at least go listen to those two shows. *00:03* So I did just kind of preliminary research, just kind of dug in and was like camera over a video camera seems to make more sense here. *00:03* And and no no no no no. *00:03* Yeah, it it's it's it's a m mind screw. *00:03* Like that is a baby's purpose in life is to ruin everything. *00:03* I'm not running. *00:03* But when a woman ends up pregnant, like she has and I mean the husband doesn't either, but she has no idea how this pregnancy is going to go, and particularly the delivery is going to go. *00:03* You know, maybe that won't work out. *00:03* And, you know, if you have extra money after giving to St. *00:03* So I feel overall confident in the longevity of it, as it were. *00:04* It changed my perspective on things quite a lot. *00:04* I wish you didn't. *00:04* So that was maybe maybe it was just one shared suitcase for Aaron and me and a suitcase for Declan. *00:04* Sometimes I'm like, do we drive? *00:04* That's all I'm saying. *00:04* I also convinced her to let me buy a relay onesie, so like she'll fit in those for like *00:04* Yes, it's ridiculous, Casey. *00:04* And in survival mode, it's it's so hard because for me anyway, and for Aaron, it was mostly about sleep. *00:04* And particularly with Declan, I think more it she was quicker to punt *00:04* fm slash analog and sign up. *00:04* These lenses on the iPhone seem incredibly practical to me as, you know, the ha *00:04* So those types of things we've gotten there's been some other fun *00:04* Um, but it's totally possible. *00:04* I have an M one IMAX, so it's like you know, as thick as a pencil. *00:04* Um I got two fifty six or excuse me, I got five twelve, she got two fifty-six. *00:04* And having a GoPro that I had originally bought for my brief, you know, foray into being a car journalist *00:04* Might have even been been great with an iPhone, but *00:04* And what you would do is just a dribble of water, I don't remember how much, but you'd put a dribble of water in this bag, you would put the bottle pieces in that you would seal it *00:04* I felt like a friggin' pack animal trying to drag all this through the airport. *00:04* And it's also doubly tough because, you know, if Abby is anything like Aaron was at this point. *00:04* com. *00:04* Like I know plenty of people like the the the friend of mine that said, you know, the the the days are long, the years are sh are short. *00:04* What would you like to share with the listeners, Casey? *00:04* Do I sound normal? *00:04* We are we are here not to necessarily talk about *00:04* So I then did the order for Aaron's phone *00:04* Yeah, that's saying something. *00:04* So I just think the quality of what I'm gonna be able to pull out of it *00:04* We just had a friend they had a baby like a month ago and we weren't sure if we were gonna buy one of those. *00:04* Are we really ready for this? *00:04* And so everything becomes an earth-shattering, world-ending issue. *00:04* Yeah. *00:04* So I'm excited. *00:04* So like I'm at the place I need to be right now. *00:04* I'm not trying to like scold you. *00:04* You know? *00:04* So please, please, if you're willing, saintjud. *00:04* ATP and sing song. *00:04* And I was thinking about this today. *00:04* Oh yeah. *00:04* So just by de facto they're coming down when she's born, but eventually we want to go there, obviously. *00:04* She'll be decked out in the Red Bull. *00:04* But one of the things that we had done was, you know, Aaron would pump *00:04* And I think she appreciated that at first, but you can already tell the f *00:04* Like it was hard. *00:04* Like our parents protected us from all the stuff that was going on incredibly well. *00:04* He's he's so good at it. *00:04* And that went through no problem, so now I have three phones headed for me instead of two. *00:04* That is defin that's one of my fears. *00:04* So it's highly situational and I'm I'm part of me is like a little worried about it in the sense that I bought the phone and the k the nice lens and I'm gonna use this, but *00:04* Yeah, I I don't blame you at all. *00:04* I know how hard we worked for it. *00:04* That's dad preparing the way. *00:04* If you're trying to rent a car, then you have to bring a car seat because *00:04* I got through it. *00:04* No, I totally hear that. *00:04* And to dress her up, my cousin just bought me um a *00:04* Keeping a person alive is not really a project. *00:04* I heard somebody say, I don't remember if this is a famous person or not, but I heard somebody say that that when you have a child *00:04* This is some ATV D Plore. *00:04* If she has a C section, it's two days. *00:04* Um well I guess Declan's at school. *00:04* But it's it's new territory for us. *00:04* I I I don't think I'm verbalizing it well, but it's just *00:04* org slash relay, just donate anything. *00:04* So I'm stoked when they said forty-eight megapixel