Then I left Monday morning, came back Wednesday night, immediately recorded ATP. *00:00* But I hit the little airplane icon, I thought I was good to go, and immediately the headset was like, uh-uh, tracking has failed. *00:00* It's gonna be really, really cool. *00:00* And then my other share chapter select where we bounce through a series exploring its evolution, design, and legacy. *00:00* This is weird. *00:00* You're turning your teeth? *00:00* Um and I have that like draped over Declan if memory serves. *00:00* Thought it was it was absolutely adorable. *00:00* And so that's the thing. *00:00* I think she's still trying to figure that out. *00:00* Uh oh you know what I think it might be on the back porch. *00:00* D not only did I well here's the thing, God help me if Mike Hurley ever listens to this, but Mike has been, you know, ch he has been the probably lead cheerleader for the uh what was it, Plus Club originally and now it's you know Max Life or Max Club or what have you. *00:00* Yeah, we'll see what happens. *00:00* They weren't dive bombing, but you know what I mean? *00:00* But even I mean our drones are 249 grams. *00:00* And then it turns out that they were also a secret superhero. *00:00* So the son of a gun, I didn't know that yet. *00:00* Yes. *00:00* Uh between my my laptop, my iPad, and this thing, I was walking around with a really kind of embarrassing amount of technol technology on my back or in my backpack. *00:00* So I don't apparently, according to an Apple store employee, someone did walk in, try it, and then just buy it right there, which indicated to me there was enough stock in the back for them to *00:00* I think twenty five minutes worth it in this particular case. *00:00* And this has been talked about a lot, but you can go to the Avengers Tower and watch a movie or a show in Disney Plus. *00:00* Uh during the demo they had me watch or they have like a sizzle reel, if you will, of a bunch of immersive things. *00:00* There's she oh then there's Alicia Keyes as as m the aforementioned Mike Hurley has said to me. *00:00* necessarily and I get it's a sizzle reel that I would want to watch. *00:00* It's very hard to describe verbally, but I'm sure you can see a screenshot or per perhaps even look at a YouTube like you know review where you'll presumably see a 2D representation of it. *00:00* It might have been the Super Mario thing, I don't recall, but they had me there and you could see the reflection in the water on Mount Hood and it was very, very impressive. *00:00* Uh it's crazy they didn't make me play like a movie on a movie theater size screen, you know, in an environment because I feel like that would sell, you know, that's more leaning into the selling. *00:00* Uh I find it perfectly f serviceable and for the most part, for the most part, I don't really notice the comfort too much. *00:00* It's a you're gonna have to come to Richmond, unfortunately, but it is amazing. *00:00* Uh way one way or another. *00:00* suddenly you have a keyboard connected and so you can do use virtual control from your Mac to your Vision Pro and it rules. *00:00* Wegmans or whatever. *00:00* And I've reserved a couple of them over the next week or two so I can bring this to the library and try it out. *00:00* Put it on in the conference room and stare at the wall. *00:00* I think. *00:00* I mean, are do you have to put the headset? *00:00* It's it's almost one of the perfect apps, kind of out of the gate here, since it is such a media focused device. *00:00* I was like, man, Peekaview would kind of make sense, and the app icon does look like he's wearing a Vision Pro in the Peekaview thing. *00:00* Uh you can find me on Mastodon, is all you need to say. *00:00* and Castlevania. *00:00* Mm, that did not change. *00:00* That's not at all very flat. *00:00* Or maybe it's not Joshua Tree, maybe it's um which one is the other one? *00:00* Yes. *00:00* Um, but once she could be more explicit about, you know, this is what I'm seeking or what I what what need I want fulfilled, that did make everything quite a bit easier. *00:00* you know, all of your children are out of toddlerhood. *00:00* Uh Declan Declan is nine, Michaela is six, and um and so when Michaela was super little, uh she would get very frustrated when we wouldn't understand what she wanted. *00:00* being able to verbalize, you know, I want a ball or, you know, I'm hungry or whatever. *00:00* Uh it it the the the trend line is one hundred percent toward easier. *00:00* I have visions of Declan in his high chair, which seems like a different life at this point. *00:00* Uh it was the funniest thing. *00:00* And we finally like got the routine down. *00:00* And you and I were discussing before we were started recording that, you know, uh well Declan now has like an out of service in every sense of the word iPhone that he uses for like a sleep um white noise machine and as his clock, his bedside clock, and he'll just, you know, look *00:00* and see, okay, it's after seven, I can get out of bed. *00:00* And maybe thrice they've let us sleep in past seven. *00:00* Um which is crazy. *00:00* Uh not to obsect you, but you are within a reasonable distance of the Orl Orlando area, and so you said, look, I'll I'll *00:00* You also got our kids' gifts, which was absolutely out of bounds and unfortunately. *00:00* She uh you guys even watched her for a bit while we rode Dinosaur. *00:00* I want to say it was in the Jupiter area, but I might have that wrong. *00:00* And drove to Disney and did like two or three nights in Disney. *00:00* That he you know his white noise that he's used to hearing. *00:00* of Animal Kingdom, I mean not even five minutes after meeting for the very first time, someone walks by and was like *00:00* To have somebody recognize the shirt and maybe to your point, maybe it's just they put together what the chip part of it was and they had no idea that it's an ATP shirt. *00:00* I both should have and shouldn't have done that because I was let go from my job like a month later and was like, ooh, I probably shouldn't have spent this much money. *00:00* If it came and went and it was no longer just a sixteen pro max, it was also available in the sixteen pro, would I go back to a sixteen pro *00:00* The battery life hasn't been as earth-shatteringly good slash better as I was led to believe. *00:00* You really want to have as big a phone or as big as Zoom, you know, as big a throw or whatever as you can. *00:00* There's a rooster just like doesn't understand that the sun is already up. *00:00* Well, I'm a pilot. *00:00* Well, that's not built into the drones that you and I have, and it's only in certain up to basically sit or certain iterations going forward. *00:00* So there's all this and that also broadcasts your position, like where you are personally. *00:00* just have to follow certain rules in the air. *00:00* would bring, whatever they drive, you know, it can be a piece of junk or it could be something nice, and they would go to a parking lot. *00:00* You know what I mean? *00:00* Um, it's more when you start making money off of it. *00:00* Again. *00:00* 250 grams falling from 400 feet or thereabouts, that's that would hurt. *00:00* Fly safe. *00:00* You know, I'm looking at charts and like, oh my gosh, am I a pilot? *00:00* for the beginning, which was film lookup, put it together, you got flook up. *00:00* stuff right there right in front of you, uh which I'm really I really like that feature. *00:00* Um it I definitely recommend checking it out on the iOS App Store. *00:00* Or you can choose to pay me more if you want to be super awesome. *00:00* I think it was right before the world ended, if memory serves, so it was like the end of twenty nineteen. *00:00* If you're someone like me who takes animated gifts very seriously, uh, you know, GifWrapp lets you build a repository of your favorite reaction gifts and you know send them very easily and so on and so forth. *00:00* on a show that you maybe you're really invested in and Watchmen is worth your time. *00:00* And then uh my other friend Ste Graner, who is uh local, uh Jelly is Australian, uh so it's very not local, but Steve is local and uh he did a bunch of alternative i app icons that if you pay up. *00:00* Because I'm an idiot and we can explore that if you're interested, Max. *00:00* But I'm curious first, because I just don't know the answer for you, what is your history with VR or AR? *00:00* I did spend about a minute in it, I don't know, a few months ago, and it was cool and impressive. *00:00* I that's about the extent of it to the best of my recollection. *00:00* That's the ex the extent of my VR experience. *00:00* in in a little while. *00:00* I have used one very, very briefly, and I remember it being neat. *00:00* killed a product. *00:00* And then I have a PSVR two that I bought last year. *00:00* experience. *00:00* I I wanna did has Aaron tried it? *00:00* Uh I suspect she will in the next few days. *00:00* I think there's a few things. *00:00* And there's one other one I'm forgetting what it is now. *00:00* The three D video on it, um, now there there's two different flavors of what I what I think you can broadly classify as three D video. *00:00* The Avengers, which has been remastered for 3D, or some video you know, some movies like Avatar were filmed in three D. *00:00* Because you're not really losing fidelity like you do in a theater. *00:00* Doing a h like a tightrope walk high up in in a fjord or on a f you know in a fjord in in Norway or Sweden or what have you. *00:00* There there's not a rectangular viewport like the movie, the like like Welconda Forever had. *00:00* Maybe not 360 degree, but like, you know, at least 180 degree capture of what is happening at that moment, presumably with you know bespoken special 3D cameras and so on and so forth, or immersive cameras. *00:00* Having have an in-car view, but be able to look around. *00:00* of showing you everyone's cars and then you can see telemetry, you can see where the cars are on the track. *00:00* It was hard to hear, not because the the pods or whatever don't sound good, but I'm in an Apple store and it's just loud in there. *00:00* I think faster than an average consumer might. *00:00* But Abby told me they also have a a script, essentially a teleprompter that they are reading to the case. *00:00* 2D to 3D with a movies anywhere purchase or movies everywhere purchase, whatever it's called, or you have to like remove it and re-add it or something. *00:00* this 3D video and I can rem I can imagine how amazing that will be to look back on. *00:00* when it's your own family. *00:00* Cause she takes way more pictures of Eloise. *00:00* screen like I can see you still but to them it looks like I can't see them because I'm wearing a headset right and that I don't want to be that guy at a party and I don't think you do either or I don't