Max Roberts 00:00 Hello, everybody, and welcome to the Max Frequency Podcast.

Max Roberts 00:02 I am your host, Max Roberts, and I have the pleasure and privilege of having back on the show Mr.

Max Roberts 00:07 Colin Moriarty.

Max Roberts 00:08 Hello, Colin.

Colin Moriarty 00:09 Hey, good to see ya.

Colin Moriarty 00:10 Thanks for having me.

Max Roberts 00:11 It's great to talk to you again.

Max Roberts 00:13 It has been all just over four years.

Max Roberts 00:16 Last time we talked was in August of 22.

Max Roberts 00:21 before you got married a couple years, it was be a few months before I had a kid, so a lot's happened

Colin Moriarty 00:26 Yeah, I see a picture vaguely of a a woman and a baby in the background.

Colin Moriarty 00:29 I don't know if that's uh you and your wife and child maybe or yeah.

Max Roberts 00:32 Yep, yep, yep, there's a little family back there.

Colin Moriarty 00:33 Yeah

Max Roberts 00:34 She's four.

Max Roberts 00:35 She'll be four in a month, so it's

Colin Moriarty 00:36 Wow.

Colin Moriarty 00:37 Yeah, that's that's great.

Colin Moriarty 00:39 And then you got the you got like a craftsman kind of thing back there.

Colin Moriarty 00:41 You're gonna you're gonna do some

Max Roberts 00:42 That's my dad's toolbox, but inside is a bunch of cables.

Colin Moriarty 00:47 It's pretty cool.

Colin Moriarty 00:48 Uh those are I'm those are like super or they were super expensive, those uh craftsman Sears era, you know uh things.

Max Roberts 00:51 Yeah, they're all over the all over the place.

Colin Moriarty 00:55 Yeah, it's cool.

Colin Moriarty 00:56 Anyway, yeah, it's good to be here.

Colin Moriarty 00:57 Thanks for having me back.

Colin Moriarty 00:57 I didn't realize it was that long, but time flies, man.

Max Roberts 00:58 Neither did I.

Colin Moriarty 00:59 I

Colin Moriarty 01:00 As I get older, time just truncates into nothing.

Colin Moriarty 01:02 Um you know, high school felt like it was forever.

Max Roberts 01:03 Yeah.

Colin Moriarty 01:05 And then we and that's the equivalent of the last time we had spoken.

Max Roberts 01:10 That's a good way to frame it because I think it's so crazy.

Max Roberts 01:13 There was a picture that popped up today when she was a baby, and I'm like, oh, now you're running around talking and bossing me around.

Max Roberts 01:18 It's crazy.

Max Roberts 01:18 Time is like a flat circle in a way.

Max Roberts 01:21 And

Max Roberts 01:21 other things that kind of put it into perspective.

Max Roberts 01:24 Uh we talked about, you know, at the time we were very excited for what we were calling factions too, Last of Us Online.

Max Roberts 01:31 We're like, this will be great.

Max Roberts 01:32 They're gonna be slam dunk.

Max Roberts 01:34 That game's gone

Colin Moriarty 01:35 Yeah, it's too bad, man.

Max Roberts 01:35 Uh it's so bad.

Colin Moriarty 01:37 Yeah.

Max Roberts 01:38 It sucks so much.

Colin Moriarty 01:39 Yeah, I've talked a lot I've talked a lot uh you know, to quite a bit behind the scenes to people that have that were are familiar with it and played it.

Colin Moriarty 01:45 It's too bad.

Colin Moriarty 01:46 Yeah, it sounded like it was gonna be really great.

Colin Moriarty 01:48 But I under I understand their their frame of thinking.

Colin Moriarty 01:51 I just don't know why they didn't figure that out sooner.

Colin Moriarty 01:53 But

Max Roberts 01:54 It feels obvious on the outside, and I don't I guess we won't really know until someone maybe talks about it one day, far, far down the line, or something, but there's there's a bigger story there for sure.

Max Roberts 02:07 you know, uh what they're doing with uh Hunter's Gathering feels like they could have done that maybe with online, but maybe online was too far along to have all that live service stuff stripped out or something.

Max Roberts 02:18 I don't know, but it's a shame.

Colin Moriarty 02:19 Yeah, I don't know.

Colin Moriarty 02:20 I don't know.

Colin Moriarty 02:21 It is it is a shame.

Colin Moriarty 02:22 It is a shame.

Colin Moriarty 02:22 So yeah, we lament the the loss of that game and we have no, you know, Intergalactic will maybe be next year.

Colin Moriarty 02:28 I don't I don't really know.

Colin Moriarty 02:29 So um

Max Roberts 02:29 I would hope.

Max Roberts 02:31 I would hope.

Max Roberts 02:31 It feels like it.

Max Roberts 02:32 Cause we also were saying we would like them to do a new IP next instead of part three um

Max Roberts 02:38 And so now we've we've essentially waited the entire PS5 generation for a new Naughty Dog game, something that wasn't uh a PS4 title, which is crazy to think about.

Colin Moriarty 02:49 Yeah, I mean really we haven't gotten a new Naughty Dog IP since the PS3 era, so it has been a a long a long time and

Max Roberts 02:53 Yep, yeah, for sure.

Colin Moriarty 02:57 Yeah, I'm looking forward to playing it.

Colin Moriarty 02:59 Um you know, I'm hearing great things about it too.

Colin Moriarty 03:02 So um yeah, um people time it's funny, man, like

Colin Moriarty 03:06 I've limit I've not lamented.

Colin Moriarty 03:08 I think it's for great.

Colin Moriarty 03:09 It'd say whatever you want, but it's like people just loose lips, man.

Colin Moriarty 03:12 And I'm not talking about the people playing working on the game.

Colin Moriarty 03:14 I'm talking about people that play it.

Colin Moriarty 03:15 You know, that like go uh do like like t yeah, like people that go test it or go mess with it.

Max Roberts 03:15 Oh, like but like testers

Colin Moriarty 03:20 And then people that are familiar with what those people did and all the r it's like it's like a lot of

Colin Moriarty 03:24 like concentric circles.

Colin Moriarty 03:25 And it's like damn, I'm surprised by how like eager people are to talk about this shit.

Colin Moriarty 03:28 Because I know you're NDA'd.

Colin Moriarty 03:30 Yeah.

Max Roberts 03:30 Oh yeah, for sure.

Colin Moriarty 03:30 I know you are.

Max Roberts 03:31 It's I mean, just the few handful of times I've gotten review codes, I know I'm not supposed to s you know, I remember

Max Roberts 03:37 This is back so God of War 2018.

Max Roberts 03:39 I was working at IGN at the time and did the guide and uh Sam Claiborne somehow got me an extra code and I was ended out the wazoo.

Max Roberts 03:47 Like my PlayStation couldn't even touch the internet.

Max Roberts 03:49 They were like, you

Colin Moriarty 03:49 Yeah, they're weird about that shit too.

Colin Moriarty 03:51 Like, I don't really understand that personally.

Colin Moriarty 03:52 They're like, hide your trophies and

Max Roberts 03:54 Mm-hmm.

Colin Moriarty 03:54 And I'm like, who cares?

Colin Moriarty 03:56 Yeah, it's like whatever.

Colin Moriarty 03:58 But yeah, I don't I don't have to worry about that anymore.

Colin Moriarty 04:00 I mean they still I I j I have emails for Wolverine.

Colin Moriarty 04:04 We're recording this in late August.

Colin Moriarty 04:05 I don't know when you're gonna put it up, but um that game comes out somewhat soon and they're they're ready to go and it's like uh yeah, I have to kind of um directionally send codes to other people because I don't want them.

Colin Moriarty 04:15 You know, I I'm I'm glad being out of the like

Colin Moriarty 04:18 It is peaceful and restful being out out of the game.

Colin Moriarty 04:21 Um so yeah, anyway.

Max Roberts 04:24 Yeah.

Max Roberts 04:25 I think it also just lets you review a game however you want without stipulations or having to hit a timeline, like uh embargoes up here.

Max Roberts 04:33 Like you don't

Max Roberts 04:34 Th th your audience cares about what you have to say, not when the embargo lifts.

Max Roberts 04:39 Like if they want to know

Colin Moriarty 04:39 Yeah, I think one of the reasons I'm sorry to interrupt.

Colin Moriarty 04:41 Go ahead.

Max Roberts 04:42 When the embargo lifts, you can go you can go to an IGN or Digital Foundry and find out like what you want to know about the game.

Colin Moriarty 04:42 Pardon me.

Max Roberts 04:47 But if you want Colin Moriarty or Dustin Furman or um

Max Roberts 04:51 Oh my gosh.

Max Roberts 04:52 Why am I Chris Chris's opinion?

Max Roberts 04:54 Then you should you wait for sacred symbols.

Colin Moriarty 04:57 Tris is the one you forgot and he's not gonna like that.

Colin Moriarty 04:59 Um

Colin Moriarty 05:01 Yeah, uh yes.

Colin Moriarty 05:03 And I also just think that when I was certainly when I was at IGM, but when I was at kind of funny as well, like it people IGM not so much, but people even at Kind of Funny are like, you don't play enough games, you don't do I'm like I kinda

Colin Moriarty 05:15 kind of feel paralyzed by literally getting free games codes every day, basically.

Max Roberts 05:23 Yeah.

Colin Moriarty 05:23 It's just strange to like you won't want to look a gift horse in the mouth, of course, and I appreciate that.

Colin Moriarty 05:28 But I would rather just interact with the industry as a steward of like what I feel like is

Colin Moriarty 05:37 decent taste and a knowledge of the industry without having to like hit these embargoes and rush and crush everything into these time.

Colin Moriarty 05:44 And that's why I really appreciate what Sony usually does and a few other publishers do it too, where they give you plenty of time.

Colin Moriarty 05:48 Like

Colin Moriarty 05:48 There's no excuse for you to not have platinum Wolverine by the time the embargo lifts.

Colin Moriarty 05:52 And that also shows a level of confidence in the game as well.

Colin Moriarty 05:55 But it's it's hard for people to understand wanting to get out of that when you're when you're

Colin Moriarty 06:01 When you're not in it and I was in it for so long, and I'm like, yeah, it's cool, like anything else.

Colin Moriarty 06:05 Like it's probably pretty cool to play professional baseball, and then maybe it gets a little old after a while.

Colin Moriarty 06:08 You know, I don't I don't I don't I don't know.

Max Roberts 06:09 Maybe.

Colin Moriarty 06:10 You know, I don't know.

Colin Moriarty 06:11 Um

Max Roberts 06:12 Paychecks a little different.

Colin Moriarty 06:12 So yeah, yeah, the pay tech is nice.

Colin Moriarty 06:15 Yeah, even the minimum pay pay.

Colin Moriarty 06:17 It's the same thing with the NFL I was reading, like the minimum this year, the minimum veteran salary in the NFL is over a million.

Colin Moriarty 06:23 You know, it's like you can't now it's five hundred thousand dollars after taxes and your agent and all that, but it's like not so bad.

Colin Moriarty 06:28 Not so bad.

Max Roberts 06:29 Not bad at all.

Colin Moriarty 06:29 Play again.

Max Roberts 06:30 Not bad at all.

Max Roberts 06:31 Uh but also the m the the the reason you're back, the the main reason is what I've dubbed PSN Hack two point oh

Max Roberts 06:41 Your account was hacked back in May, May 18th, 2026.

Max Roberts 06:45 And it's led to kind of this whole journey that has timed

Max Roberts 06:49 maybe not serendipitously, but it's timed with a lot of announcements from Sony about the future with the PlayStation 6 and kind of opened the eyes to a lot of issues with

Max Roberts 07:00 online accounts and ownership and things like that.

Max Roberts 07:03 And you had put out a tweet at some point between all of this saying like, I will talk about this anywhere with anyone.

Max Roberts 07:10 And I was like, well, this would be a great excuse to to have Colin back.

Max Roberts 07:13 and talk about things because obviously this is a huge issue and it's actually something that I've not the accounts being stolen angle.

Max Roberts 07:22 But I've been aware about the whole licensing thing.

Max Roberts 07:25 Uh I think much sooner than I would say the average consumer.

Max Roberts 07:28 Uh I'm not sure if you're this would have been after

Max Roberts 07:31 you would have been watching Nickelodeon.

Max Roberts 07:33 But are you familiar at all with the show they did called Mr Meaty?

Colin Moriarty 07:38 No, that's af that's after my time, yeah.

Max Roberts 07:39 Yeah, way after.

Max Roberts 07:40 It was it was a puppet show about teenagers who work in a fast food restaurant in a mall.

Max Roberts 07:45 Shenanigans go on.

Max Roberts 07:46 And I had bought this show on iTunes back in the day to play on my iPod.

Max Roberts 07:50 Uh and at some point the show is just gone from my purchases.

Max Roberts 07:55 Just evaporated.

Max Roberts 07:56 And it's at some point Viacom

Max Roberts 07:58 Paramount, whatever, whoever owned it, decided to delist the show.

Max Roberts 08:01 They were like, We don't want this out there anymore.

Max Roberts 08:03 No one o you can't buy the show anywhere now.

Max Roberts 08:06 And I have no access to those shows.

Max Roberts 08:08 or episodes that I paid.

Max Roberts 08:09 And I learned this lesson very early on that when you buy something online, you are buying a license, not the actual game.

Max Roberts 08:16 And

Max Roberts 08:17 I think this is kind of all tied up into your account.

Max Roberts 08:20 And so what I wanted to do was go over it, kind of catch my audience up with maybe what happened to you.

Max Roberts 08:26 Just a little bit if you would like to get a whole play-by-play of what happened.

Max Roberts 08:30 Um it's the episode 412 of Sacred Symbols.

Max Roberts 08:34 They disguise it, hypnotize it, you talk about like the whole if you want a play-by-play, I think that'd be a great place to go and listen

Max Roberts 08:40 But I thought maybe you could is that what it is?

Colin Moriarty 08:41 System of a down lyrics.

Colin Moriarty 08:44 Sorry, yeah, yeah.

Max Roberts 08:46 I know you always have a like s a reference or ch some something witty in the name of the episode.

Colin Moriarty 08:46 Sorry, go.

Max Roberts 08:52 So that's it's good to know that that's where it is.

Colin Moriarty 08:52 Yeah, I always I always name them after song like song lyrics.

Colin Moriarty 08:55 I don't know why.

Colin Moriarty 08:55 Just it's easier than it's actually really stupid for the show, but because it's it's like the show's titles are fucking nonsense, but nonetheless.

Max Roberts 09:03 I like knowing that now though.

Max Roberts 09:04 But so what happened?

Max Roberts 09:06 May eighteenth.

Max Roberts 09:07 Your account's gone.

Max Roberts 09:08 What?

Max Roberts 09:08 Walk the people through it just briefly.

Colin Moriarty 09:10 Yeah, so it's kind of an interesting tale in that well, maybe not, I don't know.

Colin Moriarty 09:16 But

Colin Moriarty 09:17 G accounts have been getting boosted for years on PSN, since the PS3 era.

Colin Moriarty 09:23 And as the biggest PlayStation kind of podcaster and like one of the gr biggest

Colin Moriarty 09:28 Media personalities in the PlayStation space, many people come to me all the time.

Colin Moriarty 09:31 It's like I was saying earlier about how people just tell me about all these games.

Colin Moriarty 09:33 Oh, you want I played fair games, you want to hear about it?

Colin Moriarty 09:35 It's like

Colin Moriarty 09:36 Uh you know, you hear about these things, people come to you with all sorts of shit.

Colin Moriarty 09:40 And you have to kind of filter through it.

Colin Moriarty 09:43 And

Colin Moriarty 09:45 I had been, I don't want to say bombarded, but you know, time and again over the years, people have been like, yo, these accounts are getting stolen and these accounts are getting boosted, and people are getting banned for no reason and all these kinds of things.

Colin Moriarty 09:54 And I'm like, well

Colin Moriarty 09:56 It's gotta be a reason why that's happening to you.

Colin Moriarty 09:58 And I think for some people there is a reason.

Colin Moriarty 10:00 Like I think some people are just it's the internet.

Colin Moriarty 10:03 It's like, what did you say?

Colin Moriarty 10:05 Should call someone the N-word or something?

Colin Moriarty 10:07 Like on on PSN or do something that got banned?

Colin Moriarty 10:09 And like there's some of that, obviously, with people.