camera *00:04* So um one of the *00:04* I don't know. *00:04* Outside, if I'm going for a broader, wider shot, the HDR performance is better. *00:04* The room is set, the bags are packed, like as well as they can be for five weeks out. *00:04* And that means whenever either one of you can sleep, you better frickin' sleep. *00:04* I know it was difficult. *00:04* And coming into becoming a parent, I'm feeling a somewhat similar train of thought. *00:04* And I can't wait for that moment, the first time, and for the rest of my life. *00:04* And when they're upset or if they're mad at you, it's like they're they just crushed it and there's nothing you can do. *00:04* And then I will do one quick final shout out for saintjude. *00:04* Oh yes. *00:04* He takes pictures of the moon with it and stuff. *00:04* But the other thing that I learned from photojournalism was the best camera is the camera you have on you. *00:04* I don't know. *00:04* I've I've lived in a bunch of different states, houses all over the place. *00:04* That's definitely fun. *00:04* Well this is this is the way. *00:04* She is such an incredible little girl, Aaron, I forget which one of us it is, at the airport. *00:04* Um I mean ultimately the the the best baby is a fed baby and that's all that matters. *00:04* And so having having the ability to help *00:04* And I don't mean that to be negative, far from it. *00:04* And most of them need her require her to be older. *00:04* Maybe that maybe it does. *00:04* So I mean we'll see. *00:04* Time to scroll Twitter. *00:04* Uh that's right. *00:04* Well, I appreciate it. *00:04* Appreciate that because you might not have had this and there are many people that don't get it that don't get that. *00:04* But nevertheless, you know, the the only thing we can do is try to make the best of it, right? *00:04* And so the generic things of, you know, there's a curtain and a changing mat and a crib and I'm I'm looking around the office as I do this, you know. *00:04* Abby grow and everything just happen. *00:04* You know? *00:04* No, I'm with you. *00:04* Here you go. *00:04* Oh my gosh. *00:04* We'll see how it goes. *00:05* And I remember vividly being in that up in that office, hearing his heartbeat for the first time and just bawling. *00:05* And that's part of parenting. *00:05* It's to hear and see the baby and then get into the room as fast as possible. *00:05* And so uh it it becomes very difficult because everything becomes a trigger. *00:05* And I don't mean that in a bad way, it's just that's kind of what it is. *00:05* And so that, you know, has all sorts of of issues associated with it as well. *00:05* It's a great show. *00:05* But right now I don't feel like that really is gonna be the case. *00:05* My apologies. *00:05* And then once all that's squared away, then UPS will come and deliver to us, you know, y little *00:05* So I decided to invest in um a Sigma 18 to 35 *00:05* That's what I've been like documenting Abby's baby bump with and take pictures around when we go out and things like that. *00:05* I I was I I realized I became a dad when I geeked out about our stroller. *00:05* I'm interested to see how that goes. *00:05* Um barring any dramatic downturn in the quality of the car. *00:05* Like what what how is that actionable? *00:05* Like, that makes your heart happy because they're happy. *00:05* And I know it sounds silly because I just bought a like $1,600 phone and a very expensive camera lens. *00:05* And I went with this other one by Nudiant, which was okay, but it's already pretty well destroyed after a year. *00:05* Yep. *00:05* And outdoors, it still shines and pardon the pun. *00:05* It's just having these tools in your arsenal is extremely useful. *00:05* And that's how I do it. *00:05* And I mean my bookshelf's still there, so I guess it's a little nerdy to that sense, but like I cleared off room for her books. *00:05* And I forget what it was, but because of the size of the trunk *00:05* We didn't bring the stroller that the like car seat clicks into. *00:05* You're exactly right. *00:05* Again, I don't care what the mechanism is, it is incredible to know that for nine months *00:05* It will. *00:05* And that lasts for like the first four years of their life. *00:05* I'm antsy for her to show up, but I want her to show up as a *00:05* She'll only fit in the onesie for like a few months probably, if any if anyone what people have told me they grow rapidly and clothes don't even fit. *00:05* And you may find it not necessary at all, but *00:05* You are at best like coworkers for a while because you've got this project in front of you. *00:05* Um but I got myself on a tangent. *00:05* You sound great. *00:05* Yes, it does. *00:05* But just I'm stoked to just have a really solid *00:05* Stop. *00:05* There's all sorts of scenarios. *00:05* And when you're dealing with a fussy baby *00:05* Some of that is what things