In a slightly surprising move to me, KPop Demon Hunters is coming to the Criterion Collection this November. While familiar with the films' insane popularity, my only exposure to it was my buddy's daughter fast forwarding to the end to show me her favorite song one morning over breakfast. I haven't had a Netflix subscription in ages and never figured this one would be on my radar.

Then I read the included bonus features in the Criterion release...

"Two video essays by filmmakers Taylor Ramos & Tony Zhou (Every Frame a Painting)"

Someone alert Jason Kottke.

Jokes aside, I think this is a good example of how the Criterion Collection (and by extension their wonderful Closet videos) get me to watch films I have never heard of or would consider. It's kind of like my imaginary Blockbuster nowadays. I have found new favorites ever since my wife and I started picking a new Criterion movie every couple of months to add to our collection. Perhaps I am too generous in my reviews, but I'd call this list so far full of bangers.

I highly recommend treating movies like this. Get out of the endless feeds of streaming apps, find a disc, buy it and commit to a night in. It's been one of my new favorite rituals we do as a family. There's intentionality and tactility behind movie nights again.

Anyway, I am adding KPop Demon Hunters to my "to buy" list now.
