That was a lot of fun.
*00:00*
Hello everybody and welcome to the Max Frequency Podcast.
*00:00*
By the end of this course you'll ha you will know the complete statistics of each character, share uh
*00:00*
Yeah, I saw that you guys were doing chapters like that's very cool.
*00:00*
And like we were talking about, all that Resident Evil stuff, Chapter Select season five going on right now, Resident Evil.
*00:00*
Let me uh it was then July 14th, 2019, that I put together my pitch for the podcast that would go on to become RPG University.
*00:00*
That's a mom's house.
*00:00*
I'd never OG two or remake two?
*00:00*
Hey Max, not too bad yourself.
*00:00*
It was fitting at the time.
*00:00*
uh where I teach people and stuff.
*00:00*
If you're here for another course, you are in the wrong place, and we'll be going over the introductory information and data pertaining to statistics, history, vocabulary, and geography of the Squaresoft Classic Final Fantasy VII.
*00:00*
You'll be able to recite the history of the game's production and then go into the important figures and names that will be important to know when playing the game.
*00:00*
Your vocabulary will be expanded significantly, as I give definitions to important terms that are used throughout the game that you should be aware of, and finally, the in the discussion on geography, I shall pull up a war world map and label all of the main cities and caves.
*00:00*
If you showed me two screens back to back between God of War 2018 and Ragnarok, unless there's lots of snow in the Ragnarok picture, I probably couldn't tell you which is which.
*00:00*
I think it can be help other games stand out and lean more into their mechanics.
*00:00*
I'm trying to think I probably would have to pull up a li my list of like games I played last year.
*00:00*
It it's Hooktails Castle.
*00:00*
And it's like, oh my gosh, this is what I was missing this whole time.
*00:00*
If it wasn't buried in the back of my closet, I would go grab it right now because I had a post-it note with um Is it Blitz combos?
*00:00*
Yes.
*00:00*
Trails in the sky, trails to trail from zero to Azure, and then uh of Cold Steel, yeah.
*00:00*
Um but yeah, it's it's one of those series that you have to go in expecting you're it's gonna be a long haul.
*00:00*
Like twelve two, but it's like it's goes on to a DS game which is totally different.
*00:00*
Love it.
*00:00*
I think people call it.
*00:00*
like played through it.
*00:00*
And I was like, these are that was it.
*00:00*
Twelve foot tall, scary vampire lady in VR.
*00:00*
I played it in VR first.
*00:00*
It felt immediately clunky.
*00:00*
from getting Battle Network the game, but I had like the pet toy in the chips.
*00:00*
Yeah.
*00:00*
It like moved me to tears.
*00:00*
And so I've just always had an affinity for the Battle Network series, but I never went back and played the games I missed.
*00:00*
for Battle Network 3 was someone else to play with.
*00:00*
And I was trying to figure out what to do and I was in the menu and my dad saw that there was email and he's like, why are you why do you have email?
*00:00*
Incredible.
*00:00*
These games are beautiful when they're all chunky and blocky, and I don't I don't want even slight smoothing and stuff on it.
*00:00*
It's bad, I guess.
*00:00*
You can have the bad font.
*00:00*
Uh if anything, they can't take away the physical carts, the ROMs and Misters and analog pockets and things like that that can give me every chunky pixel I ever want.
*00:00*
Like because like these are RPGs.
*00:00*
I'm I'm hoping we do eventually get a Star Force collection as well.
*00:00*
Like, thank you.
*00:00*
The Wii UE shop just shut down.
*00:00*
And on the ferry ride back to St.
*00:00*
The little Switch games doesn't make sense.
*00:00*
Good for them.
*00:00*
I think I also made a a hive account for both of those things.
*00:00*
Go check that out as we get rolling through the rest of those games this year.
*00:00*
But I wanted to start off.
*00:00*
So I I wrote down I like I typed out the script and the general outlined and professor like to keep it in a educational motif and kind of theme
*00:00*
And the script was, alright, settle down, settle down, class.
*00:00*
i in not much spoiler detail turned into my professor rpg primer series of guides
*00:00*
And finally turn it into a real thing.
*00:00*
Three.
*00:00*
You can track a lot of ideas like chapter select, I think, is I have the date somewhere, but it's old.
*00:00*
Well, I had no idea.
*00:00*
Assassin's Creed, I think, is a perfect example.
*00:00*
And it's all like grind your gear up, get your stats up.
*00:00*
Things I had to play for review and whatnot at the end of the year last year I was just like, Okay, this is cool.
*00:00*
Especially in Ragnarok.
*00:00*
Uh uh f for me, RPGs are daunting.
*00:00*
Sometimes I want just like my favorite game of all time is still Mega Man X for Super Nintendo.
*00:00*
Futaba, right?
*00:00*
Just fiddling around with the controller with the game in, and you had to to like use the stairs or open a door, you had to go into a menu, click door, or click stairs to interact with them.
*00:00*
The itch started.
*00:00*
Like I was a hooked on phonics kid, reading just wasn't doing it for me.
*00:00*
I couldn't tell you what the first RPG I beat was or the first one I bought.
*00:00*
I think it was that moment in in my friend's basement watching the intro that really sold me uh on RPGs.
*00:00*
And it got really hot and I melted a Superman action figure cape on it once.
*00:00*
Just thought I was too obsessive with Pokemon and they made me get rid of it all.
*00:00*
Which obviously and so I've I fell in love with that and and played, you know, fell in love with the badge system, the cast of characters, you know, all the stuff I think are really good.
*00:00*
And I saw that a local store got in a copy of Final Fantasy III, just a loose copy.
*00:00*
I did finally try and play it actually in 2021.
*00:00*
spread spanning across multiple games.
*00:00*
Uh uh Cam Hawkins is my greatest disciple.
*00:00*
taken it ran with it so it's always it always good with his extended far greater reach than than I than I have spread the word but um
*00:00*
I think any of the things that you can do.
*00:00*
Final Fantasy.
*00:00*
Like slightly adjacent to but never fully committed.
*00:00*
Yeah.
*00:00*
was Resident Evil five because I hate tank controls.
*00:00*
Rented six, but I thought that was garbage, so I really didn't spend much time with six.
*00:00*
Yeah.
*00:00*
And I became obsessed with this game, going through, collecting all these chips, 100% I don't think I actually hundred percented it, but playing this game, and I remember distinctly in my mind
*00:00*
be.
*00:00*
network.
*00:00*
I it was like the alpha was exploding or something, like everything was gonna go bad, and Mega Man sacrificed
*00:00*
We were uh who doesn't love Proto Man as a character.
*00:00*
What a Navi, I guess, or Navi was deleted.
*00:00*
Tadashi.
*00:00*
But I've pl I've beaten at least one version of each of the other ones.
*00:00*
Until later, so I didn't really dabble much in the Legend series.
*00:00*
So I could reset that game, but keep all the powerful chips that they had collected.
*00:00*
Mega Man Network transmission for the GameCube.
*00:00*
Now the the true way to access these games is through the Mega Man Battle Network legacy collection.
*00:00*
Up and t honestly, isn't it?
*00:00*
That they're giving it Capcom's giving it to us all in one bundle.
*00:00*
collection.
*00:00*
Like they seem to be really pouring care, not just quickly porting over a bunch of Game Boy Advance games.
*00:00*
Lots of people are hoping that'll fix some of the more grotesque uh localization faux pas.
*00:00*
I want to get it on Switch because my brain says this is a Nintendo game, but I feel like it might look better and there's trophies on PlayStation, so I'm like, do you just buy both of them?
*00:00*
I want more Battle Network or something like Battle Network or even a Star Force collection, I will happily buy one for PC and one for Xbox as well, just to keep sales.
*00:00*
I yeah personally would turn it off, but I'm I'm still worried about just that representation of it and you know, turning borders and things and stuff like that off because
*00:00*
It it's one of those things where for everything else they're we're getting from it, if the font stands out as not being the best looking
*00:00*
Oh really?
*00:00*
paradox thing with Geo from Star Force meeting up with Lan from Battle Network for some stuff that we never got.
*00:00*
kind of a remastered version of the first Battle Network game on the DS that had some quality of life features and stuff added to it, but then an additional brand new
*00:00*
Holy smokes, how did I never know about this?
*00:00*
As I recall, I b uh that would be a how long to be question.
*00:00*
Loose ones in the wild and they're expensive.
*00:00*
I can't see when it's really not a good thing.
*00:00*
Finally completing my DS collection of ace attorney games.
*00:00*
They're sending out press units of these, so I reached out and they sent me one and I was able to review it.
*00:00*
But yeah, it's the prices are super volatile right now.
*00:00*
It gets so hard.
*00:00*
When it's the real thing and do you share that same sort of feeling?
*00:00*
It's like this is as close to the real experience as I can get and in an affordable like in an affordable manner.
*00:00*
The company can't possibly make money off of it because they are not giving you the option to buy it from them.
*00:00*
Yeah, it's like, well, I can just play these I can play the games this way.
*00:00*
Ooh, maybe this is it.
