Enjoy. --- Hey everybody, welcome to the Max Frequency Podcast. *00:00* No long form third episode this month. *00:04* Instead, I'm here to announce a new podcast that I'm launching today. *00:07* It's called Chapter Select. *00:12* It is with my longtime friend and podcast partner, Logan Moore. *00:14* And in chapter select, Logan and I take a series of games. *00:18* and we play them from beginning to end, uh exploring their design, evolution, and legacy. *00:22* The twist is that we we play the first game that was released and then we play the most recent game. *00:28* And then we go to the second game released and we end up meeting in the middle, so we we kind of bounce back and forth. *00:34* That's the idea of the show. *00:40* Uh it's launched today with *00:42* Quote season zero. *00:44* This was actually a test pilot that we did last year in 2020, focusing on The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part Two. *00:46* Season one *00:53* proper is launching next Wednesday, the first Wednesday here in June 2021. *00:55* Um we're not announcing what season one is yet *01:00* But season zero, both episodes live in the feed right now. *01:05* So if you go anywhere and you look up uh where you listen to podcasts and you look up chapter select, uh you'll see it by Max Roberts and Logan Moore. *01:08* And you can listen to those two episodes right there. *01:17* We actually recorded uh both of these right before and right after The Last of Us Part II launched last year. *01:19* So there's uh these are very *01:25* Not raw. *01:29* They're they're thought through, but they're they're very close to the launch of part two. *01:30* It really wouldn't be a podcast with me in particular if uh Naughty Dog wasn't involved in some capacity. *01:40* So that's that's season zero. *01:47* It's out now in the next week, season one. *01:48* If you'll uh so go check that out, please. *01:52* And now if you'll allow me, there's there's a post on the blog maxfrequency. *01:56* net. *02:01* I'll I'll put a link in the show notes here as well, but *02:02* This this is an idea for a show that I've had for for three years now and it's been in production or like you know working it out for a year now, as we've we've worked out *02:06* season zero like I just talked about, figuring out season one and playing through those games uh up to now. *02:17* And I'm so excited to finally have this out *02:24* Um you know, I had the idea for this show before I even had an idea for this show, the Max Frequency Podcast. *02:30* So I'm really jazzed to get it out there and have everyone listen to it. *02:35* We're having a lot of fun with it and it I really think the *02:40* The structure is kind of twofold. *02:44* Having just the the actual structure of the show, the play the first game in a series and then the most recent bounce back and forth and meet in the middle. *02:47* uh you know, say uh we did 3D Mario, which is not what we're doing now. *02:56* It's obviously an idea we have, but say we did three D Mario. *03:01* Super Mario 64. *03:05* Then we would play Super Mario Odyssey. *03:06* And then you bounce back and you play Super Mario Sunshine. *03:08* And you go back and forth until you meet in the middle, probably around Galaxy 2. *03:11* I would think Galaxy or Galaxy 2, because there's 3D world in there. *03:17* And 3D land. *03:21* Anyway, I digress. *03:22* What that really we I have found, I should say, I don't I don't want to speak for Logan necessarily here, but I I do think he agrees with me. *03:25* What we found in season one, in particular, since it's more than just two games like The Last of Us. *03:33* What we found is seeing where a series started and where it has gone *03:39* is fascinating. *03:47* And to play that back to back really gives you a taste of what has stayed, what is gone, what's changed, what hasn't. *03:48* And *03:55* kind of really focus in on what makes a game series that particular series instead of just looking at *03:57* Uh let's look at uh Uncharted Night. *04:05* Again, we'll bring this like it's these are quick and off the top of the head for me. *04:08* Uncharted one to Uncharted Two is a very clear jump. *04:12* I mean, that's kind of really the game *04:15* that set Naughty Dog on the the path they're on now, these active cinematic experiences. *04:18* And though the the leap from one to two is is quite substantial, but if you go from one *04:24* To Lost Legacy, that's a more substantial leap, but the core of that series is still intact, and what's changed and what hasn't, you can explore. *04:29* And then you would bounce back to Uncharted 2. *04:37* And you have a whole new perspective of like now we're taking not a regression, per se, at least in