think most people want to be that person *00:00* the better off we'll be. *00:00* in their Pixar animated universe. *00:00* And you could have some probably white noise of the water, kind of like that whooshy sound. *00:00* And and so being able to do that is neat, but then you can also, if you want to, if you're especially if you're stationary, you can just go to Mount Hood or you can go to whatever that place is in Hawaii, or you can go to the moon if you want. *00:00* I think only one person really did a double take and but didn't didn't like stop walking past me. *00:00* Yeah, I probably would have stopped. *00:00* They actually switch locomotives because down here in Virginia it's all diesel. *00:00* The screen is staying put as I'm moving forward. *00:00* What is this icon next to the airplane? *00:00* And so I turned on travel mode and wouldn't you know, Max, it actually worked pretty well after that. *00:00* But what we one of the things we haven't talked about yet and they don't show you in the demo is Mac Virtual Display. *00:00* And I got the 14-inch deliberately because I do carry it often enough that I didn't want like a 16-inch behemoth. *00:00* I actually used it for a fair bit on the ride home. *00:00* MacBook Pro, and it would be nice to have more. *00:00* Uh that is not terribly reliable, but one of the options in Control Center is a Mac virtual display button that you can hit and in then it'll show you the Macs that are presumably connected to the same iCloud account that are nearby. *00:00* And you can connect to one or I believe more of them. *00:00* Does that make sense? *00:00* And go, well wouldn't wouldn't you look at that? *00:00* in the demo space. *00:00* It's like if you're looking at a Slack window, for example, in the upper left there's an icon for the particular work group you're in, and you have to tap or click that or what have you in order to switch to a different workspace. *00:00* or work group, whatever they call it. *00:00* I feel like I sound like I'm complaining a lot and I don't mean to. *00:00* It's like, well, how are we gonna, you know, how would you zoom in on a picture or zoom in on a map here on the iPhone? *00:00* Unless you which I have done, but I haven't even opened the box yet because I'm hopeful as I do spend some time getting more experience with this, because I've only done it for a second. *00:00* It has a similar looking thing, but it's a dongle that's a USB-C receptacle. *00:00* And again, I haven't really done I haven't even opened the box for the developer strap, as they call it. *00:00* Done I did a fair bit at the lab and I have a branch where I've worked on a lot of this, but that branch is now three months out of date or whatever it is, so I gotta bring that branch back up to the latest and greatest. *00:00* you'll still be able to look it up and it be right there. *00:00* Part of the reason why this wasn't already done, leaving aside the fact that I had other things to work on for call sheet, but the simulator is not stupendous for the Vision Pro. *00:00* But I gotta look into it. *00:00* Yes. *00:00* something. *00:00* Uh it you're exactly right. *00:00* Very cool. *00:00* If you ever come back well, I mean when you come back down here, just bring the Vision Pro. *00:00* Apple Vision Pro. *00:00* There's your and you can see the hand tracking. *00:00* on the Mac side. *00:00* Oh weird. *00:00* Nope, there's a woodpecker in the distance. *00:00* With this not on, bad things happen. *00:00* And then this is your control center, but you get to it the same space that blob is, right? *00:00* Um she's the best and now she's running around and it's kinda cool, but also she's throwing a lot of tantrums now. *00:00* She would get very frustrated. *00:00* You know, then she's a real person at this point and yes, she has opinions, but we can talk to her about it like a person, you know, it's n rather than no, you may not have your seventy-fifth MM, you know, th that's too much. *00:00* Um, unfortunately though, that coincides with them being mobile, as you mentioned, and so you can't just plop them somewhere and expect them to not move and then they start to become daredevils and they wanna climb all the things and throw all the things and so it's it's a double edged sword, you know. *00:00* I d uh yeah, I I've I'm not under the illusion that it will magically all become a piece of cake, but I am looking forward to her being able to speak in at least some form. *00:00* of a sentence instead of just mama dad and you know sign language for more. *00:00* B, B, 'cause B was bread. *00:00* You know, it's like just a half hour earlier than we would prefer. *00:00* So going to bed and staying asleep, all pretty solid. *00:00* It was phenomenal. *00:00* I especially because what what we haven't said yet is that we met at Disney World because um the for for Michaela's fifth birthday, which was just over a year ago now. *00:00* I'll meet you, you tell me what day you tell me where you'll be and I'll figure it out. *00:00* So it was very kind of you and uh we had a really good time together and it was only that one day, but it was a day in Animal Kingdom that I really enjoyed. *00:00* a baby that's stuck to a stroller than one that can't does have the ability to walk around because we went a few months ago now, I think like October, November. *00:00* And now she's she's basically done with milk in all facets. *00:00* Quite a bit. *00:00* I figured it would be easy to find me, like out of a crowd. *00:00* Because then, you know, she has uh ammunition to make fun of me for a while. *00:00* I mean besides just drinking milk normally, you know, like a good things. *00:00* If I were able to the reason I got it was for the 5X Zoom because, you know, once you have kids, particularly kids in school, doing school things and plays and things like that. *00:00* probably two iterations of the iPhone. *00:00* uh small unmanned aircraft certification with the FAA. *00:00* you know, airspace information in it. *00:00* rules like how close to the clouds you're allowed to fly. *00:00* For example, I watch anything Casey Neistat does. *00:00* is like a license plate for drones. *00:00* So would you recommend it for someone who isn't looking to make like the reason I wanted to get a 107 was just because my understanding is the FAA strictly speaking is *00:00* within their rights to like yell at me for things I post on Instagram. *00:00* I think it is within their right to get angry at me, even though the likelihood of it is almost nil. *00:00* That was my thought was, you know, why don't I do this on the up and up? *00:00* flying it as a hobbyist, which is what you primarily are doing. *00:00* And that's purely for work. *00:00* Space. *00:00* Um, but like if I was riding my bike at the park, you can't fly your drone over me and follow me on the bike. *00:00* sights scattered all over the place. *00:00* Um, there's no pop-ups, there's no, you know, hey, would you log in? *00:00* And then if you'd like the app, which you will because it's great, then you'll pay either a dollar a month or I believe it's nine dollars a year. *00:00* the names of cast members or the the sorry, the characters' names on when I'm looking at a TV show. *00:00* these actors were in. *00:00* Um you can you can choose to hide thumbnails, you can choose to hide episode titles. *00:00* then you can choose between those. *00:00* And one of the things I'm a little worried about is that platform uh tends to want complete circle icons and the clapper board is not gonna look great as a circle, so I gotta fit and work with Jelly and figure out, you know, how can we make this *00:00* Anything else, or do you want me to just dive in and start talking about it? *00:00* It is. *00:00* the uh which is called analog and uh I surprised him in New York. *00:00* It was a mess. *00:00* used quite a bit of VR. *00:00* They stopped selling the Google Glass just last year. *00:00* 2016. *00:00* We've come a we've come a long long way from all that stuff. *00:00* You could only schedule a demo opening weekend in person. *00:00* Oh wow. *00:00* And I talked to them for a little bit and they're apparently a developer research type work. *00:00* Ready to drop $4,000. *00:00* Yes, I think so. *00:00* It's a it's it's an absolutely absurd amount of money, and I did it because of my job, and I with without question, I will enjoy using this in many ways that are not my job. *00:00* It seemed it seemed irresponsible, as as silly as that sounds. *00:00* Um, they were very impressed by it. *00:00* What will probably sell her on it to a degree, not to the point of like, oh, I would like one for myself, please. *00:00* do anything you want in the scare floor or what have you. *00:00* The immersive video is definitely the highest quality immersive type video that I've ever seen. *00:00* They've got some sort of deal. *00:00* Uh so I dug that out and for the first time ever put in a 3D Blu-ray. *00:00* We gotta get back as you know, please go back. *00:00* when you go off script, they d obviously don't know what to do I mean they know what to do. *00:00* please. *00:00* And I was a reasonably devout user of Movies Anywhere, where you know you get a code when you buy a physical disc and you engage you enable that in Movies Anywhere and then Movies Anywhere. *00:00* Let's you like watch these in iTunes and other things like that. *00:00* Um there was something odd about that, and for the life of me I can't remember the specifics, but I don't think I have very many 3D movies in my collection in in a in Apple's movie app. *00:00* despite having a you know m moderate sized collection in general. *00:00* I actually think are very similar. *00:00* And so I've been taking spatial video kind of ever since then. *00:00* Yeah. *00:00* is I think fairly pronounced over time, especially as you see things go on. *00:00* one thing at a time. *00:00* technology and toys. *00:00* It was either already set to or they had me set it to dark and then they had me play something on it. *00:00* had several hours with the device. *00:00* In a really cool like, you know, I have the Apple TV set to all the water screensavers. *00:00* the time when I leave it on. *00:00* you know, video player in the Vision Pro. *00:00* And so he had the screen in the center where people would stand. *00:00* Uh I had you know put the Vision Pro on and I thought, all right, well everyone says that this is an airplane only thing. *00:00* And I thought I did that because I went into control center and there's a little airplane icon for airplane mode, you know. *00:00* All right, fine. *00:00* Uh if you've seen the Casey Neistat review, it's uh very similar to what he had happen um when he was on a subway. *00:00* Um I actually haven't even opened the dual band because for the amount of time I've spent using this thing, the backband, the