*00:00*
You throw that, combine that with HDR to boost the colors up to get through that that black grit.
*00:00*
You know, kids today don't even have they don't even know.
*00:00*
Yes.
*00:00*
For it to be so empty just like make a small box or something.
*00:00*
And that real ace attorney investigations again.
*00:00*
For joining me.
*00:00*
Um I have a couple things on Polygon and Ars Technica.
*00:00*
I'm just I'm just kind of everywhere.
*00:00*
I actually have still in my Google Drive my initial uh pitch doc, like where I came up with the idea for RPG University, and it was on February twenty-second, twenty fourteen.
*00:00*
Um, it was Professor Reginald P.
*00:00*
So the idea was it was going to be broken up and I would give you a breakdown of like like the stats, like what they do, kind of character backgrounds, important terms.
*00:00*
Get into the game, give them the knowledge uh uh so they're better prepared, that they could ideally have this open up this document or a PDF that I would release with the video opened up while they play a game so they would have information.
*00:00*
in kind of the world map.
*00:00*
I wanted to it didn't have the RP those primers was just Professor RPG's like Final Fantasy VII primer and I had my little logo.
*00:00*
Uh search results when you search Alliance Alive Guides, which is not even the top page anymore.
*00:00*
Sum yeah, summer of twenty twenty nineteen, um is when it started.
*00:00*
Episode 29 with David Brevik.
*00:00*
to inflate perhaps game time.
*00:00*
But it's one of those things where and I I think I've said this on like a game of the year podcast or something.
*00:00*
Just pick a team and put people out.
*00:00*
Um, but that's so Pokemon's still the same, you know.
*00:00*
And but it took me a long time and I finally, finally beat it.
*00:00*
And I had sold enough stuff so I wanted to get a lava lamp.
*00:00*
So I went down and it was Final Fantasy VI.
*00:00*
The music, I remember all that.
*00:00*
And then the next one would have been Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door.
*00:00*
that fight and I couldn't pass it.
*00:00*
I have not, no.
*00:00*
This is where Sephiroth and Cloud are from, right?
*00:00*
It's just Shadow, good guy.
*00:00*
Nothing a as far as I know, nothing else is immediately connected as far as numbers.
*00:00*
And it's like Final Fantasy for the After Years, which is like a post sequel that takes place a bunch of years later, that then eventually came out on like three or DS or Steam.
*00:00*
And I will play just to play.
*00:00*
It should be good for tracking.
*00:00*
things to do when you're an adult, let alone afford living while you're an adult.
*00:00*
uh four remake isn't out yet and we're actually time we've timed our Resident Evil Four episode to be out right before the remake 'cause you know
*00:00*
I I would think.
*00:00*
Yeah, I was gonna say are you gonna play through the VR one, which holy crap, what a good VR game that is.
*00:00*
And then they've also teased that there's some VR component to the Resident Evil 4 remake, which I'm honestly just hoping is the whole game of VR.
*00:00*
Which was like an eight h high res version of the GameCube game, but with new controls.
*00:00*
I was like, okay, cool.
*00:00*
It's so funny.
*00:00*
And then now I'm just having the best time.
*00:00*
What I always found strange was I didn't have as much of an issue with the tank controls with Oni Moosh on PS2.
*00:00*
The Resident Evil games, I don't know if because it was slower or what, but I just I'm I I wanna play the old versions of Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3.
*00:00*
I have only played Mega Man Battle Network 3.
*00:00*
And I am busting my head up against Dr.
*00:00*
his being to like shut it down, whatever it was.
*00:00*
blue at a GameStop.
*00:00*
And with my Christmas money, I remember maybe the day after, a couple days after Christmas, going to a nearby EB Games and picking up the original Mega Man Battle Network.
*00:00*
I remember somewhere on the I mean actually it's in the Battle Network games too, but the the pet, there's like an email option where people characters send you message.
*00:00*
No, don't you ca don't hook this up to the internet like this is bad.
*00:00*
Uh I remember three very fondly.
*00:00*
Ma now I can finally have someone to play with.
*00:00*
Because those probably didn't have pixel art.
*00:00*
Really cool.
*00:00*
Yeah, it was Mega Man Battle Network Operation Shooting Star.
*00:00*
select, um, which I know would be very long because they are RPGs.
*00:00*
Intensely convoluted.
*00:00*
For the four of us that love this series, go and buy a copy.
*00:00*
preservation in old video games, you and I also kindred spirits in collecting old stuff.
*00:00*
I could talk about this all the time.
*00:00*
Sometimes I just look at things, I'm like, I can't I can't afford my own hobby at this point.
*00:00*
I'm not big into the let's emulate Switch games on a Steam Deck.
*00:00*
It's a big turnoff.
*00:00*
How do I back up my collection and my save data?
*00:00*
I will happily buy the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy collection.
*00:00*
Or they just want to explore Mega Man games and they're like, what is this car chip battle trade?
*00:00*
Make them because it's so hard to buy tubes and stuff now.
*00:00*
was a monitor, not a tube TV, but just a d a des monitor designed for retro gaming, you know, the correct refresh rate and all this stuff for things like the Mr.
*00:00*
Old PC game, old console game type monitor with a really nice case.
*00:00*
Bring them back.
*00:00*
And then just like on the ride home, opening the box and just like flipping through instruction books.
*00:00*
And he left his Halo 2 instruction booklet and I took it home with me.
*00:00*
One second, let me let me check something.
*00:00*
uh is it super rare games or or fangam or yeah fangamer and um limited run.
*00:00*
It's just dead for the big companies.
*00:00*
Even PlayStation games, Xbox games, there you have nothing in there.
*00:00*
And you could learn about the game before you played it and the lore and the people and the items and it can tease you, tantalize you, like you're gonna be able to do this and do that.
*00:00*
Sure.
*00:00*
And in terms of my writing and stuff, you can find me over at Irrational Passions.
*00:00*
Obviously this hadn't been edited at the time.
*00:00*
For that I did for some of the games on the site.
*00:00*
Evolved, but it was always about helping and providing information to to new players without spoiling them too much.
*00:00*
was of the original Dragon Quest, which came out like the year I was born or maybe the year before, and my brother had gotten it.
*00:00*
I th my I guess my first RPG would have been Pokemon Blue.
*00:00*
But to tie it kind of to yours, Final Fantasy III or f I guess technically Final Fantasy VI, I think of it as three because I had a Super Nintendo that was broken here as an adult.
*00:00*
Experience here.
*00:00*
Maybe throw on like a cheat to get past that fight or something.
*00:00*
Story stuff pretty good is what I understand.
*00:00*
It it has a big bed.
*00:00*
I feel like that with most major RPG franchises.
*00:00*
It's hard.
*00:00*
Uh actually that stream I tried to the final stream it was me racing to beat the game before they woke up
*00:00*
Is so multifaceted that it can be VR, third person, first person, whatever it needs to be.
*00:00*
Right?
*00:00*
Um was during the pandemic in 2020.
*00:00*
One and zero remake change that and then I'm obviously playing two and three remake, which are modern fine controls, and I s five and six don't have tank.
*00:00*
It's all fascinating, but I just VR is I think the best, and I really hope Resident Evil 4 remake is just the whole game in VR.
*00:00*
We uh it was uh we were in the minivan heading to a local park in the winter to go sledding.
*00:00*
Stuck with me.
*00:00*
It wouldn't be until the DS where I pick up Starforce later.
*00:00*
But yeah, it's just uh and now prior to them announcing the battle network collection, I've just been working on collecting the physical carts of all the Game Boy Advance games.
*00:00*
And yeah, I just I I I love 'em.
*00:00*
Play and play each other and yeah it was just it's just a good time.
*00:00*
They're also adding online and chip battling and trading, just like the community has been for however many years that's been going on.
*00:00*
Yeah.
*00:00*
uh fascinating collections so they can like they can do the online stuff.
*00:00*
kind of original and everything we've seen, it's kind of a new font and stuff.
*00:00*
Okay.
*00:00*
It is I'm so excited.
*00:00*
These companies were cranking out pretty top-tier games very rapidly.
*00:00*
At least physically speaking, we both have and reviewed GB operators.
*00:00*
Like, what do you feel about the the scene in the market right now uh for retro gaming and collecting and and all that sort of stuff?
*00:00*
That's I could I could easily put this on you know a modded 3DS, just load the ROM and just play it on real hardware, same game, but it feels different.
*00:00*
Super Nintendo games.
*00:00*
uh emulation or versions of things, whether that's on real hardware through a ROM or uh yeah whatever other means or through something like the analog pocket or the Mr.
*00:00*
I've stepped away from necessarily like I gotta own it all.
*00:00*
My tube TV's days are theoretically numbered unless I can get someone to tune it up a bit.
*00:00*
those displays.
*00:00*
There's just there was always just something so special about going to a video like a game store or something, picking out a new game.
*00:00*
The Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass.
*00:00*
It's truly a lost art, I think, and uh I wish it could come back.
*00:00*
That Capcom still hosts the Resident Evil 4 manual, like officially, for the GameCube.
*00:00*
Capcom is finally acknowledging us Battle Network fans.
