# what is ? = pretty bad music
Waiter! Please bring me claim chowder that I may drown in while AI generated music drolls in the background.
🙃
A month ago, I [[what is pretty good music|wrote]] about a new jazzy lo-fi YouTube channel I came across thanks to the all mighty algorithm. I even wrote about the choice of thumbnail design in an issue of [[Memory Card 10 – Finding Joy in Music and Thumbnails|Memory Card]]. This channel cropped out of nowhere with a slew of albums in three weeks and was trending way upward. I found the output shocking. I ended that post with this,
> All I can figure out about what is ? is there are apparently in South Korea and uploaded all these albums within the last *three weeks*. Would love to find out more some day.
[Found out more I have](https://youtube.com/watch?v=_oxtFP2UUyM), again thanks to the algorithm and Evil Pinely.
It's all apparently a part of a music AI tool called Suno. The output is now explained.
Right away, I am flat out embarrassed. I never would have shared this if I had know. I probably still would have shared the thumbnail bit because, yo know what, the art is actually credited to a real-life artist. Is that artist receiving commission from its use as a thumbnail? No, but I saw a little credit and just assumed the rest was "legit," as the kids say. My bad.
Like Evil Pinely says in his video, I just put this on in the background and never gave it a second real thought. The embodiment of lo-fi jazz cocktail party drown out the silence in the least offensive way possible music. I do like that music. But I like it from real life people.
I started noticing other recommended videos with very similar styled thumbnails, but I didn't click them. I figured it was all some sort of trend and I didn't care too deeply. I wager the music is roughly the same.
I also gave *what is ?* credit because their music was on streaming services. I just kind of assumed that also meant a human wrote, composed, and performed the beats. My eyes have been opened to the apparent ease of putting out AI generated tunes on a streaming service.
I've unsubscribed from the channel. I've deleted the albums from my library. If you listened on my account, my bad. I'm sorry. I suggest you do the same and forget *what is ?* in its entirety.[^1]
[^1]: I suppose the only accurate comparison I made originally was to Poolsuite FM, since they have fully embraced web3, crypto, and AI. I hear they are releasing Poolsuite FM version 3 soon and now I truly worry about what that product will be. As it stands, they do give credit and links to all music on Soundcloud.
