Summary

A reinvention of the Donkey Kong IP, designed by the iconic team at Rare at the start of their golden age with Nintendo. An incredibly tight platformer with absurd 2D graphics on the Super Nintendo that pushed what a 16-bit game good look and play like. Collectathon elements are present throughout – a Rare staple – like collecting the KONG letters, bananas, and coins.

Acquisition

Another early on in the Goodwill bidding days. If memory serves this was round the time I got my SNES repaired by Gamer's Inc. I was excited to have this game back in my life.

Memories

I didn't grow up with this particular version of DKC. Instead, I spent countless hours with the Game Boy Color port of the game, which is notorious for squishing the graphics. What you don't know, right?

I lost myself in the jungle ruins and world of DK Island. I remember the mood of the levels soaked in a down pour of rain. The world was very real to my kid brain.

I'd get my own SNES copy when I got my Super Nintendo from a friend, likely right before it broke or right after it was repaired. I don't remember. This was a staple title that was a priority for me.

Despite all this love, I don't think I've ever beaten it. I may have beaten the GBC version, but I doubt it. I would dabble with the game again in 2020, alongside Super Metroid. You can read what I had to say below;

Donkey Kong Country

DKC never looked so good.

On a slightly more serious note, I never actually played the original SNES version of Donkey Kong Country. I only had the Game Boy Color version as a kid. DKC was one of my earlier pickups when I was given a Super Nintendo. I finally decided to play it when I bought a new wireless SNES controller from 8bitdo. No better way to test input lag than with a wireless controller. There is a clear reason why DKC, both the original game and the series as a whole, has stood the test of time as a pillar of platformers.