Colin Moriarty 10:13 Um

Colin Moriarty 10:13 But what I came to realize, and it because it happened to me, was no, there are people that just manipulate it's called social engineering, and it manipul manipulate readily known information.

Colin Moriarty 10:25 about people to trick customer service or whatever into giving up a pr in this case a person's PlayStation Network account.

Colin Moriarty 10:34 Now we did a pretty deep audit like internally.

Colin Moriarty 10:37 By the way, like this is still kind of ongoing.

Colin Moriarty 10:39 There are a lot of things I've never talked about.

Colin Moriarty 10:41 Um I am kind of not kind of, I am cooperating with Sony on a lot of things and have been for months and talking to them behind the scenes.

Colin Moriarty 10:48 It's why we haven't really covered it more deeply because I'm kind of there are things that I understand and know, and there are also things that I just don't think are constructive to say, if that makes any sense.

Colin Moriarty 11:00 And that's one of the things that I tried to tell Sony, and they understand they understood this since May, is like I we have a we can have an adversary relationship with each other sometimes.

Colin Moriarty 11:07 I've been with, you know, I've been dealing with Sony and a lot of the people, specific people at that company since

Colin Moriarty 11:12 the PS3 and Vita era.

Colin Moriarty 11:13 So and PSP.

Colin Moriarty 11:15 A lot of the same people are still there and I've been talking to them.

Colin Moriarty 11:17 And I told them, I'm like, this isn't an adversarial thing.

Colin Moriarty 11:21 I want to help.

Colin Moriarty 11:23 Like maybe this is the straw that broke the camel's back.

Colin Moriarty 11:27 Should you allow it to be?

Colin Moriarty 11:29 Because it's really, as I've tried to explain to them and they understand, all in your hands.

Colin Moriarty 11:33 Right?

Colin Moriarty 11:33 Like

Colin Moriarty 11:34 You control the castle that you have the keys to the kingdom and you could do what you want with it.

Colin Moriarty 11:39 So that day

Colin Moriarty 11:42 So actually the weekend before, and this is where I kind of get into some of like the things that I don't talk about because I don't want to blow people's spots up and whatever, but like I was informed days before it happened to me that they were gonna try to do it.

Colin Moriarty 11:55 And like that this group was gonna try to go after my account.

Colin Moriarty 11:58 And honestly, I wasn't particularly worried about it because I was like, I don't know what you're gonna like what you're gonna do.

Colin Moriarty 12:03 You don't know the password.

Colin Moriarty 12:04 I have two-factor authentication.

Colin Moriarty 12:06 It's like you could

Colin Moriarty 12:08 You have my email address.

Colin Moriarty 12:10 But what it turned out was that's all you really need.

Colin Moriarty 12:13 And by the way, I mean this is the shit I haven't really gotten to talk about, so kind of an exclusive for your show or whatever is what we've learned is that they don't even need your email address.

Colin Moriarty 12:21 Like um so like they don't need any of that stuff.

Colin Moriarty 12:26 In fact, I know someone who got their a prominent person who got their account stolen, they never said anything about it publicly.

Colin Moriarty 12:31 They quietly got it back through Sony, and then their account got stolen again.

Max Roberts 12:35 Oh my gosh!

Colin Moriarty 12:36 And and everything had changed.

Colin Moriarty 12:37 Like, so like they had none of the same information.

Colin Moriarty 12:41 So I was warned by Person X, who has been a great source for me.

Colin Moriarty 12:47 Let's call him Person X.

Colin Moriarty 12:49 Um that like they're gonna make a move on you.

Colin Moriarty 12:52 And I was like, all right, and I didn't really think twice about it.

Colin Moriarty 12:54 And then they did.

Colin Moriarty 12:55 And we audited like the situation

Colin Moriarty 12:59 Some like some with information from Sony, but also like, you know, just figuring things out because we really had assumed at first, and it's what I said about the email address where

Colin Moriarty 13:09 We had assumed there was some sort of information that like I gave out that I shouldn't have given out.

Colin Moriarty 13:15 Like a transaction number or something.

Colin Moriarty 13:18 And what we realized was no

Colin Moriarty 13:20 None of that exists.

Colin Moriarty 13:21 The only thing that they pro they possibly could have had was an email address and then a ledger of prices and dates.

Colin Moriarty 13:29 That was what that was what they had.

Colin Moriarty 13:31 So like you could say

Colin Moriarty 13:33 This game I bought I spent $29.

Colin Moriarty 13:36 99 on this day.

Colin Moriarty 13:37 Here my email address is X.

Colin Moriarty 13:40 And they're like, okay.

Colin Moriarty 13:41 And then they shut off the two-factor authentication, changed the email address, and gave the account to this person.

Colin Moriarty 13:48 Um now because of my connections I got my account back within hours.

Colin Moriarty 13:54 Um Yes, and in fact the person who boosted the account seemed to have been aware that like

Max Roberts 13:54 Which is great.

Colin Moriarty 14:02 They lost the account a lot quicker than they had assumed because they've done this many, many, many, many, many times.

Colin Moriarty 14:06 And people do sometimes get their accounts back, but it takes sometimes weeks to do or more.

Colin Moriarty 14:13 So I got my account back like in no time at all.

Colin Moriarty 14:16 And it was at this point that I realized that and then by the way, like so what what these guys do is they'll steal PSN accounts and then they'll set they'll set um

Colin Moriarty 14:26 time bombs on them.

Colin Moriarty 14:27 And I don't know how much people know about this either.

Colin Moriarty 14:29 But like should you get your account back, what they will do is they will take your your your account before like the first thing they do is they'll just open it up and send them a bunch of messages with really bad shit in them.

Colin Moriarty 14:39 to just random accounts.

Colin Moriarty 14:41 And then what they'll do is they'll re to accounts they control.

Colin Moriarty 14:45 And then if they get you get your if you get your account back, then what they'll do is they'll just report all of it.

Colin Moriarty 14:49 And then your account will get permanently banned.

Max Roberts 14:50 Right.

Colin Moriarty 14:51 So I got my account back and then my account was permanently banned.

Colin Moriarty 14:55 Like I went online and was like PSN's like you're permanently banned, there's nothing we can do for you or whatever.

Colin Moriarty 14:58 Obviously that's nonsense.

Colin Moriarty 14:59 So

Colin Moriarty 14:59 Then the neck and by the way, that's a huge part of this, is like they can do whatever they want.

Colin Moriarty 15:03 I just want everyone to know like they can they can there's nothing stopping them from getting anyone's account back.

Colin Moriarty 15:07 That's an important thing for you to know.

Max Roberts 15:08 They being Sony.

Max Roberts 15:09 Sony can give anyone's account back.

Colin Moriarty 15:09 Yeah, there is nothing stopping them from going.

Colin Moriarty 15:12 I know like this is where it's like I know what the system's called.

Colin Moriarty 15:15 Like I have people have leaked me decks talking about the security issues and like the things that they're they're like

Max Roberts 15:18 Sure.

Colin Moriarty 15:21 This is the stuff that I don't get too deep into.

Colin Moriarty 15:23 But like publicly, because I don't think it's useful and I don't want I don't think people should know.

Max Roberts 15:27 Right.

Colin Moriarty 15:27 Although you can go figure it out yourself.

Colin Moriarty 15:29 The thing is that

Colin Moriarty 15:31 The system is so broken, open, that there is some indication that they might be there might I I can't verify this, but like that they might have people on the inside helping them.

Colin Moriarty 15:40 And I don't mean people at Sony, I mean people in these call centers in like foreign countries.

Colin Moriarty 15:45 If you're if you outsource your customer service to Malaysia and you're paying them five dollars a day

Colin Moriarty 15:54 Then it r or whatever.

Colin Moriarty 15:56 Then it really it doesn't take much for someone to be like, I'll give you a thousand dollars.

Colin Moriarty 16:01 Um and you can let me in a discount.

Colin Moriarty 16:03 And we th

Colin Moriarty 16:05 There is a thought that that is definitely something that's happening.

Colin Moriarty 16:07 And the reason that there's a thought that that's happening is not only should you not be able to gain access to people's accounts without their email address and things of this nature, so the person that got his account reboosted, but also that

Colin Moriarty 16:17 There's this entire how do I put this?

Colin Moriarty 16:22 There's videos and screenshots of the back end.

Colin Moriarty 16:25 Like there if you go and look, like you can see you I you can go look.

Colin Moriarty 16:29 Like you can see it exactly what it looks like, exactly the information they have in their system, the different layers of the systems.

Colin Moriarty 16:34 Like this stuff doesn't leak unless someone has access to that system and then leaks it.

Colin Moriarty 16:38 So

Colin Moriarty 16:38 I've tried to impress upon, and I think successfully on Sony that like you have big problems.

Colin Moriarty 16:45 You have fucking really big problems.

Colin Moriarty 16:47 And

Colin Moriarty 16:48 As I've noted time and time again, I don't beat myself up too much for ignoring people before it happened to me because

Colin Moriarty 16:58 I have to discern what is important and what isn't.

Colin Moriarty 17:00 And I'm gonna make mistakes.

Colin Moriarty 17:02 It's like when Shuhei didn't publish Demon's Souls in the West.

Colin Moriarty 17:06 It's like every once in a while, like you just you just miss, right?

Colin Moriarty 17:09 And I missed.

Colin Moriarty 17:10 So

Colin Moriarty 17:11 I thought that that was a poor character play for me.

Colin Moriarty 17:14 And I said that the next big the next best thing that I can do, the next high character thing I can do is to make this an issue.

Colin Moriarty 17:22 Because as I've reiterated to people in the past, there I am not nearly the only f famous internet gaming person that had this happen to.

Colin Moriarty 17:30 I'm the only one that said anything about it.

Colin Moriarty 17:32 And the the more that

Colin Moriarty 17:34 The time goes and people just get the quietly get their accounts back, quietly work with it.

Colin Moriarty 17:37 Some people pay pay people off to get their shit back.

Colin Moriarty 17:40 A lot of money.

Max Roberts 17:41 I believe it.

Colin Moriarty 17:41 You know?

Colin Moriarty 17:42 Um

Colin Moriarty 17:43 These accounts on the black market go for thousands of dollars.

Colin Moriarty 17:46 They're on sale right now.

Colin Moriarty 17:48 Um so you can go on telegram telegram or whatever and find them

Colin Moriarty 17:54 I'm going all over the place, but I'm trying to explain everything to you.

Colin Moriarty 17:56 So like what what we so so these accounts can be basically they can take anyone's account they want.

Colin Moriarty 18:02 And um if all you need, so when we were auditing, like what did you do, Colin?

Colin Moriarty 18:07 Because originally I was like, what did I fucking do?

Colin Moriarty 18:09 Like I m like during the Vita era or something, I must have like tweeted out a receipt

Colin Moriarty 18:15 With like a n it's like no, none of that.

Colin Moriarty 18:17 They have dates and and prices, and I'm like, this is really bad.

Colin Moriarty 18:22 Because if all they need

Colin Moriarty 18:25 And this is what I think I was kind of like blowing people's minds when I was explaining this, both internally and externally, where I'm like, okay, if this is the only information they need, then when God of War Ghost uh Sons of Sparta came out, which was a g uh uh a stealth release

Colin Moriarty 18:37 And you have a trophy for the game on the day it came out, then you can guarantee you bought it that day.

Colin Moriarty 18:41 They therefore have all the information they need to call to call customer service and say I spent $29.

Colin Moriarty 18:47 99 on this day.

Colin Moriarty 18:50 My PSN account is this, I lost it, and you just have to find the weak link.

Colin Moriarty 18:53 It's not like all these people are dumb.

Colin Moriarty 18:55 You just have to f they and they keep calling

Colin Moriarty 18:57 You'll find people that like get emails every time you you're on every time you're on customer service call with them, you get an email to your account.

Colin Moriarty 19:03 So people get emails being like, thank you for calling customer service.

Colin Moriarty 19:06 And it's like it's like, yeah, because they're trying to hack your account.

Colin Moriarty 19:10 You know, um now the accounts they they don't go after anyone.

Colin Moriarty 19:15 They go after very specific people.

Colin Moriarty 19:17 Trophy hunters.

Colin Moriarty 19:19 Because people I and again I can't explain why any of this is valuable to be honest.

Colin Moriarty 19:23 But people with a lot of trophies, their counts can be worth thousands and thousands of dollars

Colin Moriarty 19:27 The people with that are famous like in the space like me, I also have a lot of trophies, but not nearly the amount of trophies.

Colin Moriarty 19:33 Like

Colin Moriarty 19:35 This happened quietly.

Colin Moriarty 19:36 I didn't say anything about it because I knew that they were fixing it behind the scenes, but like the biggest trophy hunter got his account stolen last week in the world.

Max Roberts 19:43 Oh, again, or is this a new because I know oh my goodness

Colin Moriarty 19:43 Um

Colin Moriarty 19:45 No, this is another guy.

Colin Moriarty 19:46 Because Hakum used to be the d Hakum used to be the guy and he never got his shit back until way later and he quit.

Max Roberts 19:52 Yeah.

Colin Moriarty 19:52 Then the guy that was above him got his account stolen.

Max Roberts 19:55 Yes.

Colin Moriarty 19:55 Then the guy that went above him got his account stolen

Colin Moriarty 19:58 So they so it's those people, then it's people with rare names.

Max Roberts 20:04 Yes.

Colin Moriarty 20:04 This is a big thing, specifically three-letter names.

Colin Moriarty 20:08 Like A B C one Two Three Ma Max, exactly.

Max Roberts 20:09 Yeah.

Max Roberts 20:11 At Max M A X, if I had the account max.

Colin Moriarty 20:15 Um

Max Roberts 20:16 I wish.

Max Roberts 20:17 Maybe not actually.

Colin Moriarty 20:17 Because the reason that they're valuable is not only because of those names, but because it indicates that you either got your name during the PSP era, like during the pre-order era, or like right when the PSP, because you had to have been there at the very beginning.

Colin Moriarty 20:28 That indicates to them that you not only do you have this rare name that would be useful, but that you probably have a shit ton of games going all the way back.

Colin Moriarty 20:34 So they target those people specifically.

Colin Moriarty 20:35 If you're like a newer person or a random person, you have really nothing to worry about because your account's useless to them.

Colin Moriarty 20:40 Um the thing that is frustrating is that Sony can just shut this down whenever they want.

Colin Moriarty 20:46 Like the accounts, they can they can kick everyone out of a cat an account.

Colin Moriarty 20:50 I know these things, like now.

Colin Moriarty 20:51 Right?

Colin Moriarty 20:52 Like so if you have an account

Colin Moriarty 20:53 And you call them, they can set it so that like everyone that's in it gets kicked out.

Colin Moriarty 20:57 So like and then they can reset anything they want.

Colin Moriarty 21:00 They can set it so you can't get banned.

Colin Moriarty 21:01 They can set it so that like nothing can happen to your account unless a per certain person signs off on it.

Colin Moriarty 21:05 All these different things, but

Colin Moriarty 21:07 W what I know full well and why I'm acting is because this is not something that's gonna be available to a lot of people.

Colin Moriarty 21:14 Because what ends up happening

Colin Moriarty 21:15 Is people basically lose these accounts get stolen, it pings pong-pongs back and forth, and then reasonably so, Sony argues that they don't really know who owns it anymore.

Colin Moriarty 21:25 And so they're like

Colin Moriarty 21:28 We can't do anything.

Colin Moriarty 21:30 At some point they like inevitably with everyone that gets their account stolen, if it ping-pongs back and forth for a while, they'll be like, we can't help you anymore.

Colin Moriarty 21:36 Because they just don't know.

Colin Moriarty 21:39 They don't know what's what.

Colin Moriarty 21:40 So my whole suggestion, I have I've had this, you know, omniblast of suggestions where part of them is like there should be real ID things that you don't shouldn't have to do it, but like you should be able to

Colin Moriarty 21:52 optionally attach a real identification to your account.

Colin Moriarty 21:56 And there should be a paper and pencil sort of like e you know if your account is compromised

Colin Moriarty 22:04 mm mail X, Y, and Z and a notarized statement and an identification and blah blah blah to this address in San Mateo.

Colin Moriarty 22:11 Give us one month or whatever, we'll look into it.