solo whatever, is actually just fine in my case. *00:00* in the Vision OS world. *00:00* And suddenly you have this completely spatial workspace. *00:00* Like you're gonna move your head to look between your computer screen and the messages window floating off to the side, and then move it again to move to the Slack window on the other side *00:00* Which for me I don't find that bothersome, but in talking on ATP about it, my co-host John seemed very bothered by that, which is fair. *00:00* Through the edge of your Mac and onto the iPad. *00:00* But if there was somebody sitting next to me, they could see exactly what's going on on the screen. *00:00* And it was phenomenal. *00:00* through a weird circumstance uh a series of weird events. *00:00* But it worked super well. *00:00* And actually I I didn't realize that that was still on at one point and I was like, why does my mouse keep disappearing? *00:00* But as it is today, it's more than serviceable. *00:00* is the fact that text entry freaking sucks. *00:00* But yeah, it it is it is extremely extremely cool and I cannot say enough good things about it. *00:00* You really are strapping a Mac to your face. *00:00* it can get a little bit squirrely depending on whether or not the third party stuff is as robustly supportive of you t or of of um Bluetooth stuff, you know, in and I don't know the specifics, but apparently it gets a little bit squirrely. *00:00* Um which I guess Or come to Richmond or come to Richmond and then do all the stuff on Casey's laptop. *00:00* Uh, it is absolute wizardry, I feel like. *00:00* the menus and things are kind of off to the left, like they would be maybe in an iPad app or certain Mac apps. *00:00* I believe they're called ornaments, uh off to the side, the top or the bottom. *00:00* just moving very rapidly because I'm trying to soak all this in, right? *00:00* Magical as I think it is. *00:00* Um again, I I'm not saying this is a Vision Pro issue. *00:00* It's a little bit tougher with iPad native apps, you know, like Slack, for example, because it seems like those *00:00* Touch targets, if you will, the the the buttons and whatnot. *00:00* But when it doesn't work, that's when I think that magic, that illusion comes down. *00:00* Yeah. *00:00* And but you now have an Apple Vision Pro in your home, you're working on call sheet for it. *00:00* Doesn't have any means by which you get the builds of your app onto it other than Wi Fi and Unless you pay three hundred dollars *00:00* uh air pod and and associated band piece that that the airpod is on or the I'm sorry not airpod airpod and the the piece that it's on. *00:00* glanced off the outer atmosphere developing for this thing so far, but my hope is that I'll just end up returning the developer strap in that Wi-Fi is sufficient, but we'll see what happens. *00:00* in the Vision Pro, especially as a media consumption device. *00:00* Vision OS version of this. *00:00* with some affordances to just make it feel a little more at home on Vision OS. *00:00* Being like, well, look at this. *00:00* Select peak a view, and then they could view only the photos, and you would have the confidence that they're only viewing the photos you allow. *00:00* You know, and then uh masquerade. *00:00* You can search uh Anthony Hopkins and see, and I don't know who else is in it. *00:00* Given how expensive Disney is that's been it's getting a little ridiculous down here. *00:00* Uh the Accidental Tech Podcast, him, Marco Armit, John Cyracusa talk about all sorts of stuff every week, every Thursday, uh live on Wednesday night. *00:00* Yeah, that'll actually you can imagine that like a mind map 3D space. *00:00* Yep, yep, and it actually will run on a Mac. *00:00* Alright, so hold on. *00:00* I can uh how do I do this? *00:00* Coming from over there. *00:00* Also, for I don't know if you happen to have listened to ATP or not, but these two icons that I'm looking at, the airplane and this guy, keep those in mind because that'll probably be relevant later. *00:00* I'm about halfway through the episode. *00:00* I'm an idiot. *00:00* I I watch Casey Neistat's video and the subway leaves. *00:00* There we go. *00:00* It pulled it in from the screen share. *00:00* In my experience so far, all of parenting. *00:00* With with Declan in particular, he was obsessed with bread to eat to eat, you know, when he was a kid, just any kind of bread, all that's all he cared about. *00:00* is little like toddler baby declan doing the sign for more, which the way we taught it, and perhaps this isn't correct, but if you like, if you're looking at your hands, at your palms, and you bring your fingers together. *00:00* And you know, you've survived almost two years, so that's also incredible and worth the return to a normal. *00:00* Um, i it was the most wonderful way to arrange a rendezvous with someone at all, but particularly someone that, you know, we had spoken several times but hadn't met. *00:00* At Disney World. *00:00* Uh you know, it's funny you say that when Aaron and I had a friend's a dear friend's wedding that was not in the Orlando area but was in Florida. *00:00* And that's fine, but that's not how we handled it. *00:00* The um hall of presence, is that right, in Magic Kingdom? *00:00* What is my life? *00:00* And then uh I did the not normal thing for me and upgraded the following year. *00:00* Yep, it was amazing. *00:00* But it's it's it was the M1 Max Max variant the because of my name and I just like you really gotta know the chip if you're if it if it's spelled out that way. *00:00* It was so weird. *00:00* I did the unthinkable. *00:00* Uh but that that extra lens, that 5x lens, is what really brought me to it on the 15 Pro. *00:00* Um, and not only that, but he is a devout pop socket person. *00:00* either feels like it feels like it weighs it the same, if not more, than the fifteen Pro Max. *00:00* uh the recommendation the recommended course that seems to be the hotness is the pilot institute one. *00:00* drones and fixed wing aircraft like model planes that are fly like model planes. *00:00* Planes work and fly and all of this stuff, but it covers everything from weather conditions, map readings, reading charts with *00:00* But I I it's a lot. *00:00* But it's it falls under that would fall under the hobbyist branch, which then exempts you from a lot of these rules. *00:00* at least to our public knowledge, hasn't been find out the wazoo for the stuff that he's doing with drones in New York and all over the place. *00:00* these rules are and it feels like I I've learned that I have a I think we both have the same I have a mini two the *00:00* Like if you fly that and you're a Part 107, you know, certified whatever, it's illegal and you have to put on you basically have to attach a beacon to it that then broadcasts this signal and that beacon has to be registered with the FAA. *00:00* I can fly a drone now. *00:00* He is making money off of all of his drone shots in one way or another because it's his part of his product. *00:00* I mean, it again, it comes down to the person flying the thing is really what it's ultimately comes down to. *00:00* And I would never do that. *00:00* It is. *00:00* I don't know about that. *00:00* Just basically stay away from people directly above them for more than just passing over them and you should be good. *00:00* But you know, I may have a a license to uh for work th you know, theoretically, but you actually did a thing, released a thing *00:00* Hmm. *00:00* Um, you know, it shows all the the actors and and as you're scrolling through the list, it'll say what their ages were at the time of release. *00:00* And we m we meet Dr. *00:00* Um it's all just straightforward, fast, and I like to think, you know, clever in a handful of ways. *00:00* Uh what I call spoiler protection, which is to say, um, in the canonical example of this that I've said several times in the past is that when Watchmen, the the miniseries came out *00:00* So I was watching the show, and at the time, you know, Call She wasn't a thing, and so I looked at IMDB, and one of the one of the people on the show was credited as, you know, s so-and-so, the character I was familiar with, slash Dr. *00:00* A plus work KC. *00:00* So on and so forth. *00:00* fit in a circular world. *00:00* a minute in a MetaQuest II, which has since been bequeathed to me because the owner of the MetaQuest II uh has now gotten them the either the three or the three pro. *00:00* building and we were going through the atrium and they had just had this vibe set up there where you could just do a demo and so I stood there and there was a whale that swam by me and all *00:00* I used to work in a company that did a lot of VR training and things like that with haptic feedback gloves and all this sort of stuff. *00:00* But then Abby went with me and they they offered her a demo too, like a just a walk-in at that point. *00:00* where you're using it, which is in your home or on a train, generally by yourself, but instead be into a loud Apple store that's very busy and full of people not only trying the Vision Pro, but also buying iPhones and Macs and *00:00* She's really hung up on the cost, and I'm not even trying to buy one. *00:00* You're still getting a rectangular viewport. *00:00* I want this for everything, especially for sports. *00:00* of um of what a what a F1 app could look like where you're seeing the track in 3D. *00:00* Okay, that's cool. *00:00* a video game in the way of you are in the video. *00:00* Yeah I did see that when I did the m when I did my pickup. *00:00* James Cameron is very passionate about it and cares about the 3D impact and effect, and it's really good. *00:00* A virtual you know, a video. *00:00* The glasses just naturally dim the picture and it doesn't look as bright or as vibrant, but in the Vision Pro, everything is at that color. *00:00* the typical color space, but it still looks great and you don't get that dimming effect. *00:00* And that has the same advantage of the Vision Pro of not dimming it because you're not wearing glasses. *00:00* But the resolution was so much lower than the, you know, more than 4k pixels per eye or whatever that the Apple Vision Pro has. *00:00* It looked a little grainy. *00:00* And they were like, please go back and we need you to, you know, because the Apple store employee has an iPad mini that can see what you see. *00:00* And I've just with the device itself being so personal, I just wish I could do things on it my stuff. *00:00* Because the guest mode is offering you up to, you know, this is all of Casey's apps and Casey's photos. *00:00* Well, I'm just looking at pictures of Casey's family, or I'm this is Casey's movie, you know. *00:00* Uh spatial video stuff. *00:00* But um what it lets you do is take, you know, a a 3D movie of what's happening in front of you. *00:00* Even though the presentation's