I decided to finally watch this legendary speech from the late Satoru Iwata. He opens with one of his most famous lines.
> "On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer, but in my heart, I am a gamer."
I'm not sure why I never watched this until now. I'm not entirely sure why I did watch it today. What I do know is that I am glad I finally did watch. We all wear many hats, especially creators. It is vital to never lose touch with what is in your heart though.
> The third thing that has not changed is the importance of the idea. Of course, it is valuable to device an extension or offshoot of a current idea, but it is invaluable to come up with a brand new idea of what a game can be. I'm sure there are few of you out there in the audience today with such creativity and our industry needs you.
Besides sage Iwata wisdom, this talk is a super interesting time capsule. The Wii was still known as "Revolution." *Nintendogs* was Miyamoto's current obsession. Free online play was not the standard in console gaming.
Hindsight lets us see exactly what the philosophy was for the Wii and Nintendo: to reach new gamers and create new experiences. This really has been their mantra from the beginning and is to this day. Being a developer conference though, Iwata speaks to the creators of games. There are promises of easy development APIs and partnership. Ease for both players and developers. This was similar messaging Sony took into the PS4 generation.
Iwata never lost sight of the audience and the creators because he was both.
