Summary

The definitive collectathon 3D platformer that proved too much of a good thing is possible. Donkey Kong must free his fellow kong buddies to fight King K. Rool's takeover of DK Island. The DK Rap.

Acquisition

My dad bought DK64 along with Star Fox 64, Pokémon Stadium Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, some maybe some other games that I don't remember (those distinctive, never-before-seen cartridge colors win the memory pool), probably a controller or two, and a Transfer Pak. I think he even got the Player's Guide with it all too.

Memories

It's a game that teleported me to a place I had never gone before in the game. It was the biggest thing I had ever seen in the digital world. I was mesmerized.

I was also very, very lost. I never beat the game, frequently get caught in areas with the wrong Kong to collect whatever color of banana needed to unlock whatever door. It was a game that would frustrate me as an adult, but one that kept me asking questions as a kid. I share about this in my video essay My Journey to Becoming a Map Maker.

The Transfer Pak is a key piece of the acquisition story. I had no idea what it's true purpose was. I thought it'd let me play a Game Boy Game on my TV if the N64 cart matched. I tried playing Donkey Kong Country for the GBC on my TV with DK64 inserted.

I spent far too many hours just playing Jetpac and Donkey Kong inside the creepy toy factory.