a little bit weird, you get kind of a squarish viewport and it just kind of like bleeds colors out of the outside. *00:00* It is really freaking powerful. *00:00* And that's not like, oh my God, I'm gonna cry every time I see this kind of powerful, but it's still like, oh my word. *00:00* But the the feeling of presence you get from the panoramas and spatial video is astonishing. *00:00* having like a birthday or Christmas or Hanukkah or something or or some other big life event being filmed in this spatial video as Apple calls it. *00:00* Because it was r the beta came out right before that trip to Disney, the second one. *00:00* Charger plugged into it and I had it uh film Christmas this year in spatial. *00:00* I'm building the collection almost kind of like panoramas on the iPhone. *00:00* you know, however many years later, ten years later I guess. *00:00* you know, coming down from 4K 60 Dolby Vision to that is a huge downgrade in quality. *00:00* how cool that is and how impressive it is. *00:00* Uh error, if you will, on the side of not making them spatial. *00:00* I think that's going to be incredibly powerful and I'm going to be real thankful for it. *00:00* was able to do this or, you know, someday I imagine we'll be able to take those 3D type stills as well that the Vision Pro can do, but the phone can't do. *00:00* Soon to the other fields. *00:00* And so it was nice to like go away from that. *00:00* They didn't I was kind of surprised they didn't have you play a movie in one of these environments. *00:00* a little surprised at that, especially since that's like one of the big commercials and product features is like being able to watch movie I mean they're it's being heavily pitched as a media device, which totally makes sense given what it can do. *00:00* Unlike watch faces, I do think that could be a possibility because I sure hope so. *00:00* Or Disney Plus, like you mentioned before, the four different environment like the tech is there and is clearly being encouraged. *00:00* doing your work on, you know, the scare floor. *00:00* you know, which gets into a weird legal area, I suppose, and what they're comfortable with or not. *00:00* That was really cool. *00:00* exceptionally nice on the train, uh, which maybe we should talk about that in a second, but uh I didn't do a lot of it because I wanted to see for the purposes of the podcast, you know, how many people are looking at me like I'm a crazy person. *00:00* Um, but if you'll permit me, I'd I would like to retell my train story, which I thought was very funny, uh, which b the moral, the the punchline of the story is I'm an idiot. *00:00* And I thought, all right, maybe if we start stationary, maybe it'll do a better job of understanding um, you know, what's going on as I take off. *00:00* And sure enough, you know, I'm watching the movie, I'm having a time in my life, and the train starts to leave, and suddenly *00:00* Um and that was a bummer, so I barely used it on the train on the way up. *00:00* those windows are locked into place. *00:00* Windows would jiggle a little bit here and there. *00:00* I mean, it was so much better than the screen just flying through my body, you know, as or me flying through the screen, strictly speaking. *00:00* And leaving aside the social stigma of having this ridiculous contraption on your face, you can suck in your max display as a 4K display *00:00* Um, but it was amazing and it works extremely well. *00:00* is what if universal control works? *00:00* And we use an app called Banktivity in order to like track our finances and whatnot. *00:00* And so I balance the checkbook on a 4K screen, hurtling down the the train tracks at, you know, 110 miles an hour or whatever the case may be *00:00* my physical keyboard that's on my or you know connected to or literally on my MacBook Pro and I can type in the Vision OS native Slack. *00:00* Or you can do the same hunting and pecking, but with your eyeballs and by pinching, you know, the same way you would control anything else. *00:00* with your mouse and keyboard, whatever mouse and keyboard you have, as long as it's connected to your Mac. *00:00* Is in the PlayStation VR two and I think it's in one of the quests. *00:00* Strictly speaking, that wasn't actually accurate. *00:00* But I suspect what's happening is I'm just ever so slightly tweaking the positioning on my face. *00:00* And because of that, I think it's throwing the eye tracking off somewhat regularly. *00:00* It works phenomenally well and it's instant. *00:00* that it's just some oddity about how I'm putting this on or something like that. *00:00* And I think that if and when there's a Vision OS, truly Vision OS native Slack rather than the iPad app running in on Vision OS. *00:00* I suspect one of the things they'll do is maybe space those out a little bit or something in order to make it a little bit easier for the eye tracking to work. *00:00* It's just it it's not 100%. *00:00* And so, but that works. *00:00* your eyeballs which are moving constantly. *00:00* Um, you know, it maybe I'll find that Wi-Fi is sufficient and I don't need the $300 developer strap. *00:00* But I I do need to, again, I've just been so busy traveling and everything. *00:00* And, you know, start doing this all over again. *00:00* Now you can't obviously do like the X ray thing that Amazon does integrate it into Prime, but that that just doesn't work. *00:00* And it's much nicer to develop on the device. *00:00* Out of the gate, I mean, I remember when Call Sheet came out, it was uh it was featured in the app store. *00:00* About uh the Apple Vision Pro. *00:00* Yeah. *00:00* So in line with that feature, I think you should implement an Easter egg or some sort of thing where it's just six degrees of Kevin Bacon. *00:00* Yeah, the the the conclusion I've come to is Casey Liss on mastodon. *00:00* It sucks. *00:00* Hopefully now you can see what I'm seeing. *00:00* I hear you. *00:00* Alright, so then hopefully you can see me. *00:00* Uh Joshua Tree, I believe. *00:00* Oh really? *00:00* It starts to glow in you. *00:00* Well, sort of, so let me cancel that. *00:00* Yes, but some f you don't let me go back to it. *00:00* um airplane mode, didn't even think twice about it, only to then realize on the return trip back from New York, wait a second, what the hell is this thing? *00:00* Yeah, so it's better and worse. *00:00* Almost like you're trying to like, I don't know, maybe milk the world's smallest cow. *00:00* No, this is a mistake. *00:00* Which is just chef's kiss the correct way to make this happen. *00:00* generating uh I can't think of the word I'm looking for, but the inciting, there we go. *00:00* And uh that was quite the experience now that she can walk and has a tighter schedule and, you know, naps and all these things. *00:00* was paramount and you do not screw with the sleep schedule. *00:00* M1, whatever chip it is, I think it was the Ultra. *00:00* And then also the titanium introduction this year I think makes the max uh more or easier to swallow. *00:00* Yes. *00:00* down obstacle avoidance. *00:00* Pull these apps up and see where people are. *00:00* make money off of it. *00:00* And so we wanted obviously to be compliant with the FAA in that way and just be on the up and up, like you said. *00:00* And people aren't in your pictures either. *00:00* I think you're all you're gonna be safe and all good. *00:00* But I I it's gonna hurt. *00:00* Uh that was done by my dear friend Jelly, who you would pret perhaps know as the author of the iPhone app, uh uh Gif Rapped, which is *00:00* This is what I think I want the app the app icon to look like, and I gave a truly heinous and hideous rendition of the app icon to him. *00:00* I I feel safe in New York for the most part, but it was of dubious uh it was a dubious choice to to bring all of this through the streets of Manhattan. *00:00* in the early, early, early nineties, like ninety, ninety one, ninety two, somewhere in that neck of the woods. *00:00* And we did do a VR thing with my friends and the headset that you put on weighed eight hundred thousand pounds and you had to stand in like a little podium or uh on a little platform that had like a railing all around it in a circle because they didn't want you to walk around with it. *00:00* I did not know that. *00:00* They didn't have a ps is they didn't really share with me a specific vision for what they were going to develop with it. *00:00* all the other stuff that people buy at an Apple store. *00:00* So I'm not interested in trying it, which I think is an interesting perspective because it keeps me away from it. *00:00* But the reason I got it is because my job is to not only write things like Call Sheet, but to talk about things like the Vision Pro and so *00:00* That's why I did it. *00:00* The 3D movies, now for at the store, it was like a 20-30 second clip of the Super Mario Brothers movie. *00:00* I would love to hear your thoughts in a moment, but for me, I saw this and was like, holy crap! *00:00* Seems fine on movies. *00:00* I would like to watch more than a 30-second clip in a store, and I think that's like the detriment of the store is *00:00* It's all scripted and it's all at a clip and you have no control really over this space you're in. *00:00* Personal. *00:00* my stuff and maybe that works more for say a partner, but you know, because you have the same shared photos or anything like that. *00:00* Any movies that have 3D versions now on the Apple TV store and you've purchased them get added to your library at no additional cost, which I was really hoping for. *00:00* And I unfamiliar with the sensitivity of a gesture, I like swiped through hundreds of photos and you know across the reel at the bottom. *00:00* Because that just seems to be the right thing to do. *00:00* Seeing your family members in full 3D is really freaking powerful. *00:00* Which is a very bold strategy to put a beta on your phone right before you go to a theme park all day. *00:00* And I think it'll require a redesign of the camera mesa, as it were, over time. *00:00* Like, just to have that capability come 'cause I I also don't want to be the dad as much as I love playing with *00:00* And so getting this technology to the phone feels vital to me. *00:00* Um do you uh you did get to experience like the immersive stuff, like the the immersive envi environments like Mount Hood and whatnot, right? *00:00* Uh, but I was a little surprised. *00:00* And allegedly this is specifically for airplanes, it's not really meant for anything else. *00:00* Have you done this at all with with Macs and iPads or anything? *00:00* Yeah, that I'm excited to try that. *00:00* Selecting text and things like that. *00:00* And so I think that extends to, well, if I want to look at something and uh and pick it, I I look at it and then pinch my fingers or whatever. *00:00* And then