*00:00*
Um so RPG University Episode 1 was for Final Fantasy VII.
*00:00*
Um, like the luck stat or wisdom or various things like that.
*00:00*
Is is when I put the initial idea down on paper.
*00:00*
This is amazing.
*00:00*
character in world you've made.
*00:00*
has kind of adopted some aspects of the RPG genre.
*00:00*
More terminology, more just I think bloat.
*00:00*
Doesn't adapt little pieces.
*00:00*
Hollywood video, probably.
*00:00*
And then I've just dabbled I guess Kingdom Hearts would have been the next major thing in my life.
*00:00*
six, or to me it's three.
*00:00*
Oh letdowns was we didn't get that one last fight.
*00:00*
But I've RPGs have been a g when the game is right and it hooks me, it hooks me.
*00:00*
It's daunting, but the more you put into it, the the more you get out of it.
*00:00*
And of various things.
*00:00*
Um ten does the the most quote unquote I would say direct games with sequels would be ten and thirteen, so.
*00:00*
Like to to push you past any anything, but it it is hard to just I'm going to just play this RPG today.
*00:00*
The strain or stress of okay, I have to review it.
*00:00*
uh cr like not chronology, just the flow of the show because we have Yeah, like the original Re Re, which is what I call it Re-Ri.
*00:00*
had a b actually I think if I remember the time correctly I w got there like right before uh Eloise was born and then I was like I can't play VR right now.
*00:00*
to I guess like a slight Resident Evil tangent that won't necessarily be in chapter select all the way.
*00:00*
more than it is in any way, and that's because of how I've approached it.
*00:00*
I imported the physical copy of the PlayStation 3 remake of Resident Evil.
*00:00*
Big Battle Network fan.
*00:00*
Mega Man overloaded himself to save Lan, presumably destroying himself.
*00:00*
Sun?
*00:00*
Anything and everything else, then, because these games are expensive.
*00:00*
But no, I just I I fell in love with kind of the more interesting mechanics and kind of the redesigns of all the characters.
*00:00*
to like Indianapolis or something and I picked up the beautiful Joe DS game
*00:00*
And yeah, after pretty much after that, any time a new Battle Network game would come out, I'd pick it up.
*00:00*
I'm really happy.
*00:00*
But yeah, it's it looks super impressive.
*00:00*
That's incredible.
*00:00*
Do you share my concerns?
*00:00*
The only thing I think he won't get necessarily necessarily is the blocky pixel font.
*00:00*
Yeah, I think it's the the text boxes like when people are talking.
*00:00*
Mm-hmm.
*00:00*
Very similar in many respects, and I can finally use someone not Mega Man, I don't know.
*00:00*
Oh, I'm gonna be downloading that for sure.
*00:00*
It it does feel good to play them and feel the actual like mentally know that they're the the the actual physical cart or disc or what have you.
*00:00*
A if there will be a rise in the next five to ten years of like a small business or even a Kickstarter that aims
*00:00*
to release tube TVs like CRTV CRTs.
*00:00*
retro video games or things like that to give you the retro experience.
*00:00*
Oh gosh, this is a podcast now.
*00:00*
It's that part of my brain though again that goes, this TV is like thinner than a piece of paper.
*00:00*
I missed good instruction books.
*00:00*
It is a lost art, and I I'm actually really excited to someday theoretically play tunic, because I hear that that is an element of that game.
*00:00*
Okay.
*00:00*
I have an old C D binder filled with my DS instruction manuals.
*00:00*
All right.
*00:00*
It's one of those things that it took a lot of work to put them together, but they did really well for the site.
*00:00*
Yeah.
*00:00*
combat, I think, and depth in there.
*00:00*
They're well, they're both PS4 games essentially, just one has a PS5 or it's just they really they doubled down on the gear system in the second game and made it even more intricate and more
*00:00*
And that was when I would hit a wall, I would stop and be like, all right guys, I can't forget where I left off.
*00:00*
So i legitimately I think I was just kinda destined to like them because my the my first memory I have of anything
*00:00*
Try it we had this smaller TV set up in our living room with the Nintendo hooked up to it and I remember trying
*00:00*
So the big the wrestler dude.
*00:00*
have time to there are some games that I reserve for myself like that I know I'm going to enjoy uh that I want to not necessarily have the
*00:00*
Same with Trails into uh Trails to Azure, Trails into Reverie, like a Kingdom Hearts game.
*00:00*
No, I do not have a PC that could do that.
*00:00*
So I played through five and I thought that was just a kind of like a silly good silly fun time.
*00:00*
So it really wasn't until honestly the pandemic when I was off work, I was like, I'm gonna play through the Resident Evil franchise that I played through the most of the Resident Evil games.
*00:00*
That's an admirable goal.
*00:00*
It's interesting.
*00:00*
There's a small group.
*00:00*
So before we talk about this and how Capcom is just treating us so well this year, not only with Resident Evil, but also this battle network, I have to be honest with you.
*00:00*
I had never played a Mega Man game before.
*00:00*
At least own a lot of them.
*00:00*
So it's the was last year the twentieth anniversary or is this year the twentieth?
*00:00*
Like acknowledging Battle Network's existence.
*00:00*
All with an asterisk, I suppose, uh ten mainline games all together.
*00:00*
All the Mega Man collections so far.
*00:00*
Uh I don't know if I say it's bad font.
*00:00*
story cont some brand new story content and chips where Geo crosses over and you play or interact with Starforce Mega Man.
*00:00*
In the Battle Network games.
*00:00*
Oh they're about twenty hours a pop.
*00:00*
Yeah.
*00:00*
Because a lot of the systems and digital marketplaces that at one point house and allows you to buy digital versions of these games are being shut down and you can no longer get them.
*00:00*
emulation or you know copies of games on real hardware so I'm just not emulating it but just an a an affordable means to play things.
*00:00*
Super, super pro emulation for out of print content.
*00:00*
Mario game or Nintendo with their wide breadth of library of games that haven't been re-released on the virtual platform is like
*00:00*
Just all the time.
*00:00*
uh bank kind of thing that's just full of old like all my Game Boy and Game Boy Advanced um instruction booklets
*00:00*
Just the plastic they use for a Switch game.
*00:00*
Initially it it was always Professor RPG, but the RPG had stood for something
*00:00*
This kind of idea of providing beneficial introductory and of information in a non
*00:00*
And that kind of got shelved.
*00:00*
So my initial pitch was from July of twenty nineteen and I wanna say it was
*00:00*
On Rational Passions has been our Alliance Alive um guide, which for the longest time, for a very long time, was actually towards the top of
*00:00*
genre that is all-encompassing, I think, is probably fair.
*00:00*
Yeah, I I haven't touched that series since Black Flag really.
*00:00*
Uh looking for intric like you said, intricate gear crafting or hunting down r resources to craft materials or craft gear so my stats go up.
*00:00*
And I'll always remember this is in my neighborhood, it was like a weekend in the summer and we were doing a garage sale.
*00:00*
And my friend, two houses down, his name was Greg.
*00:00*
Uh I went with a lava lamp.
*00:00*
And I would eventually watch him play a bunch of it and he'd let me try it and we'd rent it, but
*00:00*
Do I buy um a lava lamp or Final Fantasy III?
*00:00*
Then I read uh Sebastian Decken's book from Boss Fight Books.
*00:00*
Oh yeah.
*00:00*
And that makes it hard to, like you said, it it's a daunting ask.
*00:00*
And VR?
*00:00*
Mega Man Battle Network 3 is a game I saw at a Costco.
*00:00*
Is it 20 or 15 or something?
*00:00*
So was that 2001 in Japan?
*00:00*
But coming out April 14th, 2023.
*00:00*
Oh yeah.
*00:00*
It's really great to see.
*00:00*
I'll be grudgingly just swallow it and like swallow my pride and be like, okay.
*00:00*
You're giving me online battles and and uh and trading, so I I guess I'll I guess you can have this.
*00:00*
this game, beat that game.
*00:00*
What?
*00:00*
It's been so long since I've really played through all the games.
*00:00*
So many of us, especially like in our ages and stuff, we remember fondly these old games.
*00:00*
To just play anything.
*00:00*
At least on the Nintendo side, up through the GameCube.
*00:00*
Super solid.
*00:00*
I'm in a this isn't a chassis thing.
*00:00*
are it's phenomenal.
*00:00*
But I I haven't seen anything beyond that and just kind of what I've heard.
*00:00*
It's it's truly a lost art.
*00:00*
um and a lot of small publishing like uh physical media companies like uh
*00:00*
We have this stuff now.
*00:00*
It takes me back to a simpler time where games were more than just the game.
*00:00*
If if we've learned anything tonight, it's that uh Capcom is doing pretty good right now.
*00:00*
Yep, those did really well.
*00:00*
Yeah.
*00:00*
Um but that doesn't mean oh man Mega Man X would be so much better if it had RPG mechanics.
*00:00*
Yeah, it it's one of those series that it it's it's a classic turn based RPG and
*00:00*
So that was my first exposure, and then I I played seven.