Colin Moriarty 22:14 The big thing that I've tried to tell Sony and I think that they're receptive to is like, listen, you're this was long before the disc thing and and i i even and so I didn't really know what the PS6 console was gonna be, but I I was arguing about the handheld specifically, where I was like, you're about to launch a a digital handheld like

Colin Moriarty 22:29 You can't have this.

Colin Moriarty 22:31 This needs to not happen anymore.

Colin Moriarty 22:35 And not only that, you need to reunite people that have gotten their shit stolen from them.

Colin Moriarty 22:39 And how you do that and how complicated that is is not an easy problem to solve.

Colin Moriarty 22:44 But you gotta try to do it because these are your people.

Colin Moriarty 22:47 Again, there's a relationship between the rarity and scarcity of what the account has and it getting stolen, indicating that these are your people.

Colin Moriarty 22:55 These aren't some casual

Colin Moriarty 22:57 Fly by night player.

Colin Moriarty 22:59 These are people if you have 20,000 platinum trophies like some of these guys do, it means you've set spent hundreds of thousands of dollars

Colin Moriarty 23:05 There's no ifs, ands, or buts about that.

Colin Moriarty 23:07 That's just the way it goes.

Colin Moriarty 23:08 And then they and then they say like your account's stolen and now it's gonna be on sale for on telegram for ten thousand dollars.

Colin Moriarty 23:12 By the way, we can see that the accounts on on are for sale, but we won't do anything about it.

Colin Moriarty 23:16 So it'll just be an account that exists and people can sign into

Colin Moriarty 23:19 And when it gets and when it gets transferred, then it's like, okay, yeah, now that that person just owns it, I guess.

Colin Moriarty 23:23 And that's why I keep impressing on people, no, like they can fix it.

Colin Moriarty 23:28 Like they can fix it.

Colin Moriarty 23:31 That there's no doubt in my mind about that.

Colin Moriarty 23:34 So it happened to me.

Colin Moriarty 23:36 So I know.

Colin Moriarty 23:37 Like I got the email that said you're permanently banned.

Colin Moriarty 23:39 There is no recourse.

Max Roberts 23:41 There was recourse.

Colin Moriarty 23:42 I'm not banned.

Colin Moriarty 23:43 You know, I like think about it.

Colin Moriarty 23:45 It's preposterous for these companies to be like it happened with Microsoft too, although they fixed it too when that guy said like his whole OneDrive account got deleted.

Max Roberts 23:50 Yes.

Max Roberts 23:53 Yes

Colin Moriarty 23:53 And it's like we can't do anything for you.

Colin Moriarty 23:54 And it's like, you're lying.

Colin Moriarty 23:55 You're lying.

Colin Moriarty 23:56 Yes, you can.

Colin Moriarty 23:57 And by the way, like you might have to get some bespoke engineer somewhere that knows how to do it, but you're lying.

Colin Moriarty 24:01 And

Colin Moriarty 24:02 Who the fuck would create a system in which the people who controlled the system reach brick walls where they can't do anything anymore?

Colin Moriarty 24:10 Does that make any sense?

Colin Moriarty 24:12 To anyone at all.

Colin Moriarty 24:13 No, of course not.

Colin Moriarty 24:14 It's nonsense.

Colin Moriarty 24:15 It's complete nonsense.

Colin Moriarty 24:16 There's no such thing as a permanent ban.

Colin Moriarty 24:17 There's no such thing as an account that can't be returned to you.

Colin Moriarty 24:20 There's no such thing as any of that shit.

Colin Moriarty 24:21 That's all optional.

Colin Moriarty 24:23 All in this backend system that is susceptible to not hacking, but social engineering.

Colin Moriarty 24:27 By the way, this was a quieter thing, was that PSN's fucked in a lot of different ways.

Colin Moriarty 24:35 So you know did do you know anything about the like the you know anything about like the game module like the things that have happened to the game modules and the recently played modules and everything on PSN recent months?

Max Roberts 24:36 You're telling me

Colin Moriarty 24:43 Have you seen any of this?

Colin Moriarty 24:44 Because this has been a quiet problem, but

Max Roberts 24:45 Mm-mm.

Max Roberts 24:48 You mean like on m like I boot I turn on my PS5 and it shows what I've recently been playing or what my friends have been playing?

Colin Moriarty 24:52 Yeah, so like it'll it'll like if you go to your profile it'll show like it'll be it'll have like four boxes.

Colin Moriarty 24:56 These are all boxes that are that's drag from different APIs.

Max Roberts 24:56 Mm-hmm.

Colin Moriarty 24:59 So like

Colin Moriarty 25:00 It's like here's your trophies that's on like one API.

Colin Moriarty 25:02 Here are the recent games you play with the hours.

Colin Moriarty 25:04 Here's like they hacked into those.

Max Roberts 25:07 Oh my gosh

Colin Moriarty 25:08 And they figured out that those were out in the open.

Colin Moriarty 25:12 As in like for anyone.

Colin Moriarty 25:14 And what they did.

Colin Moriarty 25:15 And now I think this is funny, admittedly.

Colin Moriarty 25:18 But it's also ridiculous that this was allowed to happen and Sony freaked out.

Colin Moriarty 25:22 That's why they pulled it all offline for a month.

Colin Moriarty 25:24 And the only reason people didn't really notice this is because no one really sees that stuff.

Colin Moriarty 25:27 But like they just started putting like sex shop simulator and all the shit into everyone's

Max Roberts 25:27 Yeah.

Max Roberts 25:32 Recently played.

Colin Moriarty 25:32 Let's reason like the most recently played, and then they would put something like 9,000 hours on it.

Colin Moriarty 25:37 Um so like they are the the openness of this system is disturbing.

Colin Moriarty 25:44 And um

Colin Moriarty 25:47 I really am trying so all of this leads us to me feeling like, well, I'm lucky.

Colin Moriarty 25:57 And a lot of people aren't.

Colin Moriarty 25:58 I have to do something.

Colin Moriarty 26:00 And so that's kind of what I've been trying to do is I've tried to I've been trying to be like activist Colin.

Colin Moriarty 26:05 Where um

Colin Moriarty 26:08 You know, I'm talking to Congress, my congressman, and that's ongoing.

Colin Moriarty 26:12 I've spent enormous amounts of time interacting with Sony about this stuff and uh

Colin Moriarty 26:17 Mm you know, I think big even bigger conversations are gonna be happening relatively soon about that and trying to shepherd some sort of solution.

Colin Moriarty 26:28 Because I don't think that this is a tenable situation and it can go incredibly haywire.

Colin Moriarty 26:34 And I understand, it's not they didn't tell me this, but I understand their position where

Colin Moriarty 26:39 They can't really acknowledge this stuff.

Colin Moriarty 26:42 Right?

Colin Moriarty 26:43 Like if you really think about it, it's like you gotta just fix it quietly because you're challenging people to basically break into your stuff.

Colin Moriarty 26:49 It's like fit fixed now.

Colin Moriarty 26:51 And then some guy's gonna be like, oh yeah?

Colin Moriarty 26:54 And then and yeah, like so you kind of just have to nip it in the bud in quiet ways, and I get that, and that's very unsatisfactory, but I want to ensure the audience that for what little power I have, and it's very little

Colin Moriarty 27:06 I am trying to be productive.

Colin Moriarty 27:08 Instead of complaining and bitching, which is all anyone ever does about anything, I'm trying to be proactive and help.

Colin Moriarty 27:16 Will it matter and work?

Colin Moriarty 27:17 I don't know.

Colin Moriarty 27:18 I really don't.

Colin Moriarty 27:19 And

Colin Moriarty 27:20 Um but I am I will say I am increasingly confident on both fronts that it's working.

Colin Moriarty 27:27 And in fact, like

Colin Moriarty 27:28 Based on things people have things that have been leaked to me, it's like I know Sony has already made a bunch of like fixes to like how they interact with

Colin Moriarty 27:37 customer service and like what they're supposed to be allowed to do and everything like that.

Colin Moriarty 27:40 So the disturbing thing is that people's accounts are still getting stolen, but hopefully it's making it much more difficult.

Max Roberts 27:45 Hopefully

Colin Moriarty 27:47 And by the way, people think it's like Colin's taking credit for these things, like when they hired anti-fraud specialists.

Colin Moriarty 27:51 I'm like, you can think whatever you want.

Colin Moriarty 27:53 I know like that they are eyes wide open on this shit because of what happened to me.

Colin Moriarty 27:57 Like I'm telling you.

Max Roberts 27:57 Yeah.

Colin Moriarty 27:58 So um so it's important to me that I am proactive and useful

Max Roberts 28:05 It remind when it happened to you and we y obviously you knew this, but as you shared the like

Max Roberts 28:12 You didn't click on a link, you didn't have a you know, you did all the things you're supposed to do.

Max Roberts 28:16 Have two factor authentication, all the all the things

Max Roberts 28:20 people are advised to do to secure their accounts.

Max Roberts 28:23 And it reminded me the term social engineering had come up and I went, oh, this is just like um this episode of Reply Awe, which was a podcast on Gimlet called The Snapchat Thief.

Max Roberts 28:34 And

Max Roberts 28:35 I don't know if you had heard this or not, but the the kind of the summary is the same exact tactic, uh, but for Snapchat where or other online social media accounts targeting what they would call OG accounts.

Max Roberts 28:47 And the the story is a girl had the account lizard and the account got stolen.

Max Roberts 28:54 And then

Max Roberts 28:56 She was being threatened because she got her account back.

Max Roberts 28:58 Snapchat quickly gave it back, and then this person had her phone number and started threatening her.

Max Roberts 29:03 But this this reporter on replyall kind of went down this rabbit hole of

Max Roberts 29:08 This is how people are stealing your online accounts, but primarily with a technique called sim swapping, which is

Max Roberts 29:15 Maybe harder now with eSIM, but the idea was is you would go to a phone store, you'd buy a SIM card, you'd call T-Mobile, you'd call Verizon and say, hey, I got a new phone and I need you to port my number over.

Max Roberts 29:26 And they would just port it over because you have whatever information you need.

Max Roberts 29:30 And then with the two-factor authentication being sent, oh, I forgot my password.

Max Roberts 29:34 And it gets sent to that new phone.

Max Roberts 29:36 And then Verizon or whatever would switch it back because they realized it was a mistake, but by then the accounts are already taken.

Max Roberts 29:43 They're already swapped.

Colin Moriarty 29:43 It's yeah, it's

Max Roberts 29:44 Emails are gone.

Colin Moriarty 29:45 The way all these companies interact with each other is dangerous because all you need to find is like the weak link.

Colin Moriarty 29:50 At least Sony only has to worry about itself.

Colin Moriarty 29:51 Unfortunately, Sony is the weak link.

Colin Moriarty 29:53 So um

Colin Moriarty 29:55 Like Sony security is is is ridiculous.

Colin Moriarty 29:59 And they're lucky, I think, that it ha it hasn't gotten worse than that a lot of the

Colin Moriarty 30:06 Reasonably so a lot of the people didn't want to antagonize or be be embarrassed or make fun of you know like a you know like so they just kept it to themselves.

Colin Moriarty 30:12 But I'm like, I can't do that

Colin Moriarty 30:14 Because I could have very easily just kept it to myself.

Colin Moriarty 30:16 It would have been solved maybe even quicker if I didn't do that.

Colin Moriarty 30:20 So but it just felt like the wrong move because I wanted to warn people

Colin Moriarty 30:25 that this anodyne information can like you're saying can be used against you because people are like, well you shouldn't have shared your.

Colin Moriarty 30:30 I'm like, dude, it's an email address.

Colin Moriarty 30:32 It's a fucking email address.

Colin Moriarty 30:34 You're supposed to share it.

Colin Moriarty 30:35 It's literally a thing that you use to correspond with other people

Max Roberts 30:38 Or a phone number.

Colin Moriarty 30:38 It to to act like we have to keep everything it's yeah and their phone number.

Colin Moriarty 30:42 It's like what are we what are we doing?

Colin Moriarty 30:43 Like first of all you can just search anyone's name and find their phone number and email address right now.

Colin Moriarty 30:46 You can get your I can get your phone number right now.

Colin Moriarty 30:48 It's like people it's it's what I always say.

Colin Moriarty 30:50 It's like, oh don't let anyone know where you live.

Colin Moriarty 30:51 It's like are you crazy?

Colin Moriarty 30:53 Like it's not the 90s.

Colin Moriarty 30:56 You know?

Colin Moriarty 30:57 You can find anything you want.

Colin Moriarty 30:59 And it's a matter of like you being a human being and not using it to your leverage and your advantage.

Colin Moriarty 31:06 But I can deal with the the the the the uh victim blaming because I I did a little bit of that before my account got stolen.

Colin Moriarty 31:12 So again, this is all just a a circle.

Colin Moriarty 31:16 Um and

Colin Moriarty 31:20 The one thing that I thought was really vital was to just not complain about it, but to do something about it.

Colin Moriarty 31:24 And um I don't know.

Colin Moriarty 31:27 I don't we can use a lot more of that, but and but again that was before all the disc stuff too.

Colin Moriarty 31:31 So I I think that that just made it

Colin Moriarty 31:33 for them a lot more acute.

Max Roberts 31:35 Yeah, I think

Max Roberts 31:37 So let's let's jump to the disk stuff because it feels intertwined especially with the PS6, just in general, like the handheld is obviously going to be digital a la PSP Go.

Max Roberts 31:48 Um

Max Roberts 31:49 And then the PS6 obviously isn't going to use Discs because a couple of months later Sony comes out and on the same day

Max Roberts 31:57 Same day uh announces both that there will be no more physical games starting 2028 that includes PS5 onward.

Max Roberts 32:06 uh and then obviously the psych.

Max Roberts 32:08 And that the PS3 and Vita stores are finally shutting down for real this time.

Max Roberts 32:12 You can't make us change our mind

Max Roberts 32:14 Very ballsy to do those two things on the same day.

Max Roberts 32:18 I get kind of why, but also like, here's your digital future.

Max Roberts 32:21 But when you pair that with the fact that your account is so vulnerable

Max Roberts 32:27 Is so vulnerable to being just taken and the thousands, potentially thousands of dollars, the thousands of hours, the trophies, all of the things can just be taken away without any proper

Max Roberts 32:39 any accessible recourse to the wider audience.

Max Roberts 32:43 It's crazy to think that you would just uh that your account could be so vulnerable and they're just like, trust us, you can you can spend your money here.

Max Roberts 32:51 All your stuff is gonna be safe.

Max Roberts 32:53 All your like just you you

Colin Moriarty 32:55 The problem is is that the the problem is that they they are right in that like they have 150 million active users and if you're the average person you have nothing to worry about.

Colin Moriarty 33:04 Like you really don't.

Colin Moriarty 33:05 It's because it's just a numbers game.

Colin Moriarty 33:07 It's like what I always say about uh everyone's credit cards have been leaked in some way.

Colin Moriarty 33:12 They're on the

Colin Moriarty 33:13 They're on the dark web somewhere.

Colin Moriarty 33:14 The only thing that's that stops them is that like when people buy and access these bundles, is that there's so much information that it's just a fucking lightning strike on who gets stolen, like who gets hit and who gets got.

Colin Moriarty 33:23 It's the same thing here.

Colin Moriarty 33:24 Like the thing that protects you is just anonymity.

Colin Moriarty 33:27 And uh I agree, and I think the disc thing is is strange because I just think it it heightened

Colin Moriarty 33:35 what people are already so nervous about, you know.

Colin Moriarty 33:38 Um and uh you know, I think people are drastically overreacting to it, but I think that like

Colin Moriarty 33:44 But I but I understand because I I don't yeah, teach their own.

Colin Moriarty 33:47 I if you want if you like physical games, cool.

Colin Moriarty 33:49 I I appreciate that.

Colin Moriarty 33:50 I just think that like this stuff's based on consumer behavior and whatnot too.

Colin Moriarty 33:53 I just think that like they go they don't go hand in hand very well at the time.

Max Roberts 33:57 Right.

Max Roberts 33:58 It's you know, I I you can see behind me.

Max Roberts 34:01 I've I've got hundreds of physical games.

Max Roberts 34:03 I love physical media, but I n

Max Roberts 34:06 I'm not dumb.

Max Roberts 34:07 I know this is what this was gonna happen.

Max Roberts 34:09 I just thought we were gonna have one more generation.

Max Roberts 34:11 They were just gonna be like, hey, going forward, this is what's gonna happen, you know.

