"According to our sources familiar with the project, Media Molecule’s next game is set to be unveiled and released in 2027. As to what kind of game it is, it’s a social-simulation-type of game, one that’s inspired by titles such as Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon. We were also told it’s not a GaaS (games-as-a-service) title, though we wouldn’t be shocked if it had GaaS elements in it."

This sounds like a return to form in a handful of ways. First, we get a smaller scale than creating an entire user-facing game engine and platform for players to create entire video games. This gives shades of Little Big Planet with user created levels and the social aspect those games created.

Another is the vibe of Sony chasing Nintendo's dominance of a genre. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale anyone? I liked that game, so this isn't a knock at trying to enter the social sim space. I think this kind of game could serve the first-party well, especially with a dedicated handheld on the horizon. I think Media Molecule would fit right into this genre. Now, if the game doesn't sell and Sony doesn't put muscle behind it, I would fear for MM's survival.