you replace that with one that has another ear pod on it, which I think part of the reason it's so darn expensive. *00:00* Easter egg request, feature request for call sheet. *00:00* As we've compared our face shield size. *00:00* You are at Casey Liss on Instagram, caseylis. *00:00* Uh uh maybe that is that what your back porch looks like? *00:00* Oh my gosh. *00:00* We are we're in the future now. *00:00* Because uh you did exactly the correct thing and you basically said tell me where you'll be and when and I will figure it out *00:00* And everyone was extremely compliant. *00:00* But I'm glad because of some of the features that tie into the Apple Vision Pro, but Casey, you you upgraded as well per your job essentially, but you you got the big phone. *00:00* So the the course is prepared because the test is obviously designed by the FAA and it can cover *00:00* Anyway, I took this course and uh by God I know how to fly a plane, that's for sure. *00:00* I d I do I assume you have to get a radio thing still, but again, I think like Casey Neistat obviously is more of a focus for the FAA than Casey Liss. *00:00* Which has just a treasure trove of information. *00:00* You can, you should. *00:00* So when I was like ten, I begged my parents to do a VR birthday party. *00:00* That was my first time with VR and that was like probably roughly 2015. *00:00* VR demo games things where you would fly on a carpet. *00:00* that they were entering this space, I'm obviously super jazzed because it's a thing that I've been, you know, preaching from the shouting from the rooftops. *00:00* A bigger rush. *00:00* So I don't think it was as big of a rush as they anticipated. *00:00* But anyway, I did do the demo. *00:00* buy one if they're even into it. *00:00* I think though, so we did have some friends over, uh one of one of whom is like a super Apple nerd, and they wanted to try it, and Aaron was like, yeah, yeah, go ahead, you know, I'll try it another time. *00:00* Oh my gosh, I want this in my life. *00:00* The animal stuff, though, I found extremely compelling. *00:00* That type of stuff, National Geographic documentaries, I could you imagine an animal documentary, a planet Earth style documentary filmed this way? *00:00* Wow, how cool is this picture? *00:00* And so I'm I really what I want is to spend an hour with it in my own environment, but that's just not possible unless you buy the thing. *00:00* Oh. *00:00* Yeah, this is as soon as it became a feature on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max to shoot spatial video. *00:00* These videos, I'm like I remember we have uh some of Eloise's first steps in like I'm just I'm thinking dad mode constantly. *00:00* We'll all be able to look at the same picture at the same time with our tiny little Apple Vision glasses that we'll have someday instead of it being so isolating with one person looking at *00:00* I get that I can see other people, but they even with the admittedly worse than I expected seeming eyesight feature. *00:00* be strangely transported back into this, I think is going to be profound. *00:00* But it's just not in the system level yet. *00:00* The ability to bring my computer into this other computer, but then use that computer's apps to around the other ones, I just think would be a really neat way to work in an office space. *00:00* gosh, whatever kind of keyboard you need, I suppose. *00:00* w it appears that it's fairly sensitive to how you've put the Vision Pro on your head, and it tries to remember the calibration settings from the last time you've used the Vision Pro. *00:00* But every once in a while I find I need to go into settings and like re-jigger the the tracking, like do the same dot circle dance thing and reset it. *00:00* prior to working on this, but I just got the the last one out the door yesterday, morning. *00:00* That would be crazy. *00:00* Weird, right? *00:00* So now I'm somewhere else, baby. *00:00* Yep. *00:00* three three ish months. *00:00* You can't fly over moving vehicles. *00:00* Who were you know, what were they in? *00:00* I think it was the three. *00:00* Um that I I've played quite a bit with. *00:00* And so yeah, I was able to do a demo. *00:00* Uh 573 look at it harder, which is great. *00:00* assemble one on the spot. *00:00* And oh my word, that stuff is freaking nuts. *00:00* But to kind of remind myself of where we came from, I actually to prepare for the show, I I have a 3D TV, like a small 24-inch 3D TV. *00:00* But none of the media was mine. *00:00* I think and what's really cool is they're doing the same thing that they did when uh you know iTunes brought in 4K movies and stuff. *00:00* just thinking of that in a 3D sense as well now, I guess, which is another way we're gonna have to start thinking of pictures. *00:00* Yep. *00:00* Your inside office, maybe you just want to change change of scenery, that could be very valuable. *00:00* They make more and maybe go to more out of this world kind of places. *00:00* And so I get the the the how is it the difficulty scales way up when you're you're dealing with eyeballs instead of fat fingers. *00:00* means to interact with objects unless you pair trackpads and keyboards and all that stuff. *00:00* Right. *00:00* Which which is pretty neat. *00:00* I would no. *00:00* That's my be so fun. *00:00* And uh I was getting ready to become a dad, and then two weeks later she decided to show up early. *00:00* You tell me, does it get better when they can talk back, like and communicate with you what's wrong? *00:00* It's bad for your belly, and you know it's it's etc, etc. *00:00* Yeah, we should look into that. *00:00* So much information, way more dense than I thought, and it was all good. *00:00* That's interesting. *00:00* Yeah, I mean it was a lot of money. *00:00* I looked like a moron, but nevertheless, surprisingly few people seem to even notice I had the thing on, much less do like a what? *00:00* To get you to want to buy one, which makes sense, it's in a store environment, but also to get you through it as quickly as possible. *00:00* with this. *00:00* Like it needs to get down to all the phones as quickly as possible because I feel like this just has to become the way we take pictures and videos. *00:00* Yeah. *00:00* But here it is, if you're looking at something and you jiggle your max mouse, you get an iPad style like circular cursor on that Vision Pro window. *00:00* That's one of the things I'm most excited to try, just using a Mac in because *00:00* magic kind of feel that they're going for. *00:00* Programming for that I would have to imagine. *00:00* So I think that actually is a good segue to developing for the Apple Vision Pro, which is something that you are doing. *00:00* To bring your Mac display into the Vision Pro world because then you can have them side by side, right? *00:00* So yeah. *00:00* I mean it looks like you. *00:00* It's I think some of the changes there though the battery life has been pretty improved for the last *00:00* And that's just one small portion of it, if I'm not mistaken. *00:00* But if you're just flying it for fun, just fly it for fun. *00:00* Yeah, okay. *00:00* Um that's cool and impressive and the 3D looks great. *00:00* five ten years. *00:00* From little birdies that people inside Apple can look at two two screens. *00:00* Well, as long as you're using Apple keyboards and AppleMice, it works slickity split from what I've gathered. *00:00* Indeed. *00:00* Man, it's like selecting everything. *00:00* Yeah, you think about it I think about it kind of in the way pinch to zoom, I think, is probably one of the most famous examples. *00:00* It's like one of those just uh sort of things. *00:00* I think it was all polygons. *00:00* It's it I think of it as the most personal media device I've ever used in the store there. *00:00* That is I think it the downside of the demo is you don't get to and maybe it's because I've used VR before, so I I got over the initial like wow, this is really cool. *00:00* Yeah, I mean, well we'll see. *00:00* Yeah, that doesn't matter. *00:00* Yeah, okay. *00:00* I'm just surprised this one lasted longer than expected. *00:00* It's literally black. *00:00* I have a 24-inch iMac. *00:00* You know, I don't have a ton of time with doing development work specifically in it because I've just been exploring the Vision Pro broadly. *00:00* And I'm just sitting on the floor with I think it was like a nursing um, you know, like don't look at your wife's bits kind of nursing, whatever, or uh shield. *00:00* Made an app, Casey. *00:00* But it it was nice. *00:00* Yeah, that's very, very exciting to hear and eventually see someday. *00:00* So don't get don't get too excited about that. *00:00* Yeah, I again I haven't tried any captures with it quite yet, but it is it is really incredible. *00:01* I actually scheduled our libraries here are amazing, which is why I talk about them so much, but I scheduled, um, you know, I reserved a couple of like teeny tiny meeting rooms that are only designed for like a couple people. *00:01* It was it was i i I I know I'm on your podcast and you know it's kinda my role here to blow smoke up your butt. *00:01* You can so you can fly over people if you're moving in a straight line. *00:01* So yeah, check it out. *00:01* And as I had left, I did see someone with the biggest Apple bag I've ever seen, which indicated to me there was a Vision Pro in the back. *00:01* Yeah, it's really. *00:01* So I'm so glad that while it wasn't probably the wisest financial decision to upgrade, I'm so glad that I have a phone capable of this because even though I don't have the technology to view this properly right now *00:01* I didn't have a lot of time in the hotel room because I was, you know, visiting with friends, but the the time I spent in my hotel room, it was very neat. *00:01* Like it is amazing because let me tell you, the number one biggest complaint I have the about the Vision Pro, far and away, by a mile, more than the weight, more than the cost, more than well, maybe not more than cost, more than almost anything else. *00:01* So I get I get why it's not a thing. *00:01* That would be something for sure. *00:01* It's the worst. *00:01* There you are. *00:01* I think we had flown the day before. *00:01* I do I do love the the camera though. *00:01* But I'm a pilot now according to the FAA, which is empty. *00:01* I had tried the the Oculus Quest and the Rift in 2019 at a convention. *00:01* Well, in the journey from Central Virginia to New York, um, when you leave Virginia and arrive in Washington DC *00:01* That obviously is second fiddle after getting callshing out the door. *00:01* That way. *00:01* You know, like both as in Casey and Aaron. *00:01* I'm officially I have a license now that says I can fly little drones all over the place. *00:01* And I noticed that you had some sort of controllers