Max Roberts 34:16 Make your men, you know.

Max Roberts 34:18 Make your uh make your peace with it and we're gonna move forward with this.

Max Roberts 34:22 But there's something just and and this is definitely because I'm I'm in the know I follow the industry.

Max Roberts 34:28 But there's just something unsettling about the idea that like no one's gonna come after my PSN account.

Max Roberts 34:34 It's you know it

Max Roberts 34:36 uh the name is is a Pokemon, it doesn't matter.

Max Roberts 34:39 No one cares about me and my 45 platinums.

Max Roberts 34:42 They don't.

Max Roberts 34:43 But the idea that it could happen and I have very little to do just doesn't fit

Max Roberts 34:48 I I don't feel comf you know what I'm saying?

Max Roberts 34:50 Like it's just like, oh, someone I guess yeah.

Colin Moriarty 34:50 It's unacceptable.

Colin Moriarty 34:51 There has it it's unacceptable.

Colin Moriarty 34:53 It's unacceptable

Colin Moriarty 34:56 I'll be even more extreme about it.

Colin Moriarty 34:57 It's like, like we said, I didn't get fished or anything like that.

Colin Moriarty 35:00 But even if you're like some doddering stupid person and you clicked on a bad link and you gave someone your password, you should still have recourse to get your shit back.

Max Roberts 35:05 Mm-hmm.

Colin Moriarty 35:07 But like people that get their stuff stolen for no through no fault of their own, it's comical.

Colin Moriarty 35:13 Like you they're victims, and then you're victimizing them again.

Colin Moriarty 35:19 Like you're the one that's supposed to be able to help them.

Colin Moriarty 35:22 And instead it's like, oh your shit got stolen.

Colin Moriarty 35:24 It's not your fault.

Colin Moriarty 35:25 You didn't do anything wrong.

Colin Moriarty 35:26 And we can't help you.

Colin Moriarty 35:28 It's like I don't know about that.

Colin Moriarty 35:30 And that's a major piece of why I am I've gone to Congress to try to

Colin Moriarty 35:36 prod someone to be like they can't do this anymore.

Colin Moriarty 35:39 And it and it has nothing you it's so great you brought up iTunes earlier.

Colin Moriarty 35:42 It's like it has nothing to do with games.

Colin Moriarty 35:44 It has to do with everything.

Colin Moriarty 35:46 It's a broad-based thing.

Colin Moriarty 35:48 Sony is like one of the smaller companies, actually, that you would have to deal with if you really wanted to deal with this thing.

Colin Moriarty 35:53 You would need to deal with Microsoft, you would need to deal with Amazon.

Colin Moriarty 35:57 And a bunch of other res you know, digital resellers.

Colin Moriarty 35:59 Yeah, exactly.

Colin Moriarty 36:00 Apple, right, of course.

Colin Moriarty 36:01 So I just it can't be this way anymore.

Colin Moriarty 36:07 And I understand that we all sign these EULAs.

Colin Moriarty 36:11 And no one reads them and they say things.

Colin Moriarty 36:13 By the way, just because you sign a EULA and it says something and you agree to it doesn't mean it's legal.

Colin Moriarty 36:18 Um and it certainly doesn't mean it's moral.

Colin Moriarty 36:21 If I made you sign a EULA and it said I can kill you, but you signed it.

Colin Moriarty 36:25 Does that mean I can kill you?

Colin Moriarty 36:26 No.

Colin Moriarty 36:27 Of course not.

Colin Moriarty 36:28 Now that's of course an extreme felony.

Colin Moriarty 36:31 But like, well, so is grand theft.

Max Roberts 36:31 Right.

Colin Moriarty 36:33 And um

Colin Moriarty 36:36 So like people use that as an excuse to be like, well, you can read what you saw and stuff, and I'm like, nah, sorry.

Colin Moriarty 36:40 In fact, they make these things so labyrinthian and on purpose.

Colin Moriarty 36:44 And I agree with you.

Colin Moriarty 36:45 Like I've known about licensing forever, but like that's because I'm in the industry and I'm in the space.

Colin Moriarty 36:50 And I also accept it.

Colin Moriarty 36:51 I don't even really give a shit.

Colin Moriarty 36:53 Just because I think that like well I I I care more now just because I know, you know, the the the digital game thing just needs to be fixed.

Colin Moriarty 36:59 But the idea that's like you don't really own this thing, we are giving you access to it.

Colin Moriarty 37:02 It's like

Colin Moriarty 37:03 That's fine, I just want the access in perpetuity.

Colin Moriarty 37:05 I don't have to own it.

Colin Moriarty 37:06 If that's like the in other words, if the onus is on this word of

Colin Moriarty 37:10 Oh, like, do I own it?

Colin Moriarty 37:12 Can I sell it?

Colin Moriarty 37:13 And trade?

Colin Moriarty 37:13 It's like who gives a fuck?

Colin Moriarty 37:14 All you want is the license in perpetuity.

Max Roberts 37:15 Right.

Colin Moriarty 37:18 And

Max Roberts 37:19 I would just like access to the thing that I paid for.

Colin Moriarty 37:22 Right, like you can't offer licenses in this ephemeral like well maybe one day it'll go away.

Colin Moriarty 37:30 It's like, no.

Colin Moriarty 37:31 This isn't I understand that those like like the agreement with the Nickelodeon show.

Colin Moriarty 37:35 I actually have a lot of patience for this because no one knew what the hell they were doing.

Colin Moriarty 37:38 So it like they were figuring out as they went along.

Colin Moriarty 37:40 It's like, oh uh

Colin Moriarty 37:42 Yeah, we'll renew the license in the future.

Colin Moriarty 37:44 And I'm like, all right, we'll see what.

Colin Moriarty 37:45 Like, and then and then they but it's like, no, that can't be a thing anymore.

Colin Moriarty 37:49 Licenses need to be permanent and transferable.

Colin Moriarty 37:52 And

Colin Moriarty 37:54 That's it.

Colin Moriarty 37:55 And so that's what what I've gone to Congress, you know, and and uh I'm working with my local congressman.

Colin Moriarty 38:00 Oh, excuse me, his office, his office.

Colin Moriarty 38:02 Um, and I'll probably be talking to them again in another week or so

Colin Moriarty 38:06 To just see Yeah, good, I'm sorry

Max Roberts 38:06 I wasn't I I was gonna say your t your timeline on the Congressman seems very swift.

Max Roberts 38:13 Um I mean really uh you uh the letter was

Max Roberts 38:16 in the middle of July, and then you you would just talk to them a week or so ago, the thirty minute meeting.

Max Roberts 38:22 So it seems like things are moving, at least they're responding swiftly.

Colin Moriarty 38:27 Right.

Colin Moriarty 38:27 And I think that like now congressmen's offices exist to placate their constituents.

Colin Moriarty 38:34 However, I'm

Colin Moriarty 38:36 I'm not stupid.

Colin Moriarty 38:37 I I talk to people for a living, and I think I can feel people out pretty well.

Colin Moriarty 38:41 I feel much less like it was a placation after I talked to them.

Colin Moriarty 38:45 Um

Colin Moriarty 38:47 They want to help.

Colin Moriarty 38:48 I mean they said that.

Colin Moriarty 38:49 Like I'm pretty sure verbatim.

Colin Moriarty 38:51 And I think that what they're trying to figure out is like, are they the best people?

Colin Moriarty 38:54 I I live in a a pretty red

Colin Moriarty 38:56 district, my republic my my representative is a Republican, but he's on like armed services and all these things.

Colin Moriarty 39:02 So he just might not be the appropriate person.

Colin Moriarty 39:04 And and a lot of the conversation was around like, well

Colin Moriarty 39:07 Who do we know?

Colin Moriarty 39:08 Like who's the people like is it a ways and means issue?

Colin Moriarty 39:11 Is it a commerce or tech issue?

Colin Moriarty 39:14 Who are like kind of the interesting congressmen in that guy's coalition and caucus that we can talk to?

Colin Moriarty 39:19 So a lot of it is gonna be and I'll probably end up going to Washington at some point.

Colin Moriarty 39:21 to hopefully meet with some people.

Colin Moriarty 39:23 So does it matter?

Colin Moriarty 39:25 I don't know.

Colin Moriarty 39:26 Is this like the vital thing that's happening in my district right now?

Colin Moriarty 39:29 No.

Colin Moriarty 39:30 Um am I confident that this guy talked to my congressman about it and got feedback and and y yeah.

Colin Moriarty 39:36 And now do I think it's because I have a following and um

Colin Moriarty 39:40 Even the guy at the end was like, oh, I you're on Rogan and stuff.

Colin Moriarty 39:43 Like things like that.

Colin Moriarty 39:44 And I'm like, yeah, whatever.

Colin Moriarty 39:46 Just like to keep keep it top of mind.

Max Roberts 39:47 Use it.

Colin Moriarty 39:49 You know, it's like, because I told him, I'm like, we are

Colin Moriarty 39:52 The person who solves that helps solve this problem or even just goes to bad for us is going to be a champion.

Colin Moriarty 39:56 It's going to look good for you.

Colin Moriarty 39:58 And

Colin Moriarty 39:59 Might be worth the political play to make that happen.

Colin Moriarty 40:02 It's a it's a thing that's outside of these, you know, boomers and these, you know, older people's purview, but and not mine.

Max Roberts 40:07 Right.

Max Roberts 40:08 Not yours.

Max Roberts 40:10 It's I would one of the things that I I was thinking about when kind of writing all, you know

Max Roberts 40:18 researching this and writing it was I was reminded of the uh you'll remember this when The Last of Us Part Two leaked

Max Roberts 40:27 Um infamously.

Max Roberts 40:29 Gosh, it was dark times.

Max Roberts 40:31 Um the way that the the kid, or I I believe the documentary referred to them as a k as a kid.

Max Roberts 40:37 But anyway, it was it was a single person.

Max Roberts 40:39 um got in through like the PS3 multiplayer servers.

Max Roberts 40:42 Like that's how they got into the Naughty Dog servers and then pulled all the content for the game.

Max Roberts 40:47 And it so then it's like, okay, Sony obviously wants to shut all this stuff down, right?

Max Roberts 40:53 Like to increase their security, they really need to bolster security both to their own stuff.

Max Roberts 40:58 And then for the consumers, and the the PS3 and the Vita are are a vector for that, along with customer service support.

Max Roberts 41:06 And

Max Roberts 41:07 As we move forward into this digital future that they are doing, because again, 150 million active users, who knows what the split is of digital PS5s versus physical ones, which would have forced that.

Max Roberts 41:19 you know, force the digital to go up.

Max Roberts 41:22 And then you want to sell a thousand dollar box where you can only buy things licensed digitally.

Max Roberts 41:28 It's like, okay, well let's let's kind of make all this stuff sort of better.

Max Roberts 41:33 I just I don't I think of like PS Now, which is just server farms of PS3s running things.

Max Roberts 41:42 Do you

Max Roberts 41:44 I don't know, like what I have all these I've actually been re-downloading stuff to my PS3 because it just died.

Max Roberts 41:50 So I've been dealing with the PS3 store, which is as bad as

Colin Moriarty 41:55 Oh PS3 is awful.

Max Roberts 41:55 It we oh it's so bad.

Colin Moriarty 41:57 I mean it's all I love the machine, but it's an awful experience to use.

Max Roberts 42:01 It's taken me so long.

Max Roberts 42:03 Um

Max Roberts 42:05 You know, I wonder if like that sort of thing even comes forward to my digital PS3 licenses, if they figure out emulation in that way someday or streaming it.

Max Roberts 42:15 Do those things carry over?

Max Roberts 42:16 Like

Max Roberts 42:17 What do we you know?

Max Roberts 42:21 I don't know.

Max Roberts 42:22 It just makes me think about this stuff in the way of

Max Roberts 42:25 What do I what licenses do I own?

Max Roberts 42:28 What what's going to carry forward in a sense of, I mean, am I going back and playing a ton of this stuff?

Max Roberts 42:33 Do I, you know, I'm downloading Remember Me.

Max Roberts 42:36 The Capcom game.

Colin Moriarty 42:37 Yeah, I platinum that back in the day.

Max Roberts 42:37 Am I gonna Am I gonna Mm-hmm

Colin Moriarty 42:38 Yeah, I remember that game.

Colin Moriarty 42:39 That was part that was that was a PlayStation second party game at one point at one time.

Colin Moriarty 42:43 And then they they kicked it out.

Max Roberts 42:45 Am I gonna go back and play that?

Max Roberts 42:47 I don't know.

Colin Moriarty 42:48 Maybe, I don't know, I don't think so.

Max Roberts 42:48 Maybe.

Max Roberts 42:49 Exact probably not.

Colin Moriarty 42:49 Don't not

Max Roberts 42:51 But

Max Roberts 42:54 I don't really know where this was going.

Max Roberts 42:55 I just I was I was thinking about how they were vulnerable in that way, and that's obviously part of it.

Colin Moriarty 42:59 Well, they are vulnerable.

Colin Moriarty 43:01 The thing I try to tell people though is I am of the firm belief that PS4 forward is fine and will probably in perpetuity be

Max Roberts 43:01 Right

Colin Moriarty 43:10 available generally until Sony goes away if it ever does.

Colin Moriarty 43:14 And you would imagine the licenses are all in order too, because one of the important things to note is that like games don't disappear through licensing issues almost ever.

Colin Moriarty 43:21 Um it's you and frankly, it's like usually the same publishers that do it.

Colin Moriarty 43:25 So like limited run games games disappear all the time because they they have these like ephemeral digital releases, but they want you to buy the physical release and all the rest.

Colin Moriarty 43:32 And then I think that happened with the Jurassic Park collection and a few other things.

Colin Moriarty 43:35 I'm not saying those go away, but even if they do when you bought it, you still have it.

Colin Moriarty 43:38 And so I think people are from 2013 onward worried about nothing.

Colin Moriarty 43:43 I really do believe that.

Colin Moriarty 43:45 Like

Colin Moriarty 43:46 And we're talking about licensing here.

Colin Moriarty 43:48 I'm not talking about the feasibility of you getting hacked or like the PSN and all that.

Colin Moriarty 43:51 I'm not talking about any of that.

Max Roberts 43:51 Right.

Colin Moriarty 43:52 But in terms of like, it's what I was saying about acting from a position of knowing what you knew at the time.

Colin Moriarty 43:57 And by that point, 13 years ago, they knew what they were doing.

Colin Moriarty 44:00 And the systems architectures and the licensing agreements and the interoperability of the machines, it all plays into the same

Colin Moriarty 44:07 It's the same PSN.

Colin Moriarty 44:09 The PS3's PSN is different.

Colin Moriarty 44:11 And it it runs differently.

Colin Moriarty 44:13 It's on a whole different thing.

Colin Moriarty 44:14 And the thing I try to impress upon people now, this is Sony's problem, and I think speaks to maybe some of their own ineptness, ineptitude.

Colin Moriarty 44:21 in some ways is if they could get these games on the PS4, they would.

Colin Moriarty 44:25 They would have done it years ago.

Colin Moriarty 44:26 They can't.

Colin Moriarty 44:28 Like

Colin Moriarty 44:29 They can't do it.

Colin Moriarty 44:30 They can't figure it out.

Colin Moriarty 44:31 There are people working on like uh I don't know if you know about uh the syrup engine and everything, like where there's people that are like work trying to figure out like these more reliable ways to get PS3 games specifically off of PS4.

Max Roberts 44:41 Yes.

Colin Moriarty 44:43 So

Colin Moriarty 44:44 For people that don't know out there, your audience, they might not know, it's like the cell architecture on PS3 was such that it could be readily manipulated and molded like clay.

Colin Moriarty 44:52 in these really unique and weird ways.

Colin Moriarty 44:54 And each each game kind of leveraged the architecture in really radically different ways.

Colin Moriarty 44:58 And it makes it virtually impossible to emulate it in a consistent way.

Colin Moriarty 45:02 You have to do it game by game by game.

Colin Moriarty 45:04 And and recently, I mean Metal Gear Solid 4 is on the verge of being relinquished from PS3, and that was a big lift.

Max Roberts 45:09 Finally.

Max Roberts 45:10 Yeah, it's

Colin Moriarty 45:10 You know, um so

Colin Moriarty 45:13 Part of me is like I get it because they're not stupid and this would have been they would have loved to have told you ten years ago, like yeah, PS3 games are on PS4 now, it's over, like don't even worry about it, they're never going away.