*00:00*
And there they're the sacrifice that Mega Man makes in that game to like save, you know, the world.
*00:00*
Can't remember what it was.
*00:00*
They actually put those up, I think, on Apple Music and Spotify not a couple of years ago in like Japanese or something.
*00:00*
From the code up port.
*00:00*
And just paid stupid money, like millions of dollars for like a graded Super Mario Brothers.
*00:00*
And it all s really stemmed from the idea of stats in RPGs and me not knowing what the hell they did.
*00:00*
So yeah, it was a gosh, at this point, six year old kind of idea that's just kinda
*00:00*
A month or so later that year that the first episode came out, I wanna say
*00:00*
reading heavy genres.
*00:00*
That I'm I don't know.
*00:00*
When I learned later that it's made um I want to say it's armature, but most of that dev team is from Metroid Prime, I'm like, of course, this all makes sense now.
*00:00*
Alpha, that was it.
*00:00*
They win.
*00:00*
Have fun.
*00:00*
No, I'm I'm curious, have you tried the fan mod that makes Resident Evil 2 remake a VR game?
*00:00*
We had classic Mega Man, we had Mega Man X.
*00:00*
It's like to do.
*00:00*
So then everyone seemed like they just wanted to throw money and get into it.
*00:00*
I thought I'd invite Scott on the Max Frequency Podcast to talk more RPGs and Mega Man because
*00:00*
I I I couldn't read, I didn't know what I was doing, but I have I vividly remember that, trying to get out of the the throne room.
*00:00*
But I can understand the daunting ask or gazing upon this monolith that is the Legend of Heroes franchise.
*00:00*
So we'll see how that shakes out.
*00:00*
I j I'm really I would love I know there's gonna be a lot of art and a music gallery, which holy smokes the music in these games is
*00:00*
But at the same time, I don't know if I found that to be just really cool because I just played four other Mega Man Battle Network games that were
*00:00*
I just really learned and realized this the same thing was happening with Castlevania at the time too, with Game Boy games coming out every year and then the DS games coming out right after that.
*00:00*
But yeah, it's just it's getting more and more expensive just like everything.
*00:00*
It doesn't take eight people to to put it in your living room.
*00:00*
It's just there's a warmth to it and I think it is.
*00:00*
I was playing I was streaming Castlevania not long ago and I was like, here's your password for this level.
*00:00*
No, but I did almost do the PS2 one.
*00:00*
That's why there's not a Metroid Prime 4 yet.
*00:01*
Now Resident Evil Village is coming to VR here in just six weeks from this recording.
*00:01*
Art for those.
*00:01*
You could like go on s like special missions with other characters, other navies and use those.
*00:01*
They just want to experience these and like with Square holding back and like no there not being a good way to play Chrono Trigger right now or
*00:01*
So you can follow me on Twitter at Professor RPG.
*00:01*
Links to that stuff will be in the show notes.
*00:01*
The fonts of the games because it looked good.
*00:01*
This is great news.
*00:01*
I think I think during lockdown and everything, for whatever reason, the concept and notion of collecting old video games became hip.
*00:01*
Streamers play a lot of these games.
*00:01*
And you couldn't find it?
*00:01*
Good for them.
*00:01*
I've uh 'cause I remember you on the Paper Mario episode that we had discussed, you had brought up that you did uh Thousand Year Door episode, ther err, you know what?
*00:01*
That's perhaps another discussion for another time.
*00:01*
You maybe you and I are kindred spirits here.
*00:01*
Um and then let's see.
*00:01*
X was all at once.
*00:01*
Thank you for having me.
*00:01*
So with origin is when I kind of started diving off hard.
*00:01*
I never had played them.
*00:01*
Um anyway, Mega Man like shows up a little at the end.
*00:01*
But then there's this big part of me that's like, I want the real thing.
*00:01*
But that opened my eyes to the dolphin emulator and like the state that that's in.
*00:01*
She's the hacker girl, right?
*00:01*
Like like we were talking earlier before the show, like you have a kid, I have a house.
*00:01*
I remember the look of it.
*00:01*
I just I have some concerns.
*00:01*
I don't know, but I'm looking at the trailer on the chips.
*00:01*
I thought this was just like a nickname dubbed to you by friends or something because you play so many RPGs, but it is a whole
*00:01*
God, how many games are that?
*00:01*
Oh, it's so cute.
*00:01*
So as which one's your favorite out of uh obviously mine would be three white.
*00:01*
Uh so but I played that actually.
*00:01*
Yep.
*00:01*
It just it it's so much care put into it that it seems to be.
*00:01*
It can it can really enhance it.
*00:01*
They're fair, but yeah, Final Fantasy IV has sequel I guess seven does.
*00:01*
Yeah.
*00:01*
No.
*00:01*
For first time ever I had cried at from a game.
*00:01*
Very good steal.
*00:01*
Even GameCube and stuff, no.
*00:01*
And I have to say, as someone with the RetroTink 5X Pro and a Mr.
*00:01*
And then going back and playing the PS4 version of the game, which is just whatever with tank controls, I'm like, this is awful.
*00:01*
There's s some of us out there.
*00:01*
I just more games like this, please.
*00:01*
It's like, I don't know if I'll like this game.
*00:01*
So Sebastian uh like studies opera and music and stuff.
*00:01*
Get those clicks.
*00:01*
Yep.
*00:01*
And then the neighbor kid down the street, he was uh he was an only child, so he kinda got all the games, right?
*00:01*
At least play that one.
*00:01*
I was the human weapons, the covenant weapons, the world, the lore, how the game worked.
*00:01*
It's so good.
*00:01*
Now, the remake shouldn't feel like that.
*00:01*
Cause like they're redrawing the uh the artwork from the chips for when you trade.
*00:01*
Open source CRT monitor.
*00:01*
I have to I don't actually know the story.
*00:01*
So I love that you have the record of that.
*00:01*
So I streamed it in VR.
*00:01*
I think I think I remember reading or seeing in one of the uh earlier trailers is that like this is
*00:01*
And I got to the halfway point of uh the world is like being lifted up and um it's ka it's Kafka, right?
*00:02*
I can finally play it.
*00:02*
I just I just snagged a copy of uh Ace Attorney Investigations with some Christmas.
*00:02*
Sure.
*00:02*
Yeah.
*00:02*
They really kind of honed their craft because this was essentially this was an annualized franchise.
*00:02*
This was a blast talking to you again, dude.
*00:02*
I'm fine and dandy.
*00:02*
Now when the game is an RPG, go for it.
*00:02*
And which is strange because I was a I was really bad at reading growing up
*00:02*
My Mario can turn into a paper airplane.
*00:02*
Uh so Resident Evil was well, I wouldn't say far longer.
*00:02*
Okay.
*00:02*
But like, games from the 3DS, or Vita era, or PSP, Super Nintendo, all these where at the end of the day, people just want to play games.
*00:02*
And I think in the intervening years, while I definitely prefer to play the physical game, I think I've more settled onto playing hardware accurate.
*00:02*
I think the biggest thing I miss from older generations, though, has to be instruction books.
*00:02*
I remember watching him play for a while.
*00:02*
I don't think it was a blockbuster.
*00:02*
R remake.
*00:02*
But yeah.
*00:02*
Well, I'm glad that there are four of us.
*00:02*
Red Sun, Blue Moon.
*00:02*
It was l on the counter in the little bin of GBA games back when they did that for like five bucks.
*00:02*
Have you have you played all of them?
*00:02*
It was still split into two quote unquote collections.
*00:02*
I'm really worried about the emulation and representation of the the pixel art and that stuff.
*00:02*
Are they going to have trophies for each individual game?
*00:02*
John, I was reading the Phantom Hourglass manual, just like pouring into this world.
*00:02*
I think even their digital manuals are essentially dead too.
*00:02*
The Wii UE shop is It's gone.
*00:02*
My concern.
*00:02*
So it's also really nice to have an accessible and affordable version of all of the games.
*00:02*
Um so yeah, that's that's where you can that's where you can find me.
*00:02*
Professor RPG playing RPG games with us.
*00:02*
It's an anniversary.
*00:02*
Right.
*00:02*
And it was we never got it over here in the West officially, but a couple years ago now, I wanna say uh fan translation came out for it.
*00:02*
It's almost like video game preservation's a good thing, right?
*00:02*
So uh at the time I'm pretty sure the idea was that it was going to be a video series.
*00:02*
Yeah, yeah, get the clicks.
*00:02*
Yeah, Ri-Ri.
*00:02*
Um and then Mega Man Battle Network double team uh DS, like the double pack from Mega Man Battle Network 5.
*00:02*
They probably had Could have been.
*00:02*
These games are n would have been no longer accessible to the market.
*00:02*
Sorry listener.
*00:02*
Yeah.
*00:02*
Um these are full blown like edu they're guides.
*00:02*
It knows what it is.
*00:02*
Next to a copy of Final Fantasy.
*00:02*
But a lot of the other ones, it's okay, well, sure, I'll review it.
*00:02*
No, don't pull this up, please.
*00:02*
I was living on St.
