Sony Announces Snazzy AI Upscaling for Base PS5 Consoles
Last week, Sony surprised us all with the announcement that a smaller, leaner PSSR-like upscaler was being brought to regular PlayStation 5 consoles.
Today, we’re excited to announce Quick Spectral Super Resolution (QSSR): a new performance tier of AI upscaling. Born from Project Amethyst, our AI graphics collaboration with AMD, this quick new evolution of PSSR is built on two key innovations:
- A streamlined neural network architecture
- A hand-tuned implementation that maximizes performance on PS5
With these, we are bringing the benefits of AI-guided upscaling to PS5. While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, QSSR provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5.
The results are striking. This is a huge win for the millions of PS5 owners to get better image quality without having to hunt down the seemingly sold out PS5 Pro.1 I encourage you to check out the sample footage and Digital Foundry's hands-on preview.
But make no mistake. While QSSR is a boon for the current generation, Sony's push to make this pipeline is no doubt for the PS6 handheld rumored to launch next year. Same as the eco-mode for the PS5 titles. It's all about eking out every ounce of performance and image quality on as lean of a system as possible.