Colin Moriarty 45:23 It's like, yeah, but it's just

Colin Moriarty 45:25 It's not gonna happen and I think the only good news for PS3 players it's worse for Vita actually but for for PS3 players is

Colin Moriarty 45:32 We didn't I mean I did because I was getting all these codes, but no one was really playing a shit ton of digital stuff during during that era.

Colin Moriarty 45:38 There were the we were even I was playing off a disc during that era mostly, unless it was like, you know, sound shapes or something like that.

Colin Moriarty 45:45 Otherwise

Max Roberts 45:46 Rest in peace.

Colin Moriarty 45:46 I had a bunch of digital games, but they're not games you wouldn't necessarily want to go back to.

Colin Moriarty 45:49 I'm not trying to ex- I'm not trying to excuse a form of theft, which it is.

Colin Moriarty 45:53 Uh it's just like, yeah, I'm a little more patient with it.

Colin Moriarty 45:57 I have no patience for it now these days.

Colin Moriarty 46:00 It's sh it's you just gotta dot your I's and cross your T's, right?

Colin Moriarty 46:05 And I know that that's an easy thing to say, but everyone's gotta be on board from the publisher and IP and license holders all the way down.

Colin Moriarty 46:12 to the hardware manufacturers and into the player base where it's like, no, like these licenses simply can't be based on time parameters.

Colin Moriarty 46:18 There has to be some sort of holding company that understands that if you go out of business, the license needs to stay active and the package will remain on PlayStation Network.

Colin Moriarty 46:26 Like

Colin Moriarty 46:27 Even if it's like as of September 1st, all future games, you know what I mean?

Colin Moriarty 46:33 Like even if they can't retroactively do it, it's gotta start somewhere.

Colin Moriarty 46:36 Are you a sports fan by chance?

Max Roberts 46:37 Uh Formula One would be like the sport, but uh I I I can I can understand though.

Colin Moriarty 46:43 Well, I was gonna say the reference I always bring up is baseball and the salary cap.

Colin Moriarty 46:47 Where I'm like, yes, it's hard.

Colin Moriarty 46:49 But if you keep kicking the can down the road, it's only going to get worse.

Colin Moriarty 46:53 At some point, you gotta just do it.

Colin Moriarty 46:55 And then it'll be easier later.

Max Roberts 46:56 Yeah.

Colin Moriarty 46:58 But you're making it harder and you will still have to do it.

Max Roberts 46:58 Yes.

Colin Moriarty 47:00 The salary cap will come in at some point, and at some point the government, probably the European Commission.

Colin Moriarty 47:06 is gonna say, you can't do this anymore.

Colin Moriarty 47:09 And that will only force them to change things in Europe.

Colin Moriarty 47:11 But as I've noted many times, many things change in Europe and they change them globally because it's simply easier to do.

Colin Moriarty 47:16 The reason you have a fucking USB cord in your Apple phone uh right now in your iPhone right now is because of the European Commission.

Colin Moriarty 47:22 So so we we are relying on, I think, probably this foreign entity to ultimately do it.

Colin Moriarty 47:27 And I even talked to the Congresspeople where I was like

Colin Moriarty 47:30 I'm I know that it's gonna probably be them.

Colin Moriarty 47:32 But why not us?

Colin Moriarty 47:35 And I think the the answer is that none of the companies that are gonna be involved in this are European.

Colin Moriarty 47:40 So imagine like if you're a congressperson from uh Silicon Valley.

Colin Moriarty 47:45 Uh you're not gonna support any of this.

Colin Moriarty 47:48 Or if you're like from Washington, Kirkland.

Colin Moriarty 47:51 Right?

Colin Moriarty 47:51 And it's like you and it's like they're not you gotta you gotta go to the place where like they don't give a fuck.

Colin Moriarty 47:55 And uh Europe Europe has no companies.

Colin Moriarty 47:57 So so it's uh Spotify would probably be the biggest tech company over there that people really interact with and that's a subscription service.

Colin Moriarty 48:04 So

Max Roberts 48:04 And they and they are they go to bat uh for Apple and change over there all the the stuff with the DMA and Apple uh over there with

Max Roberts 48:13 app licensing and selling things on third party stores and marketplaces and cuts for our app developers, all of that was actually just seemingly settled, um, because the the European uh Commission

Max Roberts 48:26 It was like we finally got, I guess, what we wanted, which was we were here, but the terms don't seem all that much better for developers.

Max Roberts 48:33 Um, but that's a whole separate topic.

Max Roberts 48:35 They just kind of came in and

Max Roberts 48:37 blew it all up a little bit.

Max Roberts 48:39 And it's not different in the States yet, but different countries are going to Apple like, hey, we would like these.

Max Roberts 48:44 You know, Japan

Max Roberts 48:46 in other places.

Max Roberts 48:47 So it it is happening.

Max Roberts 48:48 It's it's targeting and this Apple's obviously much larger than Sony in this sense, but things gotta change.

Colin Moriarty 48:56 Yeah, I mean that's why you almost that's why like you kind of

Colin Moriarty 48:59 I'm like a vague appreciator of what Epic's been doing to Apple, but I do think that like like like with just suing them over everything and trying to like break them open.

Colin Moriarty 49:07 But like

Max Roberts 49:07 Yeah.

Colin Moriarty 49:09 I do want to say that I'm not an extremist in this regard.

Colin Moriarty 49:12 I do believe in closed ecosystems.

Max Roberts 49:14 Mm-hmm.

Colin Moriarty 49:14 I do think what makes Apple's ecosystem unique and good is that they control it.

Colin Moriarty 49:19 And this idea that it's like, oh, I should be able to because people really believe that like you should be able to buy a digital PSN game on like some on like Nueg and then put a code in.

Colin Moriarty 49:28 And then it's like, no, I don't, I don't have any problem with them not doing that.

Colin Moriarty 49:31 That doesn't even make any sense

Colin Moriarty 49:33 Well I'm not asking for them to br um in other words, I'm not asking for them to shatter their control.

Colin Moriarty 49:37 I'm asking them to respect the consumer.

Max Roberts 49:39 Yes.

Colin Moriarty 49:39 That's that's all I that's all I care about.

Max Roberts 49:40 I don't want I don't want Steam on my PS five.

Colin Moriarty 49:44 No, if you've got Steam on your PS5, it's over for Sony.

Max Roberts 49:44 Like oh, for sure.

Colin Moriarty 49:46 And I hope I hope people understand that.

Colin Moriarty 49:48 Like you gotta be careful about how far you're willing and wanting to push this.

Colin Moriarty 49:51 Because you push it enough to the point where Sony can't make any money or Microsoft can't make any money or whatever on these devices and you're d and it's over.

Colin Moriarty 49:57 Like dedicated console gaming is done

Colin Moriarty 49:59 And that's why with Helix, I knew, and they're talking about bring like the rumors are they're not really gonna do it, but I'm like that the Steam on Xbox thing makes no sense.

Colin Moriarty 50:06 What doesn't anyone understand about that?

Colin Moriarty 50:08 It's the stupidest idea I've ever heard.

Colin Moriarty 50:10 And I think Asha came in and was like, what

Colin Moriarty 50:12 Like, what are you doing?

Colin Moriarty 50:14 That we y you it's like the stupidest idea.

Max Roberts 50:16 Yeah, it's

Max Roberts 50:18 It's it's wild over there.

Max Roberts 50:20 Actually today, I don't know if you saw this, uh, but Xbox put up a blog post saying your discs are now also digital.

Max Roberts 50:26 And so they have announced that there's some s a system where I will be able to take my Xbox game

Max Roberts 50:31 put it into my Xbox with a disk drive and I get a digital license.

Max Roberts 50:35 Funny enough, the small the fine print says one revocable digital license per game disc.

Max Roberts 50:40 So somehow they have a unique identifier.

Max Roberts 50:43 A way to identify the disc, it seems.

Max Roberts 50:46 But I can pop in my copy of Third Picture Shows Gears 5 or whatever in my Xbox and then I have a digital copy of it.

Max Roberts 50:51 And I don't

Max Roberts 50:52 theoretically, we don't know fully how it works.

Max Roberts 50:54 I don't have to put the Gears disk in.

Max Roberts 50:56 Or they say it's like you can now play this on your your Xbox handheld PC or you can stream it in the cloud.

Max Roberts 51:03 Um and that's an interesting approach and it's something I

Max Roberts 51:07 would love to see Sony try and do where it's cause kind of the big thing for me, like I was I knew digital, all digital was coming, but I thought it wouldn't happen because PS5 was physical.

Max Roberts 51:19 And I just thought, well if they're gonna break

Max Roberts 51:21 They won't break back compatibility.

Max Roberts 51:23 Like my PS5 games will work on my PlayStation 6.

Max Roberts 51:27 So my thought was, oh, there will be a way to play my physical PS5 game on it.

Max Roberts 51:33 Because they don't want to break back compatibility.

Max Roberts 51:35 I'm not gonna go out and buy my The Last of Us Part Two remastered again because

Max Roberts 51:41 I own it on disk, so like why would I buy it digitally?

Max Roberts 51:44 But they they seemingly are just gonna break that and not they could change their mind.

Max Roberts 51:48 They could add, I thought it would be an attachable disk drive, and you could just pop it in and it's like a key essentially.

Max Roberts 51:53 It's like, oh, if I have this disk

Max Roberts 51:55 I can play this game.

Max Roberts 51:56 It's not running off the disc.

Max Roberts 51:57 I they haven't been running off the disc the entire generation.

Max Roberts 52:00 But I think this idea

Max Roberts 52:03 of like be being able to do something with it, uh, put a disc in and then be able to play it would be interesting, but it's in Xbox is doing it and it's in it's an easy win for them to say that because

Max Roberts 52:14 Uh they don't really have to shoot very high to get an easy win these days.

Colin Moriarty 52:18 Yeah, Sony, I don't think Sony to their to Microsoft credit, so I don't think Sony I mean I think people have been looking into it like I don't think Sony even can do this.

Colin Moriarty 52:25 Because I don't think I don't think there are like the individual identifiers on the discs.

Max Roberts 52:29 Yeah, I can see that

Colin Moriarty 52:29 Um so

Colin Moriarty 52:31 Um that's cool.

Colin Moriarty 52:33 Nothing's gonna save Microsoft.

Colin Moriarty 52:34 So I mean well, Microsoft's fine, but X the Xbox brand is gonna need a lot more than that.

Colin Moriarty 52:42 But I think yeah, so I just I want to be like there's like a a a sweet spot and where the companies are compliant towards a certain set of rules that allow

Colin Moriarty 52:54 Definite access to licenses.

Colin Moriarty 52:56 And I've even said, and I I like this is going to be a you know step two or three after we get all this stuff done, but it's like now what we have to consider is even if you're banned.

Colin Moriarty 53:05 Should you have access to your games?

Colin Moriarty 53:07 And my answer is yes.

Max Roberts 53:09 I feel like

Colin Moriarty 53:09 Sony can deny Sony can deny you service and say we don't want you, we don't want your business anymore.

Colin Moriarty 53:14 We're not gonna serve you on PS Plus.

Colin Moriarty 53:15 Maybe you can't even play online, but you have access to everything you bought.

Colin Moriarty 53:19 Um I again I don't care what's in the EULA.

Colin Moriarty 53:23 We have to do what is like best for the consumer.

Colin Moriarty 53:24 And by the way, what's best for Sony is for everyone to buy digital games.

Colin Moriarty 53:28 So they have to like give a little bit.

Colin Moriarty 53:31 If that if that's gonna be the case.

Colin Moriarty 53:32 That's why the diss situation is so many people are flummoxed by it but I'm like, I don't think you understand the economy of this.

Colin Moriarty 53:38 Like this this is this is gonna make them so much money and th and if there's a few people that stop playing because of digital like they don't care.

Colin Moriarty 53:45 Like they they don't know, you know, I'm not sure if you're not sure.

Max Roberts 53:45 Oh absolutely.

Max Roberts 53:46 They'll m immediately be making thirty percent on any third party game, just automatically.

Max Roberts 53:54 Because, you know, if I go buy Madden physically, they they get a smaller cut than that.

Max Roberts 53:58 But then if they can 100% on all their games, you know, Wolverine comes out and I buy it digitally, they get 100% of that.

Max Roberts 54:06 So of course they want you to buy all digital.

Max Roberts 54:08 It's like it's the most obvious thing.

Max Roberts 54:10 And they're not spending all the money printing the discs, shipping them, manufacturing packaging.

Max Roberts 54:14 Well, maybe still packaging if they do the code in a box at your Best Buy or whatever.

Colin Moriarty 54:17 Yeah, they have to do well, they have to do the code in the boxing because they're gonna get sued if they don't.

Colin Moriarty 54:21 And that's that's why everyone's like, why are they still doing the code?

Colin Moriarty 54:25 I'm like, because they don't want to get like people are already trying to sue them, and I'm like, you can't compel them to make a disc

Colin Moriarty 54:29 All you can do is compel them to maybe sell things in a third and to to to remove their own walled monopoly to like sell the codes.

Colin Moriarty 54:36 But other than that, you can't do anything.

Max Roberts 54:37 Do you uh Grand Theft Auto six is leaking out the wazoo of the past, I don't know, two weeks or whatever.

Max Roberts 54:43 And I've I followed little bits of it and seen clips of gameplay, I'll wait till tomorrow when I watch it on YouTube later or whatever.

Max Roberts 54:50 But

Max Roberts 54:51 I and so I don't know if it's a part of all of the leaks up to this point, but initially they were like, and this is so Rockstar, we'll print the game on the disc.

Max Roberts 54:57 But also, here's our crypto coin, please go invest or whatever.

Colin Moriarty 55:01 Yeah, and I'm sure Rockstar's gonna definitely definitely uh do that by the barrel of a gun, no doubt about it.

Max Roberts 55:07 For sure.

Max Roberts 55:08 And it it made me think of The Last of Us Part Two also being leaked and

Max Roberts 55:12 At least what Neil said in the documentary was the kid just wanted them to put the game out for the first date instead of the the delayed date or whatever.

Max Roberts 55:19 And it's like the hacks, th these demands aren't gonna change these companies' minds.

Max Roberts 55:23 They see

Max Roberts 55:24 the spreadsheet they know and they need to make they want to make more money and so they're gonna do the thing that's obvious to them to make more money.

Max Roberts 55:31 My desire to buy a piece of you know a disc is not going to change their mind.

Max Roberts 55:39 It's not gonna do it.

Colin Moriarty 55:40 Yeah.

Max Roberts 55:40 No petition, none of it.

Colin Moriarty 55:40 Well I I th that this that this thing is just w I I get it, it's like it's just it's it's not

Colin Moriarty 55:47 It's not gonna happen.

Colin Moriarty 55:49 And and the Am I surprised by it?

Colin Moriarty 55:53 Yeah, mostly I mean I've said this ad nauseum to my audience, but it's like I'm surprised by it just because I would have wrung you guys dry if I were them

Colin Moriarty 56:00 But but they don't but they don't want we're seriously I've been like the games are a hundred bucks now or eighty bucks like or like every physical game is twenty dollars more now like like you could have done anything you could have charged right right exactly and

Max Roberts 56:04 Well, Nintendo's doing that.

Max Roberts 56:11 Mm-hmm.

Colin Moriarty 56:13 That they didn't want to do that, I think, I think that just says to them, probably that first of all, that's gonna be tough PR.

Colin Moriarty 56:19 But also, and I think they realize that like if you're gonna take tough PR, you might as well take really tough PR and just get it over with.

Colin Moriarty 56:26 Um

Colin Moriarty 56:27 And I think the most important thing to note is that, and this really began somewhat with the PS2 and the GameCube and the Xbox, especially, but certainly by the PS3 generation and the Xbox 360 generation, they know everything you do.

Colin Moriarty 56:39 They they have data on all of your behavior as an individual and collectively, and they wouldn't make these decisions if the data didn't indicate to them that they were relatively safe doing so.

Colin Moriarty 56:49 And as people will see when they see the

Colin Moriarty 56:51 Financials undoubtedly that will end September thirty, it's not gonna have any effect on them at all.

Colin Moriarty 56:57 In fact, they'll just make more money now, I think, because

Colin Moriarty 57:02 A physical gamer is worth about as at for full-price games based on splits and whatnot, about half of what a digital gamer is.