*00:02*
I couldn't find it.
*00:02*
We go back and we collect it and that's uh th that's part of the thrill of the hunt, honestly, is finding that complete inbox copy.
*00:02*
So when did when did this turn into RPG University the podcast?
*00:02*
I I really jumped off hard of that series when they started really upping the stat in RPG systems and mechanics.
*00:02*
Like no matter what I and I was just like I don't want to do I want to move on with this plot.
*00:02*
Resident Lase.
*00:02*
And I finally beat it.
*00:02*
It's super simple to collect all the chips or things like that.
*00:02*
Um, especially when it's done well.
*00:02*
I'm your host, Max Roberts, and joining me this time, I'm uh I'm getting ready to be educated by none other than Professor RPG himself, Scott White.
*00:02*
Body Glumbottom is the official name of RP Professor RPG.
*00:02*
Like uh these tra uh uh are they is that how you say it?
*00:02*
Now we're doing the show and I'm playing through everything.
*00:02*
It would be the Star Force trilogy of games.
*00:02*
Of the characters share and what exactly they influence in simple to understand and relatable terms
*00:02*
So it's not like just the ROMs of the GBA games.
*00:02*
That is so cool.
*00:02*
I I've I have not jokingly but joked with uh Logan that we need to do this season of chapter
*00:02*
I think some people are bringing that style of work back.
*00:02*
Yes.
*00:02*
I never it never really I don't know.
*00:02*
So we'll see.
*00:02*
It was like a big glob with a gold glowy orb in the heart.
*00:02*
It's just crazy to think about that in hindsight that they that companies were cranking out annualized
*00:02*
Not that they're all connected.
*00:02*
So we've we're playing remakes where there are remakes.
*00:02*
I know the soundtrack in the first one was rough.
*00:02*
True.
*00:02*
Z uh the Zero Collection, X, Original, Um, I want the trophies for PlayStation, and I want the portability factor of the Switch.
*00:02*
I it really genuinely looks like those displays and those those scan line grids.
*00:02*
Yep.
*00:02*
And that would eventually like that stewed in my mind and kind of that idea of helping new players
*00:03*
Savin, the monk.
*00:03*
It is stupid how good it is and how much work they that went into to make that game what it is.
*00:03*
Okay.
*00:03*
Like I I I I was aware of Mega Man, I guess.
*00:03*
GameCube, yeah.
*00:03*
I know Mega Man has its 35th anniversary.
*00:03*
Oh, I'm seeing some of the font now.
*00:03*
I mean, I'm going to look into that very soon.
*00:03*
I uh ki uh during the COVID time I kind of got this kick of
*00:03*
It's just not possible.
*00:03*
Makes absolutely zero sense.
*00:03*
And really from there that took off.
*00:03*
Futaba.
*00:03*
Okay.
*00:03*
Uh but I think it was then that like really solidified like th this could be cool.
*00:03*
I know Ray Apollo also is a big Mega Man Battle Network fan.
*00:03*
And so I've leaned more into just using real hardware or hardware accurate emulation.
*00:03*
If you'd like, you can follow me on Twitter at Max Roberts143 in my writing over at maxfrequency.
*00:03*
But it so many games just seem to have it now.
*00:03*
Or if you ever want, just like we'll get in the Discord call and uh and I can help you through.
*00:03*
And so I just appreciate it when I hear people who are just all in on the RPG.
*00:03*
So this was like a big deal, like, oh, it's a new Mega Man designer.
*00:03*
I don't.
*00:03*
I have a digital copy of every game and every save data I have except for the N64 save datas.
*00:03*
I'll be I'll make this quick.
*00:03*
Of course.
*00:03*
That's right.
*00:03*
Um I think they're f they're definitely fun and unique experiences.
*00:03*
And so the oh I looked it up for you.
*00:03*
It's it's my big boy money, I guess.
*00:03*
Why do I have to pay 80 bucks, 70 bucks, 150 bucks?
*00:03*
But Yes.
*00:03*
Yes, creator of Diablo, turns out, big Paper Mario fan.
*00:03*
So I feel like my love of RPG was stunted early.
*00:03*
But it sounds so daunting.
*00:03*
It is very cool.
*00:03*
Yeah.
*00:03*
I guess they did put all these games on the Wii U, eShop.
*00:03*
I don't know if you share this concern.
*00:03*
I think it's cool to look back and see the growth of anything we make.
*00:03*
I was infatuated with the demo kiosk at Target.
*00:03*
And I was like, he explains the themes and how they tie to these characters and basically he tells me the story of fun the the back half of the story I missed through the music.
*00:03*
Yeah, exactly.
*00:03*
Um wonderful characters, grossly under underappreciated.
*00:03*
And then there's but then we jump to seven and then we'll play Resident Evil 2 remake and three remake.
*00:03*
And I played ironically, I was like right outside the final boss before I stopped to play the the normal one to record the show.
*00:03*
And then I realized I still ha like get lost and I had no idea where to go, so I didn't really play it much.
*00:03*
But another series that I think, well, I know we both love.
*00:03*
Yes.
*00:03*
Uh it wouldn't actually be until I bought that blue cart that I actually offloaded all of the chips that that person had collected.
*00:03*
We get the voice actor from the old Bao Network cartoon back to voice the voice Mega Man and
*00:03*
At least that one.
*00:03*
John at the time, and so the big shopping center was on the next island, St.
*00:03*
And now everyone's like, you gotta play royal.
*00:03*
I had to take like private lessons and classes to get better at reading.
*00:03*
It may have been a blockbuster, but it was one of those two.
*00:03*
I hooked had it in this super NT on the CRT, printed out a game facts walkthrough.
*00:03*
So you wow, you're actually we're um pretty close actually together here with our relative like timelines of sinking into it.
*00:03*
And the States.
*00:03*
I love you aren't professor RPG.
*00:03*
It was it's somewhere in my room or in a box still.
*00:03*
Like Final Fantasy 16.
*00:03*
I played that twice already, and I'll play it a third time here because I played it both in VR and
*00:03*
So I've always been a champion of it, but I've never gone back and played them.
*00:03*
Right.
*00:03*
Yes.
*00:03*
It's so wild.
*00:03*
I yeah, it's The Trails game has perhaps the best interconnected woven story arcs and storyline of any RPG I've ever played.
*00:03*
I picked up eight, really enjoyed eight, and then I went back and beat half of two and I platinumed three.
*00:03*
Like he th he immediately thought this was some sort of hacky scam thing.
*00:03*
I I started Ragnarok and I played it once and then just with
*00:03*
And I think it'll be an interesting discussion because that is without a doubt the most beloved of this the series.
*00:03*
Oh my it Resident Evil 4 in VR, I played it first, so I actually I streamed that game, so that helped me.
*00:03*
Okay.
*00:03*
I think it's so much better.
*00:03*
Yeah.
*00:03*
It was so stylized and it just looks better, you know?
*00:03*
I really liked five because you could control other characters besides Mega Man.
*00:03*
100%.
*00:03*
But thank you so much for listening and until next time.
*00:03*
I'm like, Kratos, I think maybe basic stats would have been fine, but there's just
*00:03*
But I just I guess that's how I was getting my fill.
*00:03*
It turns out he's still alive.
*00:03*
Yeah, I remember the the year I got my uh my Game Boy Advance for Christmas, I got Castlevania Circle of the Moon and Golden Sun
*00:03*
It's not two separate releases like a year apart like they did with the original Mega Man legacy collection.
*00:03*
There's so much.
*00:03*
I was flipping through that manual.
*00:03*
So he had that, and I s like dabbled with it over there.
*00:04*
Like everything has just shot up in price and I think part of it is because it's become hip, but at the same time I think another reason is
*00:04*
Exactly.
*00:04*
Oh, it's so good.
*00:04*
Which is fitting for a role-playing thing I did.
*00:04*
It definitely knows what it is.
*00:04*
Like he had shown me or Final Fantasy III at the time.
*00:04*
Yes.
*00:04*
It's gonna have mono controls, it's gonna feel fine.
*00:04*
But it was always one of those games that I wanted to play through.
*00:04*
They're giving us what we want.
*00:04*
Now then, I am your professor, Professor Regimal Peabody Glumbottle.
*00:04*
Yes.
*00:04*
Wiley's final boss oh I think it was Omega.
*00:04*
We'll talk about those.
*00:04*
I think it's going it the blocky aspect, those beautiful, beautiful sharp pixels, I think will be there.
*00:04*
There's a RPG university on TikTok that I don't know what I'm doing with, but it's on there too.
*00:04*
I've done some RPG guides and stuff over at IGN.
*00:04*
Yeah.
*00:04*
I don't want to get too cracked.
*00:04*
I'm the one that got him into trails and he's one of the people I see talk about it all the time now.
*00:04*
I think really the only ones that are connected would be the ones with sequels like 10-2 and and 13 and it's three parts.
*00:04*
Well, you have a lot of Battle Network games to look forward to.
*00:04*
And that's always stuck with me.
*00:04*
He'll swallow the cyber world.