can I buy? *00:05* But that's 18 hours in a car with a baby, which sounds pretty miserable too. *00:05* There is no elevator. *00:05* Possibly impossible. *00:05* Yeah, I'm excited just to have a girl and that and just have a human around that we made, that she made. *00:05* Really, that's what this is and it's how I wanted it to go. *00:05* I was like, hey, I'd like to cancel this. *00:05* I don't know. *00:05* Now granted hypothetically I could do that with my phone too, but like the GoPro is purpose built. *00:05* Exactly. *00:05* And I feel like when I just sit back and think *00:05* And it's it's so much to deal with all at the same time. *00:05* You will get through it. *00:05* She's not comfortable. *00:05* All I know is what she sounds like and like where she kicks. *00:05* I don't care which way it happens. *00:05* I don't know if you're familiar with him, Casey. *00:05* And and I love that about both of them. *00:05* I I a lot of cheddar. *00:05* Now maybe I'm wrong about that, or maybe I was looking for blue, maybe that was the issue. *00:05* So I always love when he gets new phones because I get to see kind of what's going on outside of MKBHD videos. *00:05* Um and and so I'm the one with the nice camera and and typically I'm the one taking the pictures. *00:05* And here it was, she finally is without question a mom *00:05* Because let me tell you, never in your life *00:05* And I feel like that's *00:05* I I know I I think you are fully aware. *00:05* Um, and you know what? *00:05* You can go to Saintju. *00:05* He's on the fly, he's fast. *00:05* That is absolutely saying something. *00:05* So Yeah, it's funny. *00:05* I I may have this dead wrong, but they had to like classify themselves as video cameras if they could record more than thirty minutes at a time or thirty or more minutes at a time. *00:05* Appreciate it. *00:05* That they didn't use because they didn't go anywhere. *00:05* Um so we we had the car seat in a bag, we had a stroller, we had a diaper bag, we had a breast pump. *00:05* Is the do we have all the clothes? *00:05* Like I it it's painful. *00:05* It doesn't have to be just feeding, but whatever you can do to be involved with more than just *00:05* And that seems obvious uh you know, when I say that out loud. *00:05* Most people can work from home now. *00:05* Like figured it out not terribly long afterward. *00:05* I guess it's not only being present, but being aware because *00:05* But that's that's right. *00:05* My my Apple leather case on the Tennis Max I think has aged fairly well. *00:05* Yes, and so I've been playing around with that and loving it. *00:05* I I just like the stroller more. *00:05* Um what we ended up doing, and I I'm not trying to say this is better or worse than an automated thing, but *00:05* We got a humidifier. *00:05* And yeah, this is the very tough part. *00:05* It really hasn't been hers for several months, but really not hers now. *00:05* I've never been more in love with her. *00:05* But you'll find your own rhythm. *00:05* You're now able to sit back and enjoy. *00:05* And I say that as someone who's very close with my parents. *00:05* And it's so incredibly powerful. *00:05* Uh, yep, yep. *00:05* That's not a rule, it's just kind of what's ended up happening. *00:05* You gotta put the lens on and you know, by the time all that's done, maybe she's done *00:05* You know, that that she made a mistake. *00:05* She's coming out in October. *00:05* So I'm excited to share that with her. *00:05* Um because there's gonna be so much going on that I just have never done before. *00:05* Like there's not yeah it it no matter how terrible they are as an infant, and some of them be real bad, that kid just owns you. *00:05* And when they're when it's an infant, that's kind of true because then they're screaming or crying. *00:05* You probably know better than me. *00:05* Like it's it's utterly bananas. *00:05* And just make room *00:05* Um Erin breastfed Declan. *00:05* Um, as an adult, I understand what they were going through as adults. *00:05* So as a silly example, I tend to lean toward a photograph or reach for a photograph, so to speak. *00:05* And I'm I can't wait to see that type of thing happen. *00:05* Uh I appreciate it. *00:05* Oh no. *00:05* It certainly will. *00:05* And I'm going to tie it back here in a minute. *00:05* But you have to have the presence of mind, you have to have the thing next to you. *00:05* But nevertheless, you don't think about that when like *00:05* Yeah. *00:05* Like, you know, uh you and Abby will find your own rhythm. *00:05* Like his his shows have a whole theme and vibe, but he pieces bits together. *00:05* So the the challenges are always different, but there are always challenges of some sort. *00:05* I'm with you. *00:05* It's not. *00:05* But I like the leather cases a lot. *00:06* It's it's very kind of you. *00:06* We'll have this great bonding