behind you. *00:01* Like I I've seen video of other people's families very briefly, you know, very short videos. *00:01* Like this I feel like this has to become a standard across the iPhone line. *00:01* Uh just come on and visit. *00:01* So all that's missing is the watch. *00:01* Super weird. *00:01* Actually, I'm gonna I'm gonna come back and I'm trying to close that window, bring you back, do this, do this. *00:01* What I needed to do was travel mode. *00:01* So but I'm pretty sure that's what it is. *00:01* I'm like, okay, well, well there you go. *00:01* I remember the first time I used VR was I was walking around campus at UCF um from the lab that I taught as a as a TA. *00:01* It definitely people on the outside I think will not realize or will forget quickly that you can see and interact with them. *00:01* And it's just a matter of having the presence of mind to record that kind of video or photo or what have you um when the when the time is right. *00:01* That looks great, feels great. *00:01* I gotta say, so I've gone in and out of the environments in the time of use of Vision Pro, and you can consume media in. *00:01* And then you can pepper around that, if you so choose, Vision OS apps like Slack or Messages or Safari or whatever the case may be. *00:01* Now you can look things up in here with us and all that stuff. *00:01* Wow. *00:01* Because what if they're only in one episode and you thought that they were the star of the series? *00:01* In a game, it wouldn't be you wouldn't want that. *00:01* Oh, I see now. *00:01* That's hold on. *00:01* Oh look at the can you see the up here so up here I don't know how much little floating something right now look look what happens when I pitch my head downward. *00:01* And what's really cool is once you take the test and you pass it, you don't have to take it again. *00:01* You know, I would keep off to the side and get like, you know, side shots. *00:01* Manhattan as a regular member of the cast before we realize, oh, that's Dr. *00:01* It's not one of those things where you can only see it from a certain angle. *00:01* It was so great. *00:01* Um and the other the thing that really blew my mind and the thing I was hoping so desperately for in the weeks or the week or so leading up to the Vision Pro *00:01* And sometimes I find it very hard to get the Vision Pro to understand the difference between the button below it and that button. *00:01* So switch it back maybe to begin or something. *00:01* I don't know. *00:01* I've now got actually I don't even know where I put it. *00:01* I've learned that flying at nighttime is not as difficult as I would have thought as far as rules and regulation goes. *00:01* Right. *00:01* They're like fifty feet up, uh, you know, w right over people and so on and so forth. *00:01* Oh thank you. *00:01* So this is when you take a video with your phone or the Vision Pro and it's in 3D. *00:01* I wanted to talk to you about actually that input stuff really quick, specifically eye tracking. *00:01* I appreciate it. *00:01* Dark times. *00:01* I can nope not that. *00:01* Like, oh am I supposed to sleep for two hours now? *00:01* And that platform obviously is the Apple Vision Pro, baby. *00:01* She just has the presence of mind to take more photos of her with her phone all the time. *00:01* Um so I knew the basic gist of how things worked and I said, you know, but the media, like the sizzle reel stuff, I would love to see that. *00:01* And like how cool would it be to work in the ocean of the Bahamas and there's just fish swimming around and by me. *00:01* Uh it is incredible. *00:01* I mean, you're putting the headset on at some point. *00:01* Oh my goodness gracious. *00:01* I see uh do I see quest controllers behind you over your left shoulder? *00:01* But you're there. *00:02* I'm sure I could have gone to a strip mall and taken it, but I happened to be close enough to the airport. *00:02* I don't think there was any texture whatsoever if memory serves. *00:02* Now, I think that actually worked to the PSVR one's benefit because it's a movie and so some grain *00:02* You know, not stare at the outside glass wall, but stare at the wall wall and the back of it. *00:02* Just click this and now look, you have a 4K 50 inch Mac display right here, and no one else can see what you're doing. *00:02* Uh no worries. *00:02* Uh my daughter, we have two kids. *00:02* Yes. *00:02* Um but anyways I got the Mutant Enormous phone and I mostly like it. *00:02* I use it almost every time we watch something. *00:02* Call sheet. *00:02* There's a three and then there is a pro, but the pro is like the fifteen hundred dollar one and the three is like the five hundred dollar one. *00:02* I feel like you're going in there to spend $4,000. *00:02* Yeah. *00:02* She seems kind of blasé about it in no small part because of the price. *00:02* It wasn't ridiculous, but they would jiggle about some. *00:02* Yeah, humor it's in real life. *00:02* Like in so many ways a lot of things do get easier. *00:02* I'm like, oh gosh. *00:02* I thought flying at night would be a whole separate certification essentially, but it it all falls in. *00:02* Right. *00:02* And you know, but with that I also can I have, you know, I can fly certain distances and things more so legally, you know, within the spectrum. *00:02* Uh these drones are so small. *00:02* But yeah, the the feature is the spatial videos and photos, and I get now why there's a dedicated capture button on the Apple Vision Pro. *00:02* I've routinism so important with bedtime. *00:02* But for Michaela, we have one of those clocks that like lights up when when it's time to get up. *00:02* And he took like a twenty thirty minute nap on me if I remember right. *00:02* I'm sure that won't be expensive at all. *00:02* So I think you're really generally good. *00:02* I like it. *00:02* And once I got it working appropriately, it was really nice. *00:02* Scarefloor. *00:02* It's just that that viewport has depth to it, right? *00:02* Uh now let's look at a panorama. *00:02* Uh mostly yes. *00:02* Um or at least uh I feel like i I've tried that at some point. *00:02* I gotta investigate, like, do panoramas work in third-party apps in the way that I expect? *00:02* It it's you. *00:02* Now I'm back, baby. *00:02* And this is outside of, you know, you have to register the drone with the FAA and put the number on the drone somewhere. *00:02* I did. *00:02* But that's all right. *00:02* So I've been I've been into VR since I first tried it in 2015. *00:02* Now I don't know how many people are really walking into the Altamont Mall. *00:02* I think I think people should try it in general just to understand the product better. *00:02* Yeah, the only problem with that though, and I haven't looked into this much, but I do or I used to buy a lot of like, you know, DVDs and Blu-rays. *00:02* I completely agree. *00:02* Nevertheless, uh having the environments, the immersive environments, I briefly did put it on in the train and it did make the experience way nicer. *00:02* Come on and visit and I'll uh and I'll strap you into the matrix for a minute. *00:02* I can say that tile fine. *00:02* Thank you very much. *00:02* That does look like Mount Hood, you're right. *00:02* New territory. *00:02* B, B, B, and he was just mashing his fingers together as quick as he could, because he was saying more bread, more bread, more bread, more bread. *00:02* I was curious, you know, if you were gonna be bold enough to take this four thousand. *00:02* They're not about to spend thirty five hundred dollars on it, but they were extremely impressed by it. *00:02* And those two serve very different purposes, but they both work. *00:02* But the environment itself, very neat. *00:02* And all of these things, you know, even if if I were to walk into the bathroom, like they all stay put phenomenally well. *00:02* Now the one bad side is, unless you set it up such that everything is basically microscopic, you're going to be moving your head around. *00:02* And that would be honest to goodness Vision OS native, not the iPad app in Vision OS, but a truly native Vision OS version. *00:02* I I sure hope so. *00:02* And Declan at the time was like eighteen months old, so this is, you know, around your daughter's age. *00:02* Yeah. *00:02* So I think we're saying the same thing. *00:02* Right. *00:02* Uh it's just what the my friend has told me. *00:02* Why not work in the scare floor? *00:02* And even though it is a bit of a gimmick, uh, it's it looks great. *00:02* And that's definitely a thing that the demo doesn't do. *00:02* So doing it as the me main means of input on the Vision Pro I think contributes to that. *00:02* The future spatial computer. *00:02* Yeah, so I'm turning to my right, and so you're coming out of my left ear, and then flip-flop the other way. *00:02* And I'm holding up my phone to n not in his ear, but you know, next to his ear to get his you know familiar water noise. *00:02* Whoopsies. *00:02* I assume she has. *00:02* Yes, that's a very good analogy. *00:02* It's not quite as good with the panoramas in most in my experience because the fidelity isn't really enough in most cases to be blown up the size that they're blown up. *00:02* Like you're not moving them an inch. *00:02* You could just have it pop emojis over people in real life. *00:02* One Apple Vision Pro is probably what? *00:02* So this would have been, you know, around the time that Michaela was turning, I don't know, three or four. *00:02* That's awesome. *00:02* I remember, so we I did do the thing. *00:02* I flick up. *00:02* But um but it's not compulsory. *00:02* I appreciate it. *00:02* Now before we got on the phone together, got on the Discord together today, um, we briefly had a FaceTime, which we'll probably talk about the *00:02* I was so confused. *00:02* Uh the comfort w it got a little heavy after a while. *00:02* I've only ever tried one, but I think you can get two or maybe more than two of these going concurrently to different machines. *00:02* You know, just to see making collections everywhere. *00:02* It works, but just only just. *00:02* I can do this and can I Yeah, you can't get any bigger than that apparently. *00:02* And and what we ended up doing was I think we flew into like Fort Lauderdale or something, and then I forget exactly where we flew into, but we rented a car. *00:02* Nap time is vital. *00:02* It's it's like flying a plane 101 kinda, which was way more extensive than I thought it was going to be. *00:02* Basically I've learned that all of the flying with my drone I've done up to this point has been illegal. *00:02* It's it so there's like a huge somewhat privacy implication there of it saying where I am, not necessarily just where the drone is, but it's *00:02* It's uh it's pretty good. *00:02* Or you you had a demo, right? *00:02* I want this everywhere in my life, and