*00:04*
And if people are interested or want to try them themselves, if they want the physical physical product, the quote unquote legal way
*00:04*
Well, I think that does it for us tonight on this episode of the Max Frequency Podcast.
*00:04*
Mm-hmm.
*00:04*
So that I think that at least and that's the only Final Fantasy game I've really played.
*00:04*
You'll be glad you did.
*00:04*
Alright, it's it's a little nutty out there.
*00:04*
Um Dang it.
*00:04*
One of uh I'd say many letdowns of Kingdom Hearts three but
*00:04*
It's more of like a tower defense.
*00:04*
But I I that sounds so here
*00:04*
I'm like, that's a sequel to Battle Network, clearly the same vein.
*00:04*
And it's just getting lost, especially in the earlier games, is the maps are so
*00:04*
Ooh, pretty.
*00:04*
People here are Max Frequency, you may have listened to Chapter Select Season 1 Paper Mario.
*00:04*
It's like I should just I'll do something.
*00:04*
And I don't know if it's a good thing.
*00:04*
So it's it's not terribly surprising.
*00:04*
It's it's so light hearted and it's uh Yeah.
*00:04*
Yep.
*00:04*
Um man, what a game.
*00:04*
It's so much I've you know I guess the only game I've played so far with tank controls is Resident Evil 4 because
*00:04*
And I'm like, my mom's like, it's time to get out of the car, we gotta go.
*00:04*
Yes.
*00:04*
And it was I i like I said, big fan of Mega Man X earlier, and this was very different.
*00:04*
Okay.
*00:04*
You can follow my podcast, RPG University, at underscore RPG University on Twitter.
*00:04*
All in.
*00:04*
And then I was very torn.
*00:04*
Yeah.
*00:04*
Especially when it's done well.
*00:04*
Some just you see some games, it's like, how how does it cost this much?
*00:04*
It's wildly easy these days.
*00:04*
Maybe that's a bit forced by the fact there's a kid in there.
*00:04*
I I remember.
*00:04*
So I love that you have a record of that.
*00:04*
Yeah, not not every game do I want do do I dive in to
*00:04*
I'm so excited to play that game.
*00:04*
Um, and then when I started writing for Irrational Passions, this
*00:04*
It's pretty focused on chapter select stuff.
*00:04*
And PSVR too.
*00:04*
That's right.
*00:04*
He like got Lan out and sacrificed himself to stop Alpha.
*00:04*
No problems with that.
*00:04*
There's four.
*00:04*
There was Legends, but I didn't really have a PlayStation 1
*00:04*
Like it it stands out, but I don't know if I necessarily classify it as
*00:04*
I think this would be really fun.
*00:04*
Uh I'm sure the rest of them are good.
*00:04*
Um another project, dang it, now I forget the name of this one too, that just had a Kickstarter wrap up.
*00:04*
And I'm like, ah, this does not, this is the opposite of what this game needed.
*00:04*
Futaba and her palace.
*00:04*
And when we were done with the sale or whatever, my friend Greg told me to come down that he had had that he had this new game that he wanted to show me on Super Nintendo.
*00:04*
I was like, I need to I need to own that.
*00:04*
It's so it has to be so good.
*00:04*
Shoot the man written down.
*00:04*
Like brand new CRTs.
*00:04*
And I'll try and find that for the show notes as well.
*00:04*
You're good.
*00:04*
I don't know why there's they take up so much space when there's nothing in there
*00:04*
And then we bought the game, I want to say at a hot
*00:04*
I've uh still waiting for that third fight from uh Kingdom Hearts 3.
*00:04*
It's super fun.
*00:04*
I saw the box for Mega Man Battle Network 3 white.
*00:04*
It's gone, gone, right?
*00:04*
Yeah, I don't like it when they I don't like it when companies go back and change the
*00:04*
It was a remake
*00:04*
Like it's it's so it feels a little sad to me, but passwords
*00:04*
It's been too long.
*00:04*
How did you become Professor RPG?
*00:05*
Yeah, obviously.
*00:05*
I should be like together at last.
*00:05*
They don't have the DS thing.
*00:05*
Is this a Final Fantasy collection situation where gonna get bad font?
*00:05*
Like they used to, they did a little brief transition and now they're just that's all gone entirely.
*00:05*
So if you want to hear my thoughts on the games themselves instead of just how dope they are in VR,
*00:05*
And it I they sure they have their issues, uh, but any RPG does.
*00:05*
I remember them pick or then picking up
*00:05*
I've dabbled a little bit just as like preliminary research and stuff and
*00:05*
Could have been.
*00:05*
Um I would have found that cool as a kid, so yeah, you're not alone.
*00:05*
You know, will Eloise know about it?
*00:05*
For frivolous needs, not every game needs RPG mechanics.
*00:05*
It goes both ways, you know?
*00:05*
So Final Fantasy IV has sequels.
*00:05*
Yes.
*00:05*
Um in terms of the the battle network games, the only one I haven't beaten is six.
*00:05*
Uh I can buy Mega Man twice.
*00:05*
Your review actually like informed me that
*00:05*
And that led me down to having basically up through
*00:05*
Yes, this is it.
*00:05*
And like I booted up treasure planet on the Game Boy the other night.
*00:05*
So much.
*00:05*
It's just I miss those books and Yeah.
*00:05*
There's no re there's no reason
*00:05*
It's it's wild.
*00:05*
It took me, I think, oh, three years to beat Persona V
*00:05*
Um for whatever reason I was dead set that I wanted a lava lamp.
*00:05*
And it was there for the rest of time.
*00:05*
A kid across the street had it, and you go on from there and
*00:05*
Like I think that's my problem.
*00:05*
And to tie it back to Resident Evil 4
*00:05*
That was that was something I never had
*00:05*
So it was two years ago, it was the 20th.
*00:05*
You better believe it.
*00:05*
Have you downloaded the collection of every single SNES manual that that guy put together?
*00:05*
Personally my favorite Paper Mario game.
*00:05*
Like I feel like RPGs are everywhere and RPG elements are in everything.
*00:05*
So like I was aware clearly of Mega Man.
*00:05*
So like May Man Battle Number Three is the best.
*00:05*
Later, Lan gets a message from his father, reveals Alpha wasn't deleted until now because of
*00:05*
The art looks really nice.
*00:05*
I think of Phil Philip Summers uh with his hand-drawn gaming stuff.
*00:05*
Yes.
*00:05*
And I chose Lava Lamp.
*00:05*
But I'm just so surprised
*00:05*
I whatever.
*00:05*
I know that there is an open source CRT project.
*00:05*
It's not twenty inches deep with a big old
*00:05*
I don't know if I'm going to review it, but that's one of those games where even if I'm not going to review it, I will play and I will play it.
*00:05*
And so I never had someone else to play with.
*00:05*
And it just uh moved me to tears as of however old I was.
*00:05*
I don't that's what I mean.
*00:05*
But again, I don't know how long these games take as an adult because as a kid it felt like it took forever, but maybe they're not as long as I uh
*00:05*
I'll try and find it for the show notes, but I do remember seeing someone taking it to a sh a show.
*00:05*
Good good.
*00:05*
It like it's pretty.
*00:05*
A hundred percent.
*00:05*
So it's I want to play it both in VR and in third person.
*00:05*
I'm just shocked perhaps one of my biggest and most anticipated games of the year.
*00:05*
Yeah.
*00:05*
That would be the logical next step.
*00:05*
That would be cool to get all those versions, but maybe even get the special crossover remake of Battle Network 1 that incorporated and kinda did a time
*00:05*
But let's say the collection wasn't real.
*00:05*
What is this?
*00:05*
And there's just something warm about a CRT, just that warm buzz, and if you put your arm next to it your hair smells up.
*00:05*
People I know, people I don't know, all this time talking about this
*00:05*
Um which has led to some interesting
*00:05*
So I'm just trying to find time to like beat Resident Evil games and those are like six hours, seven hours a pop.
*00:05*
I'm like looking at pictures now.
*00:05*
I didn't get very far in it.
*00:05*
It's actually the code that they're bringing up into the modern
*00:05*
Oh my gosh.
*00:05*
You can find me at rpgsite.
*00:05*
Trails of cold steel?
*00:05*
It's it's weird.
*00:05*
I'm I'm almost done with two as of this recording.
*00:05*
You you seriously will be.
*00:05*
Occasionally, sometimes.
*00:05*
So That's one thing I've been really curious to see if
*00:05*
I'm like, I don't know if I can do that again right now.
*00:06*
I would I would need some uh to to bust out the harder drinks than Mountain Dew for for that kind of
*00:06*
At least.
*00:06*
So you telling me it's the the code they're burning up actually feels
*00:06*
And I poured over that book.
*00:06*
There was a world of stuff surrounding them.
*00:06*
In a glorious way.
*00:06*
It was Final Fantasy 7-101.
*00:06*
We talk about these old games.
*00:06*
But mostly irrational passions or RPG sites.
*00:06*
Have you read his book on Final Fantasy VI?
*00:06*
And then I played Residue of Four and VR.
*00:06*
I just never was appeal like drawn into it.
