Developer: Nintendo EAD
Publisher: Nintendo
Platform: GameCube
Release: September 16, 2002
Summary
The first entry in the iconic series brought to the North American and European markets with the power of the GameCube. Time marches ever forward as you work for a tanooki, pay off debt, and design your home and town. You could have three others live in the town with you and send letters to one another.
Acquisition
I won this copy for $12.01 on Goodwill's auction site. The shipping was almost as much as the game at $9.47. There was no memory card included and the spine plastic and art has damage, like a pet chewed or clawed at it.
Memories
I never played this one. This was a pure "for the collection" purchase. While this isn't my memory, I do always think of Brian Altano's dating story with this entry in particular. He told a longer version of it on IGN's Nintendo podcast, but I don't remember which episode (most likely during the Jose Otero era).
Brian and his then-girlfriend were long distance, so they mailed a GameCube memory card back and forth across the country, sending letters and gifts in the game to one another. When they broke up, the villagers kept asking Brian where she was, letters from her, etc. It's hilarious and sad at the same time.
