The oddest Paper Mario of the series. The 2D to 3D mechanic is novel and was exciting as a kid, but the approach turned the core gameplay into an light action platformer and not a turn-based RPG. It's humor feels "meme-y" and contextual, not timeless.

Graphics/Performance

  • BoxBoy ish art
  • Very TYD, computer, pixels trend of the mid 2000s
  • Paper is nowhere

Gameplay

  • We got a FLOATY jump
  • Why is there a score?
    • So score = EXP
  • Real time combat? Oh boy
  • No hammer. Definitely a platformer over a RPG
  • The Pixls revert back to 64 style partners of only granting new abilites
  • Peach IS playable! Bowser and Luigi too
  • Each playable character is used often it seems. Abilities spread out. Good pace. Solving puzzles.
  • Hammer is a Pixl?!
  • Bosses are so easy. Downside of real time
  • Final boss was so EASY

Music/Sound Design

  • TYD-y
  • Nothing that really stuck out to me

World

  • The generic characters are the opposite end of the “Toad Problem.” Wholly original design, but still generic. Lacks charm of Mushroom Kingdom
  • Unrecognizable design. Just blocky cartoons
  • Doesn’t seem to be “connected.” Flipside is a hub world in the truest sense. I get thag it is a dimensional journey, but the world seems to be disjointed
  • Boomer….
  • No air in space? What happened to 64 and TYD?
  • Space world maze is very BoxBoy
  • Sammer tourney not like Glitz Pit
  • Paper is practically nonexistent
  • 6-1 is BAD. 20 SLOW FIGHTS
  • Feels disconnected.
  • Flipside is bad hub world

Story

  • Totally a sequel to TYD in looks and initial vibe
  • Tippi is first sort of humble guide companion. We definitely have them in OK and CS
  • Chunky set up. Not really commected. Just “Go!”
  • Chapter 1-1, 1-2, etc. interesting
  • Writing is very tech focused. Very fourth wall. Zanny
  • Some sort of story between the dark dimension scene before going back to Mario. Love story?
  • 6 and 7 feel so long because they are intertwined