*00:06*
It's over?
*00:06*
Yep.
*00:06*
And I how
*00:06*
Like I think they're good games.
*00:06*
It might have been for RPG site.
*00:06*
Absolutely love that game.
*00:06*
Um in it for the long haul.
*00:06*
Yes, look at
*00:06*
I did pick up Mega Man Battle Network 3.
*00:06*
Mm-hmm.
*00:06*
Credit where credit is due.
*00:06*
Yeah, and I think that's part of why I want like like I was mentioning, wanting to collect all the Battle Network games.
*00:06*
That one also.
*00:06*
Thank you so much.
*00:06*
But I I'll always remember having the conundrum of
*00:06*
But I need to see like the gameplay.
*00:06*
Like I Ace Attorney Investigations.
*00:06*
But it's a brand new CRT.
*00:06*
So first episode was with Alex.
*00:06*
Mm-hmm.
*00:06*
It's one of Battle?
*00:06*
It really does capture it.
*00:06*
So they were all like in super nice sh condition.
*00:06*
I was like, I can't forget this palace.
*00:06*
It it helps when you're getting paid to review them.
*00:06*
It's the Japanese versions of the the code.
*00:06*
Now I'm are you I feel
*00:06*
Pretty much.
*00:06*
Capcom turned their shit around.
*00:06*
It c it sometimes adding RPG mechanics does enhance a game, makes it more engaging, more enriching.
*00:06*
But I I'll always remember that, and I think that's when it
*00:06*
Like I think the first one that I really played through
*00:06*
They don't have double team in the Proto Man and Kernel.
*00:06*
And I thought that was
*00:06*
That runs on Apple Silicon incredibly well.
*00:06*
Like as you get home, like, oh, what's this gonna do?
*00:06*
Adios
*00:06*
I know that's an important game.
*00:06*
I would love to go back someday, maybe
*00:06*
Oh man.
*00:06*
Crisis Core.
*00:06*
Yeah.
*00:06*
Just cartoons.
*00:06*
And so I wasn't buying these games myself.
*00:06*
And speaking of
*00:06*
It's like that's stupid.
*00:06*
No
*00:06*
Limited run.
*00:06*
Yeah.
*00:06*
But when we can just be a little lighter on it
*00:06*
Nice.
*00:06*
But I've you've you've played Resident Evil, I think, far longer than I have.
*00:06*
I've seen a couple copies.
*00:06*
I will send this to you.
*00:06*
Yep.
*00:06*
Especially when it's so interconnected, especially each arc, and
*00:06*
It's like there's lots of
*00:06*
I really think Resident Evil is like a VR series to me.
*00:06*
And then the the online competitive community.
*00:06*
Beautiful Joe double trouble.
*00:06*
Yeah.
*00:06*
Why do you need I th okay, so the disc I can kind of understand because you need enough space to actually put the disc, but
*00:06*
They're full blown.
*00:06*
It was it was pretty a cool one.
*00:06*
And we're gonna replay that game for the show, obviously.
*00:06*
This is so interesting.
*00:06*
I
*00:06*
Some of them did very well.
*00:06*
It's an old idea that just finally kind of came up.
*00:06*
And I think the most read article
*00:06*
I think of God of War 2018 and Ragnarok specifically.
*00:06*
And so he writes about the music of Final Fantasy.
*00:06*
Oh my god.
*00:06*
Like I loved the concept of it.
*00:06*
Um I
*00:06*
Like I was like, okay, whatever.
*00:06*
I had some friends in high school that played as well, so we would net battle, we would c get our GBA connectors out and
*00:06*
Or Or is it gonna be super simple like beat?
*00:06*
It
*00:06*
And so what does someone want to do when they see
*00:06*
I remember one Christmas my cousin got an Xbox and Halo 2 for Christmas.
*00:06*
Okay.
*00:07*
And Ninja, I wanted that ninja guy to like make it.
*00:07*
He thought it was real.
*00:07*
Just look at it.
*00:07*
Um which is just unfathomable these days, where a game will take three to five years to even make.
*00:07*
It's true.
*00:07*
You know, one of the things that you and I I know we have in common
*00:07*
Yeah, like a CRT TV, kickstart it, geared towards
*00:07*
Oh yeah
*00:07*
And last year my mom actually found it in the basement.
*00:07*
So we'll
*00:07*
Cause I mean at this point
*00:07*
Um, but like the physical editions came with both both collections.
*00:07*
I'm not.
*00:07*
Well, you're out of luck.
*00:07*
Bummer.
*00:07*
But you know
*00:07*
It's see like that's so good.
*00:07*
And I remember.
*00:07*
And if it if it supporting this tells Capcom
*00:07*
So I'm just I'm a little worried about the emulation side of things.
*00:07*
I like I can't.
*00:07*
So there is a community of people who trying to find accurate recreations or representations of
*00:07*
I yeah, that's the
*00:07*
So of course I would want one of the most
*00:07*
But then uh to make a long story short, my parents
*00:07*
It was scratched, so we returned it and they because that we had bought a used copy, and then they bought me a new copy.
*00:07*
Hundred percent.
*00:07*
Oh geez.
*00:07*
But it it's just a series I've or I mean, a f a type of game that I've just I feel
*00:07*
Um anyway, I'm like finally trying this again.
*00:07*
All
*00:07*
Let's see.
*00:07*
They closed it.
*00:07*
Interesting.
*00:07*
Everyone go buy Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, please.
*00:07*
Um
*00:07*
Like why is that your name?
*00:07*
They just weren't what I wanted from an Assassin's Creed game.
*00:07*
I think I remember for months, I would just randomly pop in my head, uh
*00:07*
And I remember the opening of the Narch scene.
*00:07*
That was the first resident evil like retro resident evil that got rid of the tank controls.
*00:07*
Occasionally.
*00:07*
There's something
*00:07*
I was so happy it was in there.
*00:07*
I I kind of appreciate it when a game almost
*00:07*
I always want to say trials, but it it's trails.
*00:07*
I do.
*00:07*
I remember who's not a big fan.
*00:07*
At least play Battle Network 3.
*00:07*
They'll do booklets with their games and stuff.
*00:07*
High scan PDF.
*00:07*
Like they they kinda got in there and nipped the bud, um, unintentionally, and and since then they've apologized.
*00:07*
Seven yeah.
*00:07*
I mean
*00:07*
I'm here, I'm getting taught.
*00:07*
Mega Man here, I would
*00:07*
You've role-played your own role-playing character.
*00:07*
Yeah.
*00:07*
Could like like you said, it could have been just because it has a cool box art.
*00:07*
Like glorious fashion.
*00:07*
Right.
*00:07*
I just
*00:07*
Like games, there are some games that I know I will enjoy.
*00:07*
I'm like, I can't.
*00:07*
Um I love it.
*00:07*
I'm like, I don't know what to do in this game.
*00:07*
As I mean, I guess as long as my CRT works, she'll at least be aware of it.
*00:07*
Like what what could I do?
*00:07*
I've what got me into Resident Evil to try it in the first place was seven for PSR.
*00:07*
Okay.
*00:07*
And so I got Pegasus and then Zerker Ninja, like we were talking before the show, and I played both of those.
*00:07*
Yeah.
*00:07*
There were some dark times there in the like Xbox 360 era, but they've they've turned themselves around.
*00:07*
It is it's my go-to when I don't know what to play.
*00:07*
Have you played it on Quest?
*00:07*
And so let's see.
*00:07*
I guess that's a good thing I did that.
*00:07*
Uh but Capcom is finally
*00:07*
They're bringing in chips that were only at exclusive events that obviously you couldn't get anymore.
*00:07*
Ooh, nice.
*00:07*
I'll put this in the show notes.
*00:07*
Where can the people find what you work on?
*00:07*
I'm I'm a huge proponent of like keeping track of things and dates and ideas and
*00:07*
You know?
*00:07*
I know that I had I don't know if this came afterward.
*00:07*
They have been accessible.
*00:07*
We like the we like the retro stuff.
*00:07*
I uh so I have this small red lot like
*00:07*
net.
*00:07*
I'm like I'm skimming your primer for Legend of Heroes, Trails of Cold Steel.
*00:08*
Do I want a lava lamp or do I want Final Fantasy III?
*00:08*
These characters are interesting.
*00:08*
Oh, I still have I
*00:08*
Cause it's everyone says it's so bad
*00:08*
Like, why do you have email on this?
*00:08*
Um, I get I get the draw, but at the same time it's like not quite my thing.
*00:08*
The stuff that the community is doing with Shadow Masks
*00:08*
Um
*00:08*
In a easy to digestible guide.
*00:08*
This is awesome.
*00:08*
I know where I'm at.
*00:08*
I'm interested enough.
*00:08*
I really hope that's what it is.
*00:08*
I was like, I want this and I got it.
*00:08*
I feel like you're the only person I know who actually talks about this series is Make a Man Battle Network.
*00:08*
He got he got everything.
*00:08*
And I think eventually he even went on to get five, probably Proto-Man, because
*00:08*
So I feel like a fake fan sometimes.
