I don't think I have seen a first-party failure of this scope, ever. Sony [bought](https://sonyinteractive.com/en/press-releases/2023/sony-interactive-entertainment-to-acquire-firewalk-studios-from-probablymonsters-inc/) Firewalk Studios *for this game* as a part of their push for 10 live service games by March 2026.[^1] As the deadline has drawn closer, Sony has [all but retracted](https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/sony-confirms-its-delayed-half-of-its-12-planned-live-service-games/) that ambition. Naughty Dog axed its *The Last of Us Online* title after years in development. It's not really a surprise that Jim Ryan has stepped down from PlayStation. He navigated the waters of launching the next PlayStation during a global pandemic, but he also steered the ship right into an apparent graveyard of live service titles. Hard not to imagine the billions lost, years spent, and other games benched chasing a slice of the live service pie. I am reminded of the Power Mac G4 Cube. Just a year after it hit the market, the iconic cube-shaped desktop was "[put on ice](https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2001/07/03Apple-Puts-Power-Mac-G4-Cube-on-Ice/)." > The company said there is a small chance it will reintroduce an upgraded model of the unique computer in the future, but that there are no plans to do so at this time. The Cube never came off the ice. During its year on the market, Apple [tried](https://512pixels.net/2021/07/2001-revisited-g4-cube-put-on-ice/) to invigorate sales, but it was never enough. *Concord* is on ice.