Colin Moriarty 57:10 And this is the argument I was making about a level of subsidy.

Colin Moriarty 57:14 Where I'm like, a clever mar a clever PR person, or i i it w it's more than that, but it's they could have finagled communications in such a way that they were like

Colin Moriarty 57:23 We can't ask our our majority of our audience to subsidize this space anymore for you.

Colin Moriarty 57:28 But then I would have said comma.

Colin Moriarty 57:31 So all physical games are $20 more now.

Colin Moriarty 57:34 The d the disk drive is going up a hundred dollars and so on and so forth.

Colin Moriarty 57:38 Like whatever.

Colin Moriarty 57:39 That's why I'm so there was an interstitial step.

Colin Moriarty 57:41 I also think that there is a way I I could care less if the PS6 has a disk drive.

Colin Moriarty 57:45 Like, period.

Colin Moriarty 57:46 Um but

Colin Moriarty 57:48 I think there is a way for them to still save this for PS5.

Colin Moriarty 57:52 I do think that it becomes increasingly unlikely.

Colin Moriarty 57:54 But the reality is this is a complicated situation, Max, because

Colin Moriarty 57:59 They can't acknowledge the new machine.

Colin Moriarty 58:01 So they can't talk about it.

Colin Moriarty 58:03 Like it was weird in the Wall Street Journal interview that Hiroki Totoki did last week where he kind of acknowledged it.

Max Roberts 58:09 Yeah.

Max Roberts 58:10 I was I was just thinking you were t you in your talks with Sony earlier in the in this recording you mentioned you were like, you guys are getting ready to release a handheld.

Max Roberts 58:18 And they're like, ah I assume the reaction was like, um

Colin Moriarty 58:19 Yeah, they just look they just like look at me or smile.

Max Roberts 58:22 Yeah, like a little wink and a nod, like, you know, but we can't say it.

Colin Moriarty 58:22 You know, they don't ever they don't ever tell me.

Colin Moriarty 58:23 Yeah.

Colin Moriarty 58:26 Yeah, like um the games that have the eco like leaf icon on PS5 right now are are games that are patched for the PS6 handle or ready for it.

Max Roberts 58:38 Yep.

Colin Moriarty 58:38 That's what it is.

Max Roberts 58:39 I remember uh Sons of Sparta has an eco mode.

Colin Moriarty 58:39 Um so Yeah.

Colin Moriarty 58:44 And so it's like those are games that are that's like to be like, that's good for the environment.

Colin Moriarty 58:48 It's it's good for the power usage of the PS6.

Colin Moriarty 58:50 That's why it's happening.

Colin Moriarty 58:51 Um so

Colin Moriarty 58:52 the panheld anyway.

Colin Moriarty 58:55 But I think what what were we saying before that?

Colin Moriarty 58:59 I don't want to get distracted off the off the the uh beaten path or maybe it doesn't even matter.

Max Roberts 59:01 Um I already forgot to.

Colin Moriarty 59:04 I'm all I'm all over the place anyway.

Max Roberts 59:05 I'm with you.

Max Roberts 59:06 I'm with

Colin Moriarty 59:07 But the th now, like, there are a lot of things that are going on.

Colin Moriarty 59:11 Like the Grand Theft Auto thing, I think, is fascinating, just the pricing thing alone fascinates me.

Colin Moriarty 59:16 Um

Max Roberts 59:17 The fact that the hundred dollar version is selling better or what pricing that it's

Colin Moriarty 59:21 Well, no.

Colin Moriarty 59:22 Like I people are mad at me not right now because I was like, you basically should get a new hobby if you can't, if you don't want if you want Grand Theft Auto and you're not willing to pay $80 for it, then you're divorced from all reality of

Max Roberts 59:32 I think Grant Theft Auto should cost more.

Colin Moriarty 59:34 Yeah, yeah, like well people are mad about like people are mad about that, but I'm like, Grand Theft Auto 3 or Grand Theft Auto Well for Grand Theft Auto 3 it was fifty dollars.

Colin Moriarty 59:41 Grand Theft Auto 4 and 5 were 60.

Colin Moriarty 59:45 And uh that was thirteen and nineteen years ago.

Colin Moriarty 59:49 And they're asking you to pay another twenty dollars more than that.

Colin Moriarty 59:53 And it's like the end of the world.

Colin Moriarty 59:55 And I I think what it's revealed to me, and this is what I've said to my audience, is it's revealed to me that a lot of people are buying and spending money that they shouldn't be spending.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:02 Because it it shouldn't be this complicated.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:05 And like

Colin Moriarty 01:00:08 You sh I I worry about people's finances sometimes just where it's like, why is this if this is such a problem for you, you really should just save your money completely, in my opinion.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:17 Um

Colin Moriarty 01:00:18 But people make it everyone's problem.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:20 That's the thing that that happens with, and you'll see with there's there is no price sensitivity with Grand Theft Auto 6.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:25 None.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:26 Zero.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:26 You'll see that when the game comes out.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:28 No one gives a fuck that it's $80.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:30 No one.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:31 Only only performative people online think it's inappropriate to charge $80 for Grand Theft Auto 6.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:37 And um

Colin Moriarty 01:00:40 So that like you have to find a way forward.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:44 And I think this is going to be the challenge for a lot of these companies, is find a way forward to be like econom like an economic steward of your space.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:50 But also make sure they give people plenty of value.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:53 And the the good news with gaming is that it's from a software angle never been cheaper to play games.

Colin Moriarty 01:00:58 And the games have never been bigger, never been more immersive.

Colin Moriarty 01:01:02 And

Colin Moriarty 01:01:03 You don't even have to spend any money if you don't want to.

Colin Moriarty 01:01:06 You can basically play endless, endless, endless amounts of games for nothing.

Colin Moriarty 01:01:10 Um now of course that is the situation that gave us the

Colin Moriarty 01:01:14 you know, poverty gaming basically, um, which I don't think is good for AAA console gaming.

Colin Moriarty 01:01:18 Um and I think those two things are becoming conflated with each other, and that's too bad because that will drag down console gaming.

Colin Moriarty 01:01:24 But I also think that like

Colin Moriarty 01:01:26 You know, these companies need to be more responsive to where their people are, and ironically the $80 price point for Grand Theft Auto is actually maybe they should have just started $100 straight up for it since

Colin Moriarty 01:01:35 Like you said, that is the one that's getting pre-ordered more.

Colin Moriarty 01:01:37 Although Strauselnik did say, and I I agree with him, he said on CNBC that like they don't anticipate or project that that is going to be the behavior of the player base once the game comes out.

Colin Moriarty 01:01:46 Um

Colin Moriarty 01:01:47 But the internet's a the internet's an interesting place because it's not it is like a an open microphone and yet it doesn't seem to reflect all sorts of things.

Colin Moriarty 01:01:59 that are real in the world.

Colin Moriarty 01:02:01 Um and gaming seems to be like really encapsulated in that prism of of not really seeing it for what it is, if that makes sense.

Max Roberts 01:02:08 Yeah, it's

Max Roberts 01:02:09 Th a lot of loud people, but it's not reflective of like the reality of what actual consumers are gonna go into.

Max Roberts 01:02:18 It

Max Roberts 01:02:20 In looking, kind of thinking about the PS6 going forward, I thought it might be interesting to maybe come up with a little list or or play out like what

Max Roberts 01:02:33 They need what Sony should do to kind of set up the accounts going forward.

Max Roberts 01:02:39 Um, because like one thing that I looked into that I hadn't I'd never really considered before, having a kid, um

Max Roberts 01:02:46 But f family plans and ownership.

Max Roberts 01:02:48 So like Nintendo when they launched the Switch 2, they're like, here's virtual game cards and you can you can lend your copy of Mario Kart to your kid for two weeks digitally.

Max Roberts 01:02:56 I was like, well that's like something I guess.

Max Roberts 01:02:59 But then I I looked into like what Sony you can do on PlayStation.

Max Roberts 01:03:02 You have to log in on the PlayStation.

Max Roberts 01:03:04 See

Max Roberts 01:03:06 Um say you you have uh nephews who you like bought PlayStation for.

Max Roberts 01:03:10 So like if you wanted to share your games with them or for whatever reason

Colin Moriarty 01:03:10 Oh yeah, definitely.

Max Roberts 01:03:14 You apparently, according to the research I did on Reddit, it's like you would have to log in on their their PlayStation and make that the home your home PS5 for them to play your games.

Max Roberts 01:03:24 But then the only way for you to play yours at home would be is if it always got an online internet connection.

Max Roberts 01:03:30 I actually just lent my dad my original PS5 so he could play James Bond.

Max Roberts 01:03:35 And um

Max Roberts 01:03:37 I thought I had set it up where he was logging in as the default.

Max Roberts 01:03:40 So he was playing James Bond.

Max Roberts 01:03:41 He just started it.

Max Roberts 01:03:42 And then I logged into mine to play Marathon and it kicked him out because I logged into my PlayStation.

Max Roberts 01:03:47 So like there's no real family account or family sharing or

Max Roberts 01:03:50 purchases and things like that.

Max Roberts 01:03:51 So I thought that I think that's something potentially important, but and obviously security.

Max Roberts 01:03:56 I was curious what you think.

Max Roberts 01:03:57 Like they're gearing up to have these two PlayStation 6 kind of hand the handheld on the console.

Max Roberts 01:04:02 a thousand dollars presumably for the PS six, who knows what the handheld will cost in in these times, like what do you think that they need to get done or do or announce or or fix?

Max Roberts 01:04:14 before they go all digital all the time, where it's a we live in a PSP Go kind of world.

Colin Moriarty 01:04:19 Yeah, I mean that is the world that we're going to live in, um, with them.

Max Roberts 01:04:22 Mm-hmm.

Colin Moriarty 01:04:24 And generally.

Colin Moriarty 01:04:25 Um

Colin Moriarty 01:04:27 They have to fix a lot.

Colin Moriarty 01:04:28 I mean, I think that they have s done themselves some brand damage with their core audience in the last few years.

Colin Moriarty 01:04:35 However

Colin Moriarty 01:04:36 I think that that's hard to quantify, and I don't know that it even really matters.

Colin Moriarty 01:04:40 And I I hate to say that.

Colin Moriarty 01:04:42 I said recently, and a lot of people don't like to hear it, because I'm one I'm talking about myself when I say this.

Colin Moriarty 01:04:48 But I don't think people are they can't think too deep no lot of people just don't think too deeply about a lot of these things is like we're not really the audience anymore.

Colin Moriarty 01:04:55 I don't know how you can look at the reality of gaming generally speaking.

Colin Moriarty 01:05:00 like any facet of it on any platform and then look at like the behavior of players like me and be like, yeah, they're making this shit for you now.

Colin Moriarty 01:05:07 It's like they're really not.

Colin Moriarty 01:05:09 I mean

Colin Moriarty 01:05:09 Half of Sony's revenue comes from 10 games as a service.

Colin Moriarty 01:05:12 I've never even played Fortnite once in my entire life.

Colin Moriarty 01:05:16 You know, like

Colin Moriarty 01:05:17 It's not like I buy random shit like Luna Abyss.

Colin Moriarty 01:05:22 Now, of course, they want my money, and I spend a lot of money on PlayStation Network.

Colin Moriarty 01:05:26 I am probably in the top 1% of people that spend money on PlayStation Network, I would assume

Colin Moriarty 01:05:30 And so they would if if everyone behaved as a core gamer like me, then yeah, maybe they would actually be aiming towards us, be like, all right, well I guess they're spending a couple grand a year and

Colin Moriarty 01:05:38 But that's not that's not only not people's financial experience, that's not their time experience.

Colin Moriarty 01:05:42 Like people simply can't play as many games as I do.

Colin Moriarty 01:05:45 So you can't even like look at things like how could you?

Colin Moriarty 01:05:47 You have a fucking life.

Colin Moriarty 01:05:48 You have a job, you have you know some people have kids and all the rest

Colin Moriarty 01:05:51 I keep up because I feel like it's important for me to do so.

Colin Moriarty 01:05:53 Who would want to hear from a movie critic that doesn't watch films?

Colin Moriarty 01:05:56 Right?

Colin Moriarty 01:05:57 So, um, so I I mean that's just the nature of the beast.

Colin Moriarty 01:06:00 And I think a lot of people in my life know that like I play 40, 50 hours a game sometimes a week.

Colin Moriarty 01:06:04 What I really like when I'm playing.

Colin Moriarty 01:06:06 But I think that the next generation will test the bounds of like who the audience is.

Colin Moriarty 01:06:16 And what I think will end up happening is that the PlayStation 5 is simply never going away.

Colin Moriarty 01:06:21 If you think the PlayStation 4 has been stubborn, and it is, there are games that were at right.

Max Roberts 01:06:25 We talked about this last time, yeah.

Max Roberts 01:06:28 Cross-gen games were like uh the after God of War it's gotta be it.

Colin Moriarty 01:06:31 Yeah, it's it's not I think if th I think if AI didn't exist in the way it did now does now, destroying component pricing.

Colin Moriarty 01:06:40 Then it might have been over by now.

Colin Moriarty 01:06:42 Like it and in fact like it we really might PS5 would be three hundred dollars or something and it would be like, yeah, this thing is

Colin Moriarty 01:06:49 You know, which is I was explaining this to people recently that don't really know gaming, where I was like, you have to understand that this is the first generation where the hardware has gotten more expensive.

Colin Moriarty 01:07:01 The irony is that the software is really accessible.

Colin Moriarty 01:07:05 Like crazy accessible, even if you're broke

Max Roberts 01:07:08 Yes

Colin Moriarty 01:07:08 Right, just go play like a free game or wait for these deep discounts.

Colin Moriarty 01:07:12 You can you do you can get especially on Steam, but PlayStation really has great sales.

Colin Moriarty 01:07:15 They don't get enough credit because they do have Steam-like sales all the time.

Colin Moriarty 01:07:18 Um, but people just don't really see them like that anymore

Colin Moriarty 01:07:21 You can get games for almost nothing.

Colin Moriarty 01:07:23 Like literally comical amounts of money where I'm like, why are you even selling it for this much?

Colin Moriarty 01:07:27 I remember feeling that way about the Mass Effect trilogy, like the remaster.

Colin Moriarty 01:07:31 I got it for five bucks once.

Colin Moriarty 01:07:32 And I'm like, why would you even sell it for five bucks?

Colin Moriarty 01:07:35 Like, what is that what does that even signal about the value of your game?

Colin Moriarty 01:07:37 That's how cheap it gets.

Colin Moriarty 01:07:39 But the hardware

Colin Moriarty 01:07:41 Is the imposition.

Colin Moriarty 01:07:44 And this will create a very

Colin Moriarty 01:07:50 Dangerous situation for all the hardware players moving forward, including Nintendo.

Colin Moriarty 01:07:55 And in a way, including Steam, although they're not reliant on high-end PCs.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:00 They're reliant on just PC access.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:02 So they're much safer.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:04 But there's like these doors into these other ecosystems that require X amount of money.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:09 And I think what's going to end up happening is that

Colin Moriarty 01:08:12 Sony will sell millions of PS6s right away.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:15 There are people that are not price sensitive.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:17 I'll buy both of them, personally.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:20 And really, whatever they cost, I want them.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:22 And I especially want the handheld.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:25 Um like bad.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:27 I want it bad.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:28 I I I think it's gonna be I'm so exc I'm so excited to see like what it looks like, right?

Max Roberts 01:08:31 Oh yeah.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:31 And I think the portal is such a good taste of what it could be that it's like damn dude.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:36 If if it's like this, because the portal is so excellent.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:41 I think that they'll sell to the core and then they'll they already realize this, I think, is that they just can't abandon PS5.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:47 There were games at Summer Games Fest.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:49 Or not Summer Games Fest uh uh uh Gamescom that were just shown by Jet that were coming to PS4 next year.

Max Roberts 01:08:51 Thanks, Tom.

Colin Moriarty 01:08:56 So if you think 14 years of PS4 is a lot, I want you to wait

Colin Moriarty 01:09:01 Until you see what happens with the PS5.

Colin Moriarty 01:09:03 Because if this component pricing stuff doesn't f get fixed until the 2030s, then like what are you gonna do?

Colin Moriarty 01:09:09 In fact, I could imagine Sony re redesigning the PS5 again.