the case of Uncharted, but *04:40* we can kind of see the origins of these and and pair that all together. *04:48* I think it's really fun and I've I found that format for this discussion um insightful and unique and it it frankly has me more excited to talk about games than I have been in years. *04:51* And I I'm loving it. *05:01* I'm having a lot of fun. *05:02* Chapter Select also has reminded me of the early days of Logan and I's former podcast, Millennial Gaming Speak. *05:04* That was uh a weekly gaming news show uh that Logan and I did together in early on in the show, which I guess those episodes live on my hard drive somewhere, but our goal was *05:12* uh to to tap into the the quote unquote millennial side of the show where we were younger people we had and played some of the most classic and iconic games that have really kind of established the foundation of the video game industry that you see today. *05:26* A a great example was Castlevania's Symphony of the Night, what put the Vania in Metroidvania, you know, and is launched *05:39* uh thousands of games has inspired, if more than that, uh Kickstarters out the wazoo that have Castlevania or Egovania. *05:48* We played Castlevania. *05:56* Symphony of the night. *05:57* But our premise was to like beat it in a week, beat it in two weeks, t s these games and we chose *05:59* Super Metroid, Earthbound, Symphony of Night, and other in other games, but that that didn't last long for us, mostly because *06:06* It was so demanding to beat those games on top of other games and have a quick turnaround beat discuss to keep up with the pace of the show. *06:16* Maybe we were doing it on a two-week interval or not, but *06:25* I that did that part of Millennial Gaming Speak didn't really last long and frankly the podcast just turned into Gaming Speak with Max and Logan and I I love that show and it had a really great run and we I had a ton of fun with it. *06:29* But we lost sight of that. *06:41* And chapter of select, I think, kind of captures that spirit again, but gives us control over the timing, the pace. *06:43* and how we want to present it and let us choose different games and series to talk about. *06:51* And it's not just old games or iconic games or classic games or great games. *06:55* It could be series with good and bad games. *07:01* It could be *07:03* We we may do bad games. *07:04* I don't know where we'll go from here. *07:05* We we kind of really only have the first two seasons fully mapped out, planned *07:08* Either way, I'm I think the show is gonna tap into what we were trying to do then with our experience and knowledge now, plus giving us greater flexibility to avoid *07:14* you know, feeling like this is work. *07:28* Because really this is just a passion of the two of us. *07:30* We both love not only playing games and talking about them, but doing podcasts. *07:34* And I that's a part of it. *07:37* And I'm so excited to be doing this with him. *07:39* It's not just me and Logan though. *07:41* We have guests joining us. *07:43* Uh so far not on every episode. *07:45* We've we kinda did the first two episodes of season *07:47* uh one by ourselves and now we have guests lined up for the rest of season one. *07:50* That might carry over into season two of like having a guest the whole time, but having someone join us individually on one game at a time offers a unique *07:55* one-time perspective that can help influence Logan and I's kind of arching narrative through the whole season. *08:04* It's gonna be fun. *08:10* It's a blast. *08:12* I've taken a lot of of pride in the edit but and the art that I've been making for this show, and I'm really looking forward to to sharing this with everyone. *08:13* So *08:22* If you would like uh to to go listen, you can check out the links in the show notes. *08:23* You could search chapter select wherever you listen to podcast. *08:28* And uh *08:31* And check it out. *08:32* I really, really hope you enjoy it. *08:33* And I look forward to sharing season one with you here in just a week. *08:34* Um Logan is actually going to join me on *08:39* this podcast, the Max Frequency Podcast, in June. *08:42* And we're gonna we're gonna talk about this and and probably some Ratchet and Clink, I think, because that game comes out. *08:46* And so I'm looking forward to having that discussion with him in a in a more casual one-on-one. *08:51* Setting. *08:57* Anyway, thank you so much for listening. *08:58* If you want to find me on Twitter, you can follow me at Max Roberts143. *09:00* You can find my focusing on The Last of Us, The Last of Us Part 2, and then next week, season one, which is to be announced. *09:43* Thank you so much, and I'll catch you all next time. *09:52*