*00:08*
Thomas, and that's where we bought it.
*00:08*
It definitely does.
*00:08*
So we get to see like
*00:08*
And so I want to explain this to a certain degree.
*00:08*
It's an anniversary.
*00:08*
It's it's been interesting over the COVID years.
*00:08*
Um, and it's just so easy now, like everything can run.
*00:08*
I'll buy it before I have the console is kind of one of those.
*00:08*
Duo in that one?
*00:08*
Battle network.
*00:08*
Like can I get this is showing me all multiplayer.
*00:08*
Well, we'll see how that goes.
*00:08*
You all are here for Final Fantasy 7101, correct?
*00:08*
And then later on
*00:08*
Crisis Core, Durge.
*00:08*
And Ash Polson um also is a big um
*00:08*
Right?
*00:08*
Mm-hmm.
*00:08*
I'm going to be very curious to see if we if that ever kinda happens.
*00:08*
It's
*00:08*
RPG has mechanics, characters, plot.
*00:08*
But then there are just some games
*00:08*
The daunt.
*00:08*
Yeah, rip rip to the real one.
*00:08*
I wonder if that is upscaled art from the physical chip toys
*00:08*
We needed less of that and more
*00:08*
Everyone talks about these.
*00:08*
And I don't know how you have the time for it, man.
*00:08*
The only I guess the only other game I had played was we had rented
*00:08*
And not only is it they're putting all these games together in a collection.
*00:08*
Yeah.
*00:08*
I'm going to school right now.
*00:08*
Sometimes I am
*00:08*
Cause a lot of times I think they use it as a cushion.
*00:08*
And I was like, Mom, I want this.
*00:08*
I don't know.
*00:08*
It's so hard and difficult.
*00:08*
Yeah.
*00:08*
It was like in a rocket ship-like shape and it was red.
*00:08*
I could just never get my mind around tank controls.
*00:08*
I'm we're in the final cutscenes here.
*00:08*
So you got double team and double trouble.
*00:08*
Just some things were very poorly localized in some of the earlier games.
*00:08*
That's available on iOS.
*00:08*
It's like, okay, I want to do something where I learn
*00:08*
Like Ragnarok probably was the last thing that I guess Pokemon there was some Pokemon in there.
*00:08*
Yeah.
*00:08*
Honestly, I I would
*00:08*
There's no other collection of Mega Man games to
*00:08*
Just these scans of philosophy.
*00:08*
Like, good job, Capcom.
*00:08*
But for whatever reason.
*00:08*
But it was it was a at one point.
*00:08*
Um I think there's a a pleasant simplicity when you don't have to worry about a lot of that stuff.
*00:08*
I'll I'm curious to review it.
*00:08*
And like Lan was then alone and had no friends and his you know his um
*00:08*
I know there's a filter that you can turn on and off.
*00:08*
We're the only one we're playing both versions of is four because
*00:09*
Like before sledding.
*00:09*
Yeah.
*00:09*
Everything's expensive.
*00:09*
This world is cool.
*00:09*
Yeah, I have a Quest 2.
*00:09*
So we we have some numbers.
*00:09*
It's like enter your password.
*00:09*
Um
*00:09*
Okay.
*00:09*
Why can't I move and shoot?
*00:09*
Yeah, so really it's only four.
*00:09*
I'm not sure if they did it with X, but they did do it with the first
*00:09*
So there are people out here trying to
*00:09*
It's just
*00:09*
net.
*00:09*
We're in a pyramid.
*00:09*
Yeah.
*00:09*
There's not some contractual reason it can't
*00:09*
What happened at the end?
*00:09*
Like they've they're enhancing these games and making them
*00:09*
That's gonna be fascinating.
*00:09*
There's emulation on iOS that is
*00:09*
What would you say, you know?
*00:09*
And I'm like, I wanna play it both in third
*00:09*
Because clearly the RE engine is
*00:09*
I just hopefully that can be fixed.
*00:09*
You can have the font
*00:09*
And then I've put more money into like upscalers and playing them on modern displays because
*00:09*
So but how did you fall in love with RPGs?
*00:09*
Like I was going for the authentic.
*00:09*
I remember I was on a marching band trip
*00:09*
This is
*00:09*
Um with Tales of Vesperia was the the very first episode, so
*00:09*
And from there I just kinda
*00:09*
After defeating Alpha, Dor appears, there's a Scilab
*00:09*
It's just you could pour yourself into it.
*00:09*
Follow you online?
*00:09*
Scott joined us to talk about Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door
*00:09*
Oh my gosh.
*00:09*
I wish I had grabbed
*00:09*
Um
*00:09*
So that always is nice to see, at least in some manner.
*00:09*
Like it's really the best case scenario so far.
*00:09*
Sure.
*00:09*
It was
*00:09*
I think what was the final boss was duo.
*00:09*
Oh, this is cool.
*00:09*
I'm like, well, I'd rather play it in VR
*00:09*
I don't have means to get those off the carts yet.
*00:09*
Sure.
*00:09*
Um those started out as like we wear.
*00:09*
But I'm just gonna be curious to see what the trophies are gonna be like.
*00:09*
Scott, thank you so much.
*00:09*
It was in the teens somewhere.
*00:09*
This music is great but I can't get past this and so I stopped
*00:09*
They're supposed to be top tier phenomenal.
*00:09*
My most exposure actually is to Kingdom Hearts.
*00:09*
And then I went sledding and I guess I was okay.
*00:09*
So I never really went back to network transmission.
*00:09*
I think that will be
*00:09*
He had Mega Man Battle Network 4, Red
*00:10*
But you
*00:10*
I don't know.
*00:10*
And yeah, you have a kid, you want to get a house.
*00:10*
But what really sold me
*00:10*
I think you sh do you still have it?
*00:10*
Still still one of the biggest
*00:10*
And I've just
*00:10*
Well, and I look at
*00:10*
Yeah, I feel like every genre
*00:10*
How did you get into RPGs?
*00:10*
Trails, yes.
*00:10*
Oh okay.
*00:10*
That's that's my version.
*00:10*
And it's
*00:10*
So yeah.
*00:10*
So now
*00:10*
Like
*00:10*
It's
*00:10*
So
*00:10*
And it wasn't until
*00:10*
Um
*00:10*
Because I'm a little foggy on three
*00:10*
I'm like, yes, level passwords.
*00:10*
He is
*00:10*
Oh my gosh.
*00:10*
I didn't know about this.
*00:10*
What where can they go?
*00:10*
I remember
*00:10*
Yeah.
*00:10*
I'll happily do that.
*00:10*
Yep.
*00:10*
Uh
*00:10*
First release 2001.
*00:10*
And then that turns me to
*00:10*
I
*00:10*
Um my gosh, it's that is ten times
*00:10*
It's just
*00:10*
I I don't look for that in everything.
*00:10*
To help the message go through.
*00:10*
February 22nd, 2014.
*00:10*
Great soundtrack.
*00:10*
I had finally beaten this boss, it was so hard.
*00:10*
Okay.
*00:10*
That's what I'm doing.
*00:10*
I think the gear system in there is so bloated.
*00:11*
Any game does.
*00:11*
Okay.
*00:11*
I want
*00:11*
I I play Mega Man X.
*00:11*
Your fight I got to
*00:11*
And I should be like zipping through this.
*00:11*
Do it.
*00:11*
Like it's hand-drawn, really good looking
*00:11*
Alpha.
*00:11*
No no lie is this legacy collection.
*00:11*
But as I was a baby
*00:11*
Um I don't
*00:11*
So yeah.
*00:11*
I could
*00:11*
Yeah, they're not fun.
*00:11*
That is so cool.
*00:11*
At least try and get through one of them this year.
*00:11*
That's good.
*00:11*
Like
*00:11*
to be adaptable to.
*00:11*
I do remember
*00:11*
Hello, Scott, how are you?
*00:11*
Love the soundtrack in that in that.
*00:11*
Double dose.
*00:11*
That's what I did for
*00:11*
FPGA
*00:11*
I'm hoping for a physical version of Tunic.
*00:11*
You should keep it.
*00:11*
Please.
*00:11*
Yeah.
*00:11*
I have it.
*00:12*
I think that's had a bit of an impact.
*00:12*
It's
*00:12*
And so it's just always
*00:12*
I feel like
*00:12*
So
*00:12*
And
*00:12*
I love RPGs, but.
*00:12*
So
*00:12*
That's like the static electricity smell.
*00:12*
For uh for us, for me.
*00:12*
Um
*00:12*
Yeah.
*00:12*
But
*00:12*
It's literally show notes.
*00:12*
Just kind of that perfect
*00:12*
What a novel concept.
*00:12*
I would like to
*00:12*
But
*00:12*
Mm-hmm.
*00:12*
Uh it's like a
*00:12*
So
*00:12*
Um
*00:13*
I am
*00:13*
I
*00:13*
But
*00:13*
If you do it
*00:13*
Soundtrack's awesome.
*00:13*
Duo battle.
*00:13*
Whatever.
*00:13*
And it's just
*00:13*
It's
*00:13*