I want it immediately. *00:02* And that that'll apply here to the pictures and photos and videos as well. *00:02* It's really an iPad Slack app that's running in the context of the Vision Pro. *00:02* It's moving around really fast. *00:02* Um or but I am looking forward to it, especially with the Mac Virtual Display thing. *00:02* Before I let you go, before we wrap up, if you don't mind, I did uh I had a *00:02* Oh Mount Hood. *00:02* Do you see what I mean? *00:02* I'm your host, it was a 15-inch MacBook Pro, and then before that was an 11-inch MacBook Air. *00:02* Alright, hold on. *00:02* Very weird. *00:02* Uh so I turned on airplane mode, which I'm not gonna do now because I think it'll cut off the call, thinking, okay, I'm in I'm in a moving vehicle. *00:02* Uh so the older they get they get, the more they have opinions, which in some ways is nice, but in a lot of ways isn't. *00:02* Yeah, see, that's not how we handled things. *00:02* Yeah. *00:02* Which is surprising because I really would have thought it would have been Avatar Way of Water, which is really what I wanted to see, because I did go to the theater to see that in 3D because *00:02* Oh, okay, I'm sorry. *00:02* So I went through the movie screen as the train took off and immediately was like, oh, tracking's disabled, or tracking has failed, blah blah blah. *00:02* I just so happen to have a hotspot that I was borrowing. *00:02* It's 90, 95%, which is phenomenal. *00:02* But indeed. *00:02* So if I look way up where that blob is would normally be a chevron *00:02* And it was your daughter's first day at Disney ever, wasn't it? *00:02* You know, so that was very interesting to figure out. *00:02* I think probably around the twelve or thirteen, like, there was a big gain in battery life it felt like. *00:02* But if it adds nothing but restrictions and complications, I wonder if maybe that juice ain't worth the squeeze. *00:02* Yep, yep, yep. *00:02* And so I haven't been in probably a year or two. *00:02* Well imagine that app, but done by someone who actually respects the users of that app. *00:02* I don't know. *00:02* Especially because I like to at least once a week go to a library or go to a Wegman's or, you know, a Publix, if to put it in Max's language. *00:02* So it's certainly only something that's going to get better with time. *00:02* Yeah, it's a lot. *00:03* Which is part of, you know, we did it for work so that we could film job sites and construction projects and things like that. *00:03* Like the because of particulars of the law, they have to be under 250 grams, which is not that heavy. *00:03* Um do you have you seen that, Max? *00:03* So I feel like there's some detachment between this device is so personal, but the way that you try it out is not *00:03* Maybe there's concerns about brand IP and, you know, what people are doing in these spaces. *00:03* Yeah, well it's look targets. *00:03* And you don't even have to pull your phone out. *00:03* But thank you, you can find casey stuff. *00:03* Or the I mean the the view. *00:03* Some f yes, I'm spoiling it whoops. *00:03* Yeah, yeah. *00:03* I'm almost certain. *00:03* I feel like there's a few others. *00:03* So it's not the most ideal environment, I think, to use one, but it is the only way for folks in mass to try one, and I definitely think people should try one before they *00:03* So I was like, well, I would like to do this and this and this, but it's you've got to stick to the script. *00:03* And it worked very well. *00:03* I've done it with another Mac. *00:03* I don't know. *00:03* And the app icon. *00:03* Yes, thank you. *00:03* And it's like a outline of the Vision Pro with like, you know, waves, like ripples coming off of it. *00:03* Right. *00:03* So now I'm back at home. *00:03* We are comfortably in the future. *00:03* Because then you have a lot more time to get junk done. *00:03* I love having the extra zoom. *00:03* You're you're married to a pilot now, so letter the law says that's that's the rule. *00:03* Uh but yeah, it's actually called Call Sheet. *00:03* 30-minute demo, which seems to be the same as the press demo. *00:03* I've not seen it since, but when I did the pickup, I think they m that might be special for just the Apple store uh but *00:03* It worked extremely well. *00:03* Oh yes. *00:03* All right, duly noted. *00:03* Then I think it typically, perhaps not on a FaceTime call, but it would typically show or play some sort of ambient noise. *00:03* That's what I'm thinking of. *00:03* Color-wise? *00:03* She has been such a good sleeper in the sense of she sleeps through the night. *00:03* You're flying it over parks and things. *00:03* And you get a series, you get like 20, I believe it is, free searches where you can do search you know for actors or movies or whatnot, whatnot, 20 times for ISQ to pay. *00:03* Uh but then I tried it again on the way down and it did work because I realized the error in my ways. *00:03* So now theoretically you have a a suite of 3D movies, assuming you've bought anything within the last *00:03* And as a reminder, universal control is where you set your iPad next to your Mac and you can just swoosh the the mouse cursor *00:03* And you know, from an accessibility perspective, that that's enticing. *00:03* Why did Elon have to ruin handles? *00:03* But now how do I come back and then it should be me again. *00:03* Uh we were going down to Disney just like we did with Declan Swift uh, you know, a few years before and we we treated the kids to well, all we treated all of us, but you know the the uh the *00:03* It was infuriating. *00:03* Even for mundane stuff that isn't that important. *00:03* Up up there it's all electric. *00:03* And so your Mac keyboard and mouse is controlling the iPad sitting next to the Mac *00:03* And I'm just bounce and it just so happens to be that's where I'm looking as I'm sucking it in. *00:03* Um I I I can't say too much about what happened when I had the lab, but I didn't really have this happen when I was in the lab. *00:03* And I think it's in line with something you're already working on, if you'll permit me. *00:03* Go away. *00:03* And now it's interesting behind you it's all blurred boca very, very, very soft. *00:03* Anyway, w uh if you're satisfied w I can shut all this down. *00:03* I remember that. *00:03* You know, what is our lives, I guess I should say. *00:03* It's only like eight or nine episodes and they're about an hour each and it's one of my favorite TV shows of all time. *00:03* And with regard to AR, I mean I can't even think of anything in particular. *00:03* There was uh, you know, I guess slight correction for John off the most recent episode of ATP. *00:03* Like F1 does a phenomenal job of showing you if you subscribe to F1 TV *00:03* It it the the more that we have of available to us in the thing in the device that is pretty much literally always on our person *00:03* And as the subway took off, the screen stood still and, you know, went zooming through the other train cars and oh never to be seen again. *00:03* It's actually pretty delightful. *00:03* Using your eyeballs to look at something and interact with it makes total sense in VR. *00:03* I feel confident in saying that works 100% of the time. *00:03* I mean it would be right in front of you and oh call sheet's off to my left and I can *00:03* No, but you do no but that's a legitimate question because I don't know if it's on this one. *00:03* That's what travel mode is. *00:03* So um it does get easier on the whole, but with every forward step, there's at least a lateral or sometimes reverse step as well. *00:03* Yes, it is. *00:03* Um, you know, that's why there's insurance, I guess. *00:03* It was also around the time that I saw someone using Google Glass in the building, which I thought was really cool. *00:03* I'm just trying to explore the future of this technology. *00:03* Um, and and what this is is you can do this with a phone, it's pretty good. *00:03* It is freaking magic. *00:03* And, you know, it's measuring the I think it's infrared light is how it works. *00:03* Yeah, yeah, that's it. *00:03* I can bring you in a desert? *00:03* And so when I turned on distinct things. *00:03* Like it's ridiculous. *00:03* And not only did you come, but your absolutely adorable family joined *00:03* I'm sorry, what? *00:03* And I mean, again, back to the common sense, I don't want to fly this over people because if that's exactly *00:03* Uh he's like he said that he couldn't schedule a demo for the opening weekend, and it was because *00:03* It seemed irresponsible for me not to spend an irresponsible amount of money on this thing, but um but nevertheless it *00:03* She actually hasn't had the chance yet. *00:03* Yeah. *00:03* You know, we did the baby sign language thing where we taught each of them like the bare minimum of signs so they could at least get the gist of what they wanted across. *00:03* But anyway, Declan in his high chair, vigorously mashing his you know fingertips together. *00:03* It's the what time does she wake up that's getting a bit uh frustrated a little bit? *00:03* And I try very hard to be like that when I'm on your side of the table, you know what I mean? *00:03* I don't mean that in a nasty way, but you know, list family, you do what you need to do, and we'll just be along for the ride. *00:03* Which which is a very well-air conditioned, generally not obscenely loud *00:03* And it also kind of is it's even though this has been a thing for us for our family for over ten years, it still kind of makes her go *00:03* Even though I'm not actively like monetizing Instagram. *00:03* No, and I mean uh even silly things like I used to go to the local Cars and Coffee, which is basically all the the car nerd. *00:03* Um there's another one I d uh for TV particularly I do *00:03* So I presume, and given your you know predilection for video games, I presume you have quite a bit of history with VR? *00:03* But I've played and used it all quite extensively. *00:03* It's very it it is certainly tailored to be as much pop *00:03* But like Abby has no interest in trying it because she told me, Oh, it's just it's uh it's just VR. *00:03* I'm not trying to say it isn't, but don't expect that there's just some cliff a happy cliff that you just fall off of and suddenly everything is cake because of the *00:03* But yeah, so a lot has happened in you know two-ish years. *00:03* Yep. *00:03* Other things have happened with you and I though. *00:03* I don't think getting this particular license would be worth it in that context. *00:03* I mean call sheet. *00:03* Uh but the problem with call sheet though is I gotta I gotta bring it to a new platform. *00:03* So I'm gonna at some point have to look into this and see what the deal is. *00:03* And maybe it's a toggle eventually where a developer needs to flip the switch to allow it to be shared