Colin Moriarty 01:09:13 Trying to make it smaller and smaller, you know.

Max Roberts 01:09:15 A super slim, as it were, remember with the PS uh PS3.

Colin Moriarty 01:09:16 Um Right.

Colin Moriarty 01:09:19 There there have been like so there were two PS1s, two PS2s, but there were three PS3s

Max Roberts 01:09:23 Three PS3s.

Colin Moriarty 01:09:25 And um maybe they could oh the George Foreman Girl one Yeah the slim the regular slim is the 2009 Slim is beautiful nice machine

Max Roberts 01:09:26 I just had to go buy one.

Max Roberts 01:09:30 Uh I was d between that and a regular slim.

Max Roberts 01:09:33 Uh but the the

Max Roberts 01:09:36 It is the best looking of and that's the one I bought.

Max Roberts 01:09:39 The super slims were the George Foreman was the the doors were broken or sticky, and I was just like, eh.

Max Roberts 01:09:45 The slim's so beautiful, I'll just take the slim.

Colin Moriarty 01:09:50 It's um so so yeah, like you could like it's just the PSX is gonna be tough

Max Roberts 01:09:50 It's so good looking

Colin Moriarty 01:09:56 And I don't know how much it really it matters a lot because they want to proliferate this new machine.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:03 But Sony's never made a lot of money on hardware.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:05 In fact, they've lost a lot of money on hardware depending on the generation.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:07 They want you to play games.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:09 And I think they kind of have to reframe their mind on if they just stay where they are.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:17 Like, is it really the end of the world?

Colin Moriarty 01:10:19 And we can slow, like we did with PS5, we can slowly prod.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:23 We'll cut off the show at some point.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:25 Call of Duty will get cut off at some point.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:27 Genshin.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:28 Like all these things that have already happened.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:29 And then people like by, you know

Colin Moriarty 01:10:32 I always bring up MLB the show because it's one of those games, I mean it's on everything now, but it was one of those games where baseball players just were on PlayStation because of it.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:38 And eventually you pull that game and then it's like, well, I gotta buy the next machine.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:42 You can do that to people.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:44 But I think what's gonna end up happening is you're just gonna have this this truly unprecedented cross generational re reality.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:49 And I think the PS4 is gonna be involved too

Max Roberts 01:10:52 I I would believe it.

Colin Moriarty 01:10:52 Like I I I don't I yeah, like I don't think people are moving off of PS4 because it's becoming technically difficult to have games running on mobile

Colin Moriarty 01:11:01 tablet, PC and PS5 and Xbox series and PS4 and Xbox One.

Colin Moriarty 01:11:07 Like there's just at some point you have this technical debt and you need to relinquish it.

Colin Moriarty 01:11:11 Um but I also know that a lot of like I know people that work on Call of Duty, for instance, and I've been told, and I've I've reported this on my show, like when they announced this year that Call of Duty wouldn't come to PS4 for the first time, like the studios are mad.

Colin Moriarty 01:11:23 Like th there's a lot of conflict because they w they they get bonuses based on sales and they're like, we're cutting off an enormous number of people.

Colin Moriarty 01:11:31 But I think that the people internally at Activision and Microsoft realize well we we can't carry these consoles anymore.

Colin Moriarty 01:11:36 Like

Colin Moriarty 01:11:37 We can't do it.

Colin Moriarty 01:11:38 The games are being held back.

Colin Moriarty 01:11:39 It's almost like the generation where Wii and Wii U would get their own version of games.

Colin Moriarty 01:11:43 It's like it's gonna that's eventually what's gonna have to happen.

Colin Moriarty 01:11:46 And it's like, do you really wanna do that?

Colin Moriarty 01:11:48 This like last gen short shit.

Colin Moriarty 01:11:50 So they they moved on even though it's kind of cutting off their nose despite their face in a way.

Colin Moriarty 01:11:53 So I think it's going to be a very messy, very complicated situation.

Colin Moriarty 01:11:57 But I don't think the games are going to suffer.

Colin Moriarty 01:11:58 I just think the hardware is going to be

Colin Moriarty 01:12:00 It people are gonna stay where they are.

Colin Moriarty 01:12:01 And I think this actually benefits Sony because I don't think people can even afford to leave even if they wanted to.

Colin Moriarty 01:12:05 And that's that's too bad.

Colin Moriarty 01:12:08 Um, but that's a good for them

Max Roberts 01:12:09 It is.

Max Roberts 01:12:10 I last year I wrote an article called Where Did the Price Drops Grow?

Max Roberts 01:12:14 Because people were just

Max Roberts 01:12:15 kind of to you know, lamenting this.

Max Roberts 01:12:17 And you'll remember this, the Kevin Butler ad where the PS3 went to $2.

Max Roberts 01:12:21 99.

Max Roberts 01:12:21 Do you remember that he's surrounded by internet reporter?

Colin Moriarty 01:12:23 Mm-hmm.

Max Roberts 01:12:25 It's great.

Max Roberts 01:12:25 Kevin Butler ads, they really should bring those back.

Max Roberts 01:12:28 It's really

Colin Moriarty 01:12:28 Yeah, yeah, that's a s that's a weird story.

Max Roberts 01:12:29 Bill Braden.

Max Roberts 01:12:31 It is.

Max Roberts 01:12:32 He just he used a Wii in a commercial.

Max Roberts 01:12:33 Gosh, it's terrible.

Max Roberts 01:12:35 But anyway, I w I was looking at it and it kind of reminded me a lot of you may also remember this, the

Max Roberts 01:12:41 the kind of chart that Steve Jobs revealed when he had just come back to Apple in nineteen ninety eight and it was for the computers.

Max Roberts 01:12:49 The Mac was

Max Roberts 01:12:50 so many different computers and it was there was two columns consumer pro desktop portable and he was like this is what the Macs you know we're gonna have four computers they fill these slots

Max Roberts 01:12:59 And when you look at the gaming industry as a whole, currently at this time, it was basically if you look at the price range of hardware.

Max Roberts 01:13:08 You can go all the way down to $200, or I guess it's $250 now for the switchlight, and then now all the way up to $900 for PS5 Pro or whatever.

Max Roberts 01:13:17 But that the price range is so wide, but you can play

Max Roberts 01:13:21 just about whatever you want on just about anything.

Max Roberts 01:13:25 You know, with the cross cross-platform games like Fortnite or Minecraft, if if you're into those sort of things.

Max Roberts 01:13:32 Or if you want a PlayStation, you know, there's a cheaper budget option in the digital budget in the sense of it's just the cheapest, but then they move up the tiers and the PS6 is positioning itself for that way.

Max Roberts 01:13:43 with a handheld option that will be cheaper and then the pro or premium console that will be sitting in your living room and presumably possibly eventually a PS6 Pro if they continue this.

Max Roberts 01:13:56 this type of plan.

Max Roberts 01:13:57 And you invest up front and then you ride that out as long as you can.

Max Roberts 01:14:01 You know, and if if my PS5 game is also playable on the PS6, all I'm missing out on

Max Roberts 01:14:08 Is performance, graphics, fidelity, uh, control resonant will look different or run different.

Max Roberts 01:14:14 But I can still play it on my PS5 or my PS5 Pro.

Max Roberts 01:14:18 And I think that's where it all went, is just like you pick your entry point and then you play and go from there.

Max Roberts 01:14:25 It's kind of, I think, the idea.

Colin Moriarty 01:14:26 Yeah, I think I think you're right.

Colin Moriarty 01:14:28 I think the thing is because of the lack of interoperability between the ecosystems, it makes it like you're kind of choosing your poison and then you can't really

Colin Moriarty 01:14:36 You could do it something about like I personally don't people are always like I I had many generations where I played on multiple consoles, but it feels like less necessary than ever.

Colin Moriarty 01:14:45 I've I've felt that way even really since the PS3 era, but certainly now where I'm like there's nothing

Colin Moriarty 01:14:50 like exclusive on this machine really that's like other outside of a few games a year.

Colin Moriarty 01:14:54 But if you're if you're really playing games, I'm playing what, 30, 40 games a year.

Colin Moriarty 01:14:58 It's like

Colin Moriarty 01:14:59 These aren't exclusive games.

Colin Moriarty 01:15:00 They can play these anywhere.

Colin Moriarty 01:15:01 And um So there's definitely a method to the madness about what you're saying.

Colin Moriarty 01:15:06 I just feel like people feel like they're locked in because of these onerous prices, but they can't.

Colin Moriarty 01:15:09 It's hard to blame gaming for it.

Colin Moriarty 01:15:11 Like gaming didn't make these prices.

Colin Moriarty 01:15:12 They're re they're reacting to the to the it's it's not really fair actually.

Colin Moriarty 01:15:15 Like gaming is it's not fair what's happened to gaming, but it's also not fair to blame them either.

Colin Moriarty 01:15:20 These are we're a little we're little fries.

Colin Moriarty 01:15:22 If by the way, if we were a more dominant ecosystem, they would sell to us instead.

Max Roberts 01:15:26 Mm-hmm.

Colin Moriarty 01:15:27 Right?

Colin Moriarty 01:15:27 Like they're selling to these AI firms because there's more money to be made.

Colin Moriarty 01:15:30 You can't really blame them for it.

Colin Moriarty 01:15:31 It sucks.

Max Roberts 01:15:31 No, they can't.

Max Roberts 01:15:32 And then you and the ph phone companies and computers, like peop more people are buying phones than they're buying a PlayStation.

Max Roberts 01:15:38 You buy a PlayStation

Max Roberts 01:15:40 An average consumer will buy a PlayStation once for, you know, ten years.

Max Roberts 01:15:45 You might buy three to five phones in that time.

Max Roberts 01:15:48 So obviously those and and the phones can cost just as much, if not more, than the the console.

Max Roberts 01:15:54 So it's it's wild to think about all of you know the kind of the way it all plays out.

Max Roberts 01:15:59 They want you to keep spending money and the the number uh I have it in my notes here.

Max Roberts 01:16:05 They're looking they're

Max Roberts 01:16:07 LTD lifetime to date is like how much money you're spending over the life of the console.

Max Roberts 01:16:12 And their average number, at least in 25, was eight hundred and forty-six dollars.

Max Roberts 01:16:16 This is how much people are spending on average.

Max Roberts 01:16:18 And that's those top games that you're talking about.

Max Roberts 01:16:22 They are, I have it here somewhere.

Max Roberts 01:16:26 Because I just wrote about Herman Holst and all the the things happening with Forbidden West.

Max Roberts 01:16:30 But those top ten games, it's EA uh

Max Roberts 01:16:33 The FIFA Club type stuff, Roblox, Call of Duty, NBA 2K, EA Play, Fortnite, Genshin, College Football, Grand Theft Auto 5 still.

Max Roberts 01:16:43 And Ubisoft Plus Classics, that's where they're getting that's at least in the chart from their games and online service segment.

Max Roberts 01:16:51 That's what's bringing in the money.

Max Roberts 01:16:52 None of those.

Colin Moriarty 01:16:53 Mm-hmm.

Max Roberts 01:16:54 Are owned by Sony.

Max Roberts 01:16:56 That's why they obviously want a live service title, something that draw that will be that kind of money.

Max Roberts 01:17:04 And they're just making 30% off of those.

Colin Moriarty 01:17:07 Right, exactly.

Colin Moriarty 01:17:08 Like that that I mean I've tried to explain this for years to people because I they're like, oh like

Colin Moriarty 01:17:13 You can get all of it.

Colin Moriarty 01:17:15 If you do it right.

Colin Moriarty 01:17:16 They just announced that Helldivers sold 22 million copies.

Colin Moriarty 01:17:20 You know?

Colin Moriarty 01:17:20 Like, what what do you

Colin Moriarty 01:17:24 What do you that's w more than Spider Man 2 sold?

Colin Moriarty 01:17:28 And it it goes on.

Colin Moriarty 01:17:30 People buy war bonds and people and it's just it's it's kind of speaks for itself.

Colin Moriarty 01:17:34 There is a

Colin Moriarty 01:17:34 Someone wrote in on our stream yesterday actually about this like there's a an almost childlike understanding of a ca of economics in in in a lot of gaming spaces.

Colin Moriarty 01:17:42 And um

Colin Moriarty 01:17:45 You can't force people to understand shit.

Colin Moriarty 01:17:48 Like you you know what I mean?

Colin Moriarty 01:17:49 At some point, like if you don't get

Colin Moriarty 01:17:53 Anything about this stuff, then there's just nothing that can be said about it.

Colin Moriarty 01:17:56 But the the this is the way people play.

Colin Moriarty 01:17:57 So it makes Sony a lot of money, but it leaves them incredibly vulnerable.

Colin Moriarty 01:18:00 It's a double-edged sword.

Colin Moriarty 01:18:02 Um

Colin Moriarty 01:18:04 I don't know.

Colin Moriarty 01:18:04 I don't know what's I it's gonna be very, very interesting.

Colin Moriarty 01:18:06 I think what saves Sony, as I've said many times recently, is uh I just think their lack of competition.

Colin Moriarty 01:18:12 They have no real competitor.

Colin Moriarty 01:18:14 Right?

Colin Moriarty 01:18:15 Like now they're trying to reframe Nintendo.

Colin Moriarty 01:18:16 And I think Nintendo in a way maybe even trying to reframe them and trying to get back, you know, in the in the ring with each other where they've kind of

Colin Moriarty 01:18:22 worked around each other for a long time.

Colin Moriarty 01:18:24 Wherein Xbox I don't think is even a really st is really a competitor on the field with them anymore.

Colin Moriarty 01:18:28 And so I think that that they've they're lucky.

Colin Moriarty 01:18:30 Because by the way, a normal company, like a company that's like actually well run, like would have

Colin Moriarty 01:18:35 shoved their boot in Sony's ass over the last few years.

Colin Moriarty 01:18:37 And I'm not saying it would have affected the sales or whatever, but it would have been a lot different than it is now.

Colin Moriarty 01:18:42 Where they've just been like, yeah, we don't say anything, we don't really do anything, and just kinda hanging out.

Max Roberts 01:18:47 And you gotta wonder how much of the vocal audience of people upset about this sort of thing, like realizing

Max Roberts 01:18:54 that the core, the people that were there maybe in the PS3, buying, you know, keeping the the console alive until it could come back.

Max Roberts 01:19:02 And how many of those people

Max Roberts 01:19:07 Are there.

Max Roberts 01:19:07 And then how many have come up since the PS4 or even in the PS5 where we used to be getting an Augustie Dog game every two to three years?

Max Roberts 01:19:15 Now it's taking seven to eight?

Max Roberts 01:19:18 And people think that's normal.

Max Roberts 01:19:19 Like we're getting fewer of those exclusives, right, that really defined Sony in those that generation.

Colin Moriarty 01:19:23 Yeah, it's

Max Roberts 01:19:25 And then it's just gotten slower and slower because games take longer, there's more and more money, and the live service it

Colin Moriarty 01:19:30 And just a lot of bad decision making just a lot of bad decision making.

Max Roberts 01:19:32 A lot of bad decision making.

Colin Moriarty 01:19:33 Yeah.

Colin Moriarty 01:19:34 I mean that's what it is.

Max Roberts 01:19:34 Um

Colin Moriarty 01:19:35 It's not even the games taking too long.

Colin Moriarty 01:19:37 Like these are the this is what it takes now.

Colin Moriarty 01:19:38 You know, like I think people have to kind of wrap their minds around it.

Colin Moriarty 01:19:41 I think we've

Colin Moriarty 01:19:42 wrapped our mind around that readily.

Colin Moriarty 01:19:44 Um I just to me I feel like

Colin Moriarty 01:19:51 I don't know man.

Colin Moriarty 01:19:52 I d I don't I'm vr I'm incredibly disappointed in Sony's performance uh from a first and second party, but specifically first party, second party's better.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:01 I mean

Colin Moriarty 01:20:02 They ha they haven't been able to maintain the second-party relationships that they've had.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:06 Like Arrowhead clearly wants to go do something else.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:09 Um Stellar Blades multi-platform now.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:11 You know, it's on so like they're not doing a great job there either.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:13 But you can't force these companies to take your money.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:15 But with the first parties, like that those that you have captive, they were given way too much freedom.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:21 And I've said it before, it's tough because you want your creatives to be like, oh, uh, we want to make this and that, and but I'd be like, it's too fucking bad.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:28 Like if you're if you're at Blue Point and you're like, yeah, we should make maybe we should make a God of War game.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:33 It's like, I don't think so.