experience *00:06* You know, it's funny you say, you know, you're kinda just along for the ride right now because you're you're right, you know *00:06* But we also understand that that worked even harder. *00:06* And I'm just excited to see it all happen and be there to help out as best I can because I feel *00:06* So Aaron did the thing that Aaron is uniquely and and only Aaron is qualified to do, at least you know, with Declan and early on with Michaela. *00:06* Oh yes. *00:06* That's a good point. *00:06* And you two did that together. *00:06* But I I invited Casey back uh because I'm having a kid. *00:06* Um, but when I talked to Abby about it, my my thought process was is she's only this big once. *00:06* And yeah, I think I think you'll definitely get get great use out of the phone and and I think you're right about the lens. *00:06* Um, her family keeps thinking that she's gonna be born any day now, but that's because pretty much everyone in her family is born in September. *00:06* And then, you know, there's other things that they could do. *00:06* None of this is wrong as her plan is to breastfeed. *00:06* I highly recommend it. *00:06* And then season five is going to be Resident Evil, and that's spring 2023. *00:06* So I j I'm excited to have a versatile like range of lenses that seems practical, especially *00:06* I do have a big camera. *00:06* We currently live in a two-bedroom apartment. *00:06* Because there's no way I'd sign up for that. *00:06* Not even necessarily worse. *00:06* And I and I still have problems with that and I try to do better with it. *00:06* And this is the first thing *00:06* Well and you'll find that quickly that she will ruin all of that and br and and beat it right out of you. *00:06* I think unless you have like *00:06* That's normal. *00:06* I think it's good to have the plan. *00:06* You conceptually understand that. *00:06* But as I've *00:06* And if someone in my life could be good at it, that'd be dope. *00:06* So we're happy that that, you know, that's what we've ended up with. *00:06* So yeah, exactly. *00:06* I'm not gonna sing it right now, but you could sing, which is what I do in my head every time I have to search for Casey or John or Marco. *00:06* And I can't think of really anything better. *00:06* So I did go for a terabyte. *00:06* If I'm doing like a portrait or something like that, I'm going for the Olympus every time. *00:06* And it was taken *00:06* Like it was just a mess. *00:06* Um especially like *00:06* I'm trying to do it. *00:06* And there's a negative interpretation of that. *00:06* So surprises are exciting. *00:06* net. *00:06* That's ne neither here nor there. *00:06* So this was you know just three or four years ago now that I got a new body for it. *00:06* And every other time I'm I'm just grabbing the iPhone. *00:06* Oh no. *00:06* Yeah, Aaron was in was in active well, I don't know. *00:06* I'm just telling you what we were told. megapixels still, but I'm just *00:06* And a lot of times when I'm really frustrated with one of them, I will remind myself *00:06* And and you never you don't know what what it will be and you don't know *00:06* Like who knows? *00:06* Well that's that's gonna be less fun. *00:06* Like I *00:06* Like, it's your kid, man. *00:06* You know, you're leaving one for one for Abby and one for her. *00:06* You know what? *00:06* And in fact, actually now that I say that *00:06* Yes, there was some reason for this. *00:06* That was I still say photojournalism photojournalism was the most useful class I ever took in college because it's skills that I apply *00:06* And when Aaron had the kids, like I had the micro four thirds camera in the hospital. *00:06* Appreciate the fact that you're getting pissed off about about some stupid thing Declan just did. *00:06* Conceptually, that's absolutely how I feel, at least going into it. *00:06* But a lot of it is is just preparing the way in general. *00:06* But oh my word, is it an adventure? *00:06* And I'm incredibly fortunate to be able to *00:06* It's a life. *00:06* So I'm like *00:06* And I think there's a lot of truth to that. had our first kid, Declan, it was you know late twenty fourteen and at the *00:07* I was *00:07* Um and I have I don't think I'll be able to dig it up quickly enough. *00:07* You know, we he didn't have a seat on the plane, he just sat on our laps. *00:07* And *00:07* Sure. *00:07* And *00:07* I would think it *00:07* And I this is the first one that I think he's really brought to us that we were *00:07* I wish I had a better answer for you than that one. *00:07* Is is there any new difference with girl being a girl dad? *00:07* Exactly. *00:07* I don't know. *00:07* I I bought an iPhone gonna take a lot of time, right? *00:07* A lot better than mine was at, you know, four and a half years old, but still it's rudimentary. *00:07* And the fact that Michaela's a little girl *00:07* But