with the environment. *00:03* On the way back down, I thought, well, let me try it again. *00:03* You know, not I know call sheet is the main focus, but I had a thought the other day *00:03* I have started that just barely, and then everything keeps getting in the way. *00:03* Uh can I that's this is not what I want, I don't think. *00:03* So anyway, I can close the hold on try to go there we go. *00:03* I mean it it technically could lacerate your skin bec I mean it's just a plastic propeller. *00:03* Because when I went there, I could have gotten a demo that day at eleven, but I I waited till Saturday because that was when we kind of were originally planning to do it. *00:03* There was a shark swimming at you and in front of you with this with a person scuba diving, and then the rhinos just walking right up to you. *00:03* It actually was nice to do because again, I was in a busy Apple store. *00:03* Um I could see that. *00:03* Uh I was so convinced that that airplane meant travel. *00:03* It is black. *00:03* But that is certainly one of the things I'm most keen to try and I won't really get to try it until I own one of these things. *00:03* And there was a moment in the demo where I forget what app, it was probably photos or or something along the side. *00:03* Like, how does how does your approach to developing shift here for the Vision Pro? *00:03* This is so weird. *00:03* I'm sorry, not Joshua Tree, it's Mount Hood. *00:03* Um sorry if you don't know who I am. *00:04* Uh but speaking of things that are light and perhaps even lighter than air, you've got some personal news to share, which I am very, very annoyed and jealous of. *00:04* Like even just reading sectionals, you know, the the charts that that pilots use, that seems like it would be a lot to me. *00:04* Uh agreed. *00:04* And uh so when Apple publicly announced *00:04* So you had to go to the store, schedule the appointment, and then I think they were anticipating *00:04* The the Monster Sync scare floor. *00:04* And I I could totally see this, you know, being, you know, when you want to go somewhere else from your *00:04* I think the Quest Pro and maybe the Quest. *00:04* But it's yeah, but it's not you. *00:04* The inciting event was um was the birthday. *00:04* Because then the the mini three came out that added um front-back accident avoidance or uh obstacle avoidance if I remember right. *00:04* It's a I mean he has been investigated by the FAA before, but it's amazing that he had *00:04* So like you can't fly over the road or a job site or anything. *00:04* I don't feel like one, but I technically am. *00:04* Um there's like I won't spoil it, but there was a character who had two roles. *00:04* Exactly. *00:04* It's a little nutty. *00:04* Well here, let me try. *00:04* No, it's like a beige. *00:04* He was in town from London buying his own Vision Pro and he was completely dumbfounded to see me, which was amazing. *00:04* I think I was riding a roller coaster for a minute, and it was, you know, it made me feel like I was on a roller coaster. *00:04* And then um Thursday morning and during the day we had some stuff going on and Thursday night uh I forget what I was something was going on, but um we just haven't had the chance yet. *00:04* And that viewport is probably the size like probably two to three times the size of an average home TV. *00:04* And I know you and I, you're probably a bigger F1 fan than I, but can you imagine being able to be *00:04* And wow, don't you feel like you're standing there? *00:04* But it has a travel mode that you that you can turn on and *00:04* Whereas if you do the Mac Virtual Display thing, the max screen goes black. *00:04* Like I'm yeah the the selection and I'm like, oh, it's because my eyes are *00:04* But um it's certainly worth exploring and I do plan to explore it at some point *00:04* I I have at least put a modicum of effort into making the iPad app, not garbage, but I have not even I've done the literal bare minimum that I can do *00:04* I can do I have to go to the home screen. *00:04* Isn't that weird? *00:04* We left formula a bit ago and now it's milk's over, so *00:04* And uh, you know, that's something you've talked about doing and getting, and you you know, you fly your drones and take pictures and things like that. *00:04* But um they did give us the the two because they said they were never gonna do anything with it, and uh I haven't actually s had the time to set it up yet, which is unfortunate, but *00:04* This was a long time ago. *00:04* And my limited understanding, which I have not verified, is that you don't necessarily get an auto upgrade from *00:04* The thing where you look at your computer and there's a little hovering connect button that you can click, or I guess pinch, if you will. *00:04* This works. *00:04* That's a that's a cool shirt, it's a cool computer, and you're just standing there and we're both dumbfounded that someone recognized the chip. *00:04* Making progress. *00:04* And now not only do I have a mutant, enormous phone, but I have to put a stupid pop socket on the back because it's too big to hold otherwise. *00:04* There's no, hey, why don't you go to Amazon, which owns IMDB, and buy stuff. *00:04* And so like that's what that used to look like. *00:04* That's a really, really good analogy. *00:04* And that's, you know, gosh, seven-year-old VR tech at this point. *00:04* But I think that's kind of the same thing that's applying here. *00:04* Okay. *00:04* And I'm sure my apparently large face will fit just fine and apparently your small face. *00:04* Yep. stationary. *00:04* It sucks. *00:04* I found that maybe it's a it this is this very well maybe a user error thing because *00:04* social is how I like to phrase it. *00:04* So here's the backyard and the screen didn't porch. *00:04* Okay. *00:04* Well, that's what travel mode is supposed to avoid. *00:04* A little heads up would I mean, there's nothing I guess we really could have done, so I guess it makes sense, but it was very interesting. *00:04* You're just getting really cool pictures and things. *00:04* Well apparently they're killed off immediately, you know, or whatever the case may be *00:04* And I I say that as someone who does not care for 3D movies. *00:04* And I'm looking forward to over time collecting more and more of these spatial videos, which I think I will, for me anyway, probably still *00:04* Like, you know, I it just it's so easy to imagine. *00:04* It'll be cool to see the the actors in the movies. *00:04* I can't see me, it just occurred to me. *00:04* But anyways, but occasionally I would go b back when it was nearer to me, and occasionally I would bring the drone. *00:04* So I did do the demo uh opening weekend. *00:04* They didn't seem to have a very specific use case in mind. *00:04* You can go to the Disney Theater. *00:04* And so I'm looking at these ornaments off to the side, and I'm I it clicks with me. *00:04* Strap is what I was looking for. *00:04* Yeah, the future is here, the future is now. *00:04* Anyway, I can't that's I think that's the it's telling me that I'm *00:04* And then you then you twist your hand so that now your fingertips pointed at each other and you smack them together over and over again. *00:05* Uh, you know, we read the books, we turn the lights, we brush our teeth, you know, the whole deal. *00:05* I but movies and TV, very, very cool. *00:05* You can find my work over at maxfrequency. *00:05* I'm spoiling ATP now. *00:05* It's like, well, there isn't any more. *00:05* And uh it was it was are great, and the instructor's cool, all this stuff. *00:05* You just have to take recurrent training every few years. *00:05* There's Alicia Keyes singing at you. *00:05* Like I tried they have you scroll through pictures. *00:05* I filmed, I put my phone on a tripod uh with a *00:05* And so there's literally nothing anyone can do to watch you. *00:05* Nope, nothing changed. *00:05* Yeah, I cannot remember the last time our children let us sleep past seven o'clock because we have *00:05* And they just changed it up our nap schedule at school. *00:05* Uh I mean we meet right there in the dinosaur dinosaur area of uh *00:05* This still happens, but the the place within the Richmond area, which is where I am, it moved to what it was one of those like it's across town and it's not that bad to get there, but ugh. *00:05* The testing facility was actually at the local airport. *00:05* This is not real at the cost of debt. *00:05* Yeah, I guess. *00:05* We just wrapped up our Pokemon season playing all the mainline Pokemon games, and we've begun work on season seven and eight, Metroid Prime. *00:05* Alright. *00:05* How how unc how uncanny is the uncanny valley? *00:05* And it's it's just hilarious to watch. *00:05* Yes, making lots of progress. *00:05* Yeah, and Aaron Aaron loves when this happens in both the literal and the uh air quotes kind of way. *00:05* I thought it was right here. *00:05* Like it's it's absurd how much lighter the new phones are. *00:05* So that does there's a new standard for drones now, basically that broad I forget the term for it, but it it basically *00:05* Like you can't hover, essentially, is kind of the real rule is you can't just literally I mean don't fly over people. *00:05* Uh this is an app on the iOS App Store and the the elevator tour or the elevator pitch of it is, hey, imagine the IMDB app, the Internet Movie Database app. *00:05* Or another great example is I don't want to see how many episodes. *00:05* I love it so much. *00:05* But then I bought uh PlayStation VR one back in twenty *00:05* But you know, the the impact of something like a live photo *00:05* But I think it will be an option and I certainly hope. *00:05* So uh you know, in in different uh uh not like in the hotel room, in the hotel room like I mean mentioned a moment ago, those *00:05* And it was uh noticeable but not frustrating. *00:05* So I did a lot of this in the hotel room because you know I roll with a 14-inch MacBook Pro. *00:05* And so I was reconciling the checking account and I could do that on the laptop screen. *00:05* It is unreal how well it works. *00:05* And obviously pinching to Zoom is a much easier thing to program for and predict than *00:05* Maybe I'm lying to you, but I believe that I tried that at least once. *00:05* Alright, so now there we go. *00:05* I th I did that faux pas where I assume everyone knows me, but that which is so uncool. *00:05* And so I'm not looking to like do real estate *00:07* You know, on the desk area I could set up like messages and Slack and then over where the TV was in the hotel room I can replace that with the *00:07* It's tomorrow's technology today, as MKBHD said, and uh he is exactly right. *00:07* I haven't used this one as much, but when I go back to um *00:07* And then I can make you not see yourself. *00:07* And Casey, you're you're a smart