Max Roberts 01:20:34 You should be uh you should be remastering themes.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:35 You know, uh you should make a God of War game.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:37 You should remake God of War.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:38 Great.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:39 Why don't you guys do that?

Colin Moriarty 01:20:40 You know, uh Bend

Colin Moriarty 01:20:42 Uh or whoever.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:43 Media molecule wasting all that time on dreams.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:45 Not really Hermann Holst's fault.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:47 Um it's just bad management of internal resources.

Colin Moriarty 01:20:50 I would have rather have them seen that them take these billions of dollars that they've

Colin Moriarty 01:20:53 flushed on the toilet and and spent it on cumulatively and spent it on external games that wouldn't have subsumed their entire internal storytelling apparatus to the point where it's totally reasonable to people for people to say that there are

Colin Moriarty 01:21:07 are no exclusives, I just kind of question I don't really give a shit.

Colin Moriarty 01:21:12 Like I want these games, but I also am like, I don't know, man.

Colin Moriarty 01:21:15 I'm inundated with things to play.

Max Roberts 01:21:17 Oh, yeah.

Colin Moriarty 01:21:19 I would love this, but it's not like I'm yearning for it.

Colin Moriarty 01:21:21 I'm not year yearning.

Colin Moriarty 01:21:22 I can't wait to play Intergalactic.

Colin Moriarty 01:21:24 Am I like yearning for it?

Colin Moriarty 01:21:25 Like what am I gonna do?

Max Roberts 01:21:27 What can I play until Neil's game comes out?

Colin Moriarty 01:21:27 There's nothing to play.

Colin Moriarty 01:21:29 You know, and I'm like, I don't know, man.

Colin Moriarty 01:21:31 You could I can never play another PlayStation like first party game ever again.

Colin Moriarty 01:21:34 That would be sad.

Colin Moriarty 01:21:35 And it wouldn't really affect much.

Colin Moriarty 01:21:36 What two games a year or something?

Colin Moriarty 01:21:38 So I just think people need to kind of frame things a little bit differently.

Max Roberts 01:21:38 That's where we're at.

Colin Moriarty 01:21:42 But that's Sony's fault.

Colin Moriarty 01:21:43 They're the ones who did it to themselves, and you can't really blame them for um you can't really blame the audience rather for being upset about that.

Colin Moriarty 01:21:53 I just think that that people are kind of blowing it out of proportion in a way because

Colin Moriarty 01:21:56 We are so we I I really feel like we're actually in like a golden era of video games.

Max Roberts 01:22:00 I would agree with that.

Colin Moriarty 01:22:00 And uh and like there's just so

Colin Moriarty 01:22:04 Such a massive amount of things to play.

Colin Moriarty 01:22:06 It's it's it's mind boggling.

Colin Moriarty 01:22:07 September is a mind bog I I do this professionally and I don't understand

Colin Moriarty 01:22:13 what normal people are going to do in September.

Colin Moriarty 01:22:16 Like, I can't even play all this shit.

Max Roberts 01:22:18 Yeah.

Max Roberts 01:22:19 I mean for me it's just it's down to the budget.

Max Roberts 01:22:21 It's just like cause they are games are expensive, but I have to I have to pick and choose.

Max Roberts 01:22:25 But you know the beautiful thing is

Max Roberts 01:22:27 Is like if I don't grab Wolverine day one, Wolverine will be on sale eventually.

Max Roberts 01:22:32 Right?

Max Roberts 01:22:33 Like I don't I don't have to it my job doesn't depend on me playing this game promptly

Max Roberts 01:22:39 Uh, and I've I can tell you, I have a fat stack of games to play.

Max Roberts 01:22:43 Like uh I'm not in a rush.

Max Roberts 01:22:45 And I can't I at least have I think the common sense to know I don't need to be there day one for something, you know?

Max Roberts 01:22:52 I like

Max Roberts 01:22:53 It's not gonna go away.

Colin Moriarty 01:22:53 Yeah, I don't I don't I don't

Colin Moriarty 01:22:56 The zeitgeist thing is not that important to me.

Max Roberts 01:22:59 Yeah.

Colin Moriarty 01:22:59 You know what I mean?

Max Roberts 01:23:00 Mm-hmm.

Colin Moriarty 01:23:01 Um To me I feel like

Colin Moriarty 01:23:06 I just want to enjoy games as they come, enjoy them in the most holistic way I can.

Colin Moriarty 01:23:10 It's cool to be part of the conversation.

Colin Moriarty 01:23:11 You kind of have to pick and choose, at least from my perspective.

Colin Moriarty 01:23:13 Like uh

Colin Moriarty 01:23:14 A great example is a Blood Blood of the Dawnwalker and Onimusha come out basically the same day.

Colin Moriarty 01:23:18 It's like, well, you know, choose your choose your path.

Colin Moriarty 01:23:20 Like you can't you can't do both.

Colin Moriarty 01:23:23 So you just simply can't be part of the conversation by virtue of that for both games.

Max Roberts 01:23:27 Yeah.

Colin Moriarty 01:23:27 But I think choice, I mean too much choice, there's such a thing as that.

Colin Moriarty 01:23:30 But I think um Yeah, I don't know.

Colin Moriarty 01:23:35 I don't know.

Max Roberts 01:23:36 Yeah, it's crazy.

Max Roberts 01:23:37 It's uh it's an interesting time.

Max Roberts 01:23:39 We uh

Max Roberts 01:23:43 There's a lot of decisions being made, both externally just by the supply of components, studios.

Max Roberts 01:23:52 reshuffling of assets.

Max Roberts 01:23:54 Who knows what's you know.

Max Roberts 01:23:56 We I one article I wrote was called Wasting a Generation, like the in a Sony's life service graveyard, like this pursuit of life service over the generation and just kind of squandering the titles.

Max Roberts 01:24:05 Um, I made this chart for a separate one, but there is a slide in their deck where they're like, these are the studios that do single player, here's our live server.

Colin Moriarty 01:24:10 Mm-hmm.

Max Roberts 01:24:13 But when you really go back and look at it, like actually all of these single player teams were

Max Roberts 01:24:18 uh s spending most of their time trying to make a live service thing.

Max Roberts 01:24:22 And they miss they just missed the mark of like, no, uh we should be focusing our teams on

Max Roberts 01:24:30 what they're good at and either making second party relationships to make the live service thing or let our live service people make the live service stuff.

Max Roberts 01:24:37 Um

Max Roberts 01:24:38 You know, it's just we'll see how it all shakes out going forward, but it's a very interesting rough waters, but yeah.

Colin Moriarty 01:24:44 Yeah.

Colin Moriarty 01:24:47 It's too bad.

Colin Moriarty 01:24:49 Um but I think that people have to make their, you know people have to just make their own decisions about like why you're involved in these games.

Colin Moriarty 01:24:56 Like I can't say that I started playing on PlayStation in the PS1 era because of PlayStation games.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:00 It's not true.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:01 Um and even PlayStation 2 games were not really first party games for me.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:06 Um it wasn't really until the PS3 era that PlayStation's games became a true relevance.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:11 uh both on the market and um like broadly speaking and for me as an individual.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:17 If you want to play Gran Turismo

Colin Moriarty 01:25:19 Or some of the rand, you know, Sly Cooper and Ratchet and Clank.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:21 These games didn't really sell very many copies.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:23 Like these weren't the games that sold copies were like Grand Theft Auto and Grand The Grand Tourism did sell a lot of copies.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:28 one of the best selling franchises PlayStation's ever done, but those things didn't really drive pardon the pun necessarily the way things would come to go.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:35 Like the first party kind of saved PS3.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:37 And I think we all respect and understand that, but it was not always this way.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:41 So when people try to frame the conversation as like Sony losing its soul, I would say like I don't know about that.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:45 I think I think it's about

Colin Moriarty 01:25:48 All of the relationships that they have with the publishers and developers and all the different experiences we had on this kind of central machine.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:53 And if you want to play on an agnostic machine, then go play on PC.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:57 Nothing's stopping you.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:58 I don't care what you do.

Colin Moriarty 01:25:58 I mean like I don't own Sony.

Colin Moriarty 01:26:01 If you want if you want to go like play somewhere else, then you should do you should go where like you feel like you are being

Colin Moriarty 01:26:08 well respected as a consumer to your specifications.

Max Roberts 01:26:12 Yep.

Max Roberts 01:26:13 Exactly.

Max Roberts 01:26:15 Well, Colin, I think that does it.

Max Roberts 01:26:18 I think we've we've covered all the bases.

Max Roberts 01:26:20 We're moving into the digital future.

Max Roberts 01:26:22 Everyone set sail.

Max Roberts 01:26:24 Start buying all your games digitally.

Colin Moriarty 01:26:25 I'm sorry to say it.

Colin Moriarty 01:26:26 I mean I'm sorry like I don't really understand um

Colin Moriarty 01:26:34 I don't know.

Colin Moriarty 01:26:35 I don't really I like I think that like we have to embrace digital is good.

Colin Moriarty 01:26:40 Digital is the ideal

Colin Moriarty 01:26:43 With parameters in place.

Colin Moriarty 01:26:45 So we need to work towards having those parameters in place.

Colin Moriarty 01:26:48 Who wants a shelf full of fucking discs if

Colin Moriarty 01:26:52 If you can have rights to your digital ecosystem that cross companies and generations, and you can pass them down to your kids and all like why then would you even want them?

Colin Moriarty 01:27:04 Why would you want the disk?

Colin Moriarty 01:27:05 You know, it's just a matter of your of your ownership over it.

Max Roberts 01:27:09 When I wa the 3DS and the Vita, I was in college at the time and I was all digital on those platforms because I'd put them in my bag and I'd be at I'd be on campus.

Max Roberts 01:27:17 Like, oh, I want to play this now.

Max Roberts 01:27:19 And it's just loaded there.

Max Roberts 01:27:21 Like

Max Roberts 01:27:22 I get that mentality.

Max Roberts 01:27:23 Digital is super convenient and great.

Max Roberts 01:27:26 Preloading?

Max Roberts 01:27:27 Are you kidding me?

Max Roberts 01:27:28 It's great.

Max Roberts 01:27:28 I don't have to go to the store and wait an hour for my

Max Roberts 01:27:31 hundred gigabyte last of us game to install it can just be ready the day it comes out.

Max Roberts 01:27:36 Like there's so many things that are convenient.

Max Roberts 01:27:39 And it for me, it's just

Max Roberts 01:27:42 uh personally, it's not about preservation or that that's up to other companies and groups is like to make sure things are like historically preserved.

Max Roberts 01:27:50 I just care about being able to play them again someday and then passing them on to my kid.

Max Roberts 01:27:56 It should should they show choose and then if you know if they want to sell it they can sell it and if she wants to play it, she can play it.

Max Roberts 01:28:01 Um that's that's it what it is for me.

Max Roberts 01:28:04 You know, that's what it's tied up in.

Max Roberts 01:28:06 And so if I can turn my PSN account into her PSN account, here you go.

Colin Moriarty 01:28:10 Well that's what I'm fighting for.

Colin Moriarty 01:28:12 So, like like, you know, that's part of what I've presented is the idea of generational, intergenerational ownership and perpetual ownership.

Colin Moriarty 01:28:22 I have deep way deeper ideas about how this all c all can work, but it's just

Colin Moriarty 01:28:26 Like the idea of escrow funds, like so like the idea of like small taxes being put into like these funds that are between all the companies and licensors where if like one goes down

Colin Moriarty 01:28:36 then others step in with the S some of the escrow funds to like feed those licenses into the consumer's hands or whatever.

Colin Moriarty 01:28:42 Like there are all these things you can do.

Colin Moriarty 01:28:43 You just it's why I brought up the salary cap in baseball earlier.

Colin Moriarty 01:28:46 Like

Colin Moriarty 01:28:46 If you're a baseball fan, you know that people have been complaining for decades about this and no one wants to do anything about it because they're scared about how hard it is

Colin Moriarty 01:28:54 Right?

Colin Moriarty 01:28:54 And now push comes to shove.

Colin Moriarty 01:28:56 There probably won't even be a baseball season next year because they're gonna lock them out and they're gonna have to solve the problem because they kicked the can down the road so long that now it's gonna interrupt service.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:03 And what I'm saying is

Colin Moriarty 01:29:05 You don't have we don't have to do that.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:06 We know.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:07 We can see the horizon.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:08 It's clear.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:09 The skies are clear.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:10 So we can prepare for such a thing that you're describing.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:14 And I think that all things being equal.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:17 The digital ecosystem with those protections in place is the ideal.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:22 Um and uh it's almost indisputable.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:26 But I understand people's reluctance based on the parameters that we're currently working under, which we need to change.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:32 And hopefully we will do that

Max Roberts 01:29:34 Hopefully.

Max Roberts 01:29:35 I wish you uh the best of luck in your fight as you represent a lot of people.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:41 Representing the key.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:42 Yeah, I don't know.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:42 I mean I I'm trying.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:43 Like w w no one is doing anything useful.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:46 Like it seems like no one is like it's like man someone's got I could bitch and wind I can make videos about it I could probably make a lot of money bitching about this but it's like

Colin Moriarty 01:29:56 Someone's gotta do something.

Colin Moriarty 01:29:57 You know, please someone do something.

Max Roberts 01:29:59 Please.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:00 Um, so we'll see

Max Roberts 01:30:02 Yeah

Max Roberts 01:30:03 We we shall see indeed, especially as we move into that PS six and all of the thing, we'll see how it all shakes out.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:09 Yeah, we'll see when we even learn about the PS6 and what their plans are, but they have to launch it by the spring, I would assume, of twenty eight.

Max Roberts 01:30:10 Um

Colin Moriarty 01:30:15 So it's gonna be we'll know this time next year, which is exciting.

Max Roberts 01:30:16 One We will, we will.

Max Roberts 01:30:20 You'll be you'll be pool side with your PlayStation 6 handheld.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:24 Oh, I can't wait, dude.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:26 I can't wait.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:26 I don't know if I'm ballsy enough to go.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:28 I don't even go into the b

Colin Moriarty 01:30:29 in the pool with my phone.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:30 I don't know if I'll be ballsy enough to do that.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:31 But really when you're thinking about it's like why not?

Max Roberts 01:30:32 The phone's water.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:33 Like what am I just gonna randomly drop it?

Colin Moriarty 01:30:35 Like I don't know.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:35 It'll be it'll probably be fine.

Max Roberts 01:30:37 Probably.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:37 But but you don't want to be especially if it's gonna cost like f four grand.

Max Roberts 01:30:38 I don't know.

Max Roberts 01:30:39 Pool side.

Max Roberts 01:30:40 Pool Call it poolside.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:40 Yeah, yeah, pool side is fine.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:41 We'll do that.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:42 We'll call it that.

Max Roberts 01:30:44 Playing your your Final Fantasies or what have you.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:47 Oh hell yeah.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:48 Final Fantasy 17 one day.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:50 Can't wait.

Max Roberts 01:30:51 Someday.

Max Roberts 01:30:52 Someday.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:53 Someday

Max Roberts 01:30:55 Or that Dragon Quest game that just got rebooted?

Max Roberts 01:30:57 Was it twelve oh what yeah.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:57 Oh 12.

Colin Moriarty 01:30:59 Yeah.

Colin Moriarty 01:31:00 Yeah man.

Colin Moriarty 01:31:00 Poor poor Dragon Quest.

Colin Moriarty 01:31:02 I love Dragon Quest.

Colin Moriarty 01:31:03 But Kingdom Hearts fans are getting their thing next year, so that's exciting for them.

Colin Moriarty 01:31:06 So something's happening.

Colin Moriarty 01:31:08 Things are happening.

Max Roberts 01:31:09 We're we we do exist.

Max Roberts 01:31:10 We're very excited.

Max Roberts 01:31:12 Or some are.

Max Roberts 01:31:13 Three three scorned me.

Max Roberts 01:31:14 I'm a lapsed Kingdom Hearts fan.

Colin Moriarty 01:31:16 Oh in interesting.

Max Roberts 01:31:18 Yeah.

Max Roberts 01:31:18 But that's a that's another discussion for maybe with Dustin someday

Colin Moriarty 01:31:22 Yeah, Dustin would be more appropriate for you.

Max Roberts 01:31:25 Yes he would.
