The PS6 Handheld (AKA the PSP 3) Specs Leak
Big chunks of salt to go with this report from "Maxim Boldson" at gamegpu.com, but I believe the broad strokes.
"Sony's next-generation portable gaming console, codenamed Project Canis and leaked as the PSP 3 Handheld, is slated for release in late 2027 and will feature full hardware support for PSSR 3.0 intelligent scaling and frame generation technology. The device is being designed specifically to support current PlayStation 5 desktop platform projects. The hardware platform for the new console is a custom 3-nm AMD Canis processor, combining six Zen 6 processor cores (four Zen 6c cores and two power-efficient Zen 6 LP cores), 24 GB of unified LPDDR5X RAM with a 192-bit bus, and a tightly limited thermal design power (TDP) ranging from 15 W to 25 W."
A lot of these hardware specs leaked last year from Tom at Moore's Law is Dead. Twenty-four gigabytes of RAM in 2027 sound preposterously expensive today—woof! What's new (to me at least) is the angle of PSSR 3 and targeting an internal resolution of 540p and then scaling up to 1080p with frame generation to boot. We just got PSSR 2.0 earlier this year and the results were spectacular. I am somewhat surprised that a version 3 would be ready by the end of next year.
The performance target makes sense though. Colin Moriarty and I just spoke about this and the PS5 eco mode push on The Max Frequency Podcast. Sony is Preparing the Way™ for portable and docked gaming once again.
It sounds like this hybrid console is the "standard" PlayStation 6 with a dedicated home console being the "Pro." An interesting split that sort of combines Nintendo's Switch consoles and Xbox's bifurcated Series line. Given the speculated cost, I don't think I'll go to the PS6 at launch. It's too much, especially after what I paid for the PS5 Pro. Granted, I seem to have gotten that console at a steal now. Sounds like the Pro is selling out with Grand Theft Auto VI on the horizon.
